You have been researching a societal problem of your choice, and you should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.

In one paragraph:

explain what the societal problem is, and
include your most recent evidence (example or statistics) to prove its existence (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).

  1. Homeless people struggle from many things including finding a place to sleep, finding food, transportation, finding a bathroom, finding a way to keep clean and finding shelter. But veterans suffer from more than that. Homeless veterans most times suffer from PTSD and even after serving our country they are homeless on the streets. There are more than 39,471 homeless veterans sleeping on the street any given night and ⅔ of them served our country for 3 or more years. 39% of all veterans will be homeless at some point in their life and 11% of all homeless adults are veterans. I think they deserve a better life after serving our country for such a long time.

    1. A solution that might be able to work is a retirement plan provided by the government. Those who serve the country should be able to live a happy life after their work and the fact they can't is sad. The government should have to provide for those who help keep us alive.

    2. A solution that has been going on is housing assistance. It is cheaper than finding shelter. Another solution that could work is these people could try and find jobs and stores could offer them jobs.

    3. A solution for this problem might be for the VA (United States Department of Veterans Affairs) to engage more in the veterans that have PTSD or some sort of injury. They can give money and compensate for the injury and the homeless, especially since this is a Federal Agency (ran by the government) they have the money to provide.

    4. yes, Veterans should have a better life after serving our country, and A solution to this is to have a plan as to after you are done serving. This can be fixed by having the government help with giving you a plan. A veteran should know what they will do after they are done serving, for example, where they would live. Their family could have a plan for them to come home at some point, or if they have no family, that is when the government should step in. I can offer, again, a retirement plan for after they are done serving, that's all.

  2. Deforestation is very prevalent around the globe. One example is in Eastern Russia. The taiga region in Eastern Russia is a very valuable habitat for many animals including the Amur Tiger. The forests have been destroyed, and roads have been built into them. The destruction of forests means less habitat for the tigers, and the roads make it easier for poachers to kill the tigers. A flood in the Yangtze river located in China occured due to deforestation. This made the Chinese government want to decrease deforestation, so they started importing more wood from foreign countries. The main provider of this wood is Russia, so loggers are cutting down more trees than ever.

    1. You could just get people to plant trees. For each tree cut down, you should plant another. Alternatives for goods made out of wood is an option too, so instead of using paper from wood you could make paper from manure. There could also be more areas set off, like we do with animals.

      Delete
    2. I'm thinking that it is a good idea to plant more trees and maybe not build so many roads but have hiking paths this will cut down on dying trees and those poachers wont have anywhere such a easy time trying to kill tigers and maybe you can make it a sanctuary. Also you can make a lumber yard but instead of buildings it's just a massive place where they can farm trees without damaging the important areas.

    3. I think that one possible solution would be to set off lots of land where humans aren't allowed to cut down trees. This area should retain its natural wildfires, and the area should expand over time. People also shouldn't import animals into this place. This will help because then forests can still grow.

    4. I think one solution is to have more protected habitats like the Pine Bush Preserve where they only cut down invasive species and occasionally do controlled burns. Another solution to work with this is not to bring in invasive species which is a big problem and an invasive species or animals that aren't native to that area. I think that I would be able to use resources more naturally like not wasting lots water.

  3. One major problem in today's society is cyberbullying. More than 25% of teens have been cyberbullied, and 1 in 5 adults have bullied someone throughout their lifetime. 42% of students have seen cyberbullying happen. In 2014 a girl named Justine had over 90 bullying emails in her inbox on her email account. These emails made threats to her safety, which would make anyone upset/nervous. Also, in 2012 $1,000 was given to a student because the school district didn't stand up against the bullying that they witnessed.

    1. Chelsea,
I don't know of any solutions that have already been attempted which is a big problem. A solution that I think could work with a group or others would be to put together a group in school to help stop bullying. A solution that could work is an app to alert a guardian or parent when a lot of emails with hurtful things are sent to or from his/her child.

