Does four hours a day on a cell phone sound like a lot to you? Social media companies attempt to keep us online and exposed to the real customers of “free” social media: advertisers. “I feel tremendous guilt,” said Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.” Because we seek rewards, the platforms we engage in offer what is called intermittent reinforcements, the constant chance to be rewarded with something regardless of whether it actually happens; this is the goal of the ‘pull-to-refresh’ feature on social media. Modeled right from the same technique Youtube and Netflix use to keep viewers watching after a selection has ended, bottomless feeds eliminate stopping cues, keeping us on for longer. Social media companies even buy information about us based on anything we do online from companies like Experian, data collectors looking to profit despite any harm that could be caused.

Our world has been getting warmer and warmer, mostly because of humans. We burn more fossil fuels and destroy forests to make agriculture, which develops carbon dioxide, which makes the earth warmer. Other causes to climate change are volcanic activity, solar output, and Earth´s orbit around the sun. One thing that prevents climate change are negative forces, which are substances that keep the earth cooler.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it would be fair to have someone in the position you want and deserve, when the only reason you're not is because of your gender? Well studies show that when a man and a woman are both in a position to get promoted, only 15% of women will actually win that position. Less than 30% of women are in congress because people believe that women aren't tough enough to deal with politics. Studies show that women often apply for jobs that give a lower paying salary because they are taught that they won't get a higher job, and will be given what they deserve, which isn't a lot.

Does two and a half million crimes sound like a lot to you? If so, then you'll be glad to hear that's the amount of crimes that firearms save yearly. That is millions of lives saved from guns. You may dislike guns as much as you want but facts don't lie. Studies have shown 60 percent of felons stated that they kept clear of homes with guns. There are 498,000 incidents recorded when intruders were scared away. That's a big number just having a gun could save you and your family from intruders. Extensive research has shown guns prevent thousands of crimes daily. You might think guns also cause crimes. You are correct and I myself think it shouldn't be as easy as it is to purchase a fire arm. According to statistics though less than one percent of guns cause crimes.

Global warming is known everywhere, but you almost never hear people talking about it even though scientists are referring to it as "The biggest global health threat of the 21st century". In just 2015, ten weather and climate disasters have cost us 1 billion dollars. You might assume that's normal if you didn't know that ranging from 1980-2015 the average cost was 5.2 billion from disasters. Global warming is also affecting animals too. Toxic oceans are causing animals to go extinct much faster than they are supposed to. For example animals with backbones are going extinct 114 times faster than their supposed to be. The only reason that is happening is because of us. We can't fix everything that global warming has caused us, but we can lessen some of the damage the future will take.
ReplyDeleteDo you feel that children get too much homework? Well that's because they do. Children are only supposed to get 10 minutes of homework per grade. Kindergartners are getting 25 minutes of homework each night but NEA and NPTA say that they should get none. Second graders receive 28 to 29 minutes of homework each night as well. When a test was created over 70% of the children said that they are always or often stressed about homework. Even parents opt out of doing homework all together and when asked about it they said it makes their and their kids evenings more enjoyable. Research shows that when children receive too much homework it causes health problems. When children spend too much time on homework it stops them from developing critical life skills. Most kids feel they are forced to doing homework over gaining talents.

Have you ever wondered how much people are on social media and how long people use it? Well today you are about to find out. People who have researched how many people each year download and/or use it social media have said “In 2020, there are 3.96 billion people actively using social media in the world, and this is an increase of 10.9% year-on-year from 3.48 billion in 2019." People have also studied that social media can affect your health in many ways, sometimes it can give you depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and it can give you random thoughts. Also social media might have inadequacy about your life and/or appearance.
ReplyDeleteHow much homework do you think is fair? Officials say for every grade number you have, you get 10 minutes of homework. For example, first graders are supposed to get 10 minutes of homework while eighth graders will get 80 minutes of homework. However, not all schools are following the 10 minute rule. Some elementary students get three times the amount of homework they should be getting. Similarly, high schools are seeing upwards of three hours of homework. In a study of Spanish students, they found that students who get regularly assigned homework did better on tests, but students who get 90-100 minutes of homework acually did worse. Studies have shown too much homework can lead to less time for lesure activities and sleep deprivation. More homework can also mean less time for extracurricular activities. "At all grade levels, doing other things after school have positive effects," says Harris Cooper, a social psychcologist at Duke University.

