The amount of overdose related deaths each year has increased a lot over the years. Does that sound scary? How about the fact that 92% of those deaths were preventable? There are many statistics that prove how bad overdosing has gotten. Even amongst the young there have been several deaths related to drug overdoses. Over 7,500 people aged from 0-24 died from overdose in 2021. We're talking about how even minors have met this kind of fatality. Most of these preventable deaths were related to opioid drugs. Opioid drugs such as fentanyl, heroin, and others account for 77% of preventable overdoses.

Are we spending too much time on our electronics? Yes, yes we are. A U.S. adult spends up to 6.3 hours on their phone and teens spend up to 9 hours on their phone. That is 2.7 more hours than an adult. Staying on your electronics for that long can cause Myopic. Myopic is an Eyesight condition that makes things far away blurry, also known as Nearsighted. If you read on electronics it could cause Myopic which is why it is better to read on printed paper. Being on electronics can also cause poor eye strains. Poor eye strains is kinda like pink eye they have the same effects. They get tired, sore or itchy eyes, dry or watery eyes. Eye strain causes a burning sensation in your eyes, blurred eyesight, or double vision. The screen time cuts into their sleep. Electronics mess up sleeping patterns, and negatively impact concentration and brain development.
ReplyDeleteOne out of every five deaths is caused from smoking. That is very concerning considering that about 25 million people smoke in the United States. Angie P said, "My hope is to help other people, especially LGBTQ+ people, understand what the tobacco companies are trying to do with their advertising. I'd tell them it's not worth it to smoke," said Angie "Their lives and their health are worth more." Most people that use cigarettes, vapes and tobacco are actually disabled. This means they are at higher risk of death. Most smokers also make low income. This is a problem because they should be spending their money on things they need and not cigarettes and vapes that can kill them. Women that smoke while pregnant can be affecting their baby in the womb. About 400 infants die every year because of smoking mothers. About 16 million people in the United States live with diseases due to smoking. Cigarettes have caused over five hundred thousand deaths in just one year in the United States. Tobacco on the other hand has caused a whopping seven million deaths worldwide in a single year.

DeleteShould you have all your rights in school? You mostly do, but teachers or other adults at school ignore that factor. It says in The Constitution (more specifically The First Amendment) we have the freedom of speech. So you think in school we have the freedom of speech by law. No, because all of a sudden that is taken away from us when we go to school. Now schools can't take our rights from us because we’re at a specific location. Yes we can get in trouble with our choice of words but that doesn’t mean we’re limited/restricted to our freedom to speak. Think about it, would you like to be restricted to your rights for speech? Also if they take your phone without your full compliance that is theft if the phone is not in use. It is also illegal for a teacher to go through your phone without a search warrant or permission from the owner of the device. They can’t discipline you for sex stereotypes or for a walkout. They can discipline you for skipping class.

Have you ever been sitting in your living room watching your favorite sports team, and a referee makes a bad call that costs them the game? Well this is because refs resort to human error, but AI can help with that. Artificial intellegence or better known as AI has taken the internet by storm these past couple years, but it hasn't been apllied to sports. AI has only been applied to a handful of sports like water diving, but the major Sports industries like the NBA, MLB, NFL, and the NHL still haven't been utilized yet, but they are trying to incorparate it. AI can be used in many different ways for diverse sports. AI can be utilized with motion tracking in the MLB to see if the runner beat the throw to the base or in the NFL to see if a player was off sides or to see if a quarterback threw the ball before he hit the ground.

When you go to a highly populated area at night, such as a city and look up, what would you see? If not in a city at the moment, most people would simply say "stars." Unfortunately, in many cities, this is not the case. Looking up, you would most likely be met with a black canvas with a smidge of white dots. Not many stars, huh? This is due to a type of pollution called light pollution, the excessive use of artificial light, and we desperately need to fix it. Light pollution is a global issue, and it has only become an increasingly larger problem within the past few decades. Only the most deserted places, like Siberia and the Sahara Desert, are shrouded in complete darkness. Obviously, light pollution is also a massive problem for astronomers, as it has become increasingly difficult to see stars at night. Humans are not the only lifeforms negatively affected by light pollution, though. Many animals that depend on moonlight for migration, such as sea turtles or birds, often lose their way and die. Light pollution has also changed our behavior and animals' behaviors. An example of this includes our sleep cycle, which is negatively affected for animals too. The presence of light, especially blue light, makes our body produce less melatonin, a chemical that helps us sleep. Even at night, melatonin production is slowed. Artificial light early in the morning when it is still dark makes animals' think it is almost daytime, and our bodies can also sometimes think alike. Obviously, people have noticed all these problems, so many cities have developed "lights out" programs where they turn off all or most artificial lights during migration. Unfortunately, this is not enough yet. Most animals and humans' sleep patterns have or will be permanently affected for the majority of their lives.

