You have been researching a societal problem of your choice, and you should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.

In one paragraph:

explain what the societal problem is, and
include your most recent evidence (example or statistics) to prove its existence (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).

  1. Cyberbullying is such a big problem. 1.5 million students in 2008-2009 school year had been cyberbullied. 64% of respondents thought that people did cyberbullying for fun and 45% said that people did it because they were bored, mean, or had family problems.

    1. Cyberbullying is such a big problem now. I think that the kids that are bullying other kids should talk to someone. It's true that most of the people that bully do have a problem with family, so they want someone to feel the way they do. If they talk to someone they could get help with their problems at home, or any problems they have which might make them have self esteem so they wouldn't bully as much.

    2. I say that cyberbullying is a big problem because a lot of people are get bullied online. It is because they have nothing better to do. They are upset or have other feelings and want to put it out on someone else. I think to make cyberbullying less a problem is to ban all social media sites. Also ban websites that people can get on and cyberbully someone.

    3. Cyberbullying is a big problem because kids over the world are being bullied online and some people just do it for fun. I think some solutions have been attempted like some kids do talk to someone about the problem they are having online and others don't,and some kids see kids that are being bullied and they say something about it to a teacher or a counselor. I think a solution could be to stop cyberbullying, and be a buddy instead of being a bully,And if you see someone getting bullied online to tell people and don't just step in and bully them too.

    4. I think a solution to this problem is to put bigger restrictions on posts and comments. If there is a post saying something hurtful, that post gets deleted before anyone sees it. Also, having an increase in counseling kids would be helpful to limit the number of people cyberbullied and limit the number of people get upset when they see a hurtful post.

  2. One major problem in our world is the price of higher education. For instance, the average tuition in community college, the cheapest type of college, is $3435 per year. That's like buying multiple high-end computers every year in college. Additionally, prices for supplies like textbooks have gone up because competition can't exist in that market (because all students for a class are required to use a specific textbook). In total, education prices are 3 times what they were before. You would need to work full-time at federal minimum wage to pay for college now, whereas in 1980, you could have just worked 6 hours per week at what was at that time minimum wage.

    1. This is a pretty high problem in America actually, Noah. I saw this article talking about how much college fees for private schools cost. One solution is to make a government law saying that higher school level fees should only be able to have a maximum fee level for higher education systems.

      Nice Job Noah.

    2. Noah I agree with you education is high priced. In our country college books and more cost people. And it is difficult for people to finish school and they don't pay it off. One solution is that they should make it affordable.

      Delete
    3. Noah, I agree with you a hundred percent. People should be able to get a higher education at a reasonable price. One solution to this might be to create high education schools for students who can't afford other high education colleges.

    4. College is really expensive, especially if you are planning going for more than 2 years. I think if we would lower the cost of colleges then we have to work harder in order to prove to the government that if they make it easier on us money wise then we should be able to "pay" them back. We can also make dorm cost and meals affordable because many young adults go to out of state colleges and most don't have time in-between classes to cook a whole meal.

  3. Nuclear weapons were invented in the 40s. The US used them to bomb Japan, helping end WWII. Now 8 different countries possess this power, but one seems to be the main threat. North Korea has made several bomb threats including a computer animated video of Washington DC being blown up by nuclear bombs. North Korea has made several nuclear bomb tests, all of which violate international law. If Korea continues to use these bombs, then the United states along with other countries could be in serious danger.

    1. Well Kevin maybe one solution that may work is to stop nuclear weapons in all. They should stop them because they put people in danger and could hurt our population of people in the US. Also they could make a law banning all nuclear weapons. That could help because then we won't get bombed

      Delete
    2. Kevin you do propose a problem with North Korea with there nucluar arsenal. I have a few solutions that could and could not work. My first solution is that if there do attack one of our allies in Asia then we should go into war with them. We have far better army then North Korea. Or we could stay out of a war and convince China to stop giving them resources and trading with them because that is North Korea's life line. Then the country would slowly die out as they run out of resources and food.

