Be sure to:
- explain why you think Jonas and Gabriel didn’t survive, and
- include details from the book to support your opinion.
I believe Jonas and Gabriel died, i believe this because in the book it says "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness" and i think all the music he heard was just in his head.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so because it said that he forced his eyes open, at the end of the story.
DeleteI think they didn't survive because at the end it sounds like Jonas is hallucinating. He says he sees lights and hears music, which doesn't make sense because they're in the middle of nowhere. Also, it says that somebody is waiting for them and I think that maybe this could be like somebody waiting for them in some sort of afterlife.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good explanation, but I don't think so because I think that the music he hears is Christmas music (and that is why there is snow.) I don't think he was in the middle of nowhere because it said there were people there. And it said at the end that he forced his eyes open, so that probably means that he is semi-conscious.
DeleteI feel Jonas did die because of the part where Jonas heard music -- or echos -- on page 179. I assume it is a death metaphor, and I think this because the last sense to go when you die is hearing. If he felt himself losing consciousness, then began hearing an echo, it could be him dying and his hearing finally leaving him.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so because it said that he forced his eyes open at the end of the story. But you have a good explanation!
DeleteFirst of all, Jonas was probably having hallucinations. He clearly thinks "they" are waiting for him...but how would he know that? Then, there's the line at the end "maybe it was only an echo." Who seriously writes a line like that if they aren't dead? I mean, seriously?!?!
ReplyDeleteIt did say that he forced his eyes open, at the end.
DeleteI think that Jonas and Gabriel died. I think this because it stated, "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled." This supports the fact that he was very weak and definitely would not have the strength to survive that much longer.
ReplyDeleteI think that Jonas and Gabriel didn't survive because "he force his open as they went down the hill, sliding, and all at once he could see lights". When it's said "all at once he could see lights" I knew right away they were dead.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. My evidence from the story of this is " They started down. He felt himself start to loose consciousness. another piece of evidence I have that they didn't survive is that Jonas said all at once he could see the lights so that's when I think he went to heaven or hell.
ReplyDeleteThe resin thay bint serviv bcin the book it sed thay fall down frome the sky when someone falls from the sky thay will posuby not serviv
ReplyDeleteI think that Jonas died because he was in the freezing cold and seemed to be delusional. In the book Jonas says "he thought he heard music from a place he had left" Which doesn't seem possible because by a place he left he had left is the community which I don't think he could hear. And he has never even heard music before.
ReplyDeleteJonas and Gabriel did not survive. I think this because towards the very end of the book Jonas describes feeling weak and hungry with barely any strength to keep moving. But then on page 178 the text says "The wind was bitterly cold. The snow swirled, blurring his vision. But somewhere ahead, through the blinding storm, he knew there was warmth and light". He then goes on to see a sled lying on top of a hill and christmas lights. Which I assume is a hallucination because he was in the middle of nowhere and they were coming from his memories. This is why I thing Jonas and Gabriel died.
ReplyDeleteJones and gabriel are dying. One Jones said perhaps it is just an echo. Two this is memory that jones had.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonas and Gabriel died because when they are sledding down the hill they experience certainty and joy. The narrator explains that as they are sledding Jonas sees a house and lights on a tree with people are singing. If we go back to the definition of a hallucination it's images or sounds made up by the brain in reaction. So what Jonas is seeing seems like the memory of Christmas that the Giver had given to him also the memory of sledding. Therefore Jonas could be hallucinating because of how the narrator describes it seems like a mix of memories that the giver had given him which could be his mind creating images and noises from his memories.
ReplyDeleteI think Gabe and Jonas die because Jonas said he "thought" he heard music, this is a sign that he is hallucinating. Another thing is that he thought he heard music, and an echo, that could be him losing hearing and consciousness. He said he saw lights but I think the snow and the lights were a hallucination for the sole fact that it cant be warm and dry one moment and snowy and cold the next.
ReplyDeleteI think that jonas and gabriel did infct die because on page 178 it states that he was losing consciousness and he may have been hearing the music and echo in his head
ReplyDeleteBut it said that he forced his eyes open and he saw lights, so that means his eyes are working. Therefore, I think that he is alive.
DeleteI believe Jonas and Gabriel died. This is because in the book it says "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness" which means he is starting to get delusional. That's why he was intimating the sled being there and the people singing.
ReplyDeletedead at the end of the book he's outside now how do you see lights and hear music in the middle of nowhere and plus he found a sled untouched outside in THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas didn't survive because the book quoted that "Jonas felt himself losing concsiousness and with his whole being willed on to the sled to stay upright on top of the sled. He was also freezing and starving in the book so when he had the imagination of him sleading I think he was just hallusinating.
