Does four hours a day on a cell phone sound like a lot to you? Social media companies attempt to keep us online and exposed to the real customers of “free” social media: advertisers. “I feel tremendous guilt,” said Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.” Because we seek rewards, the platforms we engage in offer what is called intermittent reinforcements, the constant chance to be rewarded with something regardless of whether it actually happens; this is the goal of the ‘pull-to-refresh’ feature on social media. Modeled right from the same technique Youtube and Netflix use to keep viewers watching after a selection has ended, bottomless feeds eliminate stopping cues, keeping us on for longer. Social media companies even buy information about us based on anything we do online from companies like Experian, data collectors looking to profit despite any harm that could be caused.

A study shows that in 2025 over half the population will live without clean drinking water. Mark Rober - "I am so bummed that over 1 billion people live without clean drinking water." Almost all rivers in Asia are polluted and over half the global population does not have a safe sanitation process. Right now about 80% of waste water goes into the Ecosystem. What we can do to prevent water pollution? you can start to put garbage in garbage and recycling in recycling, stop littering, reduce the non reusable plastic and throw fertilizer back into grass.

In less than 40 years, the frequency of obesity in America has grown by 50%, and with that, more deaths. In fact, 1 out of every 10 American deaths have some connecton with obesity. Effects from Obesity include: Diabetes, Heart Disease, and in some cases, cancer. According to a 2011 combined study of 8 studies, we have come to a conclusion that 1 hour of TV every day comes to a 10% increase risk of diabetes. There are similar numbers to increases in both Heart Disease and death aswell. Some Americans will spend well over an hour sitting in front of a screen, so this news can be very shocking. In the past 30 years, the annualized average calorie intake has increased by 28 calories per day. One of the main reasons why people in America are getting obese, is their daily habits and routines that they can't seem to break out of. With these numbers, we can easily figure out the devastating consequences these habits can bring, and reveal the true problem of obesity.

Obesity is a problem. Many kids and teens in the US are overweight or even obese. According to a study at Duke University, more than forty percent of teens from sixteen to ninteen years old are obese. Not only teens but also kids. twenty-six percent of kids being two to five years old are overweight and fifteen percent are obese. Obesity also has many bad outcomes. It can cause heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Asian hate crimes spiked rapidly during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many asian Americans were called racial slurs by other strangers in the street, others were beaten and few were killed. Former president Donald Trump has many times called covid the ¨China Virus¨ or ¨Kung Flu¨ when he has been in office. Many of the victims of these assaults say that they would be called ¨disgusting¨. Helen Oh, an Asian American women was walking downtown 16th street pedestrian mall in April when two white men approached her and called her ¨infected and disgusting¨ like many others. she said that she ducked into a drugstore and didn't think to say anything back, after she had walked out of the drugstore, and elderly couple crossed the street to be far from her she stated that it was obnoxious

Did you know 55% of all professional athletes are born in the first quarter of the year? This is the relative age effect (RAE). What this means is when your on a soccer team with 9 and 10 year olds, the oldest kid could be 10% older than the youngest. This is why rugby teams in New Zealand have started basing their teams off of weight and height, not age. But, it's not all bad for third and fourth quarter kids, because if they do make it to the professional level they are more likely to be the most successful, in fact, 55% of all Super-Athletes, or legends are born in November and December. For example, Harry Kane was cut from his dream club Arsenal at age nine for being to slow and chubby, because more kids had matured faster than him. Now, he's scored over 200 goals and has a net-worth of over 100 million Euros. The same is true for soccer legends Pele, Maradona, Messi, and Mbappe.

Do you know how many people go without meals everyday? There is about 2 million people in New York who can't afford meals. Sometimes parents skip meals so their kids can have something to eat, but their kids sometimes are still hungry. Many people have tried to contact Governor Cuomo to help these people. One of them said "Prior to the pandemic, over 1.2 million New Yorkers were food insecure. Current estimates are over 2 million New Yorkers are now food insecure." Covid has made many other families go without food. Children that don't have food rates are going much higher. About 11% of people are getting some free meals but not alot of them. There are lots of people who are going on with less meals everyday.