      Delete
    3. In the past, the US has entered into several treaties with North Korea. In the 1990s, the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; North Korea) entered into the Agreed Framework, which aimed to limit the DPRK's capability to gain nuclear material. However, this agreement collapsed in 2003 when the US found out that the DPRK had a uranium enrichment program. Although diplomacy has worked in the past, war with North Korea should be avoided at all costs nonetheless. Technically, the Korean War hasn't ended since there only has been an armistice between the DPRK and South Korea. Provoking North Korea risks reigniting the Korean War. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is only 50 miles away from the North-South border. North Korea currently faces economic sanctions by the United Nations as a result of their illicit enrichment program. Kim Jong-Un, the leader of the DPRK, primarily aims to preserve his power over the country. Complete and immediate denuclearization is unlikely to be approved by the North Koreans. In addition, many North Koreans are currently lacking sufficient food and other resources they need to survive. The endangerment of the US is primarily caused by the President's aggression (fire and fury) toward the DPRK and the threat of a regime overturn (research Libya's disarmament). Any deal with the DPRK must include relief from sanctions for the North Koreans and eventual denuclearization with adequate access to appropriate facilities within the DPRK to ensure that compliance to such deal is maintained.

    4. Kevin you do have some good examples. One solution that we could test is that they can stop nuclear weapons going out of their country. Unless there's a war then it would be okay.

  4. Deforestation is the removal of forests to make way for humans. 8,000 years ago the Earth was covered by 23,000,000 sq km of forest. Over the last 8,000 years of activity humans have removed half of the total forests. In 2000, the FAO estimated that 30% of the Earth is covered by forests. 57% of those forests are threatened by deforestation. This is because of humans. 15,400 sq km of forests are cut down in Africa alone every year.

    1. Thatdude (whoever you are), this is a very big problem that noone ever considers. Most eople think that trees are renewable because they are grwn from seeds, but at the rate we are harvesting them, we might only 10% of earth covered by trees in the next 500 years or so.

    2. That's crazy that 15,400 sq km of forests are cut down in Africa alone every year. I think a solution for deforestation is to cut down way less trees. I know that businesses are growing and they have to build new buildings but there are a lot of old buildings or houses that they could tear down and make a new building. They could recycle and use the old materials from the old buildings and use them in the new building so we don't have to cut down so many trees.

      Delete
    3. A solution could be reserving land for building things. Also build new buildings where there is abonded buildings not good trees.

      Delete
    4. This is a very bad problem because the environment is get destroyed and making peoples life harder. A solution to this would be to only let humans take a limited amount of forest environment, and once they reach their limit they can't take anymore for their entire life. Or you could put gates with barb wire on top and anyone who gets into the forest will get fined or be sentenced to jail, or both. Or lastly you could put fences up wit barb wire on top with guards protecting them for extra protection for important forests.

      Delete
    5. Our environment needs the forests. They are inhabited with many species. One solution for this problem could be that the country or state can put a limit on the amount of trees they could cut down. They can also put more restrictions in some areas with endangered or important species.

  5. The societal problem that I have chosen is blood diamonds. Blood diamonds are illegal diamonds that are mined in Botswana and the Southwest Democratic Republic of Congo. The diamond industry totals around 81.4 billion dollars per year and about half of that profit is from the illegal blood diamonds. These diamonds are mined by all ages. The most common case is human labor or abuse to get these diamonds. About one hundred laborers die each day from collapses in the mines. Countries want to stop the mining and buying of these diamonds so they started the Kimberly process in 2000. This process makes sure that no diamonds are bought from these mines. There are a lot of loopholes in this process and smugglers have outsmarted this process more times than not. Since 2013 there have been 140,000 smuggled diamonds from these mines, which totals to 24 million dollars. There are two sides to the problem. If the countries stop buying these diamonds it will most likely shut down these mines and stop human labor. But if we stop buying these diamonds the people who work in the mines will starve and have no money. There is no clear solution to this problem.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, because if you stop the miners will not have any money to help themselves. But it is illegal to take blood diamonds. I think a possible solution could be to stop taking blood diamonds, and try to help benefit the miners. There might not be a clear solution, but we could all think of ways to help.

      Delete
    2. I have never heard of blood diamonds and I'm not sure of any solutions that have already been attempted. A solution that could work when put into action with others is maybe make the mines safer for laborers so there aren't many deaths. As you said there aren't many solutions because if one thing happens something else happens and becomes a problem. A solution I think could work is limit the amount of diamonds laborers are taking.

      Delete
    3. This is the first time that I have ever heard of blood diamonds, and I haven't heard of any solutions that have already been put into action for this problem. One solution that may work would be to enforce more laws against the stealing of blood diamonds. If anyone is caught stealing blood diamonds they will have to pay the price; figuratively or literally. Also, we could figure out other ways to reduce the amount of human labor because that's how people end up getting blood diamonds.

      Delete
    4. A possible solution would be to enforce stricter laws so blood diamonds cannot be bought. Although the people working in the illegal diamond industry would be initially harmed, eventually the attitude toward illegal mining will be changed and less people will die.