      Delete
    2. Chelsea, I can't recall hearing any solutions that have been attempted to solve this problem. I think some solutions could be learning more about how to be responsible online in school. Also parents and guardians can check on what their child is doing online. This could stop the bullying at the root of the problem.

      Delete
    3. Chelsea, because of how much people use social media in this day ,this is a major issue. A solution to cyber bullying is informing people on social media to be careful. If people are more aware of what they're saying they may hurt less people. Parents should also be aware of what their kids are doing online if they are being hurt or hurting someone else.

      Delete
    4. One possible solution would be to put tighter security on school emails. If teachers could see emails sent to or by school accounts, teachers could see and do something about cyber-bullying. A possible negative cause of this would be that people could feel their privacy is being invaded. They could even take it to court. Another possibility is just to tell parents or teachers if you are being bullied. This way teachers or parents of the person doing the cyber-bullying can execute the proper punishment. More extreme punishments for cyber-bullying could be created as well.

  4. The societal problem I'm researching is alcoholism; about 623,000 adolescents have an alcohol use disorder. While 15.1 million adults have an alcohol use disorder, when only 1,011,700 of them have seeked help in the last year. If you have an AUD it’s hard to break it. In your genes or your environment you’ll always want to drink; no matter how much love or help you get from family or friends. Alcoholism is a complicated disease and is much harder to overcome than a tobacco usage. About 11 million children live with an alcoholic.

    1. Alcoholism in this day is a very contagious yet personal disease that affects anyone, disregarding their age. Not only does it affects you physically, but it also takes effect emotionally and mentally to the alcoholic and the people close to them. To solve this problem, we can establish a new law that requires a mandatory checkup from an expert or a doctor regularly. While other families are not able to afford the checkup, we can hire or make volunteer positions for interns or college students in the medical major to replace an expert or doctor. In this way, college students or interns are able to earn experience and families with alcoholics are provided with the medical security that they need.

      Delete
    2. Alcoholism is a very serious discussion and topic. The statistics used in this paragraph are very "eye opening. One solution to this problem is to make alcohol illegal without a license for drinking liquor/alcohol. This way, only people who are certified to drink can consume alcohol or liquor. This will decrease the number of alcoholics and liquor mass shippings.

      { Nice job:) }

      Delete
    3. In the past there have been several attempts to stop Alcoholism. For example Prohibition that happened in 1933 tried to end alcohol use but failed because they tried to completely ban alcohol. Your idea to have required checkups can only work if accepted by hospitals. One solution would be to limit the amount of alcohol a person is allowed to sell. what I mean is to limit the supply also so that there would be less alcohol for people to consume per week. This could be a result of the increase in suppliers.

      Delete
    4. Alcoholism is a problem that kids shouldn't have to witness yet so many do. The best way to stop alcoholism would be to enforce laws on the owning of alcohol and buying restrictions. Since most alcoholics don't seek help on their own, family members should go out and seek a doctor or some form of counseling. For those alcoholics who live by themselves, neighbors or friends should seek out the help needed.

    1. Ryan i think a solution to this problem would be to setup sanctuaries for endangered species. Once there populations are back up we would release them back into the wild. Another solution would be to ban all the hunting of any endangered species.

    2. I think a solution to your societal problem ryan would be to prevent habitat loss such as reserving areas and another possible solution would be banning hunting of threatened/endangered species and habitats that are in ruins.

      Delete
    3. One solution to this problem is to have more people talk about this problem. We need to take more actions to this type of cause. If these animals are going extinct more people need to know about it and learn more about why they are going extinct and how they could fix it.

      Delete
    4. It is definite that there will be a mass extinction that will eventually happen soon after a few generations. Solving this problem would take a stretch because it will take human behavior, the government and the economy to really make our solutions be implemented. In our own way, we can prevent this problem by hunting or fishing for only the male species. This way, we can still have the female species to continue reproducing off-springs of their kind. In this way, there is a balance between being able to get what humans need and having a maintained population among a species.