The CEO of the privacy firm Priveri said, "There are a lot more people tracking you than you think,” Jackson said. “The data world is a very powerful and lucrative marketplace with a lot of players involved." Even so you might think that only criminals would steal your data but even the FBI can read through suspect's emails. You should be very carful online as when your online you may think you are anonymous, so then you do would things that you would never do in the real world. We all know about pollution right? But do we all know about the harm it causes? Beautiful landscapes piled up with trash, and the sea has so much trash that it washes up onto beaches. The animals are drowning, their homes dying and their food getting poisoned. The plant life is getting killed, making the air denser with carbon dioxide, and taking away the oxygen we all need. Pollution is also the biggest cause of the global warming and climate change that will one day kill us all. The air pollution already has a massive impact on your health causing people anything from itchy eyes to death. You may think that if your indoors you will be saved from the terrible air pollution -- you're wrong. When you cook the gases that it makes is also bad for your body, it's able to cause you lung cancer. Even if you don't breath in the gas, it can still absorb into your body just by going through your skin. Pollution effects every living thing on earth whether you like it or not, and if we don't stop it now, we WILL all die.

In 2012, 9 years ago, laws concerning our school lunches were changed. Our ice cream bars and chocolate chip cookies were replaced with celery sticks and yogurt cups. This set of regulations were meant to halt the rapidly rising child obesity rates. The idea was good, and in practice it partially succeeded, but there were some big issues. The food now costed more and was less appetizing. Around 1.2 million kids dropped out of the National School Lunch Program. A number of schools, not wanting to put more financial pressure on struggling parents, also dropped out of the program. There is a study where certain schools would adopt more vegetable packed lunch courses. It was found that kids were 30% more likely to pick a vegetable for lunch than kids from a normal school.

Reading it's quite important. For some people it is relaxing and for others it is miserable. Reading can do many things such as relaxing the mind, destressing, and can help with anxiety. Reading can also improve in vocabulary. It helps you talk more fluently and find new words. For example you can be reading and word pops up and you don't know what it is, later you find yourself using it in an email, letter, or even talking. Sometimes reading can help you find insparations, help you find creativity, and also expands the mind.

COVID is affecting many people including those on the streets. an estimated half a million people are without a home due to COVID alone. This is ontop of the 564,000 people already on the streets, this totaling and estimated 814,000 people in the US. In 2019 there where enough homeless shelters for one in every two people. I did some calculations and if there are no more beds added or no new shelters about one in every three people have beds to sleep in. But the communities who are being hit the worst with homeless rates due to COVID are the black and latinx communities. 55 out of every 10,000 black people are homeless 22 out of every 10,000 latinos are homeless. During these times those communities need the most help and most of them aren't getting it.

Does three hours a day sound like a good amount of time on homework? "Research conducted by Stanford University found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from society." Also over 70% of students in elementary to middle school report that they are often or always stressed over homework. Many students felt forced to do homework rather than spending time with friends or family and just having fun. Also, parents and students have reported that the no homework policy has taken the stress out of their homes. “ The National Education Association supports a standard of 10 minutes of homework per grade level." A study shows that elementary students get three times the amount of homework that they are supposed to get. Also researchers saw that first graders were receiving on average 30 minutes per night.

Have you ever been to a zoo or aquarium? Going to a zoo seems like an innocent activity. Most people that go to zoo’s go for their fondness of animals. Going to a zoo may seem like a delightful, light-hearted experience when you see a chimp riding a scooter or a dolphin breakdancing, but do really think that animal is having fun? Everyday performing unnatural behaviors, hurting themselves so that somebody can smile, and then walk away and forget about the whole experience. 75% of zoos go against the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums also known as WAZA, and do interactive displays where the animal is doing an unnatural behavior. Ben Williamson, who is the World Animal Protection's campaign manager, also know as WAP said “We are asking WAZA to take responsibility for the activities of both its direct members and all other venues to which it is linked, WAZA is not enforcing its own rules and zoos are falling seriously short of their commitments to animal welfare.” Clearly they are not enforcing their rules because 43% of zoos go against guidelines and have petting experiences. 23% have direct feeding or feeding the animal right from your hand. There are beluga whales reenacting movie scenes and dophins forced to beach themselves so that they can be used as a photographers prop. Dophins beaching themselves can crush there internal organs due to land pressure. Williamson also said “The added pressure from a commercial perspective likely means that the animals will be pushed to perform even when they are not willing. Considering some venues expect animals to perform several times a day, every day, performing can become a considerable source of stress for them and this can cause injuries, illness, and death.”. So tired, enclosed by walls, people staring, pressing there face on the glass. Another day stuck in a small room, doing show after show. “It is troubling that in 2019 we still have venues such as SeaWorld San Antonio inflicting this level of suffering on wild animals and calling it entertainment,” said WAP Executive Director, Alesia Soltanpanah. “Seeing wild animals perform in shows as photo props is unnatural and leads to a lifetime of suffering.” Do you really think people should keep going to zoos just to see a dolphin beach its self, or a lion stuck in a small enclosure?