This is all over the world through North America to Asia. While some may be inspired in America that till means there is awareness for the cause. 2. Good job Pencil Monkey there is a lot of great detail in here about Isis and what they are doing all over the world. What some countries need to do is they need to have a stricter border security. Some countries their border security is as thick as a piece of paper and they wonder why there is a bunch of terror attacks going on around them that are getting claimed by Isis. I think one solution would be is to make the border security more like North America or Canada, sure terror attacks happen in the US and Canada but it is nothing compared to what is happening in Europe. So I think that this solution would help stop Isis a lot more than having barely any border security.

    3. How would we bring out more security in borders Gorgie? It would cost lots of money to fix the damages in the Middle east, Africa, and Europe. Sure, major countries have been attacked by Isis but how would we, (or any other country). Be able to provide enough for damages and the border control.

    4. a very simple solution to a problem like this is something that has actually been said before, by the president too, it is to completely obliterate isis as a whole, with a bomb. This has been attempted before (I think) and ISIS has shrunk a bit.

    5. Pencil Monkey, Knowing one cause of this problem is religion maybe the solution could give everyone in Asia freedom of religion. This is a solution that will probably never happen (at least not in this time) so another idea could be to send more troops to Asia. If ISIS is defeated then the people of Iraq and Iran can practice the religion they want. If all allies help each other I believe this is a possibility.

  7. Child labor has been a big problem starting from before the 1800's to today. We have been forcing children and teens to do hazardous tasks that children shouldn't be doing. Usually children work because their parents need money. During the 1800's children ages 6-12 worked 16 hours PER day in factories or mines with no breaks. If children fell asleep on the job their bosses would beat them so they wouldn't do it again. Today in the US 37% of teens are doing hazardous tasks or using hazardous items. People like to hire children because they know children can't complain about their job because they have no power. Around the world over 100 million children are being taken advantage of working in mining, agriculture, and domestic labor.

    1. I think that child labor is a big problem to. I think a solution could be that anywhere you live you can not force a child to work and to do a hazardous task intill they are 16. They should not force children to do hazardous tasks. It should be a law intill a certain age because kids still have to go to school. They need sleep to so if they work to much they verly get sleep and are tired all the time. They should have at less only the children work like 4 hours a day but nothing to much for the children.

      Delete
    2. Good job! A solution I came up with while reading this was, congress should pass a law saying that children should be in school and should be allowed to sleep every night. Another solution that I came up with was, if children are going to work in factories, then they should be able to have a break when they need it, and they shouldn't get punished for needing to rest. The last solution that I came up with was, to check on the factory owners and make sure they are keeping the children safe and out of any dangerous situations.

    3. Child labor is a real big problem mostly back then. There has been solutions that been made to help this problem for example working papers. kids who go to school can get a working papers saying they want to work. So it is not child labor because they want to do it.

      Delete
    4. Forced child labor in a very big problem that has improved since before the 1800's. The United States labor Department requires teens under a certain age to have working papers if applying for a job. This helps because it is illegal to hire a teen who doesn't have the working papers. This ensures that the teens are safe and willing to work because they asked for the papers at school.

  8. Gender inequality has been a recurring problem throughout history. Women couldn't hold property without their husbands permission until 1839 and the 19th amendment, which gave women the official right to vote, wasn't passed until 1920. People like Hillary Clinton have continued to fought for their rights as women, making strides throughout history by receiving new government positions. Although we have made all of these advances in women’s rights throughout history, women are still treated unequal compared to men and continue to be paid 20% less than men. Women have been able to hold jobs during certain parts of history. During the Revolutionary war, women took over men’s jobs in business and played important roles in society. After the war, women went back to being underappreciated. Women keep advancing, but for now, there isn’t a solution.

    1. I think that inequality is a big problem. It has gotten better over years and I think it will still continue to get better but like you said there isn't really a solution yet and I don't think anything can really solve this except changing peoples opinions on men and women.

    2. Monica I think this is a big problem because women can do exactly what a man can do and that is not fair during WWII women did the same jobs as men when they left for war. And they still do it now to this day. A man can be a cop and so can a woman. A male cop can take someone down and so can a woman. So one solution i like said with Mitchel maybe have a competition to see who is better or to see if they are equal.

      Delete
    3. Monica, I agree that this is a very big problem not only now but dating back all throughout history. I think that one possible solution for this problem is to teach kids more about the problem when they are young. What I mean by this is to show kids that it is a problem that needs to be changed, and not to make them feel as though their gender dictates what they can and can't do.