Have you ever seen someone do something awful or wrong to another person? Maybe you have seen someone in school do something mean or disrespectful. But have you ever thought about why they did that? Most people think they did it to be mean or to hurt someone's feelings, but have you ever thought it is something like their mental health or how others have acted toward them? Mental health is such a problem that 1 in 4 adults have a mental disorder, and 21% of adults struggle with their mental health. Having bad mental health can and will affect you severely throughout your life. Too little's known about the social context of why. Research supports the view that the mentally ill are more often victims than the perpetrators in violent situations. People like Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui-Cho, and Salvador Ramos were all people who woke up and decided that instead of trying to help themselves, they would take their anger and frustration out of kids and classmates. What had influenced them was violent acts around them such, as abuse from home or school, and violent influences like videos, music, or books also all affected them but what had affected them the most was their mental health. Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui-Cho, and Salvador Ramos all had mental disorders that severely influenced their actions.

6,000 babies are born with down syndrome out of 140 million every year. The ways people of all ages rather their 40 or 4 they don't know how to handle people with these disabilities. Have you ever seen stories on the news about child abuse? Those cases that you see are only some of the 3.6 million child abuse cases that get reported each year, but those are only the ones that get reported. 50-70% of child abuse cases don't even get reported. This proves not nearly enough people care or look for signs of children getting abused, which needs to start happening. In 1860 a medical expert researched 32 cases of starvation and/or recurring abuse. 18 of those cases were fatal. One of those cases being the case of Adeline Defert. Adeline was abused brutally by her parents for 9 years. Everyday she was whipped, hung by her thumbs and beaten with a nailed plank, burnt with hot coals, and her wounds would be bathed in nitric acid, and deflorated with a baton. One of four kids experience child abuse. 78% of those kids experience neglect, 18% experience physical abuse, and 9% experience sexual abuse. 25% of those kids are under the age of three.

To an unobservant eye, it might seem like there are many other illnesses and injuries bring about death in the US, but the reality is that gun violence is a major killer. In 6 months more than 21,000 deaths in the US have been caused by gun violence. To top that, there have been more than 300 mass shootings a year. One of these mass shootings happened on Juneteenth in Chicago, where 75 people were shot and 17 people died. "It is the leading cause of death for large segments of our nation," states Daniel Webster, an American health professor and director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy at John Hopkins. And he's right, in 2021, 14.6 out of every 100,000 deaths were caused by guns, the highest since the 1990s. Gun violence "is most definitely a public emergency," says Daniel. Gun deaths have been steadily rising since the mid 2000s, and from the spike in 2021, it doesn't look like they're going to stop.

ReplyDelete50 million animals are killed or are forced to endure painful experiments around the world. animals in captivity in labs mutilate themselves on objects in their habitat. They do this because they are hearing the other animals suffering from the experiments. Animals in labs are experimented on for weeks, months, years, or decades. The animals hearing the other animals suffer typically causes high constants of stress from the animal(s). Animals are typically killed once the experiment is over so this means they don’t get out of the trauma from the experiments. Once an experiment is over their tissues and organs are removed to be examined. The vast majority of experiments on animals are not required by the government so this means some of these tests on animals are illegal. Annually over 115 million animals are used worldwide in experiments this means almost a quarter of billion animals are experimented on.
Have you ever thought about the gender pay gap in sports? Well, you may be surprised. On average in tennis, basketball, soccer, and golf, men are paid a staggering amount more than women. Maya Moore, retired WNBA player had a salary of $117,000. She had a long list of accomplishments including; 4 time WNBA champion, 6 time WNBA all star, scoring champion 2014, 2 Olympic Gold Medals, 2 Team USA World Championships, and she is the only three time winner of the Wade Trophy (top college basketball player). LeBron James has a salary of $47,610,000- he has similar awards, but Maya Moore was paid 2/1000 of what he made. The gender pay gap in sports is embarrassingly large, and Maya Moore is but one example of this inequality.

Pollution Can cause serious short and long term health problems. These health problems can have lasting effects on the human body. Human pollution causes animals to become extinct. This also has an effect on the human population because if animals become extinct, humans will have to change their diet. Pollution is reducing visibility and blocks out the sunlight and it Can cause plants to die and cause crops to decay. Also, acid rain is caused by pollution which hurts plants and decays forests. Animal cruelty needs to be stopped. Animals always support us and make us happy and we hurt them. Animal abuse happens in 88% of families, that's 8,800 families! Mostly household pets and livestock get abused. 62% of animals are euthanized because of bad injuries or bad health. “Dogfighting, cockfighting and other forms of organized animal cruelty go hand in hand with other crimes, and continue in many areas of the United States due to public corruption.” Those are the most common organized cruelty.

Animals have rights just like we do, but different rights than us. animals have been tested all over the world which is alarming to most people especially animal lovers. The most common animal to be tested on is mice and rats, and nearly 200,000 guinea pigs and over 105,000 hamsters were held in labs, with 60% and 54% in experiments causing pain, according to AAVS analysis of data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Each year, more than 110 million animals—including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds—are killed in U.S Abandonment exposes dogs and cats to an uncertain fate, once on the streets they must fend for themselves and may suffer from hunger, thirst, injuries and diseases.
