  1. I think jonas does not survive because I think he starts hallucinating and dies of starvation because he hears music in his head and it says it sounds like an echo.

    2. So here is the thing browski, in the next few books the author gives hints that Gabe and Jonas survive, for example in Giving Blue it talks about a young school child named Gabe in a different community.

    3. The book never clarifies if the music was real or if it was just an echo. He also saw a light which probably was another community. Lastly Gabriel was never in a memory of sledding so how could Jonas hallucinate about him sledding with Gabriel.

    4. In the Giver, it never says that Jonas was hallucinating. I belive he actually heard music.

  2. I don't think they survived because Jonas' last moments were his memories of sledding and Christmas with Gabe. Jonas and Gabe sledding down the hill could be him entering heaven with Gabe. I also think that Gabe and Jonas died of either starvation or hypothermia. ('Elsewhere' could be like heaven for them.)

  3. I do not think they survived. In the book it says that Jonas was starving and he did not have anymore food, so I think gabriel did not have enough food. You can only survive so long without food. Also a little bit before the end the book says Jonas could not move his legs they were num. Then the book says he heard a echo of people singing. I think it was a hallucination, and he died shortly after that.

    2. I disagree because in the Giver, it says that Jonas saw light. I believe that he saw another community. So, even though they didn't have food, I think they could go to that community and get food and be supported there.

    3. On average, we were told from Mr. Kav the average you can go without food is 7 weeks. Yes some do die before but there's also a chance they die after. Also, why would a sled be awaiting for him? Therefor I think you are wrong and they do survive.

    4. I think the reason the sled was waiting for him was because, he thought of the giver and the sled memory he gave him. Once he thought of the memory, I think the memory slided into a hallucination when he went on the sled that led into his death. That is why I think the sled was there.

  4. He does not survive because he and Gabe both ate raw fish and that's bad, and Raw meat may contain harmful bacteria including Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter and E. coli that can cause food poisoning

    1. How do you know it was raw? He could’ve made a fire to cook it. Also in the end it doesn’t say anything that would end up with the conclusion of harmful bacterias.

      Delete
    2. I disagree Because not all raw meat contains bacteria that are harmful.

    3. That looks copy and pasted, also the book mentions the sled which was there (according to his memories) and that was before the part where he started to hallucinate.

    5. XB 70 Valkyrie: You make good points but the fact that Jonas cut up the fish with the rock, which has a lot of germs, and raw fish makes it clear that they died. Plus when you die your brain releases a bunch of chemicals that make you happy and experience memories.

    6. How do you know that he got salmonella?

    7. Mhm, but I feel like the raw fish is more of a minor point in the book, I feel like the author put that in there to show that they learned to survive out in the "Elseware". Also I read a little bit of the authors note/second book which strongly hints to the possibility of Jonas and Gabe thriving in a different community.

  5. I don't think they survived because the music Jonas heard could have been a hallucination. I think this because in the book it says "But perhaps it was only an echo" showing that it doesn't clarify if it was real or not.

    2. Leah, I don’t agree, because an echo could also be like a loud sound from far away echoing to where Jonas and Gabriel are. If they are still farther away from people they could hear echos of loud voices/music.

    3. This is true, but this shouldn't be included in your evidence because as you said yourself, we cant clarify if he died.

    4. Sure, it doesn't clarify if it is real or not, but think logically. It is very possible that he was hallucinating from hypothermia, so I think that it more leans toward the possibility that he was hallucinating.

    5. i think u are wrong because the music could have been from he house and another community

  6. I think that Jonas was hallucinating due to hypothermia and didn't feel anything at the end because that's how hypothermia works. And at the end he died.

    1. The noises could have been a hallucination but the sled and the music might not have been.

    2. Hmm, I'm not sure but maybe the music was real

    3. It's true he may have been cold, but I think that he was not that cold.

    4. I think the hallucination was the sled and the music might not of been there

  7. In the book in he thought he heard music but ´ it was only an echo´. and maybe the froze to death or he is cold and hallucinating

    1. The noises toward the place he came from may have been a hallucination, but what about the sled or the music in front of him

  8. I don't think they survive because in the book it says Jonas was starving and he didn't have anymore food left. I also think Jonas was hallucinating because there won't just randomly be a sled waiting for Jonas and Gabe at the top of the hill.

    1. I believe that the sled was there because either the Giver put it there somehow, or (more logically), a child from that community left it there non-purposely.

    2. i think u completely right tessywessy there could not be a a sled just waiting for them

  9. or he had hypothermia that caused the hallucinations.

    1. I think Jonas lives because the community needs a giver and also because The Giver gives the memories back to the town so he does not have any bad memories he needs to keep to himself anymore. The community now realizes what they have always been wrong about.

  11. I think when Jonas got to the top of the hill and saw the light, it was another community because her also heard singing that clearly people from the community were singing.

  13. You believe that Jonas and Gabe did not survive? They didn't survive. Elsewhere is heaven, and they both died from hunger and hypothermia. You don't have proof they survived. "Heard music, but perhaps it was only an echo." BIG hint of DEATH overdose.
