  1. I think that Jonas and Gabe don't survive because when they are rideing the sled which was one of the memeories they see christmas lights which was also a memorie so I think they crash on the bike then Jonas hallutionates and then they die

    1. Savannah the only reason why I would think they were to survive is by sledding down to the exact place where there is love and music instead of a place where there is no love and no music but the only way to give the memories to all the people in the small town is by leaving the town and getting further away from it so the powers become weaker.

  2. I think they don't survive because at the end, it doesn't say that they continue. I just says, "He heard people singing. Behind him, vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." And in my personal opinion, that sounds like he and Gabriel died. It also says, "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe." And if that doesn't prove that they died, i don't know what else will.

    1. hey asher ( andrew) i think they do survive because it doesn't sound like jonas and gabriel died and it sounded almost like a dream possibly

    3. Dear Mr Jamal Small Wall,

I disagree. But only because you called it a dream. When it says, "Perhaps it was only an echo...", that could've meant that he died, and is just remembering that memory.

  3. I think they didn't survive. I think this because the light sounds like every movie ever if the main character dies, just a very bright flash of light.
I think the music could have been church music or christmas music.

    1. I think this was mostly a hallucination. And you can't just base it off of a movie, it doesn't make sense.

    2. I disagree with that. The music was definitely good music. He was just going elsewhere, which means he now has a life elsewhere. The light just meant that he was going Elsewhere, like teleporting.

    3. while your opinion is valid you claiming that the flash of light is "every movie ever" the giver came out in 1993 and the "every movie ever" is a bit of an overstatement because unless when you are referring to every movie ever the movies came out before 1993 then you cant assume this is what the author would do. in most cases movies copy tropes from books and even then the "flashing light trobe is barely used."

    4. I disagree because there isn't any details from the book to support your answer and this could take any kind of turn in any way, they could have survived or they could have died

    5. Tyrone, I didn't base it off a movie.

  4. I think they don't survive because i feel like Jonas is hallucinating that he is near elsewhere. He also has been slowly consciousness and I feel like he is thinking about the memory to survive and keep him awake. Also when he thinks he hears music and singing I think that he isn't actually at the memory of the house but just thinking bout the memory of the christmas and the cabin to give him hope that he is near elsewhere even though I don't think he is anywhere close since I don't think there actually is an place specifically called Elsewhere just random towns and other communites.

    1. I disagree but I also agree at the same time. I disagree because the light could mean life or death and even though he had to force his eyes open to see the light, they could be going into a different community or a loop back to there community. I agree at the same time because he has not had any food or water for a while and all of the memories that are going away are draining him.

    2. Yes I also agree that the light could be like the line of life or death. And yes he could be opening his eyes to see the light but that doesn't always mean that it could be that they are alive. It could also be the last or one of the last memories that are leaving which he is imagining while dying. Since the memories are going back to the community and it is draining him and how he was in terrible conditions, I believe that he dies and could be trying to cling onto that last memory but he dies.

  5. Well I don't think they're gonna because the music can't just play randomly and echos can't happen without a sound so there has to be someone behind the echo maybe trying to lure Jonas or Gabrielle. Or maybe they crash on the sled.

    1. The echos they heard were the memories of the Giver releasing himself.

    2. And the Christmas lights are also memories from the Giver.

    4. And i disagree because how does jonas have memories of the giver if his memories are leaving him????????????????????/

  6. I believe Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. This is because earlier in the book The Giver was passing memories to Jonas about sledding down a hill and the memory about spreading love while a family was opening presents. Both of these occur again while Jonas is at the top of the hill about to sled down to all of the people singing and waiting for him. I think that when he thought he was actually sledding and when he thought people were waiting for him, it was actually just a memory running through his head. At the end it said ¨ But perhaps it was only an echo ¨. I think that is when the memory in his head ended and he died after he heard the echo.

    1. There was no echo at the end, perhaps is was just a hallucination the book stated. Perhaps he got help by someone passing by, or found by a plane and got saved? Your story do be cap.

    2. I do think that they did sled down the hill into the community, but maybe the echoes and Christmas lights are memories from the Giver releasing himself and going with his daughter, Rosemary.

    3. I disagree with you Alivia. I disagree beacause this book is based in the future, meaning that all the stuff that the giver passed down to Jonas was stuff that was gonna happen in the future. For example the sledding. Jonas knew that the sledding happend or knew it was gonna happen. By the meaning of ''echo'' I think that Lois Lowry if trying to give the message of what "deja vu" is. Deja Vu is the feeling like that the thing your experiancing has already happend before. So all those memorys that Jonas was given was really just an act of the giver showing him the future. I also think that when they walked into the light it was then walking into the present instead of the future.

    4. while you have mild evidence there is no pin point in the book in which we know they die gabriel does not have the memories jonas has so he cant be dead and even if jonas were to give gabe the memorys jonas himself would forget that memory so even if one does not survive there is a guarteed chance one of them survive. we also know that there are 3 more books in this series so unless none of them are realted theres a good chance there in the next book

    5. The book is not based on the future. Otherwise it would not be a memory. A memory is something you remember from your PAST life or someone else. The giver passed down memories from the past not the future Liv. The giver mentioned how there were thousands of memories about sledding which means he probably gave Jonas a second sledding memory because there was more than only one memory of sledding. That could be a sign that the giving was warning him he may not make it. When you hear music it would turn off and not go to an echo. Why would they say ¨ But it was just an echo ¨ if he did not die? The book could not have been about the future.

  7. I belive that Jonas and Gabe will not survive, because, Jonas is already starving to death, he is losing his memories and strength to move on. Since he is starving he could easily be either living in a memorie he dosen't want to let go of, or he could easily be hallucinating. Even the singing could be a trick of the mind, the sled could to. Maybe they will survive I don't know for sure but it isn't looking good for Gabe and Jonas from what I've read.
In the book it says on page 22 "But the hill was treacherously steep; he was impeded by the snow and his own lack of strength.

    1. Even though your response is valid. In Elsewhere, they may be able to feed them, and we know that he was very hungry but we don't know if he died from it because we don't know what happened. The memory that you said he might be living in is the one that his life actually may be now.

    2. That thought may be true, but, what if elsewhere never existed? that's just a thought of mine, I don't think there was any evidence in the book saying elsewhere is real?

  8. I think jonas and gabriel are not going to survive becuase when they got in to that crash i think there losing it because they were hearing a echo and think the echo is telling them that like the crash was really bad and there losing there mind because of the crash, on page 223 it said gabriel "he was not warmer if anything he felt more numb and more cold he was not lessexhausted, his steps were lenden and he could barly move huis legs".

  9. I think Jonas and Gabriel won't survive because in the book on page 224 it says that Jonas was slowly losing consciousness and if he lost his consciousness he would not survive in the snow and he would slowly die along with Gabriel because Gabriel will die if someone does not take care of him in the snow.

    1. By losing continusness maybe it means fainting? Sometimes when your experiancing something new or something that is intense that you have never done before.

  10. The only reason why I think they will stay alive is because they are going to be sledding down to somewhere where there is love and the people were singing music.