There are so many people who are hungry right now. In the World about fifty million people who are food insecure and 12.5 million kids who are probably close to your age who are food insecure. What is food insecurity? It is when people can not get enough food or little to no food because of how little money they have. Food insecurity also can cause people to become obese, get heart diease and diabetes including Kids;kids can also get anemia, asthma and anxiety. There are about 60,000 food banks and pantries and meal programs, and they are serving about 40 million people. Some people in differnt communitys are growing there own food because they cannot afford it. In Maben,Missisipi volunteers are clearing the field and others are planting the seeds, and they have been growing tomatoes, purple hull peas, okra and watermelons. The gardeners gave the first of the food to the elderly people or people who have gave away their homegrown food from there gardens. What is SNAP? SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and they support low income americans get food to eat. In the U.S.A there are about 9.5 million families on SNAP. It is the largest program in America working to fight hunger. So what should we do? We should start donate food even if it is a little bit it could help a family in need

1 billion people live under the World Bank poverty line of The U.S at $1.90 a day. This amount of money is barely enough to buy water. Mothers and fathers and children all have to starve. These people go without food or water because of the power hungry dictators. Those people keep all the money that could be used to help the country all for themselves. These dictators don't care for any of the townspeople and, instead only care about the wealth that comes with the position. The top 3 poorest are Burundi, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Also with European colonialism governing these countries are made very difficult. Another fact is that Europe is drawing border lines without the consideration of these poorer countries. The bad side of this is that certain people are being forced to live with one another. This causes huge conflicts between townspeople and other nations. One of the last things that dents the progress of transforming the countries from poor to rich; is that other countries are fighting in those areas causing lots of damage to buildings and other infrastructure. One way to begin transforming these countries is to stop the fighting between other nations. Second is to find a leader that cares about his country and his/her people. Third is to get food and water to these countries. Fourth is to stop the fighting between the townspeople. Those are some things that need to be fixed to turn those messes of nations to nice and organized nations.

Did you know that 27.5% of high schoolers vape in the U.S? Vaping can harm your brain development, can give you heart and lung disease, and severe lung injury. People from the age of 15 - 17 are 16 times more likely to vape than people from 25 - 34. Most people vape out of curosity, and one out of three vapers vape daily. From 2017 to 2019, vaping rates have doubled! From 2013 to 2017, nearly 5,000 children under the age of five have been sent to the hospital because of exposure to liquid nicotine. If vaping companies didn't make billions each year, they would stop making vaping products.

Do you hate school? Do you hate the pressure and anxiety school gives you? Well here are some reasons why you shouldn't go to school. School can humiliate you for example, say you get an answer wrong in front of your entire class, it's the worst feeling in the world. You feel ashamed and embarrassed as your classmates laugh at you.
ReplyDeleteSchool lunches are the worst, there unhealthy and gross and no kid wants to eat it, but it's the only thing to eat unless they bring their own lunch. The foods at school contain a lot of fat which could cause obesity. Studies have shown that if a kids close friend is obese then they could become obese as well.
More and more kids are finding out about drugs from school everyday, most kids know that they can get illegal drugs from contacting the right person which is a big deal because they can get addicted. Some kids start using drugs because of the stress and pressure of school so they can get there mind off of it, which can cause an addiction. If a child is different then the others mentally they would be sent to a doctor for their mental state and would be given mind-altering drugs which are also addictive.
The students in school are receiving imformation that is useless for when there older and when they learn this information they end up forgetting it since they learned it only once, but in math they use adding subtracting etc. all the time so they wouldn't forget it. Most of the tests that are given students are useless if they are multiple choice because the student has a 50/50 chance of getting the question right. And that is why there shouldn't be school.

