  1. The Titanic was a treacherous event which killed over 1,500 people but there are also some valuable lessons that the Titanic brought to light for us. When the Titanic sank on april 15th the lesson started to emerge that we should be prepared for the worst and not expect anything less. The Titanic's first problem was the lifeboats, the fact that they did not have enough lifeboats to provide for everyone on the ship put them in a situation where they were not prepared for when the ship sank. Another major safety factor was the fact that the radio told them about the icebergs but they ignored it and by the time they saw the iceberg it was too late. This applies very much to life today. Take covid for example covid came out and no one was prepared for how bad covid was going to get which led to millions of people's deaths.

The character should talk about how they are scared of the ship sinking and talk about how your character is shaking from the water. Your character could be crying because they are scared and be a regular passenger on the boat.

  2. Iwo Jima is a tiny island in the middle Pacific Ocean. During WWII, a battle took place between the American and Japanese militaries on the island. The Americans thought that Iwo Jima would be a strategic place to capture. The Americans wanted the island because they could launch bombs from there. During a 5-week battle, there were lots of casualties. 7,000 American Marines, and 21,000 Japanese were massacred. From Iwo Jima, we can learn that those going to war need to consider how many casualties may be too many and whether it’s worth it.

  3. The Tri-State Tornado was a tornado that traveled two-hundred and nineteen miles, killed six-hundred ninety-five people, and left over two thousand injured. One of the huge reasons why this tornado reined so freely like a mass murderer on the loose was because of meteorologists. In 1925, the word ‘tornado’ was banned in American forecasts due to concern that people would be terrified. Because of that reason, the giant funnel cloud was unseen in the line of weather for the day, which resulted in over six hundred people dead by the end of that afternoon. Ignorance of small things might lead up to great consequences.

  4. The people of Salem were extremely religious people who taught their children about the devil, witchcraft, and such. Because of this, it isn’t very surprising that when two young girls fell ill, they immediately blamed it on witches and wizards. Overall, 20 people were killed after being accused of witchcraft and many more imprisoned. When people react quickly and irrationally, others get hurt for no reason at all.

  5. One thing that a lot of people don’t understand is that just because something is labeled as “the best” or “indestructible”, doesn’t mean that you should push the capabilities. One example to support this claim is the tragic, sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The Titanic was known as “the unsinkable ship” and was the absolute best of its time. Unfortunately, during the Titanic's voyage from England to New York, the Titanic struck an iceberg late at night and sunk. The reason that the Titanic is a prime example of this claim is that the captain, Edward John Smith overestimated the unsinkability of the ship and ran the ship at a higher speed than advised for that section of water, even while knowing that there were icebergs in that water. The Titanic also left with not enough lifeboats to hold all of the passengers aboard because people thought it was unsinkable. This is only one example of someone overestimating something because it is labeled, “the best”.

  6. The Berlin wall was built on August 16th 1961 by the German Democratic Republic. It was built to split East and West Germany. It was made of barbed wire and concrete. On November 9th in 1989, the citizens of Germany had a major protest( They did not want the wall anymore because five days after 1,000,000 in a half = (500,000 ) people gathered in East Berlin in a mass protest.)The reason for protesting was that they did not want the wall built anymore and they wanted to be reunited with the country. This means they wanted people to be able to travel to other places to see other countries, states, cities, and other people. A good lesson that they learned is that when they are not divided, people can travel more or as long as they want so they do not have to be stuck in Germany.

  7. In 1916 there were 5 shark attacks that happened from July 1 to July 12. In beach haven NJ and Matawan creek a shark, known as the “jersey man-eater”, was killing people left and right. This is very unusual because it’s more likely that you are killed by a car than a shark. This time period marks the beginning of climate change. Sharks regulate their body heat based on the water temperature, so as time went on the water temperature of the ocean had gotten warmer. The main part that hasn’t changed is the water temperature is close to the shore, this is why sharks have started moving closer to the shore. The “jersey man-eater” was identified as a 7 ½ foot long great white shark.

  8. The assassination of Archduke Franz and his wife in 1914 kicked off the first-ever World War. This war was a fight for power and control which even turned the sea into a battleground. Because of this battle, Hiram Maxim built Britain's finest defense, the machine gun. Gavrilo Princip did not care how many families would suffer or how many people would die when he killed Archduke and his wife; all he cared about was overthrowing Austro-Hungarian control. This war teaches us to always think before acting, and we should always consider how our actions may affect others, not just ourselves.

  9. On the night of December 16, 1773, 60 men dressed up as Mohawk indians, got into a boat and dumped €18,000 worth of tea into the Boston Harbour. Why? They were protesting British taxation without representation. The colonists were fed up with the control that the british constantly had over them. Taxations on tea, sugar, and imported goods made them angry. So they decided to protest and take a stand. Their missing 342 chests of tea made the british livid, and it could have been avoided. A lesson we could all apply to today's life is that you cannot take control of others and expect them to stay quiet. If you feel that something is wrong, you should stand up for yourself.

It was a hostage situation between six Arabian men and the SAS (British Special Air Service). the men believed the Arab Authority was being suppressed and so took hostages in the building to use as leverage. the result of this violence left two hostages and five arab men dead. There is a lesson that can be forged from the six days. Violence is and will never be the answer; it harms both sides and the bystanders who had nothing to do with it.