      Delete
    4. Monica, I like your research. Sometimes gender inequality is caused by a lack of education (like thinking that women and men aren't equal). So maybe educating people about gender equality would be a possible solution. Of course, some people aren't willing to change their viewpoints, but it might get some people to start thinking better.

  9. No one wants to be inferior or part of something inferior to something else. This, by itself, is completely natural and understandable. However, the want to be superior is many times taken to the extreme. This has resulted in nationalism, the belief one's nation is superior to others. Nationalism almost never leads to something good. This is the case with Nazi Germany. After their defeat in WWI, the German people were weak, scared, and vengeful. They felt attacked by the world and betrayed by a weak government, so they looked for someone who would reverse this. Many answered the call, forming several nationalist groups throughout Germany, but there was one group that was able to sieze control. This group was the National Socialist German Workers Party, otherwise known as the Nazi Party. Under the leadership of the Nazis, Germany was brought back from the brink of collapse and became a global superpower. This created newfound pride in being German, and the ego of Nazi Germany swelled so much that they believed they were superior to the entire world, and deserved to rule it. This led to WWII, one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history. This cycle of nationalism and bloodshed has happened time after time and shows no sign of stopping.

    1. Aiden, I believe a way to help stop nationalism is to create a law banning it. If we had a law that banned countries from taking over or overpowering other countries because they just think they're better then others this wouldn't happen. However, everyone has their own opinion on who's better so there is no way to 100% stop nationalism.

      Delete
    2. Aiden, I do agree with you that nationalism is not a good thing and that often times it does not led to something good. A solution that might work is having leaders of countries that are not getting along get together and tri to work out there problems.

    3. Nationalism never leads to something good; I agree with you on that. A way we could possibly fix it is by making sure countries are happy with one another but also making sure no raids or the taking over of another country occurs. Another way we could stop nationalism is by using the United Nations with more power and or force to keep all the countries in line with one another.

  10. Through history and in today's society, women have been unequal from men. Yes, we are more equal then we were in the past, but that doesn't mean the job is done. Still, in this day women do not have equal pay. The average woman has to work 16 months in order to receive the same amount of money a man would in 12 months. That's an extra third of a year! Also, many women are forced to be supported by men, even though they can support themselves, are not allowed in military drafts, and don't have the right to not work. Obviously we have an issue, and we need to find a solution now.

    1. Hannah you make a good argument and good points. The solution to the problem is simple we have to rase pay for women. If the big corperation don't comply then start a strike and start a conversation about this topic so the message goes around.

      Delete
    2. I definitely agree that the fight for equality between women and men is not over. An obvious solution to this would be to impose new laws that would balance pay between men and women, but another solution could be to really instill an education about equality of men and women, and what still needs to be done, in schools today so that kids can grow up to fight for equality.

      Delete
    3. I think that we need to not only make the pay equal, but make our mindsets about each gender equal. If there are leaders in major corporations that think that one gender is superior to the other, then change will most likely not happen easily.

      Delete
    4. Possible solutions for women equality is to eliminate gender-based roles and to create women role models for young girls. Eliminating gender based-roles will create equal roles for men and women not just men. Creating women roles models will influence girls to know and understand that men aren't superior than anyone and that we are all equal.

  11. Food waste is a problem that is often ignored or overlooked in today’s society when there seems to be much bigger problems at hand. We talk about pollution, and garbage, and plastic all the time. But in the US in 2012, 35 million metric tons of food were thrown out, ⅕ of all garbage tossed that year. That’s more than both plastic and paper. It is estimated that 1/3 to 1/2 of all food produced in each year is wasted. Whether it's thrown out and left in a landfill or just left to rot on the fields, it's giving off methane when rotting. And with that much food being wasted, it becomes a top emitter of greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. On top of all this, there's the glaring problem of the millions around the world that go hungry every day. The United Nations approximate that 2 billion people could be fed by the food wasted every year, compared to the estimated 842 million who suffer hunger. This is an issue that needs to be acknowledged, for the sake of the world.

    1. Joanna, I thank you for telling me about this. Bringing up this niche problem really showed of the smaller things that still cause a major problem. You said, in your paragraph that 842 million go hungry in the world. This problem, I think can actually help your problem of food waste. If we were to give the food we give up to the hungry, then not only would the hungry get to eat, but the food that we don't want wouldn't go to waste. Albeit, we would all need to chip in. If everyone doesn't lend a hand, then there is no way that we could do it, because a few select people can't feed everyone who currently is starving in the world. But if we do, I believe that this may work.

      Delete
    2. I agree that wasting food is a big problem especially considering all the people in the world that are starving. I think one solution to this could be giving out smaller food portions. The less food they have the less food they can waste.