      Delete
    5. Just because most of the species are gone does not mean they can't still roam in the wild because if most of the species of that animal are killed they won't need to kill anymore because of the amount of that species humans/hunter already have. So protecting would be a solution, but it wouldn't need to happen for the entire time that animal is endangered/close to being extinct.

  6. It is 9:35 A.M. on December 14th,2012. The students of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut are ready to start their day. A shooter enters the building and shoots the principal and school psychologist. In the next five minutes, 20 first graders and 4 teachers are shot dead, making it the second largest school shooting in recent United States history. All this grief because of a man with a gun. While gun violence is a recent problem, there are still so many examples of the problem's existence. 48% of people think mass shootings can be stopped, so why hasn't there been any change?

    1. Some solutions that have been created are guards outside of schools and tighter security. But this alone isn't enough because still not all schools have security systems, and sometimes people get through. This solution would work well with a new regulation to all schools, to make it mandatory. If schools being built all had to have a security system, we could prevent further events like this. One solution I think would be effective, is to stop the problem from happening in the first place. If we can have school workers, teachers, and doctors, searching for kids with certain problems we can prevent people from doing things like this in the first place.

      Delete
    2. Some solutions that I think will impact the number of school shootings is better security outside and inside of schools. Another solution that could help is security on doors and more security camras.

      Delete
    3. Better security systems could definitely be effective, but to truly change things, I think that there needs to be more regulation of buying and selling guns. More hoops to jump through, careful checks to own certain guns. Also, not being able to have your own ammunition.

      Delete
    4. We need to really have more regular checks on people, to make sure they're mentally sane. While more guards and security would help a bit, I think that the root of the problem are people who aren't mentally stable. If we help the people with these problems we can probably stop a large amount of gun violence.

  7. Sleep deprivation does not seem like a big deal if you look at it simply as a loss of sleep that you can gain back. however, sleeping very little on the weekdays and then sleeping until noon on the weekends does more harm than you think. One example was when an air-traffic controller caused the Halifax International Airport tower to close down because he took a nap. He was tired because it was 5am and he was in his 2nd 16 hr shift in less than two days. This was important because it could have caused an airplane to crash or delay all of the other flights.

    1. Cadence people who get less sleep are people who are on their phones all night because they can't sleep or they just aren't in the mood because they are too busy with their social life and it's bad. I know there are a few apps parents have where at a certain time their apps are closed off till the morning. I will say on the weekends I am always on my phone until 3 in the morning, but I usually don't get up until the afternoon and maybe later than that.

      Delete
    2. Cadence, what happened with the Halifax International Airport tower was definitely a big deal, and I agree that people should understand how important your sleep hours are, so some solutions for this could be having a sleep schedule, look at how your job impacts your sleep. So, some solutions I can offer anr just simply going to bed at an earlier time. Some problems with this, are staying up on your phone until late. That is why you could also have a sleep schedule. I consider this problem big because If taking a nap risks crashing a plane, then something is wrong.

      Delete
    3. Cadence, One solution would be for kids if they are on electronics or on social media when they can't fall asleep and their brain thinks it's the morning and it doesn't want to fall asleep. I know their are parental controls on some phones except for iPhone and I know they have apps that parents can use to turn off their apps. You can also put your phone in a drawer so you aren't tempted to use it at night. I also think if you shut your phone off at night it would be less tempting to use it and adults can do this too.

      Delete
    4. I'm not sure the government has any solutions so far, but I know they have taken action to help make sure starting times of schools is a bit later, so kids aren't as tired. But as we saw in your example, it's not just kids and teens who aren't getting enough sleep. One solution I think, is that the government could help support late night shifts, by making them shorter, and splitting them into smaller chunks, this way, not only is another job created, but both workers will have more time to sleep, and accidents like this can be avoided.

