“You said that to me once before.”
“I said it because it’s true. It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them.”

GM recalled 2017-2022 models of the best-selling bolt. They did this because they realized that the Bolt wasn't reliable nor had fewer problems than gas-powered cars. EVs had double the amount of problems. Coram, a bolt owner had a bolt that wouldn't start in the morning because it was being run by a computer. When he put the car into gear while the batteries were still starting the car wouldn't move and powered down. Jake Fisher, senior director of AT said, “This story is really one of growing pains,” said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. “It’s a story of just working out the bugs and the kinks of new technology.”

Could you imagine doing the same work just to get less pay? “The highest-paid women's basketball player has earned less than the lowest-paid National Basketball Association player.” The top ten highest paid women are tennis players, as of today. But take into perspective that ten years ago; there were a variety of different sports on that list. Including NASCAR, golf, and ice skating. This shows that tennis is trying to take a stand in equal pay but still has so much work to be done. A study showed that an NBA player, Stephen Curry makes $50 million dollars and isn’t even the highest paid player. Whereas WNBA player Jackie Young is the highest paid WNBA player making only $252,450. That's a 200% difference in the amount of pay both players are making. There is so much work that needs to be done with fixing the gender pay gap, but at least some organizations are trying to make a difference.

Have you ever wondered how much plastic is in the ocean? Well in the world's ocean there are billions of pounds of plastic. There are about 15 to 50 trillion pieces of plastic in the world’s ocean. There is so much plastic that almost 700 species get caught in plastic. Biological Diversity said “At current rates plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050.” 2050 is only a couple of decades away from present day. Not even a square mile of the world’s ocean is plastic free. EPA reports said “every bit of plastic ever made is still on earth.” Plastic has been around since the early 19-hundred. That's a lot of plastic that has been manufactured over a century ago to now. Plastic is not good for our environment and the animals in the sea. If we keep on wasting plastic and throwing plastic in the ocean more animals are going to get hurt, stuck and even die. When you are going to throw away plastic, don't throw it on the ground or in the ocean, put it in the recycling bin because when you do that you could be saving a lot of animals' lives.

The air that we breathe; the very thing that keeps us alive, might not be as safe as we think. Air is one of the natural resources we need to survive, yet we pollute it whether we know it or not. Pollution happens every day, every hour, and every minute. This spikes a question, how dangerous, and how bad is it really? Air pollution kills around 5 million people a year, and that number is constantly increasing.

How many times have you heard someone talking about climate change? Earth’s climate has changed over the years, but now because of humans it is getting worse. The warming trend has changed from what it used to be. This is the result of human activities since the mid 1800’s, and the warming trend is proceeding at a rate not seen over millennia. Humans produce atmospheric gases by burning fossil fuels. Those gases have trapped the Sun’s energy in the atmosphere. Some effects of this are, the atmosphere, ocean and land warming up. The Earth's climate responds to changes and we have evidence of this. The ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers are all pieces of evidence. Evidence is also found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and sedimentary rocks. This is all proof that climate change is getting worse because of humans.

Have you ever heard the saying “tax the rich”? Seen on the news how people are constantly becoming homeless or losing jobs or suffering from poverty even though there are tons of wealthy people out there that could easily assist? All because of high taxation? Billionaires in the US are roughly 50% richer now than they were in 2020. Average American taxpayers pay an average federal tax rate of 13% when 400 billionaire families, the ones who have more than enough money to pay taxes, pay only 8.2%. Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeffrey Bezos don’t receive income. No income means no tax. If they receive income, they have to pay taxes (which they are, of course, not willing to pay).

Does 9.1 sound like a big number to you? Probably not. 9.1% of the world's jobs, in reality, is equal to 300 million careers. That’s how many are projected to be taken over by AI in the years to come. Unemployment because of AI is a huge problem, and the loss of a job could mean serious trouble for anyone affected by this. The most unemployed are women and people with very little education. A study from the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report shows that this artificial intelligence takeover could be huge. From the 803 companies that were surveyed, there were about 11.3 million people who had been left without a job. This included 45 large economies and 27 industries within those economies. To add on to this, an article by Forbes states, “How immanent is this takeover? 44% of skill will likely be disrupted over the next five years.” That’s only a five year projection! No jobs are safe, and there’s lots of uncertainty as to what jobs will be taken over by this technology. Some of them include bank tellers, people that deal with analytics or technology, and even lawyers. However, there's still question about what workplaces will look like in the future.

When was the last time that you have felt stressed or anxious? Well, based off of research video games are one of the best ways to deal with stress, and not only that, but video games can help with other things such as hand-eye coordination, and help your brain and thoughts in general. "Games like Minecraft can benefit kids in several ways. Through these brain games they can learn problem solving, strategizing, flexibility, and social skills" said Dr. Sumru Bilge-Johnson, of the Division of Pediatric Psychiatry of Akron's Children. Video games have also been proven to approve attention, communication, and focus, as the kids would get to think and cooperate. "Socially kids learn together, experience together, share ideas and solutions, and communicate how to do things differently." said Dr. Bilge-Johnson.