Does 120% sound like a lot to you? Lgbtq+ youth have a 120% higher risk to experience homelessness. Lgbtq+ homelessness usually is a cause from being rejected by their families for their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both. If they aren't kicked to the curb by their families, they still have special needs that some families cannot provide, especially transgender people. Trangender people suffer from gender dysphoria, which could cause problems for families. It can be hard for most people to switch names for someone or pronouns. Transitional support is also a big part of being transgender. Acceptance is a huge part of coming out and a lot of families won't accept people who are lgbtq+. Which usually leads to being rejected and getting kicked out. \

I wish I could be outside playing sports with all of my friends. I think that's what all athletes are wishing for. Being able to play and have fun without the worries of getting a deadly virus. Jerome Adams, U.S surgeon general, shares her point of view on kids playing sports during the pandemic. "We know that being outside will likely lower your risk of getting COVID because It's good for your immune system." It is great to be outside It helps your mental and physical health. Mental health for you to get outside and not be cooped inside on video games all day. Physical health for you to be active and healthy. It's not that easy though, yes being outside would help lower risks. You would also need to be extremely safe. There's still many precautions that players/coaches would have to take to be able to play. Such as washing hands frequently which shouldn't be a problem. Using hand sanitizer with at least 60% of alcohol in it. This doesn't include Indoor sports but soon enough we all will be outside when the weather gets nice. If we do those things above that the CDC recommends then we should be able to play sports and be safe at the same time.

Would you be okay with waking up, knowing that you are at risk for major health conditions; just because you are making bad health decisions. A Rochester study has proven that just being overweight could lead to a higher chance of getting / dying from Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, Colon Cancers, Sleep Apnea, the list could go on. Furthermore a CDC study has shown that 2.5 million people die from obesity a year, and 3.8 million people die to malnutrition (not enough proper nutrients). These are all things we can stop with good healthy decisions such as, getting enough physical activity and worrying about what we put in our bodies.

Does 12 pets dying sound bad to you? In a rack system if there is a power outage or a thermostat failure then all or some animals can die in the rack. A rack system is a set of plastic containers the correct size for the animals stacked on top of each other. This could be catastrophic because you would have lost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Though with a terrarium you will have less pets in the tank so less a chance of more death. Also you will have more enrichment with the terrariums then with the racks. You also have more regulation in the temperature on both sides. Terrariums have the capacity to hold climbing and ground dwelling pets with the tall and long sizes, but with racks you can only do ground dwelling animals without being cruel. To add on to this the racks cant have UVB as easily as terrariums can.

Let us think for a second, when we use fossil fuels we are usually burning coal or some other natural gas. Arcadia says that, “Coal is the second largest fossil fuel used in the U.S.” When we use these fuels we are letting out terrible gasses such as methane. As a whole the U.S. wastes about 66.7% of energy... JUST from leaving the lights on. I think that we have all done that at some point, right before we go to bed, or when we leave the house. So that means that we are making fuels and sending toxins into the air to make energy, just so it can be wasted. We cannot say, "That's not my fault!"... We are all playing a role in this catastrophe. There are ways we can help. So just remember to turn off the lights, it will make a ginormous difference.

4:30, 7:00, 11:00, and your essay is due at 11:59. Imagine the stressful and sweaty feeling. Procrastination is a huge problem. It's effects are almost guaranteed to show later in life. Surprisingly though, "it's not about time management," says Joseph Ferrari, professor of psychology. Procrastination is not an easy problem to fix. "Telling a chronic procrastinator to just do it is like telling a depressed person to simply feel better," states Joseph Ferrari. No way is that going to work. Sometimes procrastinators can suffer from low self esteem and self doubt. This makes them have a mindset of "if I don't do it, they can't judge my ability." Almost 1 out of 2 adults say that they have had a negative impact on their life. I simply think that the reason for procrastination is just I don't want to do it, but Toronto from Clary Lay of York university says otherwise. He says "Procrastinators are also neurotically disorganized in their thinking, making them forgetful and less likely to plan well.”

Haven't you heard about air pollution and how dangerous it is now? Well, a major reason for air pollution is gasoline vehicles. If the world had switched to electric vehicles then it would solve a lot of problems. First of all, it would be a collective mission for the world. London, Los Angles, and many other major cities have pledged to ban gas vehicles and switch to electric cars by 2030. With this switch, air pollution would be significantly reduced by 83%. According to CleanTechnica, an electric car would let out less Co2 in a lifetime than diesel cars even when powered by the dirtiest electricity. Along with that, there would be fewer diseases like asthma and bronchitis. The air quality is terrible right now but the ban it would help people get better air and be better for their health.