      Delete
    3. The fact that those of us with the privilege of healthy food are throwing it away without a second thought is disheartening. At some environmental camps, we keep track of "ort," a nonsense word that means the food left on your plate. Any ort has to be eaten by someone else, because otherwise we would be wasting perfectly good food. One solution that comes to mind would be portioning programs. Some brands, like Blue Apron, sell foods ingredients that make only what four to six people can eat (this brand also delivers the ingredients to your house). There are also specifically sized containers for storing serving sizes of food. If you only serve yourself a small amount to start, there should be little to no leftovers that you can't finish, and ultimately less food getting shoveled into the garbage can.

    4. This is a major problem for the safety of the earth and us as organisms who rely on the earth for survival. I think that educating people about this problem could be a very efficient and effective solution. Most problems are caused because of ignorant people who don't understand that they are responsible for this earth as are all of us. If Americans could cut down on their food consumption then it would not only help the earth, but it could help benefit the overall health of this country. The issue is that eating lots of food is practically our culture. It is so integrated into our society that it would be extremely difficult to decrease food consumption. However, everyone has to start somewhere. Telling others that eating a lot and wasting leftovers is bad for you and the earth could make a small difference. Small differences have the potential to build up into an enormous impact.

However, evidence of war comes back much farther, with war pictographs made in 3,500 BCE, castle fortifications dating back to 7,000 BCE, and the first crossbow made in 10,000 BCE! War hasn't exactly stopped either in our current day and age. In WWII, taking place in 1939 - 1945, we had 407,316 American casualties alone. We spent 321 billion dollars at the time, or 3 trillion dollars now. In fact, national security is valued so highly now that 54% of federal spendings was spent on military affairs in 2015. Getting rid of guns would be extremely hard because people can make guns and also people will try to hide there guns. By the way, great job

    3. There can't be any true solution to this problem until we stop having disagreements. Since everyone is unique it seems that this may never happen. However another cause of war is nationalism. This will never let us have one big country, anti-war treaty, no gun policy, or anything like that. One solution to this may be to create an alliance. This worked for the UN (there have been no major european wars since the creation of the UN). This alliance shifts nationalism away from one country to one alliance. To create this we may need to stifle other countries who demand independence. This would take force also known as war. This is a very hard problem to solve, if we ever can solve it.

What can be done is that we limit the amount of war that is going on. We can do these by forming better realtions with all countrys. Another solution is that if a country starts a was they are greatly punished. I think that will scare them out of their war efforts. Stoping all war is impossable, but limiting it can and has to be done.

Many animal species which live in trees are losing their habitats due to humans. Humans have been cutting down many trees for houses or using the land for farming which causes more and more animals to become endangered. Birds are one animal which lives in trees. In 2015, 11.1% of bird species were endangered. Also, in 2017, 81 bird species were listed under the “Endangered Species Act of 1973” which provides conservation to threatened and endangered species. But not only are birds endangered, so are many other types of animals like mammals and amphibians. 17.9% of mammals and 22.7% of amphibians were endangered in 2015. And this problem is still continuing. Many species are also threatened. Threatened species are species which are believed to become endangered soon. 2. Some solutions that have been working are to limit the number of trees lost to deforestation by over logging. The United States has made laws that protect land and limit logging of wood products and development. Both these solutions are helping the endangered species but many species are still endangered. Some reasons why the problem is still vast is because some people don't follow the laws. Illegal hunting, logging, and encroachment on protected land are big factors in the endangerment of animals.

    3. I agree, Kaylynn, that us humans do more harm than good to the environment. Even if we march around with posters and flags that say "SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT," companies need to make money to sustain a proper economy. But the factories that make those posters and flags and the cars that are used to get to those factories release harmful gases into the air. We are such a destructive species. One solution could be to try to eliminate the amount of trash we dump into the landfill (that space could've been used for an entire ecosystem to live and thrive) and try to stop pollution.

  14. The societal problem I am researching is human impact on extinction. Though extinction can happen naturally, a large portion of extinction does occur because of human impact. Human impact such as pollution is a very well known cause of extinction. An example of this is the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that happened in April of 2010. This oil spill spilled over 130 million gallons of oil into the sea in 87 days. Some of the oil that sunk to the bottom damaged coral reefs which is where fish hide from predators and live. Lots of fish died because of this. Birds were also spotted with their bodies covered in oil. This affects their ability to fly. If they can not fly they can easily die because in order to get away from predators they fly away. If species start going extinct then the food chain will be altered and the ecosystem would no longer be stable.

