  1. he survived because at the end of the book it says he hers an echo saying that hes not dead because when you die you don't hear a lot of stuff.

    1. This not true, when you die you might hear a last thing and it might ring in your ears or echo.

    2. I think it's true, because IN THE MOVIE HE DIDN'T DIE

    3. Movie has plenty of differences from the book, so him not dying in the movie means nothing to the book. After all, the movie is based on the book, not the other way around.

  2. I believe Gabriel and Jonas are still alive because on page 178 and 179, It says Jonas started to loose consciousness. It didn't say he was on the verge of death, anything like that. He could also hear music and thought people were waiting for him and the baby, I don't think he or the baby would die just there and then.

    1. This could have been a hallucination, or it could have happened right before he died, plus he wouldn't have known if he was on the verge of death at his state of mind

    2. Losing consciousness isn't dying, but judging by the fact that he sees his past as his memories come to life, this could be terminal lucidity, where everything becomes very clear just before death. Plus, when you are unconscious, you do not feel things around you, being that Jonas could've very easily died without even noticing.

  3. well at the end of the story you can see he struggles to keep himself conscious and proof that he is alive is the 4th paragraph on pg 178 " he forced his eyes open as they went downward sliding and all at once he could see light.

    1. But what if when he tried to force his eyes open he died then? what if the light was a hallucination?

      Delete
    2. True, but this struggling amount to nothing. He embraced his downward fall and unconsciousness, as in pg 178, "Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him;". It doesn't say he saw the people. He just felt them. On 179, the text reads "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time,". If he had only sled down a hill, how could the behind him be across multiple distances of space and time? The answer, of course, is that Jonas died and is now in purgatory or the afterlife, further confirming that Jonas accepted his fate.

  4. i think jonas and Gabriel survived because on page 179 it says "for the first. time he heard something that he know to be music ." if he was dead he would not her music.

    1. But what if the music was a hallucination and he was either dreaming after he died or actually heard it but then died, the echo is an example, he wouldnt have heard an echo if he was still alive.

    2. Jonas is hearing music, but the music is not necessarily real. The music could be a case of terminal lucidity, where everything becomes very clear seconds before death. The music could be him reexperiencing memories he has obtained, such as him going on a sled, seeing christmas, and the aforementioned music.

  5. I believe that Jonas and Gabriel survived because in the book it explains Jonas and Gabriel sledding down into a place with various lights, families creating memories and people waiting for them, a detail to support this is "Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting, too, for the baby.

    1. As Jonas was sledding, he was "aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him;", but the text avoid saying sensory words like 'seeing' or 'hearing', and instead opts for 'aware'. This is an intentional detail as this place could be his purgatory, and he was all the sudden there.

  6. I think Jonas is alive because he was able to feel himself clutching Gabriel. And it said "He forced his eyes open" and he heard music and could see light. That is why I believe Jonas is alive.

  7. I think Jonas and the Giver survived because even thought Jonas left the community he had bits and pieces of the memory making him warm and keeping him alive."Jonas began to recall happy memories. He remembered his parents and his sister. He remembered his friends, Asher and Fiona. He remembered the Giver. Memories of Joy flooded through him."

    1. Yes, but that quote has nothing to do with keeping Jonas alive. Jonas was happy at the time, but I'm not sure how being joyful while in a do or die situation is going to keep you alive for long.

  8. I believe that Jonas and Gabriel survived. I believe this because when Jonas felt himself losing consciousness he willed himself to stay upright, to keep him and Gabriel safe. Another detail from the book to support my opinion is he could hear and see what was happening down the hill, because he forced his eyes open. In conclusion I believe they survived.

  9. I think that Jonas and Gabe survived because in the end of the book it says "He thought he heard music too, but perhaps it was only an echo. Also the book gives a description of Jonas riding down a sled. The sled may have been a hallucination caused by his memories, and he could still here. He also may have been able to realise that it was and echo, as a result of being able to function.

  10. I think that jonas did survided because he found rooms because they were something shining and they were red, blue, yellow lights that twinkled form the tree in places and because the baby heard something that was music. And I think they found a places to live

    ReplyDelete
  11. In page 178, the bottom paragraph says, '...ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting, too, for the baby. for the first time, he heard... music... singing.' that means he was still aware of his surroundings and could see and hear, they so can the people from Elsewhere. Therefore, this explains why he is alive (and the baby).

