“You said that to me once before.”
“I said it because it’s true. It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them.”

Does 10 million dead animals sound like a lot to you? Well, that’s how many animals die per year due to animal abuse. In one story, a crossbreed dog was left in a hot car in the parking lot of a superstore. He was in the car barking and breathing heavily. The staff of the store made 2 announcements on the PA to the owner, but he didn’t come and get the dog out of the car. Luckily, the dog made an escape through a window a police officer smashed in. Animals who’s abuse is the most reported are dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. “There are approximately 70 million pet dogs and 74.1 million pet cats in the U.S where 20 men and women are assaulted per minute” states the human society website. Dogfighting is a form of organized cruelty, where owners take dogs and purposely put them up to fight other dogs. In a survey taken, 71% of domestic violence victims said that their abuser was also violent towards animals, which means that just as much as humans are in danger, so are animals.

Does consuming 195 pounds of meat per year sound like a lot? Well, in the 1950s people were only consuming 130 pounds of meat! In the 1980s and the 1990s fats were our arch nemesis, since the 80s and 90s consuming added fats grew by over two thirds. Also consuming grain grew by over 45% since the 1970s. In America, people have been burning a lot less calories since 50 years ago, in fact, nowadays people are burning 120 to 140 less calories than they did 50 years ago in a day. You would expect a lot of jobs to require physical movement, right? Well, in the 1950s, 50% of jobs required physical movement, now adays only 20% of jobs require physical movement. The weight to be overweight now is about 203 pounds or higher.

Does exclusion based on appearance seem unfair? It does, doesn’t it. Despite the exclusion being based upon something so insignificant and meager, more than 40% of people in America believe that it has become acceptable. “My son does not want to go to school and he does not feel safe and becomes silent,” says a quoted Indian mother. “He refuses to talk anymore, he is depressed and stressed and always says it is better to die than go to school.” And her son is not the only one. Others who have been victims to racism suffer from PTSD, low self esteem, and isolation. It can even go further and affect the victims community and society, including people at home, school, friends, church, and all over. That can lead to conflict and eventually lead to a large number of people getting injured. Racism can even go as far as making a simple word into something that can cause a huge problem. Bystanders who witness a racial incident only intervene 31% of the time when in a group. And sometimes, a bystander doing nothing is much worse than a bystander not being present to the incident in the first place. And when a victim is in this type of scenario, they can grow to believe that racism is accepted in the community, and that acceptance of racism can have a much worse effect and even affect more than just the victim. Racism has even come to the point where a racial incident can lead to someone deliberately killing themselves.

Does 28,000 deaths in one earthquake seem right to you? During an earthquake in Ecuador, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake led to hundreds of deaths, and over 20,000 people injured, and most of the deaths were caused by falling buildings! So many lives could be saved if only we had one thing. Better buildings. If we had better structured buildings, then over 100,000 lives would be saved yearly. Better structured buildings would help families feel safer, especially if they live in places where earthquakes happen often. An abundant amount of money is spent on rebuilding buildings that have fallen down. About 1-3 billion dollars is spent rebuilding buildings. Doesn’t that sound like a total waste of money on things that can be fixed easily? Imagine how many lives could be saved if we only had better buildings.

Did you know that the most common victims of animal abuse are dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. I mean why would you ever want to abuse a cute little puppy or a cute little kitty? According to Humanesociety.org “Serious animal neglect (such as hoarding) is often an indicator of people in need of social or mental health services.” This happens across america every single day but only 49 states have laws to prevent animal torture. And let’s not forget that even with the states that have animal abuse laws the animal abuse is still happening, not to mention the states without animal abuse laws *ahem* Iowa. The most common places of animal abuse is in urban and rural areas, and only few are ever reported, and out of those even fewer are prosecuted. Most intentional abuse cases are men under 30 years old, and most animal hoarding cases are most likely women over 60. 71% of all domestic violence victims reported that their abuser also targeted pets.