  8. In my research on wealth inequality, many recent examples have popped up, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed last year. This act slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% which will certainly make a dent on the US' revenue. This act also allows for the repatriation of foreign assets at the relatively low rate of 15.5% or 8% depending on the type of asset. These changes have, in fact, been implemented before in a previous law. The result of that law was that 843 corporations brought a total of $362 billion while also claiming $265 billion in tax deductions. However, many corporations sent this money back to shareholders, which was disallowed under the law, through stock buybacks and other means. Although we cannot be certain that this is exactly what will happen with the recently-passed tax reform act, the previous law may stand as a harbinger of what may happen. However, there's solid evidence that this is exactly what will happen. Apple Inc. repatriated much of its $252 billion in foreign profits back into the US soon after the new tax law passed. Recently, they announced that they would increase their stock buyback program to $310 billion from $100 billion. This is essentially identical to the effects of the previous tax holiday. This will cost the US Government, and as the budget deficit and debt ceiling mount, the US will have to do something about the looming crisis reminiscent of the Great Depression.

    2. I think a solution of this problem is to invest more in women. I say this because investing in women is a really important way to increase economic mobility and strengthen families.

    3. Many have tried to solve economic inequalities with their radical ideas, and most of them failed. They need to go after the root of the problem: the rich not putting money in circulation. When the top 1% decide to horde their gold, their's barely anything to trickle down to the little guy. If the billionaires of the world were forced to put a certain amount of money into charity or circulation each year, we might be able to solve this problem.

    4. I think that a solution to this problem would be to pass reform that would keep large corporation from paying their fair share in taxes. I know this would be hard with the hundreds of lobbyist in Washington, but if we could pass useful regulation with no loopholes it would easily end this problem.

  9. My societal problem is extinction caused by humans. Extinction can caused by many enviromental factors like Basalt eruptions, global cooling or warming, Asteroid or coment impact, and sea level rises or falls. Some factors caused by mean that causes extinction is acid rain, loss of habitat, over hunting, spreading of a disease, global warming, and much other things. One of the most recent extinctions caused by man was the West African black rhinocerous. Poachers hunted the rihino into extinction. Poachers have hunted many animals into extinction. Humans have caused so many extinctions already we must stop it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Riley, I think one solution to helpful extinction caused by humans would be people should take care of the environment like they take care about there cell phones or ipads, etc. People just need to have more respect for the environment. Humans don't care about anything but themselves.

      Delete
    2. Stricter regulations and security around endangered species could help stop poachers from hunting animals into extinction. If humans are also educated on the problem of extinction, and realize how important each and every animal is to the environment it could help compel people to both actively support the cause and be more aware of what they do that harms animals around us.

      Delete
    3. Riley, one solution that could work could be to enforce laws better. There is already the Endangered Species Act that was set in 1973. Humans cause extinction mainly out of greed for money. Elephants are being hunted for their ivory in their tusks. This is worth a lot of money so people won't mind killing the elephant for their ivory as long as they get their money. Maybe if the cost of the ivory goes down then people wouldn't be so opted to kill them for their tusks.

      Delete
    4. One solution that could work is having stronger laws and punishment against poaching and other hunting. Lots of the other causes you talked about are things the earth did such as eruptions, so we have to treat the earth better so things like that don't happen. Also we have to do a better job at realizing when an animal is endangered and put it in a safer spot, so it can stay out of extinction for as long as possible.

  10. Deforestation is by definition the clearing of forests on a massive scale. One more recent example of this is the clearing of the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon is home to millions of plants and animals, and is very biologically diverse. Sadly the Amazon has lost 12% of its area due to logging and development. According to the Brazilian government in 1990 the Amazon lost 5,301 square miles of forestland. And as a slight improvement lost 3,865 square miles of forestland in 2007. That is a lot of land cleared over the course of one year.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree that deforestation is a massive problem and is really harming our environment and ecosystems. Current solutions to deforestation are to make laws to limit how many trees loggers can cut, to plant native trees to replace trees that have been cut down, and to eliminate clear cutting, which is the total elimination of all the trees in an area. One solution derived from your research is to conserve areas of forest as reservations protected by the government, so that logging and development don't destroy forests like the Amazon as drastically, and many native animal species can also be protected.

