  1. i believe people should not be required to stand during the pledge of allegiance or national anthem because the first amendment states that the people have freedom of speech and can express their views through non-violent means.

    1. THAT IS WRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOONGGGGGGGGGGGG AND I DISAGREE BECAUSE I think that Athletes should be required to stand for the National Anthem. I think this because when you stand you show respect to our country when you kneel you show disrespect for the flag and members of the armed forces. When you stand your showing you are supportive for our country. They should stand to show a sign of patriotism. Also not standing for the national anthem make many people angry, and chaos.

  2. They should have to stand during the national anthem. I think it's disrespectful to the people the anthem represents. Professional athletes would not be where they are if we didn't fight in all the wars America fought in. The anthem represents those people who fought in the war. I also think its making the sport look bad. No one wants to join a professional sport just to get caught up in some political disagreement. Therefore, the people who choose to kneel during the anthem are disrespecting the people who fought to let them be there, and making the sport they play for look bad.

    1. I believe that when they stand it is better than showing what they believe in in a violent way with fights and riots.

    2. I actually don't think they should have to stand because it is peaceful protest - something that is stated in the constitution and something that people fight for - it is part of their freedom of speech. People fought for the freedom to do things like this.
Not only that but due to the popularity will bring this to attention. This will make it a highly controversial topic - and it is.

    3. I disagree. The athletes that kneeled during the anthem were peacefully protesting. They didn't want to stand for the anthem of a country that didn't treat people fairly. Even though people think that not standing is disrespecting the flag and people that fought for our country, there is no rule that says they are required to stand.

  3. I feel that athletes should not have to stand for the national anthem. The first amendment states we have the right to assemble. This technically means that we have the right to peacefully protest. This protest is completely peaceful and does not violate any constitutional rights. They are trying to take a stand of racism and unequal treatment which is a real problem in the US. Why do we have any right to tell them that they cannot stand up (or not stand up) for what they believe in. The way some people of color are being treated is not right so they should stand up for themselves.

    1. I disagree I think that athletes should stand for the national anthem The national anthem is a way of paying your respects to the people who have risked their lives for our country. It would be a disrespectful and a dishonor to not stand. When we stand for the anthem it is a formal way to show that we are united and we are proud to be part of this country.

  4. I strongly think that professional athletes should stand during the national anthem. Not standing during the national anthem is not only rude, but spitting in the face of America, our founding fathers, and the armed forces. The great great granddaughter of the writer of the national anthem has been quoted to say:"it just blows my mind that somebody like (Kaepernick) would do what he does to dishonor the flag of this country and the national anthem when we have young men and women overseas fighting for this country, people that have died for this country." Not to mention not standing during the anthem divides this country far more than it's supposed to heal it. The mere fact that we are having this debate is proving my point. Kapernich wanted to point out that black lives matter from kneeling during the anthem. But instead everyone is arguing about standing or not standing instead of the topic he wanted to highlight.

    1. I disagree with your statement. This is because kneeling for the National Anthem is not disrespecting the flag or America. It is just simply showing a peaceful protest which is stated in the first amendment and it also gave them the freedom of speech. They are just expressing their rights and have no intentions of disrespecting anything or anyone.

  5. I believe that all professional athletes should be required to stand for the National Anthem. I believe this because in our country, the National Anthem represents freedom and what our country lost during hardship. Thus if you were to sit, you would be indirectly mirroring you don't admire what the country fought for to get us where we are today.

    1. As you said, the National Anthem represents freedom. So if these athletes don't think that they have freedom in this country, then why would they admire that by standing up for the National Anthem?

    2. I disagree, the athleates were not standing to be disrespectful. They do it to show the world about the issues in our country.

  6. I think professional athletes should not be required to stand during the National Anthem, when important athletes decide not to stand during the Anthem it brings attention to the fact that not all people have their freedom, liberty, and justice which is important. When we stand for the National Anthem we pay respect to those who died fighting for freedom, liberty, and justice for ALL, but people don't see that there is still racial inequality. Not standing for the Anthem is not violent in any sort of way, and is a peaceful protest which is allowed by the 1st amendment.

  7. Professional athletes should most certainly be required to stand for the national anthem because they should be proud that it's their country and they are in a free country. It's not only rude to sit down but its very disrespectful to america as much as it is for anybody to be keeping their hat on during the national anthem. Not standing up during the national anthem proves that you are a very uncaring person and you should be ashamed of yourself.

    1. I don't think they should be required to stand and more implied to stand. If someone is choosing to sit then that acceptable and not disrespectful because it is a free country or "Land of the free!" as the anthem says.