If you have been associated with basketball for a while, you have heard about flopping. Mainly in the NBA, Players like Joel Embiid, James Harden, Lebron James, and many are doing this on a nightly basis. Flopping is one of the most annoying things about basketball. So that's why Basketball leagues like the WNBA, ABA, and much more should wake up to flopping. The NBA has a series of rules for this 2023-24 season, like technical fouls and fines. Joe Vardon and Sam Amik from the Athletics state“In short, the NBA officials will have a short and easily memorizable acronym to remember the guidelines”. Another reason that basketball should wake up is that

Many older people forget the names of close relatives or misplace things. This type of forgetfulness is normal. But, forgetting how to reach home, having trouble with daily tasks, and repeatedly asking questions can be signs of a more serious problem. Alzheimer’s Disease is a type of dementia that destroys memory and mental functions, and is usually present in people over the age of 65. However, the disease itself is not the only problem. Alzheimer's is complex, and as the intensity of the symptoms increase, so do health care costs. Alzheimer's affects more than just the individual with the disease. Many friends and family provide hours of unpaid care annually. According to the National Institute of Health, "Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s can have significant physical, emotional, and financial costs. The demands of day-to-day care, changes in family roles, and decisions about placement in a care facility can be difficult." Further, people living with alzheimer's may have at least one other chronic condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or stroke. Alzheimer's complicates the management of these conditions, resulting in poorer health outcomes and increased health care costs.

There’s a viral TikTok going around; perhaps you’ve seen it? It’s a shot of an audience watching the new “Mean Girls” musical movie. The theater fills up with groaning and laughing (some even leave the screening) when a character breaks into song. Musical movie attendance has been dropping. This is quite certainly partly due to the fact that musical movie producers are embarrassed of their own movies! It’s not the audience’s fault that they groaned at the song. “Forbes” writer Conor Murray says: “The official trailer for “Mean Girls,” released by Paramount Pictures in November, doesn’t contain any of the film’s original music…”. And this is not a standalone occasion. The new “Wonka” movie is a musical, and there is also no original music in the trailers! This is not to say that these movies flopped, it’s quite the opposite. They’re both doing very well at the box office. Other musical movies, such as “West Side Story” and “The Color Purple” flopped, and it made producers scared. The “Wicked” movie trailer aired during the Superbowl, and guess what? No original music. There’s one thing on all our minds (I know it): why? Why not advertise the music? Let the people who like it go, and not trick people who don’t want to go? Musicals have a devoted fanbase of millions. The answer, as always, is capitalism. The producers want a maximum payout from their movies, and they must not care much about the art. But it looks like another one of capitalism’s little ploys is backfiring; this is turning more people off to musical movies than their music was. So if you like musicals and want to support the industry, you could go see one of these movies, as most of them are masterpieces, based off of the most artful of broadway musicals; show the people you actually don't have to trick someone into liking art!

Did you know that 20% of the modern day youth use electronic cigarettes? That’s only 1 out of every 5 modern day youth in our society! “A study from the University of North Carolina found that the two primary ingredients found in e-cigarettes—propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin—are toxic to cells,” - American Lung Association. Electronic cigarettes also contain other hazardous substances, for example acetaldehyde, formaldehyde and even acrolein which is used in items like weed killer. Some of the excruciating diseases these chemicals can cause include lung disease, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Youths that take in chemicals from electronic cigarettes also even have increased asthma exacerbations.

People grow up in life, it can’t be helped. Growing up is especially prominent in the teen years, or puberty. This is when your brain and body are changing. It is pretty exciting to find out more about yourself. But while our brains are developing, we can be swayed easily because our friends tell us that we should do things we know are wrong. You probably know what this is. It is peer pressure. Peer pressure can make many teen lives horrible because of one bad decision. Let’s say your friends are drinking, and they tell you to have a drink. That can lead you down the wrong path. Same with smoking. But it may be hard to say no, but your body does know what is right for you. So, when you start to speak up and say no, it is your frontal lobe helping you out. Your frontal lobe is right under your forehead. When you hit puberty it starts to grow rapidly, and communicate with the other parts of your brain more. Making you make more rational decisions. If you see one of your friends show signs of being affected by peer pressure, talk it out with them to try and help them through it. But if they refuse to talk about it, give them some space to work it out on their own. Peer pressure is a major problem that makes many kids' lives take a deep dive in the wrong direction.