ReplyDeletejonas died because in the book it said he was losing consciousness which was meaning he was closer to death
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonas and Gabriel died because Jonas finds a sled in the middle of nowhere and slides down a hill. He hears music and sees lights in the middle of nowhere. So he had to be dying and part of dying is hallucinating.
ReplyDeletei dont think they survived because on page 178 they are going down the hill on a sled and Jonas had felt himself loosing consciousness and struggling to stay upright. After going down the hill he started to see a house with lights. After being in the cold for so long and also loosing consciousness it sounds like hallucination. He is seeing the memories the giver had given him which is his hallucinations taking over his mind and slowly killing him.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas and Gabriel died because on page 178 it says he felt himself losing consciousness. I think he thought he saw lights and heard music, but that was all just in his imagination. He struggled staying upright on the sled, so that means he was not strong enough to ride the sled.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonas and Gabriel didn't survive because the book claimed that Jonas felt himself losing consciousness. The book also states that Jonas heard music or an echo but he could have been hallucinating. If Jonas died than Gabriel couldn't have survived in the freezing cold for that long. Therefore Jonas and Gabriel did not survive.
ReplyDeleteJonas died because in the book it said he was losing consciousness which he could probably be inching to death
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that Gabriel and Jonas died, because Jonas felt as though he was in a familiar place. With music, and lights. He described with an unquestionably weak voice, that he was getting weaker, and was losing strength. When he was struggling to climb the mountain with Gabriel, he was cold, and extremely tired. Suddenly happy memories flowed through him, and began to recall joyful times. He felt as though his destination was waiting for him down below.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonas and Gabriel died, because it is as if Lois Lowry foreshadows as if they died. For example she uses phrases such as final destination, or final strength. Is it also possibly that Jonas attentionally died, because of the environment he was in was rough, and felt as if he didn't want to go through anymore of it. But at the same time this could not be the case since he wants to do anything for Gabriel.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that Jonas and Gabriel did not survive because of the weather conditions they were in. It was snowing and was very cold. On Pg 178 at the top of the page it says "The wind was bitterly cold"and that evidence alone proves that they did not survive. Also if you go that long without eating you could also die. He was experiencing hallucinations which is why he thought he heard voices but it was because of starvation.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Jonas survived his crusade to Elsewhere because of the cold and his lack of food. In the book towards the end Jonas starts to talk about the cold that he was experiencing such as on page 178 "The wind was bitterly cold. the snow swirled, blurring his vision". On pages 171 and 172 Jonas realizes how hard it is to find food in the wilderness "Now that they had left the cultivated fields behind them, It was almost impossible to find food. These to threats combined together to cause Jonas to start seeing and hearing things at the end of the book. 178 "Red, Yellow, and Blue lights that twinkled from trees" and on 179 "He heard people singing". Usually people don't find people in the middle of a blizzard. So I think that Jonas most likely froze to death from the cold and if not starved.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas died because it said he was losing consciousness and was hearing echoes which does not occur in open space. Which means he was moved to a closed room (heaven or hell).
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Jonas & Gabriel survived. The reason I don't think they survived is because on Page #178 the narrator used these quotes:
ReplyDelete"Using his final strength"
"Jonas felt himself using consciousness"
and "Inside his freezing body. That implies to me that these are his last moments alive and he is dying. That's why I don't think that Jonas and Gabriel survived.
i think he is dead because on the end of page 178 it says " Downward, Down, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting to."
ReplyDeleteI do not think that Jonas and Gabriel survived because on page 178, the book says, "Jonas felt himself lose consciousness" and also, "He forced his eyes open as they went downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognize him now." This shows that Jonas might be hallucinating the lights.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe they, Gabriel and Jonas survived because we watched the video about hallucinating and it had said the man was not eating, starvation can lead to hallucination witch makes me think, Well that fits right into our topic of Jonas and Gabe out on their wild adventure. Visual hallucinations consist of seeing things that may not really be present.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas and gabe Died because when they Reached Elsewhere, Because they had lacked food and water. it said in the book "Jonas Had started losing Consciouness" So when he heard the Music or "The echo" It Was he probaly Reached elsewhere. but died in the process and They people and lights they were just his imagination

DeleteI think Jonas died because in the book it says "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled"he was losing consciousness so I think when he got to the bottom of where he was sledding down he gave out and passed away. It also says "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." He thought he was hearing something but it probably was him slowly dying from the coldness. When he got to the bottom of where he was, he blanked out.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Jonas survived because in the end he said "using his final strength" "He felt himself losing consciousness" and "He heard people singing Behind him, across vast distances of space and time from the place he had left. That makes me believe that Jonas died.