  12. JONAS AND GABE SURVIVED...
On page 178, Jonas sees lights, voices, and other things that may describe a holiday. Because he was cold and hungry, I think that his senses were not very clear and that may be why some people suspected they were dying when they read about the lights. Also, just because Jonas is losing consciousness, it doesn't mean he is dying! He was sledding down a hill where he sensed that people were near and he was feeling joy. He just wasn't being very descriptive about what he was seeing and hearing, which might cause confusion about whether he survived or not.

  13. I think that Jonas and Gabriel survived. This is because Jonas said he heard singing and also saw rooms and lights. A quote to support this is " He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights." Another quote is " He heard people singing." This means that Jonas and Gabriel probably survived because the people he heard singing might've helped him.

  14. I believe that Jonas survives, but Gabriel dies. Because Jonas was losing consciousness I think that the baby must have fallen in the snow.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think Jonas and Gabriel survived because,he could hear people singing and thought it was an echo. The line "He heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing" this shows he is alive. But also, the line "But perhaps it was only an echo". This why I think Jonas and Gabriel survived.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They live because on page 179, the book says "for the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing." This shows he was conscious on the way down. He also said they where waiting for him so they probably had medical help ready so his wounds where taken care of.

    ReplyDelete
  17. They lived because on pg. 179 it says he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing." also it says he could see lights" on pg. 178.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that Jonas and Gabriel survived. As Jonas is losing consciousness (stated on the 4th paragraph of page 178), it says that he opened his eyes open, in the 5th paragraph. The book says, "he forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, ad he recognized them now." If he is seeing lights and recognizing them, then he can't be dead.

  19. (I meant to say "forced his eyes open" on the second line of my previous paragraph.)

  20. I think Jonas and Gabriel survived, Jonas has gone through so much with the amount of starvation and cold he has had to withstand. His body and mind are probably very worn out causing him to hallucinate "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness." But also since Jonas made it down this hill, and to 'Elsewhere' he feels estatic and although his body is extremely tired, he is happy causing his hallucinations to make him hear his old community "behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard voices too." but then he also realizes that he's never returning to that place and he will never see it again so he snaps back into reality and you can see this with the ending sentence, "But perhaps it was only an echo."

  21. I think he is alive because there is a second book and not just that he see's rooms with families and light up Christmas trees and I think he is sliding through a new village.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Jonas and Gabriel survived, it says the moment Jonas's body couldn't handle it anymore and was about to shut down he saw the sled it says in the book "His heart surges with hope" and he made it all the way to the sled and clearly states that he heard music as well.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I believe Jonas and Gabriel survived. On page 178 Lowry describes Jonas as losing consciousness, you can't do that when you are dead. He also described how Jonas used his final strength to go down the sled while keeping Gabriel safe.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I believe that Jonas survived because he can summon memories. My proof of that is because when the planes were come with heat seeking rays he summoned cold memory's to hide. So there for it is logical that he summoned the memory of the sled and the memory of the family on christmas and survived.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think Jonas and Gabriel survived because on pages 178 and 179 it says " He settled himself on the sled and hugged Gabe close. The hill was steep but the snow was powdery and soft, and he knew that this time there would be no ice, no fall, no pain. Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope."

  26. I think jonas and gabriel are still alive because jonas heard people singing and voices in the distance. It also said "He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he reconized them now. He kew they were shining through the windows of rooms." which supports that he could still be alive if he heard music and singing and saw colorful lights.

  27. He and gaberiel survived because it said at the end he thought he heard music. Even more proof in the book it said He heard people sing, but if you died you can´t here anything

  28. I think that Jonas and gabriel survived, jonas and gabriel went through something that they have never been through before yet were still able to make it all that way. As it seems they landed in a town meaning someone must have saw them and they would have been extremely worried. In the book it never stated anything about there death and as it seems they are only unconscious. I think they will be rescued by someone in the town unless it was all a dream.

  29. I think jonas and gabriel survived because at the end Jonas saw a house at the end and heard voices, the house would be where him and gabriel would stay.

