  1. I think Jonas and Gabe dont survive because it says gabe was barly stirring. It also says Jonas was on the last of his strength. And finally it says at the end, "across the dictences of space and time...".

    1. The quote is out of context that is the echo of the music he hears from the front were there is real music and a christmas celebration which means he is not dead.

  2. I think that Jonas and Gabe will not survive because in the book it said "elsewhere" which where I think is like heaven because in the book it says"Final destination , the place that he had been waiting for , the Elsewhere that had held their future¨ that future is death and the elsewhere is heaven.

    1. "that held their future in their past" is what it said and the future would be the life that Jonas then will go on to live and the Giver would help the community live. The past is like all the memories the Giver gave Jonas, like from back then when times were normal and there was love, family, and war.

  3. I think Jonas and Gabriel don't survive. I think that because the music they herd was them going into the after life. When Jonas lost consciousnesses and herd the music, it was them going into heaven. In the book it says "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay up right."

    1. I disagree it could have been actual people singing and could have saved him and Gabriel

    2. I think jonas and Gabriel survive because there are multiple books and Jonas is the main character so like why would there be more books if the main character died. Like who would teach all the other little Givers if the old one is literally like decaying. Would the Giver just become no more if there's other books, that's just lame, who would read that

    3. well here's the thing do you think the books just keep going off of the giver which probably not because there is definitely to much books and the story plot would just be way to long and boring so it could not even be related to the giver but jones could be in it. there could be a whole different plot to the other books.

  4. I think Jonas and Gabriel survive because. If you go to page 224 It was saying how he is losing all his energy inside him.

    1. Yes but then it states he opens his eyes and sees a house celebrating christmas so he can't be dead.

    2. I disagree because yes, the book says that he is losing energy, but that's because he's starving, dehydrated, and exhausted. He's been on the run for like, 2 weeks with a child to care for. Plus, it says that he sees the lights and hears the singing from the town. He feels the sled. he just passes out.

  5. i think jonas and gabriel don´t survive because he wanted to leave the community and gabriel went with him so they both have to get injected with this stuff that makes them die so when they go to sleep they will not wake up again.

    1. I disagree about this statement as when leaving the community they ran away not got injected.

    2. I disagree because Jonas and Gabriel don't get injected with the stuff. Them leaving the community acts like getting injected but without the death penalty.

    3. I disagree and I don't see how your reasoning explains why they will not survive. When they left they did not get injected with anything, Gabriel was going to get injected; But he did not because Jonas ran away before he was going to be "released". While he was about to lose consciousness, it was not from a drug that was given to them.

    4. Personally, I think Jonas in fact will survive since he had been going through so many memories that might bring his pain tolerance mentally and physically, and when he saw the memory with the boy that was starving and injured, he got a feel around what many go through. Which might make him realize not everything in the community and outside is full with puppies and rainbows. Seeing that it could help him realize how to survive in many conditions and see the reality of the world. I also think, if he did not know at least a tad of what he might go through of the journey he would not go.

    5. i disagree because at the ending of the book it said he forced his eyes open

  6. Jonas and Gabriel don't survive because in the book it says that Jonas felt himself losing consciousness. It says this on page 224 in paragraph six, "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled." It also say that Jonas heard music but it says that it might just be and echo showing that he doesn't even know if its real himself. On page 225, last paragraph is says this, "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." Ending of the book on that line showing that they didn't make it and they both died.

    1. I disagree. I do agree that Jonas was losing consciousness but I do think that he and Gabriel lived. They were both obviously very weak for most of their journey but I think that when they made it down that hill they had found people that hopefully helped them. While going down the hill it also successfully shows that he had Gabriel traveled elsewhere and hopefully both go to live a normal life.

    2. I disagree the echo is stated but there is also music from in front of Jonas which is real the back is the echo of the front.

    4. Also If you go to page 224 It was saying how he is losing all his energy inside him not his life, Also it says he's losing consciousness that may just be him passing out from the cold. And it says "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled." If he was dying he would not be able to move him self he would be immobilized and slowly or quickly lose life but if you lose consciousness you have a few movements left.

  8. Also, I believe that the people singing and the music represented Jonas's community becoming whole. When Jonas went farther away from the community, the memories were transmitted to the people. Before Jonas left the community, the Giver told Jonas that music is a powerful and beautiful thing. Thus, when the community finally became whole, and everything was much better, Jonas heard music. The music told him without words that he had done his job and that he had helped the people of the community. So, after he heard the music, Jonas could die knowing that he had fulfilled his duty.

  9. I disagree with you because I think Elsewhere is the place that people outside of their little town live. And, although he could've been hallucinating, I don't think he was because he knows what it's like to have family in love which I believe is the music at the end, and also it's very realistic. I can see why it could be an ending and that he could die peacefully, but I think he still has so much life ahead of him and the Giver should be feeling that he's fulfilled his job, not Jonas. Jonas should be the only one who really escaped and can now live a normal life, I think.

  10. In the book it stated the music was coming and in the back back were he came from he could hear music. There are two sources of music not one.

  11. I disagree because when people encounter a near death or injury experience, they think of how to prevent the injury or death to come with a memory of them stopping it before. I believe that Jonas remembering how sliding down the hill rather than walking would help him get down faster to reach the sounds he was approaching. He could have been mixing the hallucination of the sled with the memory of the sledding.

    1. I disagree with you because Jonas was starving at the end of the book. Starving leads to hallucination. Jonas was hallucinating about the sled being there, because the sled ride was one of the first memories transmitted to Jonas and was important to him.