    1. Good job! Some solutions that I came up with are, be more careful when transporting harmful things across the ocean. Another solution I came up with is if you do spill harmful things in the ocean or anywhere, you should clean it up and make sure all of the animals living in that habitat are okay. One last solution is to securely seal whatever you are transporting, to make sure nothing will spill.

But in order to do this we need a source in order to "advertise" or "display" this. So, we need a organization to help provide or we could create a group of dedicated people to help with this problem. There is The Pegasus Foundation and they have a page on their website all about your topic. They also have more sub-pages related to this topic to help support your problem. They are notified about what happens to some specific animals they know about or rescued.

  15. My societal problem is inequality in sports. Proof that this is a problem is that men get paid more money. In 30% of sports men are paid higher prize money than women. Also a male Pro Tour rider gets paid almost double what a woman can be lucky to get. A male gets an average 27,000 british pounds every year while a woman is lucky to get british 15,000 pounds. Finally only 0.4% of commercial investment goes towards womans sports.

    1. I agree Mitchel it is not fair that men get to get paid more money then women in sports. I think that women are as good as men or even better. Men get paid average 36,320 US dollars when you convert it and women get paid 20,177 US dollars that is a big difference. That is a 16,143 dollar difference. One solution could be is to have one big competition and have women and men compete to see if a women is capable to do what a man can do. And if this is true women and men should get paid equal.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you and Jordon. I think that we could do better on equality for women and men, we could pay the same for women to do the same job as men because they are doing the same amount of work and getting the same amount of breaks but getting less.

      Delete
    3. That is a big societalprobelm. One solution could be making a law that women and men are paid the same for playing the same sport. Another solution could be that if an invester invest in a male sport they have to invest the same amount in a female sport. There must be tons more solutions but you have to consider that male sports tend to be more popular then female sports.

    4. I agree; sports inequality is a big issue. One solution that may work would be to create and enforce a law that states that men and women should receive equal pay if they are doing the equal amount of work in a certain sport. I'm not saying that someone that sits on their couch all day deserves the same pay as an NFL player, but I think that if a women does the same sport as a man and they both equally work hard in it, they should get the same pay. One cause of this may be investors thinking that men are superior to women, which is a whole different issue.

Africa gained its independence in 1960, around the same time as Indonesia, yet now the GDP of the African countries in total is less that Indonesia's GDP. Since its independence, Africa has been struggling with poverty and other problems worsened by corruption among its government leaders. Out of the 6 populated continents, Africa is currently the poorest. The GDP of the 40 African countries combined is only $459.09 billion, and over half of that amount is contributed solely by South Africa and Nigeria, who together have a GDP of $255.6 billion.

    4. Currently, Africa's governments are highly corrupt, which keeps billions of dollars from flowing into relief efforts. A way to relieve this would be placing restrictions on foreign aid so that money given to the government can't be transferred away from aid organizations through overpricing or other means. Money also flows out of Africa through China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative, which places African countries that host parts of the infrastructure into lots of debt. Also, education tends to disproportionately be allowed for ones that can pay. Education in African countries should be subsidized or made free to all citizens of their respective countries to ensure that all African children are never stuck in a perpetual cycle of poverty. In addition, job opportunities must be provided or people must be allowed to get work visas from foreign countries. These solutions won't work without others, as food is useless if people can't get jobs. Another possible solution to this is that the US should grant African countries "Temporary Protected Status," which would give African natives the opportunity to come to the US. Although the TPS program would have to be amended, it may be an important solution to the ever-growing problem of poverty.

Racial violence has been around ever since the white population has came to America. I'm not saying only whites are racist, I'm saying how long it's been around. Racism continues to this day. There were 130 KKK groups in 2016 and 193 black separatist groups in 2015. Since 2015, there has been a 197% increase in anti-muslim hate groups. There has been no showing of decline as the number of these groups keep increasing. This problem has been around for centuries and still hasn't been solved. We need to solve this now and end racism.

    3. Jack Watts, I don't think that hunting down the KKK or any other racial hate groups will help the problem. If anything, I think it would make it worse, because violence attracts violence. Riots could break out and people could protest due to the First Amendment's "freedom of speech." Even though racism is entirely wrong and hateful and I don't support it, like I said, violence will just attract more violence. They want attention, because "there's no such thing as bad publicity" and it will only help their hate crimes flourish if they know that they are affecting other people. Maybe a solution could be to add another amendment to the Constitution and/or make a federal law to ban it. After that, if they continue their hateful actions, we can arrest them. I agree that racism needs to end, but maybe it could be in a more peaceful way.

on that person, if more keep escaping, the same thing would happen but more guards would guard the people that escaped.