  30. I know that Jonas and Gabriel are still alive. why would there be more books if Jonas and Gabriel weren't alive? also at the end he knew that he was losing consciousness so he should be alright at the very end the book would have mentioned that he'd pass out. plus at the end it says "but perhaps it was only an echo" if you were dead you wouldn't have the time to think about weather it was an echo nearby.. (well i mean that would suck to die and your last thought be about a echo)

  31. The runners sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as as the sped through in a straight line through an incision -178. Jonas and Gabriel goes through the incision so he can get to elsewhere there are people. He sees light and hears music. He talked about how he recognized the place he was in and described it. That proves his senses are still working so he is alive.

    ReplyDelete
  32. yes he does survive because there is another book with him in it

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Jonas and Gabriel survived because Jonas said he was feeling unconscious and Jonas also said he thought he heard music. So If he was dead then he wouldn't think he heard music.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i think that jonas and gabriel survived because on pg. 179 it states "behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. but perhaps it was just an echo" jonas couldnt make the assumption that it couldve been an echo if he was dead.

    1. In that quote, it mentions "vast distances of space and time". He could have gone universes away just from a bike ride, so he is most likely in heaven now. The music he is hearing is coming from the heaven or purgatory his is in now.

  35. Jonas is alive because he tries to keep Gabriel alive meaning he still has consciousness. On page 177 and 178 it says "He hugged Gabriel and rubbed him briskly, warming him, to keep him alive."

    ReplyDelete
  36. they survived because it said that they heard music and you cant hear if youre dead also it never said that they died.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jonas and Gabe are still alive because In the book it says that "He hugged Gabe and rubbed him briskly, warming him to keep him alive" so that means they could be alive. He isn't gone because if he was he wouldn't be trying to keep Gabe warm.He also in the book forced his eyes open.

  38. "Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting for the baby."" He heard people singing."This shows that there are other people. I think that Jonas is going to a different civilization of people who have escaped the sameness and Jonas's community.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below ,ahead, they were waiting for him and that they were waiting to for the baby. he heard people singing. He also was saying that he recognized as sound he heard before the sound of music.

  40. I believe Jonas and Gabriel survived I believe this because on the very last page 179 it quotes, "he thought he heard music too but perhaps it was only an echo." I chose this as my evidence because I believe that echo or music calling out to Jonas was the giver congratulating him on making it to elsewhere. I also chose that quote because on page 157 the giver says to Jonas, "when I was just a boy, younger than you, it began to come to me it was different. for me it was hearing beyond." So it makes sense that the music could be the giver.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jonas and Gabriel probably survived because on page 178, second to last paragraph, it says that Jonas forced his eyes open while going down in the sled. He also found himself recognizing lights and trees. That proves that his senses were working and sharp enough to see and feel all that, meaning that he probably did not die.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I believe that jonas and gabriel did survive because in the book it states"he forced his eyes open as they went downward, downword, sliding, and all at once he could see lights".when you are dead you cant move your body and you cant see.

    1. Jonas most likely has died just before opening his eyes, as it could be that the light be holy light coming from the afterlife or purgatory.

  43. I believed that Jones survived because on page 179 Jones said "perhaps it was only an echo" and from my understanding when you die you can not hear anything. another reason why I think he is still alive is on page 178 he said "I forced my eyes open" which states that he is still moving which means that he is still alive. my last and the most important information is on page 178 he said "suddenly I was aware of curtly and joy that below" which that states that he was aware of his surrounding which proves that he is still alive.

  44. I believe that jonas and Gabriel survived because when jonas found the slead he could have not been hallucinating because he would have not gone anywhere when he got on the slead, therefore he had to survived. Also He had to surivie because he heared the echo and he said he saw a house so he much have went inside and some one would have helped him

    1. I disagree because in the book it explains how Jonas and Gabriel were getting very weak and soon after on page 178 it says "Using his final strength, ..." this shows that he was dying. As he was dying he started hallucinating which was the sled ride, the people he saw, and the music he heard. "Jonas felt himself loosing consciousness..." proves he was hallucinating. Another piece of information to support that is, when the book states "But the memory faded, leaving him colder than before." this tells me that he is loosing his memory. When he starts to sled down the hill, many memories flood into his head and come back to him like the lights so I can infer that he is hallucinating when he dies.

  45. I believe that Jones did not die becuase on page 178 it says "clutching Gabriel". This is important to note becuase it shows he has control over what he is doing, and it shows is still understanding real things in the real world.