      Delete
    2. Deforestation is a big problem because it damages ecosystems and the environment of the species that live there. We can try to limit how much of the forest that gets destroyed to protect more of the forest and the species that live there. We can also try to do research on the species living in the forests and move them to protect them so we don't kill them. We should move the species to somewhere safe and while we destroy a small part of the forest.

      Delete
    3. The problem of deforestation is still a consecutive process that needs to immediately stop. Not only does it harm the species that live in them, but it also affects the health of the citizens that live here on Earth. To solve this problem, we can use other sources of nature to use for paper, wood, tissue, and other products by trees. We can also provide industries with other areas of construction. This includes the collaborations of other companies that support each other so that they share a single area of work. This way, businessmen are able to make easier deals among other companies and there are less areas of trees that result to deforestation.

      Delete
    4. One solution I would suggest for deforestation is to clear out less areas for homes. There are many lots and houses that are still available yet many people are still clearing out more and more lots for houses. Another way to reduce the amount of trees we use it through more use of technology. If we continue to use mechanical pencils and other technology such as computers instead of paper, we can reduce the amount of trees we cut down. But that solution will only have a big effect if many people do it.

  11. School shootings have been a big societal problem starting back in 1996. The most recent school shooting was on February 14 2018 at Parkland Florida. The shooter Nikolas Cruz, shot 17 innocent people. He got charged by 34 counts if permitted murder and attempted murder. This is not the first shooting we all know of. From this day there have been about 108 school shootings all across the world since August 1 1966. Leaving about 1,077 people in total dead because of a school shooting. School shootings are a big societal problem not just in America but all over the world and we must stop innocent people from getting killed.

    1. One solution could be is to try and figure out why the school shooting happened. Then they could look for how the shooter was acting before they did it. Then if they were acting similar maybe they could look for it in other people. Then they might be able to stop it before it happens again.

      Delete
    2. If you look at most of the school shooters, you can learn about their background. Some of them had really rough past times or struggle with mental health. I think as a solution would be to address mental health as a problem and give help to those who need help.

    3. Jocelyn, this is unfortunately a huge problem in today's society. We have very poor gun violence laws in the U.S and that needs to change. We may have been able to prevent the shootings that have happened this year if we had stricter laws. Also, many of the school shooters from this year have had mental health issues. I think we should start making people more aware of mental health and get people to go get help. We may be able to prevent more shootings if people get help when in need.

      Delete
    4. To solve this problem, we should look at the causes of this problem. We could research the psychology of school shooters, specifically their motives and home conditions. By doing this, we could specifically target people who display aggressive and unstable tendencies, and provide adequate counseling before they start an attack.

  12. My societal problem is education inequality. This problem exists because rich men who are white have more education than anyone else. Educational inequality in race started when slavery started (the 1800’s). Slaves who were literate were thought to be dangerous, therefore were punished if they were caught trying to learn. At the end of slavery, 5-10% of slaves were able to be literate. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, but the next amendment segregated public places. This means whites got better education systems and african-americans were stuck with whatever is left. Many other races, like hispanics, were also having problems finding a good education. The Brown v. Board of Education thought of this as unconstitutional. More recently, the amount of hispanic and black high school and college graduates is much less than white graduates. Will education inequality ever end?

    1. I believe a solution to this could be the states creating laws that require everyone to teach the same thing the same way. If that happens nobody would have a advantage unless they went and got it themselves.

    2. This problem has a lot of solutions. I think that a solution would be to put more assistance in urban schools for kids to go to college or any form of higher education. This will only wok if we can convince everybody in those inner city schools to pursue education. In the end the federal government needs to be supporting the schools that can't support themselves. Another solution would be to improve the learning environment of lower income schools. This would be making them more appealing and a better alternative to not going to college. We also need to improve the level of teaching staff we employ in these schools. Those are just some solutions I think would work.