Laws and rules can be reformed, and if the people who run the UN are incompetent, then they should be replaced. An organization is vastly effected by who leads it, and a change in leadership might help the problem. People like to stick with rules that their predecessors laid in place for them; even if those rules don't apply to modern times. 19. Water Pollution is a big problem, because we don't have as much water as we think. Only 2% of the worlds water is freshwater and of that only 0.1% is used for household purposes. Our water supply isn't exactly growing either. Due to burning fossil fuels, and the release of greenhouse gases into the air, our planet is warming up. Many of our lakes are starting to dry up, and as our human population continues to grow, we use more and more water. Despite water being a valuable resource, humans continue to waste and pollute water. Water pollution has been around for a long time. Archaeologists found old tools, and parts of tools simply deposited in lakes, releasing led into the water. Then industries started to use chemicals and plastics like PCBs and pesticides like DDT. These substances not only accumulate in our waters, but they are not biodegradable, so they won't ever dissolve or break down; drinking these waters has led to serious diseases, like cancer. The problem in only worsening, more lives have been lost due to water pollution then the last 100 years. Now, in undeveloped countries 70% of the industrial waste is dumped into their drinkable water supply. Ever 21 seconds, somewhere in a poor nation, a child dies from drinking polluted water. There are 3,575,000 deaths a year related to water pollution. Pollutants also kill animals, not just sea creatures. The animals and humans that eat the sea creatures can die, and the chemicals can get into the plants, which hurt the animals that eat those plants. Littering is another problem, 9 billion tons of litter currently goes into our oceans every year, compared to 6.4 million tons in 1997. It’s hard, and costly to extract, and continues to trap animals, or ingest them, which affects anything or anyone who eats them.

  20. The societal problem I am researching is poverty, which is a very common issue now, and has many people spending their whole life in a miserable place; which has no escape? In wealthy countries like the US, there is a very high percent of people living in poverty, 21.9 million. This ranks number one on the bar graph, followed by Italy, which is 16.6 million. Some people say that there is no reason why people from a lower class family shouldn’t grow up and strive in a wealthy country with many resources. For they have the same opportunities, such as public schools, free libraries etc. Yet some people say that isn’t enough. An anonymous quote stated that she was a girl is highschool, she said she can’t do well because her family can’t afford a computer. She said the teachers recommend books, but her family can’t afford them. So what can the government add in to help people with little, to no resources?

One solution that I think could help with this is making people more aware of poverty and the bad impacts that it can have on someone's life. Although most kids are aware that poverty is a thing; they are told to just walk by the homeless people on the streets and act like they aren't there. Instead of doing this I think that people should be encouraged to do something. Even if that means just giving someone you see the apple that you had packed in case you got hungry on your way to work, or giving them the dollar that you were going to spend on a pack of gum because you had forgotten yours at home.

Some things schools have tried are giving out books needed for the school year so people can have that resource at home. Other things schools can do to help may be trying to give students a laptop/ chromebook to students. So families will not have to worry about that cost.

  21. Animal testing is a serious current problem. In 2016, The United States Agriculture Department(USDA) reported that 820,812 animals were used in experiments at USDA facilities, excluding animals such as amphibians, reptiles, rats, and birds. The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has also stated from a study that around 92% of drugs the seemed safe on tested animals either don't work on humans, or are dangerous. This has caused half of approved drugs to be relabeled because the side effects weren't present in the animal tests. The Animal Welfare Act, passed in 1966, states that animals can legally be burned, shocked, poisoned, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain damaged, all with no pain killers required. Many experimentation processes also involve taking a healthy being from another species, inducing a condition that it may not usually contract, keeping it in an unnatural or stressful environment, and applying results to the humans who normally contract these conditions/diseases, which often proves to be unreliable.

    ReplyDelete

    1. How could people even do that to animals just to test something? They shouldn't use animals to go through so much pain to test something. I think a solution for this would be before you start testing is to research what shouldn't be put into a humans body. Like medicines and drugs, etc.

      Delete
    2. A possible solution to animal testing is limiting the amount of animals each scientist/person is allowed to test. This would make animals less likely to be harmed because the people will work harder and make sure their test will succeed before testing the animal.