Did you know that 10% of students don't end up up going to college because of the exaggerated fees? In the article "Should college be free?" stated that free college has become a major policy for Democrats. It's important to try and make a change in yearly tuition fees because some people don't have tens of thousands of dollars to pay off the bills. During Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020, he put forward a plan for free college for community college and any other 4 year college for families who make less than 125,000 dollars per year. Berea college in Kentucky is already helping out students by having no yearly fees. The article also said that higher degrees can give you extra benefits in life when you're not having to pay yearly tuitions. The extra benefits will probably include less anxiety and stress. Over all we are not completely there yet, but I'm glad that there are people and some schools out there who are trying to make it easier for college students and their families.
ReplyDeleteI love going swimming in the summer. It's a great way to cool off from the scorching sun. But in Africa, that's not possible. 1/3 of Africa lacks water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. Swimming is out of the question. But why can't they just go online and order some out of country water from an American grocery store and have it shipped to their house? Wouldn't that solve all their problems? I don't know if you can do that, but if it was possible in America, it's just a dream in Africa. The entire continent of Africa only uses 3% of the world's electricity. Not 3% of a state, or a small country. That one single continent uses only 3% of the entire world's energy! And buying any kind of technology- phones, TV's, laptops- would take a year to afford an old, cheap phone. 1.2 billion people only make $1.25 per day. And the world population id 7.9 billion people. So 1/7 of the entire world makes only enough to buy a small glass of water per day. In fact, the next time you need to go to a grocery store, try spending ONLY $1.25. I could probably buy one apple. Because of that small amount of money to spend on food, that raises another problem; 3 million children die for malnutrition each year. Malnutrition means that you lack food, or nutrition. so that means that 3 million children per year die because they don't have enough to eat or drink. And the sad thing is that less than 1% of the American budget goes to fighting poverty. Does that seem like a lot?

Americans have and will continue becoming more obese by the year if we don't change our habits. A study by the U.S.D.A. concluded that the caloric intake for the average American in a year since 1983 increased by 20%. One contributor of that is our increase in meat consumption. The average American consumes 195 pounds of meat in one year. The average was only 138 pounds in the 1950s. Not to mention the grain consumption increased by 45% since 1970. I think you're starting to see a pattern here. You also might want to keep away from the sugar. Sugar affects the metabolism and is one of the main contributors to major weight gain, and also diabetes. But calories aren't the only reason America's obesity levels are skyrocketing. Americans just aren't producing the physical activity that they used to. Since desk jobs are becoming extremely common today, the amount jobs that require physical activity since 1960 tumbled from 50% to 20%, which might be part of the reason the average amount of calories burned in a day dropped by over 100 calories. Not to mention that cars are also why Americans aren't getting enough exercise. Americans prefer to use automobiles as transportation, rather than walking. Because of this, 80% of Americans to not reach the recommended amount of exercise they should be getting. Americans need to turn their lives around.

America, land of the obese, home of the brave. On a list of 141 countries, the U.S.A. placed 12th...In what? Not gun ownership, not freedom, obesity. 36.2% of Americans are obese. Ridiculous isn't it? Obesity in America is caused by more than excessive eating and inactiveness. Beauty standards, foreign and domestic, soceioeconomics, and culture play a large role in the obesity epidemic in America. African Americans have the largest obesity rate when compared to other racial/ethnic groups. African Americans also have the highest poverty compared to other racial /ethnic groups. 49.6% of African American adults are obese, and 18.8% of African American adults live in poverty. The ratio of the African American obesity rate, and the African American poverty rate comes out to be 4:2. With this in mind, African Americans make up a large percentage of poor neighborhoods in low income neighborhoods. Cheap sugary drinks are advertised largely in poor areas as well. These poor areas are known as food deserts: areas of poverty where healthy food is uncommon and often unaffordable. Latino and hispanic Americans also make up a percentage of low income neighborhoods, alongside African Americans. In correlation, Latino/Hispanic Americans have an obesity rate of 44.8%, and a poverty rate of 15.8%. Very close to that of African Americans. Segregation and other socioeconomic differences have caused the large African American And Latino American poverty rates. In conclusion, obesity has been targeted against poor areas, and people.

The only symptom isn't sadness, people with depression can suffer from headaches, backaches, stomach aches, and/or joint pain. Eating disorders can also be a sign of depression or symptom. We need to check on friends and support them especially through rough times like Covid 19.
