  1. I think Jonas and Gabriel did not survive because all the odds were against them. They were half frozen and starving to death which may have resulted in hallucinations. The hallucinations that he saw were the lights and people singing. He also thought he heard singing from back at his home in the community. The fact that he thought he heard singing from his community means he is on death's door and does not know what is reality and his imaginations. With all of these things stacked up against them I do not think that there is any way that they could have survived.

    1. I believe that Jonas and Gabe survive, Gabe at least, because that in subsequent books in this quartet, there's a child named "Matty" who acts like a slightly older (and more mature) version of Gabe. Jonas, though, I think his fate is very ambiguous, but since in the book it's narrated that there was no obstacles that would cause Jonas to fall off and die, so the only threat would be running out of momentum, but the narration also says that they were going very fast, so that isn't a threat.

    2. Also about Matty, he could be what became of Gabe after The Giver, as shown in Gathering Blue and Messenger.

    3. The odds may not have been against them. Sometimes you may be surprised how hallucinations can come to life in science fiction

    4. I disagree because even if Jonas and Gabriel were starving and seeing hallucinations, a human can survive for a long time without food and maybe water. Also, someone from the nearby village could probably notice a boy on a sled in the snow. The warmth that he feels when he gets over the mountain probably means that he survives. You don't feel warmth if you are going to die. There are a lot of factors that help Jonas survive.

    5. Yes I do agree that Jonas had the odds stacked against him, however there is still a good chance jonas survived because we know that if jonas died all his memories would go back to the community and that did not happen at the end.

    6. I respectfully do not agree with your input due to some factors. These factors are that Jonas and Gabriel are NOT normal people. They both have the aid of the memories which can aid in their survival and safety, and as far as we know Jonas could have had one last or a few more memories to use up to grant him and Gabriel warmth or food. Although with a very limited supply of such memories, he could use them in combination with his blanket and the body warmth of Gabriel that Jonas would give to him through the memories, to still find a way to survive at least to the point of coma or being unconscious.

    8. I disagree because even if Jonas and Gabriel are freezing, the human body is really strong. Especially if they have been fed well for their entire life.

  2. When Jonas goes down the sled hes not really going down the sled. It's the first memory Jonas got from the Giver, and it's one of his last memories. At the end of the book it says " He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and recognized them now." " He knew they were shining through the windows of room, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places were families created and kept memories where the celebrated love." All of this is the memory that he got from the Giver, the memory of love. The sled and the holidays are not his reality its the memories. And also at the end of the book it says that people were waiting for him, which leads me to my point. I think that they believe in the after life and the people waiting for him are the people in the after life.

    1. I disagree because, at this time Jonas memories are coming to life in his mind or as he is hallucinating, he hears music, now that music that he hears, may or may not display a connection between his community and other communities. At the end of the day, A book is not a book without a sufficient ending.

  3. I disagree, when he finds the sled it is his first memory but that doesn't us that he is dead. The music isn't his last memory he just knows what it is because the giver had the ability to see beyond. He saw a little village before the book ended too that could've been a memory of the christmas tree but it also could've been real because we know it was snowing, in reality we have no real evidence Jonas is dead.

  4. Jonas was hallucinating as he went down the hill. This will not mean that they do not survive. It just means that what they will see next is not anything related to his hallucination

  5. The death of Jonas is highly unlikely due to the plot of the story

  6. The people that were waiting for Jonas were real and they knew he was coming with because they had seen the search planes and guessed what was happening. They had known about the Community and had also figured out that something was going to happen and someone was going to run away. And when he went down the hill he was very cold and tired. So he was still conscious.

  7. I disagree with your opinion because of the fact that that's not how memories really work, if somebody dies the first memory that they received isn't gonna come back to them, in fact it might be the opposite with the memories going back to the community. And as far as releasing goes, Jonas was not being released, for we know that releasing someone is KILLING them by INJECTION. We don't even know if Jonas and Gabe are unconscious or Dead, we just know that Jonas saw everything fading around him as he lost his senses.