  23. No matter where you get in life, you always feel that there is some 1% demographic that makes more money per day than you will make in a lifetime. But what if I told you that the feeling is not too far fetched? Income inequality is a huge problem in the US. In 1965, the typical industrial CEO earned about 20 times more than a typical worker. The ratio is now 383:1. Also, the average after tax income of the top one percent rose 279 percent from 1979 to 2007. Furthermore, From 1968 to 2010, the share of national income earned by the top 20 percent rose from 42.6 to 50.2 percent. In the same time, the share of income from the middle class decreased from 53.2 to 46.5 percent. Wages for the upper class continue to rise daily, but wages for the middle class continue to shrink. If we allow this to happen, burdens placed on the economy from poverty and crime will increase, and it will eventually lead to chaos in our society. Income inequality is real, and it must be lessened.

Another solution could be making a limit on businesses that say they can only pay people an immense amount of money if they raise the rest of their employers wages. This could get tough though because some people in a business do more work than other people.

However, not only is this freedom taken away from others, but it is abused by those who are privileged to have this right. One example was held in May 2016, where Oscar Lopez Rivera was freed from incarceration after 35 years of being accused for burning an American flag in a rally in the late 1970s. This was to say that Puerto Rico deserved to be a free country from the US after many years. This action exercises the Freedom of Speech. However, it did offend many other people and this was taken highly for granted.

    1. I think a solution for this situation would be that even though you have a freedom of speech you shouldn't be burning an American flag. Yes you can say whatever you want but you shouldn't be burning stuff whenever you want. And if you want to make a point about something, don't burn down a building or something.

      Delete
    2. I think a solution to this problem could be to limit the freedom of speech. If you limit citizens freedom of speech to only being able to have the freedom to say what they want about certain things but not others such as the county I think that it will make people think more before they say or do something. If they know that there might be a consequence of them doing something such as burning the American Flag or saying something bad about the country it might make them more hesitant to do or say it.

There’s many different types of stress but two main ones that the others fall under are Eustress and Distress. Eustress is the stress that is positive an example of that would be getting married or winning a large sum or money or graduating from something, but Distress is the negative stress that has a bad impact on your body and mind. Things that contribute to distress are Divorce, being punished, financial problems and more. I also learned that the second most common stressor with 62% of the people saying it was the main part of their stress was money and the most common one is the future of our nation with 63% saying that’s what stressed them the most in a recent 2017 study conducted by the American Psychological Association. The other common stressors are violence and crime, Political climate and problems at work.

That's why it is so important to talk to someone. Whether it is a close friend, a family member, a school social worker, or a therapist, talking to someone can relieve stress, and you might even find new ways to cope with the stressors in your life. There are even apps out there that help with stress by providing distractions and breathing techniques, but I don't think there are enough of them out there.

They should make sure it won't hurt a person's feelings. This way there would be a lot less kids which carry around the pain of being bullied.

    4. Many victims of bullying act out as a sign of needing help. Students can run to counselors, people can call the police, but authority can only help so much. Cyber bullying leads to many things such as bizarre actions. Most bullying by the bully is because of their jealousy or even their own life. I think that if higher authority had more of an idea of bullying and they approached, blocked, and booted bullies from social media, cyber bullying can start to be reduced.

  27. My societal problem is endangered animals and my evidence is from icun red list. There is 41,415 on the endangered species list and 16,306 are near extinction. The species near extinction went up by 188 species. Every ¼ mammals , ⅛ birds and ⅓ amphibians are on the iucn red list of extinction, along with 70% of plant species. The number of species threatened with extinction has hit 785 and only 65 are found in captivity, human activity over 500 years has caused over 800 species into extinction. Some endangered species are not even known about or discovered, sadly extinction is part of evolutionary cycle and that causes a decrease in biodiversity. Around the 1600 hundreds the human population exploded and within the 400 years 1% of “higher animals” became extinct. So with the way the lives animal and plant species the effects can be reversed if they haven't gone extinct yet, along with whether people are willing to agree to help these species or not. So if we don't help try conserving them they may go extinct and we'll never have them again.

    1. I think that conserving them will work. If we keep them in a habitat that is safe and is close to how they would live in the wild then it is a good idea. If we are conserving them without things they would do and have in their normal life style I don't think it would be a good idea. But if it is a good place for them and it can stop extinction I think it would work.

    2. One solution the world could try is protecting (or not cutting down) habitats for animals that cannot flee their native land. For example we are cutting down the rain forest but animals and plants in the rain forest cannot just pack up and leave to another forest.

    3. I think the point you make about endangered species is great. I think one of the ways we can protect endangered species is to set up habitat police officers in order to protect habitats and wildlife from hunters and poachers.

    4. A very good solution to this in my opinion would be to simply limit hunting for a specific species in a food chain to help the endangered or close to extinctions population number go up a lot more and help balance the food chain. Even if it means that we have to kill more of something to save another thing.