How would you respond if I told you that 25.6 million non-elderly people in the U.S don’t have health insurance? That’s because they are from low-income families, with only one worker in the household. “... and the effects on health status are much more similar to those of poorer and less successful Third World countries than they are to those of the rest of the industrial world.” According to Bruce Vladeck, an author featured in the Universal Library of Medicine.
ReplyDeleteThis debt is not from a stock market crash or anything, it’s because the U.S government has lacked motivation to find justice for those who can’t afford to care medically for themselves or their families. Have you noticed the weather getting warmer? Over the past 10,000 years the climate has been increasing in temperature at an alarming rate and we humans aren’t helping either. A NASA study states “ Carbon dioxide from human activities is increasing about 250 times faster than it did from natural sources after the last Ice Age”. Now 10,000 years may seem like a long time but there is also recent evidence that humans have been impacting climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on climate change says “ Since systematic scientific assessments began in the 1970s, the influence of human activity on the warming of the climate change system has evolved from a theory to an established fact’’. Climate change may be a complicated subject to understand and reading complicated articles may leave you feeling confused and uninterested. A simple explanation is people burn things like gasoline while driving. It goes into the air polluting it. The gas gets trapped in the atmosphere creating a lair of greenhouse gasses between the earth and the sun. When the sun shines on the earth it is heated but because of the layer of gas a very little amount of heat escapes, and the remaining heat continues to heat the surface of the earth. This heat affects things like weather and the seasons creating climate change. Climate change happens naturally after things like ice ages but the combination of nature and modern human equipment has climate change and global warming at an all time high. This change in climate has impacted nature so much that now scientists look at things like tree rings, ocean sediments, and coral reefs for evidence of when climate change began and how much of an impact it has on nature.

Did you know that vaping and smoking is bad well if you didnt here are some facts that will prove to you that vaping and smoking is bad. For starters did you know that curosity peer pressure and depression are some of the most common ways that the youth start vaping. Also vaping is known to make your lungs black and that is not a good thing and also if you vape or smoke you are more likely to run out of breath faster than the ones who do not vape. Here is how vapes are set up, E cigarettes create an aeroseal by using a battery to heat up a liquid that usually contains nicotine and flavors and many other addictives. There are many effects of vaping and brain damage, cancer and trouble focusing are some of the most common effects of vaping and smoking. Also scientists are figuring out that people who are advertised about vapes and ciggarettes are more likely to start vaping and smoking then the people who are not advertised.

Do hot and warm temperatures year-round sound appealing to you at the expense of our atmosphere? New atmospheric studies show that while the weather in the troposphere is heating, the upper atmosphere is cooling three times faster due to CO2 pollution. Space organizations like NASA are very concerned because this is affecting orbiting satellites. Climate Modeler Santer says, "We are fundamentally changing that thermal structure”, he says. “These results make me very worried.” CO2 pollution is entirely human made. 40 billion tons of CO2 gas have been released into the atmosphere. Scientists predict a doubling of CO2 levels later in this century. Experts are discovering this is more dangerous than it seems. CO2 and other chemicals are tampering with earth's temperature, air density, and chemistry of the upper atmosphere. CO2 polluters like Exxon Mobil value money over saving earth's climate. If we decrease CO2 pollution dramatically then we could save our earth.

Starvation KILLS over 300 million people every year all around the world! Most of the starvation deaths happen in the country, Somalia. There are different types of ways people starve. One of the ways are when muslims fast by not eating any food during the day. Another way people starve is just because they can't afford food. Once you start starving after not eating for 20-23 hours. Your body's amino acids stop working this causes your muscles to get weaker and sometimes organs can shut down. There are so many side effects to starvation one of the first symptoms are dizzy and then you start noticing your getting weaker you start hallucinating and it is possible that you can pass out. Now if you start eating again you'll feel more symptoms because your brain has to adapt to food because you haven't had it in a long time. According to doctors you'll feel a little weird and start having the same symptoms you had when you first started starving. I think that Governments should come together and help people from starving by dropping off food packs every two weeks.

Imagine this, you wake up to just another everyday morning and everything seems normal, until it happens. You just looked in the mirror. In a flash you notice all the flaws in your imperfect body. Your stomach turns into knots and your self esteem is ruined. This may seem like an unnatural experience, but unfortunately this is an everyday occurrence with people that suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder. This is why I think people need to notice the condition known as BDD. BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder) was first described by Enrico Morselli in 1891 as a phobia of thinking oneself as flawed. He talks about how it brought a major negative impact on the person and affects their daily life. People often ask “why BDD needs help?” . It's important to take notice of it because it can lead to many dysfunctions in your active life. One way this can happen is in your physical life. Some symptoms that have connections with BDD is excessive mirror checking, camouflaging with the crowd, and comparing oneself to others. Other negative side effects can be participating in actions to change appearance, like cosmetic surgery, excessive grooming, excessive weight lifting, etc. Not having it treated can also lead to poor mental health. Some ways BDD can affect you mentally are symptoms such as depression, suicidal thoughts or in worse cases, commiting suicide. Medical professionals claim BDD is often never treated because it is often hard or impossible to notice. BDD can lead to many defects in social, mental, physical or academic life and has many problems that need to be treated, so this is why I think people need to notice Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Many people of different races have negative stereotypes pointed towards them, which can leave a lasting impact. Although most people say they don’t stereotype, everyone will most likely do so in situations where they feel unsafe. These racial stereotypes are mental shortcuts based on past experiences you’ve had yourself, or what society has done to create these stereotypes that influenced your mindset on different races. But these assumptions are rarely accurate and are known as a “cognitive bias”. Once you have a certain mindset towards a certain minority of people, it’s difficult to change, which can lead to “Discriminatory Behavior”. Most stereotypes are developed in younger years due to what you were told as a kid. In 2010, researchers conducted a study on how a person can change after being stereotyped. The results showed changes in behavior where they lacked self control and it also led to aggression. Stereotyping someone can also lead to people trying to fit into those stereotypes, even if it's negative. Those who get put into the mindset that their race engages in the wrong things, will most likely do the same.