Would you like to be comfortable all day in your jammies? The change this year from traditional school to having some school remotely is better for students. Everybody can go at their own pace. Students don’t have to move around and can sit in their chair all day so you don’t have to worry about getting to the next class. Teachers can control the classes easier because there are less students in the room. One student said, “The fact that I am learning so much better away from the classroom shows something is wrong with our system.”

ReplyDeleteAs teens, you will always the standard "teens are supposed to get 9-11 hours of sleep per night." However I dont believe its ever been percived realistically. A survery done in 2015 showed that 2 out 3 highschool students don't get enough sleep. Around 72% of highschoolers and 57% of middle schoolers lack sleep. Not getting enough sleep is apprehensive to your body. It can cause obesity, diabetes and severe problems to your brain. From the years of 2009-2015 survey numbers went down with a 3.6% difference. But it should've fretfully went down more in the last 6 years. Also, considering this is the first time they surveyed middle schoolers.

When someone says pollution, what do you think about? Most likely your first thought is the liter around the world and the trash and plastic in the ocean, because they are the topics most talked about. Pollution is about more than the litter. Humans in general cause more damage to the environment than we think. “One thing we see very often is that pollution starts off in one place but ends up somewhere very far afield,” says David Edwards. The factories don't effect only the parts close around it, but it effects all the parts, far and close. “People used the ocean as a dumping ground”, Levin says. In 2007, cow DNA was found at the bottom of the Kermadec Trench. “I’m sure it was just a ship dumping its leftovers” Levin says. Even though it was only cow leftovers being dumped. it still has an effect. The boats have to get in the ocean to be able to dump the parts. Sonar from ship engines are impacting the lives of sea animals. "Sonar is becoming an increasing problem that has been implicated in whale, dolphin and squid deaths.”

Do you think younger kids should be able to ride a snowmobile on state land? I do, at least a little younger. Age 10 to 17 have to take a safety course to ride on state land. People have the choice to do it online or go to the place to do it. the online one costs $24.99, and for the one you go to the location to get the safety course that would be $5.00. And you have to get the safety course when you are younger and then pass the safety course and carry the certificate with you when they are riding on state land. If you can not give the people that pull you over the certificate on demand it is a ticketable offense.

Does a country with a 1.4 billion population economy sound scary to you? China has had huge economic growth and is starting to change some of the parts that they don't like. One of them was decreasing the poverty line which means that they are changing low-class people into an average class in China. This low class means that they have no electricity and no water source but still making a living like it's the 1940s. Only 3.3% are living below the poverty line. China has also been developing 5G technology. For example, a company name Huawei was the fastest company that was making 5G tech that quickly in the world. More people are also living in urban households (Living in a city) because in 2017 60% of China's population lives in urban households, but in 1980 20% were living in urban households. China has also been having a huge money growth that might catch up to the US because in 2019 its economic growth totaled was 22.5 trillion dollars which that was eight percent more than the percentage that was in 2018. China has also been boosting domestic demands. This means that more people could survive now because of boosting of domestic demands. China's huge economic growth might end up coming to be chasing the US over and catching them up very quickly, and turning to be number one in the future.

Are your children ready for the future? Many studies are saying no. Homework is becoming too easy, leaving children unprepared. A study of the use of common core standards in homework by the University of Wisconsin Madison shows that most homework focuses on memorization and recall rather than the common core standards.”The goal is not necessarily to push a child to their limit, but more just push a child to think critically in the work that they’re doing rather than just breeze through a math worksheet for five minutes, circling the greater number,” said Meg Benner a senior consultant for the Center for American Progress. This is just part of the negative trend in schools. This is bad news for educators and parents because a lack of critical thinking in school work hurts student's ability to think critically. This can cause students to lose out on opportunities and make bad decisions in the future.
ReplyDeleteIf our nation is too stand a chance in the ever globalizing world, schools need to challenge students to think critically as much as possible to maximize their potential and prepare them for the future.

People do animal testing all the time but that dose not make it right because over 115 million animals die each year after animal testing and it’s wrong. Animal abuse needs to stop because it’s not just a few it’s many.