  8. I think athletes should stand for the National Anthem. I think this because kneeling insults the American flag, and the armed forces. According to wwww.procon.org the anthem pays repect to the people who sacraficed their lives for our country. According to www.procon.org kneeling during the anthem has caused hatred and division in our country. For example after Kaepernick knelt during the anthem many people burned his jersey to show how much they are mad. A third reason is according to Obama kneeling during the anthem doesnt to send the message that wants to be sent, because people look toward what the anthem stands for, the people that served our country, and they don look toward the message that is being sent.

    1. Personally, I disagree. I believe that professional athletes should have either the option to stand for the anthem or stay in the locker room. It is very disrespectful to kneel during the national anthem, but professional athletes have the right to stand or kneel during the national anthem. Being required to stand literally violates the 1st Amendement, our freedom of expression.

  10. I think that professional athletes should not be required to stand for the National Anthem. I think this is fair because not standing for National Anthem is a form of speech or protest for something the athlete believes in. In the first amendment to the constitution it states that U.S. citizens have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of petition. I don't see how the athletes have gone outside of their rights by not standing for the National Anthem.

  13. I think that athletes shouldn't have to stand for the national anthem. I think this because if there doing it as a peaceful protest it's one of first amendment that say you can do it. Everyone has the right in this country to sit, stand, roll on the floor,or knell during the anthem.

  14. I believe that athletes should not be required to stand for the national anthem. The NFL authorized a new rule that athletes are not allowed to kneel, but instead can hang out in the locker rooms, if they choose to. So, basically it's a compromise. But, shouldn't shouldn't athletes have a voice in this matter? Athletes aren't just athletes, they're also human beings. They experience they same things we all do. Some of them see or may even experience the dark side of our nation. I also just recently saw a Nike Kaepernick ad, and in summary, it said that if you truly believe in something, you should be willing to give up anything for it. Kaepernick believed in equality for America, and in exchange he lost his career. But he never lost his voice.

  15. I believe that professional athletes should not be required to stand, as I recall, the first person to kneel during the national anthem was a colored man, in the past we have not treated them very well, and even now, we still do not treat them with the respect they deserve. "San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first refused to stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner" on Aug. 26, 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States." We have treated people of color unfairly, and he could not stand for it, He's trying to make a difference. Also, "Not standing for the national anthem is a legal form of peaceful protest, which is a First Amendment right."
I believe it's alright for them to speak out and do something about something they believe in.

  16. I think that athletes should not be required to stand during the national Anthem. Because when most athletes don't stand it's supposed to show something or mean something. Like when Colin Kaepernick, Eli Harold and Eric Reid kneeled during the national anthem. And they did this because they are protesting in racial injustice. And back in the olympics of 1968 Tommie smith and John Carlos raise a black during the medal ceremony. They are doing the same protest basicly. So I think people should not have to stand if they are protesting and show what they are protesting about.

  18. I think they should be required to stand during the National Anthem. Back in the 2015-2016 season Colin Kapernick star quarterback decided to hold his fist up and knell during the nation anthem to try to prove a point about the inequality in our country. The world reacted heavily to this it was all around the news and people had mixed opinions of it. I think players should be required to stand. I think this because these guys are playing the most popular sport in America millions of people watching and they disrespect our country by sitting. That is not what kids should be shown. Me myself loves football and I thought it was foolish he did that but some people might take after him because he was a star when this happened and the 49ers might be their favorite team. Also these guys live in America and the national anthem is an American song. Like that is dissing our country and its shouldn't be okay. Now other players are doing it and they look foolish as well in my eyes. Colin Kapernick hasn't been on a team since this whole situation happened. In 2013 Colin Kapernick led his team to the superbowl and fell short. He was also considered one of the best Quarter backs in the whole world. Currently he is a free agent and teams who have quarterback struggles don´t want him because he sits during the national anthem. That is the main reason why I think you should be forced to stand in the NFL

  19. I believe that, while professional athletes have every right to kneel, it shouldn't be done. The national anthem isn't about race or police brutality. It is simply about being a part of this country. The Star Spangled Banner pays tribute to the soldiers that lost their lives fighting for the United States. It also shows respect to the police officers that risk their lives each day to protect this country. Therefor, professional athletes, despite race, should stand during the Star Spangled Banner.

  21. I think that athletes should not be required to stand for the national anthem. I think so because not standing for the anthem is used as a protest against still existing inequality for African Americans. I think it is a symbol of the racial inequality. According to some football players, they are simply trying to make America a better place for all races. It is a form of peaceful protest, and it calls this issue to the attention of many viewers across the United States so racial inequality can be acted upon. As the NFL players' league says,"NFL players love their country, support our troops, give back to their communities, and strive to make America a better place. People such as Donald Trump don't agree with this though. The NFL's new rule says that players must stand for the anthem or stay in the locker room until the song was over. Otherwise, players could face major punishments. I feel the government is not acknowledging the purpose that kneeling for the anthem was for. However, my hope is that the US will no longer make a big deal about these protests and worry about the sport, not the politics going on with it.