ReplyDeletei 100% believe that jonas and gabriel both died from hunger and the blizzard. realistically a baby wouldn't survive a blizzard, jonas had left the cultivated fields and its hard to get food in the wilderness especially when you have a baby with you. jonas lost all his strength because he was starving. on page 175 "there was no response from the child who had once been so curious and alert" gabe was the first to die from hunger and then jonas followed
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the very last sentence of the book it will say "But perhaps, it was only an echo". Also Jonas might be hallucinating
ReplyDeletefrom the cold and breathlessness (he was on top of a mountain) because the house at the end and the music was identical to the memory that the Giver had given him. Jonas and Gabriel would die from their hunger and hypothermia.
I think Jonas didn't survive because the book says Jonas felt himself losing concsiousness and with his whole being willed on to the sled to stay upright on top of the sled.
ReplyDeleteJonas is dead because at the end of the book it said:He heard people singing in the distance and Gabe heard it too. But it was an echo and that means he might be going to hevan.
ReplyDeleteI think that Jonas and Gabriel died because in the book it says "Jonas felt himself loosing consciousness. And maybe the singing was angels in the afterlife or something. And if jonas was suffering and losing consciousness then Gabriel would probably be dead.
ReplyDeletei think Jonas and Gabriel did not survive because it says that “ an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, The Elsewhere. That held their future and past.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas and Gabe didn't survive because in the book it says, "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness" This showed me that he was dying because it was like he was starting to imagine all the things that he expected from the memories he still had left. Also, Jonas and Gabe were suffering and all of a sudden there was lots off happiness, so I can infer that he died.
ReplyDeleteThe environment would be a major factor; they are freezing and starving, which is something you could die from. Also when sledding down the hill, he somehow knows that there would be "no ice, no fall, no pain.", this means that he's probably hallucinating or going insane.
ReplyDeletei think that they didn't survive and Jonas was just hallucinating, at the end of the book he said he "saw lights and recognize them now. He knew they were shining in red, blue and yellow twinkled in the trees that kept memories and celebrated love" but in another part of the book it said he was loosing consciousness, how could he have seen the lights then? that's why i believe they are dead☠
ReplyDeleteOn page 178, the book quotes "The Elsewhere that held their future and their past." Their future means that Elsewhere is where they are heading right now. And their past means that their past choices determine whether or not they go to Elsewhere, or if they stay alive for the time being. And Elsewhere is obviously heaven and they music is the angels singing in heaven so
ReplyDeleteJonas has died, 100%. The book references a "Elsewhere that held their future and their past," and Jonas losing consciousness. From then on, Jonas starting sensing memories he had in the past. Families celebrating Christmas, sledding, and music. This could definitely be Jonas dying, and recalling his past. The Elsewhere they mention could also be figure for heaven, where his past will be remembered an where he will reside.
ReplyDeleteif you look at the end it says "for the first time, he heard something that he know to be music. He heard people singing." when you hear Sounds like music it is believed to be heard when your dying, i think he is dying because it is impossible to live in those conditions. the amount of time in the snow would be way longer then the time you would die from frostbite. And he had frostbite i think that because his symptoms.
ReplyDeleteSymptoms-
At first, cold skin and a prickling feeling.
Numbness.
Skin that looks red, white, bluish-white, grayish-yellow, purplish, brown or ashen, depending on the severity of the condition and usual skin color.
Hard or waxy-looking skin.
Clumsiness due to joint and muscle stiffness.
-------
And he had had most of symptoms listed.
the book clearly states that he is losing consciousness, and before the sled part the book talks about what bad a shape he's in, so it makes little sense that he would actually know what he was seeing. He also hasn't seen the lights before except in a memory, so he has not seen lights in real life.
ReplyDeleteI believe jonas definitely died because jonas felt like he was using his final strength, and special knowledge that was deep inside him and found a sled on the top of the hill. He was hallucinating because a sled doesn't just appear on a hill
ReplyDeletein the book it says he heard people singing behind, across vast distances of space and time from the place he had left, he thought hd heard music too. but perhaps it was only an echo. So he probably hallucinated the music and sound but died so he only heard it in his mind before he died
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonus did not because at the end he was hallucinating and there was no sled.
ReplyDeletefor him
ReplyDeleteI disagree. As Jonas was losing consciousness (stated on the 4th paragraph of page 178), it says that he opened his eyes, in the 5th paragraph. The book says, "he forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, ad he recognized them now." If he is seeing lights and recognizing them, then he can't be dead. Also, I don't think that he was hallucinating, because at the end, it said the people were waiting for Jonas and Gabriel, so maybe they somehow knew to prepare a sled for them.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonas is dying as the book ends. He is dying because, it on page 178 it said: "And all at once he could see lights and he recognized them now." Maybe that is showing that he is seeing the lights of something beyond the living world. If he recognized them, he might have known that he was going to "Elsewhere." Also on page 179 it says: "Behind him across vast distances of space and time..." That could have meant he is sort of going to a new place. Or leaving the living world behind him. It also sort of makes you feel like he is looking back on his world from another place.
