  1. The 1980 olympic hockey team was a team full of strangers for every single one of them. Their coach always pushed them to their limits. They started to have games and win all of them. I think a lesson that this huge event in history told us is that when you work as hard as you can toward your goals you will get there, but if you don't work at all you will go nowhere.

  2. Around 1944, Soviets took control of parts of Poland, obviously, people began to resist using guerilla warfare. Camps and towns of these 'cursed soldiers' were littered around the country. Communists offered peace and citizenship if they laid down their arms, and naturally, some did. These unlucky folks were taken to kangaroo courts and to gulags, horrifying prisons of terror, and were sometimes killed. Brothers in arms were enraged at the display and liberated many gulags around the country, allowed friends and innocent bystanders to escape. This event is an extreme display of patriotism and what people can do for their country. Poles all over dedicated themselves to their troop and refused to give up all throughout.

  3. September 11th, 2001; One of the darkest and terrible days in history. Almost 3,000 dead and millions of hearts broken. Terrorist group al qaeda sent 19 hijackers to crash four planes. Two out of those four planes hit the world trade center. There were 3,000 people in the world trade center as the planes hit. Many brave people helped and got people out of the towers, but many didn't make it. There was also an estimated 123 billion dollar economic loss and homes being destroyed. The lesson that we learned from this experience is that we need to be extra careful when people's lives are on the line. Thankful, the U.S. learned from this and airport security went up drastically. The surveillance increased and if something like 9/11 happens again the U.S. will be more prepared .

  4. The White Terror was a terrible time in Taiwan's history. During the White Terror, people's rights were restrained, there was no free speech and people were killed at random. What was the point of this massacre? Fear. The Taiwan Government (at the time Chaing Kai-Shek) began a martial law, making it very difficult for people to have rights. Fear was installed into the people. People suddenly disappeared without a trance. The Taiwan Government had complete control over the citizens who feared the government. Now, people still obey when they are scared. Fear is power.

  8. The 2008 Great Recession was a time in the US where the market crashed, forcing employers to fire workers and prices to rise. But, there were a multitude of signs that a market crash was imminent months before it collapsed. For example, the housing market was struggling in 2006, and in December of that year, the Department of Commerce even warned that home permits were dropping by 26% in October. And combined with lowered home costs, people defaulted on subprime mortgages. By August 2007, the Federal Reserve realized that banks couldn't function, but didn't do anything major to help the banks to recover. And only a year later, the US economy crashes, sending millions of people in debt and affecting hundreds of companies. What went wrong? Simple: The government and Federal Reserve recognized the problem in the beginning (subprime mortgage crisis), but didn't do enough to fix it. Never wait to address a problem, as it may become a greater problem in the future that won't be as easy to resolve.

  10. The Mongol Empire was notorious for conquering and defeating other empires in that time period. Led by tyrant Gengis Khan they claimed over six territories of other groups and empires. During the 12th and 13nth centuries, the Mongol Empire was feared by most of Asia. The Mongol Empire eventually fell in 1249 after the death of leader Kublai. The Mongol Empire was taken over by the Ming Dynasty in China. A lesson we can pull from this is karma. If you are greedy or do bad things to other people, it will always come back to you. No money, no food, no employment...who's to blame? The stock market dropped 50% in 10 weeks and no ones owning up to it? Many turned on current president, Herbert Hoover. The Great Depression was the aftermath of overproduction and the Wall Street crash. No one took the time to think about how it started. So called ¨hoovervilles¨ were cardboard shack towns named after the president. Would you like to be blamed for something you didn't do by someone who doesn't even know the story? 13. Lots of people in the disaster of pompeii tried to keep their “treasures” but ultimately they had to leave their treasures here on earth as they passed on. Archaeologists have found a family of four with the father leading the pack trying to get out of pompeii. The father was leading the pack and was carrying all the valuables in his hands and pockets, but when the blast hit him and his family all of his valuables were tossed out and him and his family would never see them again. Archaeologists have found many remains with similar stories of people trying to keep their treasures with them, but in the end all of their lives were taken from them, and their treasures remain here on earth. Historians have also discovered that people soon after pompeii was completely covered, people came back to try to get the treasures left behind by the deceased. They started digging, but were unaware that there was still toxic gas that was just waiting to asphyxiate them. So when their shovels broke through to find a hole filled with the same gas that asphyxiated the people of pompeii, they too faced the same horrific fate of the people they were “stealing” from. Lots of people tried to keep their earthly treasures but in the end lost the one thing that matters: their life.