  11. September 11 2001. 2 planes slammed into the Twin Towers based in New York. The Terrorist group Al Qaeda. Planned and directed the attacks towards America. 4 planes would be hijacked and hit their targets. 2 planes hit the Twin Towers. The 3rd was thought to be directed toward many different places but crashed into a field. The fourth crashed into the pentagon. The attacks amounted in a large loss of life. 2,996 were listed as dead. And up to 25,000 injured. A lesson I think can we learn from this is always be ready for the unexpected. Even if its a routine that you’ve gone through everyday. The unexpected can still occur.

  12. The Spanish Influenza pandemic, overshadowed by the first world war, created economic crises and social unrest. Because of the novelty of the deadly, contagious influenza A virus, no medications were able to prevent or dull the effects of contracting the virus, leading to a horrible pandemic: the “purple plague.” The priority of the time was mainly WWI, whether that be sending nearly all doctors out to war, leaving only some to attempt to treat the influx of those infected. A lesson that can be learned from this pandemic is, although other things may be of importance, helping your people takes priority, no matter what.

It was so quiet all the men lay asleep except for a few guards no one expected they were about to be bombarded. This was the battle of the bulge during WWII 1944 december through january 1945. It was the Germans trying to split the allied front in half. It was the spouse to take the Americans by surprise and they did. They went right through the front with 200,000 German troops and 1,000 tanks. It made a bit of a bulge into the amrican line and they were stopped by 101 airborne division. The Soviet Union had hugged the gold since 1964 which ended in 1980. The game took place in Lake Placid, New York. It was a huge downturn for the Soviet Union since they had taken the name of “being the best.” Many peers had doubts regarding the U.S overtaking the Soviet Union since their team had been made up of a bunch of college boys. But, though many had sided with the Soviet Union the U.S coach wasn’t letting the assumptions get to him. He had pushed his team and gave them talks reminding them that though they may be a bunch of college boys they are capable of anything no matter how many others have doubts.

  17. The Mau Mau was a rebellion against the British that began in the 1950s and ended in the 1960s. This rebellion began because of poverty, lack of political representation for Africans, and losing their land to white settlers. Most of the people enrolled in the Mau Mau were Kikuyu. During this time if you were found to support the British even as an African you would be killed immediately. Counter gangs would impersonate the Mau Mau to obtain information. The Mau Mau rebellion ended up hastening Kenya's independence as Kenya gained independence in 1963. President Kenyatta was imprisoned he was thought to be leading the Mau Mau. After gaining independence Kenyans were put in concentration camps and were massacred, In the end, the total death count after the Mau Mau rebellion was 12,090 people killed. The lesson learned from the period is that when we people are suppressed they will rebel, and detail supporting this would be “This rebellion began because of poverty, lack of political representation for Africans, and losing their land to white settlers.”

When the Titanic sank they didn’t have enough lifeboats to save everyone; they weren’t prepared for the humongous boat to sink because they were worried about the look of the boat instead of the what-ifs. The Titanic only had 20 lifeboats which could only save 1,178 out of 2,229 people on the ship. Around 1,500 lives were lost in the sinking because they couldn’t fit all of the passengers on the lifeboats. The architects wanted the ship to look good instead of being worried about the what-ifs. One of the lessons taught from the Taliban rule that had lasted from 1996-2001 is that people should not sit back and wait when bad things start to happen; they should take action. Over the course of a few years, the Taliban took over different parts of Afghanistan, picking them off. The Taliban had taken over Kandahar, a city in Afghanistan, in 1994. The attack on 9/11 did not happen until 2001. The Taliban had been a threat for many years, so we should have acted on them sooner before many lives were lost.

The Great Depression was a harsh worldwide economic lowness between 1929 and 1939 that began after a considerable fall in stock prices in the U.S. The severe economic crisis spread around September 4, 1929, and became known worldwide as Black Tuesday, the stock market crash of October 29,1929. The lesson learned is don't put all your eggs in one basket. You never know when there can be a downturn in the economy. Some things to prepare you are savoring and appreciating things, not going into debt, growing your own foods, canning your own foods and buying things that last.
In conclusion, while you can’t predict economic downturns, you can be prepared.

  22. From Edwina:

There was a time period where the school you went to was decided by the color of your skin. It was known to be “Separate but equal.” In reality, you could tell that was not the truth. Ruby Bridges was a six-year-old girl who was chosen to seek better education by integrating an all-white school. She was excited more than ever to go to William Frante Elementary School, and did not understand why her parents feared her safety. As Ruby and her mother were escorted only a few blocks away from Ruby’s home to her new school she had realized why. Riots of people from all age groups there to protest against Ruby. Protesters held signs with such remarks as, “We don’t want integration.” or screamed such violent slurs; the worst thing Ruby had experienced was seeing a woman hold a baby doll of color in a coffin. Not one remark made changed Ruby's confidence because she walked into her school everyday knowing that her presence was not welcomed. Ruby did not only deal with horrible treatment outside of school, because inside her classroom she was all alone. Ruby’s classmates shunned her completely, and that left her only friend to be her teacher. Ruby ate lunch with her teacher, she played with her teacher at recess, and there were even days the only two people to show up were Ruby and her teacher. They knew they could not miss a day of school because most importantly they needed each other. Ruby continued to show up everyday while the other kids were dropping out of the school, and she continued to walk past the angry riots day after day. Ruby Bridges persevered for her education, but not knowing she was changing history for us children and adults today.

  28. My story takes place in 1620 on the Mayflower and follows an English man named William; trying to persevere through the tough storms, diseases, and threats that might make the Mayflower need to turn around or worse, SINK. It's a story about trying to get to Promised Land.
fun fact #1 The Mayflower carried 102 people, 103 in this story.
The main idea of the story is that things are never what they seem or as easy or hard as you think they might be.