The Average amount of video games per day for a child is three hours. At first this might sound bad, but according to some studies, this much time on video games can make your brain better at memorizing information and speed along with accuracy on brain tests. “This study adds to our growing understanding of the association between playing video games and brain development,” said NIDA director Nora Volkow M.D. “This study suggests that there may also be cognitive benefits associated with this popular pastime, which are worthy of further investigation.” One ongoing study by the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) states that three or more hours of video games per day gives you more brain activity and attention span.

What would happen if you were in school for over 8+ hours and you were sitting in 80- 120 minute classes a day for 5 times a week. Around 35 hours of our week is sitting in a room. There are 168 hours in the week subtracted by 35ish hours. This doesn't include hours of Extracurricular Activities, Sports, Socializing, Sleeping and more. socializing. Research shows that 89% out of 100% think students will want shorter school days. Shorter school days would help students develop socially, mentally, and physically. Because of longer school days, students become too tired to concentrate in class because they are too exhausted. By shortening the school days, students will have more time to focus on other things. Having shorter days can help students get reorganized, getting more sleep, catching up with homework and re-gaining focus when they come back the next day. This will help students by making them feel less stressed. It also helps teachers to plan their next lesson and get a chance to get everything organized and get the work they need to get done, For example grades. For one year on school utilities are around 6 billion dollars. Having one less day would lower the cost by around 5%.

Does 62,000 a year sound like a lot of money to you? That is how much money an average player in the WNBA(women's national basketball association) makes a year. Compared to other jobs it's really not. Especially not to the NBA ( national basketball association). The NBA makes 110 times more money on average. There is definitely unequal pay in the sports industry. In the women's fifa world cup 60% of their players had to get unpaid leave from their second job to play. There are some D1 women's soccer players that are finding themselves training for their sports at 8pm/10pm training slots or even later. They are second priority to their male counterparts. They should get equal space in their gym. I believe that we have to make a huge improvement in the sports industry.

Does 800,000 people sound like a lot to you? Well that's how many people die from suicide each year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for young people, and since COVID it has only gotten worse. Peoples mental health has declined by a ton since 2000. In the first ten months of COVID there were 5,586 recorded youth suicides. Social media also hasn't helped at all. Social media makes people depressed because people only post highlights of their life, never the bad things. People compare their lives to others and this causes people to get depressed. Depression is the main cause of why people commit suicide. Depression can be cured. Most people that say that they have gotten help for their depression say that they have been cured. Since social media makes people depressed a few ways to not be on it as much as putting a screen time on it. Another way is doing hobbies instead of going on your phone.

Adding to this, every city and county must lower waste by 75% by 2025.According to FAOUS 8-10% of GGHG can feed more then 1 bill people.
ReplyDeleteImagine droughts and other disasters everywhere and low water supplies, well that's what the future looks for us, and for everyone else because almost 250,000 people die a year due to high temperatures from climate change. Climate change is an issue all over the world and it’s been heating the planet for a long, long time. Droughts are taking place in countries and continents that need it. Climate change is heat from the sun being reradiated by 5 different Kinds of greenhouse gasses. The five greenhouse gasses are Methane, Carbon dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons and water vapor. Climate change will continue to grow due to the heat that will let more water vapor into the air and then the water vapor will be used as a greenhouse gas and will reradiate the heat, but there is hope because 97% of scientists are studying climate change and are already trying to find out how to stop it. The consumption of oil, coal, and gas are contenders of climate change. This is true because the burning of coal, and the burning of oil puts CO2 into the air and that CO2 is used as a greenhouse gas. Lastly we are the main contenders of climate change. We burn the gasses with our cars and gas stoves, and we use the coal for furnaces or industries. The trees take CO2 out the atmosphere and were the ones cutting them down to make shelters, tables and pencils.