  14. The first sparks of rebellion actually began long before the Russian Revolution actually took place. Russia was an autocracy where most of the civilians were serfs (AKA. slaves, but most of them were “freed” in 1861 by Tsar Alexander II) The Tsar held absolute power over his people. By the start of the 20th century, Nicholas II was sitting on the Russian throne. The civilians were still extremly suppressed with no actual rights and they were starting to get angry. In 1905, a group of workers had a peaceful march towards the Winter Palace to deliver a petition for better working conditions and more rights, but they were shot down by imperial troops. Strikes and protests broke out and were suppressed. This became known as the 1905 Revolution and it had failed. Unrest continued in the great empire and then WWI broke out. In 1917, another revolution broke out. During the February Revolution, the Menshevik Army forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate the throne and put him on house arrest. In October the Bolshevik Army took the power from the Menshevik army, and set up a new government; today we know that as the Soviet Union. One of the central ideas of the Russian Revolution is power, and it makes us realize that power can only be given, not taken.

  15. From Kaylee:

The great depression was known as one of the worst economic downturns in history. It was caused by the stock market crash of 1929 when people were trying to make money off the stock market. People would buy stock after stock eventually making them more valuable than the company itself, but around November of 1929 the stock market investors couldn't afford to pay off the loans, wiping out most of America's wealth, causing the country 72 billion dollars of debt, and around 17 million people unemployed. No one could find jobs anywhere. But, no matter what was thrown their way people always found a way to provide for their families and loved ones even if it was very difficult showing impeccable resilience.

  16. Martin Luther King Jr was a man of words instead of violence. His house was bombed, he was arrested over 25 times and was stabbed. Martin was scared but he stayed strong. Instead of lashing out, fighting back , and getting revenge on everyone who had hurt him he was decided to fight back with words. These words did more things than violence, He made up with the person who tried to stab him, and later found out she was mentally ill. He also, after hearing on the news about Rosa Parks, helped end the law of segregation. I think this would apply today as instead of the guns, threats, and the things all in between we should focus on all our goals. Peace, without the fighting just words like Martin, and not even just Martin. Gandhi also was part of another civil rights moment and hated violence. Even though they didn’t choose violence they got there points across the world.

One of the crash sites was on Pennsylvania. 44 passengers fought back the hijackers. The Plane was believed target was the White House. One of the planes hit the Pentagon. The Pentagon is the United States Military HQ. And finally, The most known target in New York City, the World Trade Center. The planes hit the Twin Towers solidly. Police and Fire Departments rushed to the scene to help as many people as possible. 296 firemen died and in total, a shocking 2,996 people died on this day. At 9:59 am, the unthinkable happened. The north tower collapsed. Manhattan was covered in smoke and debris. At 10:28 am, the south tower collapsed. The site of the towers, (Ground 0) took until March of 2002 to be cleaned up. They took over the crew, and soon both planes were being flown into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. People inside the towers were rushing to safety. The towers both collapsed leaving a total of about 2,750 people killed, and many more seriously injured. Lots of debris filled the Manhattan streets. Emergency workers hurried to work, struggling to save as many lives as they could. These workers braved the collapsing towers even when they were scared, but they did it because they were true heroes. In 1920, when the distribution and sale of alcohol was prohibited in America and was considered to be "America's National Curse," Al Capone started an illegal bootlegging business, making about $60 million annually. He was also known as how ruthlessly he dealt with rival gangs and people he suspected were plotting against him. He also was behind the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and when he suspected three of his men were planning to kill him, he invited them to a dinner with plenty of liquor, waited until they were done eating, then beat them all nearly to death until his gunmen stepped in and finished the job. Even though he was a huge hit with his alcohol business, he kept his second life hidden from his family, and when innocent bystanders were hurt, he would give them a large sum of money in consolation, and never meant to hurt anyone who was not involved with his schemes. Even though Capone tried hard to make up for his faults, none of that compares to the 200 murders he was responsible for and his early time in Alcatraz and then getting a stroke and pneumonia, killing him. Once he started his business, he couldn't stop selling it. The lesson I took from this was that he started something he couldn't finish, and it led him to Alcatraz. So if the ship started sinking, the compartments would fill with water and then close, and the ship would be saved. the titanic was one of the most comforting, enjoyable ships of its time. But on april 15th, something would happen that would change everyone's lives forever. at 2:20 am, the ship hit an iceberg that was in the water, taking off a side of the hull. Water started flooding the compartments really fast, and the plan to close them didn't work. people were frantic. Women and children were getting into lifeboats, saying goodbye to their husband/father forever. only 706 people out of the 2200 people that were on the ship survived the sinking. The people thought the ship was unsinkable, but were wrong. What people can learn from this is anything can happen, and be prepared for the worst.

  26. September 11, 2001 was a day that forever changed the lives of so many people. It started with blue skies on a perfect fall day. People boarded their American Flight 11 at 7:59am going from Boston to Los Angeles and Flight 175 at 8:14am also heading from Boston to Los Angeles. People went to work at the famous Twin Towers in Manhattan, NY.
35,000 people worked at the Twin Towers, when the first airplane hit the towers there were about 17,000 people at work. Over 3,000 people died from the attacks, but it could have been so many more. The stories of people that missed their train, forgot something at home, or someone asked them not to travel on that day and because of that they are here today to tell their stories of surviving 9/11. Life is precious, we never know when it is our day to leave this earth so live life to the fullest, listen to your gut instict and always remember YOLO!!!!