  23. I think professional athletes should be required to stand for the National Anthem because it shows respect and honor towards America and how being American is great. If they don't stand it looks like they don't care and are against the National Anthem, and they don't respect and honor America and Americans. America is a family, and not standing up in the National Anthem means you left the family, and we should all stick together no matter what.

  25. I lean more towards that professional athletes should be required to stand during the national anthem. I think this because it can be more polite and respectful to the united states of america flag. if the professional athletes don't stand it could lead to some disrespect to both the flag and members of the armed forces who had risked their lives, been injured or even died defending the united states flag. this flag has also given us a chance to speak out.

  26. I think that athletes should be required to stand. The reason that some athletes choose to kneel is because of inequality in America. This doesn't match with the reason that we stand, which is to honor the 1.2 million Americans who died for our freedom. By kneeling, the athletes are not only protesting against inequality, but they are also disrespecting the people who lost their lives so we could live in a free country. It is also dividing our country when we are supposed to be a united nation.

  28. To start this off, YES I think professional athletes should stand for the National Anthem. Well as long as they're in the US, or living there. The National Anthem reflects the US, pro athletes wouldn't have even got their job if it wasn't for the US.

Since August of 2016, people have been kneeling for the National Anthem in football. Before that there were many other pro athlete protests as well, like in 1968 when Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their right fist and looked down, away from the flag at the Summer Olympics.
Not standing for the flag shows disrespect to the flag, our soldiers, and our country. Without any of this pro athletes may not be where we are today, maybe not even our nation. Also not standing for the National Anthem is an ineffective way to promote any cause, even if it is racism. If you stand you lose supporters of your cause, if there were any, maybe they might not care about the country, but many americans do, it angers many as well. Also law can’t be changed just because of a couple of protests. The reason the athletes are on the field/court/etc. Is to play football, not to start a protest! In the end there most likely won’t be any successful outcome.

  29. believe that you should be required to stand or to not attend the pledge, or by staying in the locker room or something along the lines of that. I believe this because sitting down during the pledge is not protesting against something wrong with the US its protesting against the entire US and all it stands for,and that is where I think it is wrong. The pledge is a time to truly show that you are a US citizen, not to deny it. Also it has been hugely misinterpret so even if they mean good things chances are people will misinterpret it and their message won´t get out.

  30. I believe that pro athletes should stand for the National Anthem. I think this because their ancestors fought to get here, they hid away, snuck out on boats with little food and water. Their great-grandparents were so thankful to get to America. They came from nothing, and America gave them a chance. These pro athletes on the other hand, have everything (wealth, fame, jobs, shelter) and can't spend 1 minute and 45 seconds giving thanks to everyone who allowed them to have this life and everyone who made sacrifices, to keep their country at peace. I understand that they want equality, but this is not the way to protest.

  31. I believe that you should not be required to stand during the National Anthem. When someone is sitting or kneeling , they have all the right to ,the 1st amendment says so. One of the reasons why they will do so is because people believe that the U.S. oppresses people of color, their freedom, or people's expression of religion and a change should should happen. All of these people are protesting in a peaceful way that gives them a voice and starts a conversation going. I hope that if you are not sure on whenever or not you should support the idea of kneeling during the flag, I have changed your mind or at least put you in a mindset that is understanding that people do this to spread attention to their issue not out of disrespect.

  32. People have different interpretations of almost everything. When people choose to stand up for the anthem, they might want to pay respect to US Army soldiers, but that does not mean that someone who does not stand up for the Anthem, tries to disrespect them. Even though they do not stand up for the anthem, they still sing the lyrics. They bring attention to an important issue like police brutality, while still paying respect to the soldiers who risk their lives. No one should be forced to stand up for the anthem because they have a different point of view. This is not an illegal crime, it is only a way to express their point of view, or take a stand against something they think is wrong with our society. When someone with a big voice like athletes, might want to influence the world to make it a better place, and they do that by taking a stand. Their freedom to express and take a stand should not be violated.- FarshadTajik

I think that Athletes should stand for the National Anthem. I think they should stand because it shows pride in your country and it shows that you are an proud american. Not standing for the National Anthem shows disrespect for the flag and to the people who fought for our country. Kaepenick and others who knelt for the national Anthem is causing division between teams, fans and the country. Others are also saying that why would you be disrespecting the National Anthem that men and women fought for and gave us our freedom and rights.