Does the NFL seem scripted to you? The NFL is always giving us a sense of a little bit of script hidden in their games. Especially when the Kansas City Chiefs play at their stadium. Taylor Swift doesn’t help either, she’s a Chiefs fan and the NFL promotes her because they want money. A scripted NFL would have a rookie quarterback on a mediocre team, leading them to the playoffs. But that’s exactly what happened with C.J. Stroud and the Texans, they got the 4 seed, they won their division. Besides that, a lot of the NFL’s leading quarterbacks all got injured. Daniel Jones, Joe Burrow, Kirk cousins, Deshaun Watson, and Aaron Rodgers. But Aaron Rodgers’s injury was crazy. In the first five minutes of his first game as a Jets quarterback, he got injured then he was out for the season. But there was the Jets backup, who was the fresh start for the Jets. Everyone is out of their minds, this game has to be scripted! Every team had their backup quarterbacks now, and none of it worked out. Not according to Nancy Armour, a columnist for USA Today.. “And a scripted NFL most certainly would have featured a feel-good story of a backup quarterback coming in and playing so well he rescues both his injury-tested team and his own stalled career. Or at least had Zach Wilson doing a serviceable impression of an NFL quarterback.” These NFL conspiracy theories aren’t helping with the situation either, because they actually make sense for once! But everyone can agree on one thing, the Chiefs wouldn’t have been in the Super Bowl without their Referees. I mean these guys are nuts, they make the most wild calls. But when a play doesn’t go the Chiefs way, Patrick Mahomes steps up and unleashes his inner baby. He cries and cries, and forces a challenge for every flag towards the Chiefs. Some people may agree that he complains way to much, whih could be true by the way you look at it. “Calls can often seem to be tilted in a direction that benefits the league’s favored teams,” says Nancy Armour. All though this is all a joke the NFL has never been scripted, and never will be. Right?

Teachers have very limited capabilities when it comes to handling a student’s property. A very highly discussed topic in that field is should teachers be allowed to take a students phone.
ReplyDeleteThe pandemic raised many concerns within the teaching community. One article reads,
“After a year and a half of quarantine, a lot of teachers know that we’ve all been able to get on our phones whenever we wanted and that it was going to be an issue now.”
Students always having the capability to be on their phones during class, was an issue that was going to be very hard to solve. But being present in a building for school is much different than online school. So for as long as teachers will take student’s property, it will just be a battle between students and teachers, a lose-lose situation for both sides.
Did you know that American teachers are not paid enough compared to similarly educated workers? According to the United States Census Bureau “Just over one-half of elementary and middle school teachers and 58% of high school teachers also have a graduate degree. They still earn less ($61,130 and $64,340, respectively) than that of other equally educated workers.” Physical therapists made an average salary of $81,580 compared to the average earnings of elementary and middle school teachers with a bachelor’s degree of $53,800. That is a difference of 27,750! This is not acceptable and something needs to be done to make a change for educators.

Imagine yourself in the middle of the worst nuclear storage disaster in human history; the sky is red with tiny particles that burn wherever they touch your skin. This could almost be you. The staggering amount of nuclear waste that is produced by an average American household running fully on nuclear fuel every year would produce a staggering 30 grams of nuclear waste every year. This is assuming that that power only came from traditional reactors. But, 30g/year could be mitigated by using more fuel efficient reactors that recycle the nuclear waste by using a recycling plant to separate the fission products from the plutonium and the uranium to then be used again in the reactor as fuel once more. Another plus is that the nuclear reactor in tandem with the recycling plant is unlike uranium and plutonium that have a lifespan of 1 000 000 years the fission product has only a lifetime of 300 years !. Not only does the lifespan of nuclear waste reduce to 300 years, the grams per year is 0.3118445g/year! This proves that nuclear waste management needs to be thoroughly revised for the hope of future generations.

ReplyDeleteWe think about a lot of problems in our world. These include climate change, war, poverty, and other very important things that can affect us, but there is one that we don’t pay attention to. This problem is air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, 4.2 million deaths have been reported annually as of 2020 due to air pollution! Air pollution is caused by PM2.5. PM2.5 is a fine particle. According to Nature.com, “PM2.5 comes from a wide range of sources, including energy production, households, industry, transport, waste, agriculture, desert dust and forest fires and particles can travel in the atmosphere for hundreds of kilometers”. Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central and South Asia are strongly exposed to increasing air pollution. In New Delhi, India, all air pollution is caused by factories releasing CO₂ and the burning of fossil fuels. Since air pollution mostly comes from the burning of fossil fuels, a solution could be using electric powered vehicles. They run fully on electricity and burn no fossil fuels. But can we get rid of air pollution completely? Well we can't. Places like the U.K and the United States have found ways to reduce air pollution, but they can't fully get rid of it because people will always be people who are exposed to harmful levels of air pollution. Even if we can't get rid of air pollution completely, we should do our part to keep our world safe.

Have you ever noticed how the U.S.A. is split up between republicans and democrats? Have you noticed how some families argue over politics? I think that it is really messed up, and I think its corrupting our society. It even gets so bad that research shows that we are most likely to not help other people from other political parties. Isnt it so messed up? We also judge people from other peoples political view. Families are also being undermined because of it. You can see it happening at family gatherings, partys, etc. Research also shows that violence is more likely. Just think of January 6th 2021. Political polarization is a humongous problem in the U.S.A. and nobody is doing anything to stop it.

ReplyDeleteThe New York Giants suck. One reason that I know the Giants suck is that in the 2000s the Giants have a losing record. In the last 24 years the Giants have a record of 183-203-1 they have 20 more losses then they did wins. Another reason the Giants suck is that in the last 20 years they have a win percentage of 0.472. Over the last 10 years the Giants have a win percentage of 0.364. This season the Giants lost 11 out of 17 games. The giants scored 266 points this season, but the opposing team scored 407 against the giants. Finally in the last 10 years the Giants have only 1 playoff win. The Giants are one of the only teams in the last ten years to have 1 playoff win.