      Delete
    3. I think that this is a relatively unconsidered problem, and not much action has been taken by the government, but I might be wrong. The government has probably tried to make sure all schools have enough money, and are equipped with enough resources. However, the support must not be enough if there are still struggling schools and education systems in some places. So I think maybe the government should not only make sure all schools of equal resources but they should also make sure colleges are being fair in their acceptance rates, so everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. However the acceptance of a person into collage, is ultimately up to the collage, so one of the solutions I think, is that schools can help eliminate the feeling in inferiority, in races and classes among schools. Because when everyone is on equal ground it is easier to feel more hopeful and motivated that you can do the same things anyone else can do. Then maybe after seeing equal performance among all races and classes, collages and schools will be more excepting to everyone.

      Delete
    4. Education inequality is an important and serious topic. A solution could be creating applications to schools and colleges that are anonymous to those who evaluate them, which could ensure that there is no bias when it comes to race and acceptance rates. Encouraging more accessible schools to be made can let people have to a better education easier.

Rape is often a subject spoken about in a whisper, but it happens all around us. 1 in 6 women American women have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, and about 1 in 33 of American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

Often rape occurs via force, rape drugs, or something else. You can't call for help when your under rape drugs because you're awake but the mind is disconnected from your body. A solution might be to ban rape drugs and crack down on sex offenders.

    3. My solution to this problem is to call the police and stop the rape. If we put the bad people in jail, rape would be less likely to occur when bad people that were convicted of rape are in jail. There should also be a law to prevent rape.

      Delete
    4. A possible solution for this problem could be to make harsher laws to punish sex offenders. Based on the causes you mentioned, making rape drugs illegal and raising the legal age for drinking can reduce the amount of people who become victims of rape. As a society, working together to make rape more commonly known would be help victims of rape feel less alone and ashamed and will influence the public to treat people better and stand up against rape.

    2. Kailey, the solutions star with the school, there are clubs and support systems that not only mentor them but help express there problem to the source. people like principles could give punishment to this to teach kids the importance of gender inequality and let them know they should treat people they want be treated, something not only people could use in this situation, but later on in life when they are in adulthood.

    3. To solve this problem, we must first look at what causes it. If we can introduce more examples of women being good leaders in politics, then the public may be less averse to the idea. This might eliminate bias in the world of politics.

    4. One solution to gender inequality in politics is changing the way things work in politics. I feel that if they change the way things run and split some jobs in half they could have more equality. There would be more jobs in defense for men and more jobs in education for women. Also women have to push themselves more to get to that point. Clinton made a big run this year in the election, so if more women can push themselves like that, they will win eventually.

  15. Obesity is a very big thing in American. But no many people deal with the problem. Over 78 million adults and 13 million kids are obese just in america. Obesity can cause major health problems such as overweight, increase risk of health disease, type 2 diabetes(high blood sugar), certain cancers and chronic conditions. And with adults and kids being obese that leads to larger beds, toilets which also includes schools that needs larger desks and sits.

    1. tresha, I think a solution for this problem is for stores to sell more healthy things, have everyone exercise more and to eat more fruits and vegetables. I understand we cannot control anybody's life but to prevent obesity, that's what we have to do.

    2. Obesity is a huge problem that is not talked about enough. There is many solutions we could have to stop this problem. Some we could have is starting programs to get kids outside and help them lose weight. We could start more programs to help kids get outside and be active and keep them healthy.

    3. To try to solve this problem, it's good to look at the causes of it. Many of the cases of obesity comes from a bad lifestyle and poor education in nutrition. By educating more children about the consequences of obesity and unhealthy food and teaching them a new lifestyle altogether, it will definitely help the problem.

    4. Obesity is a problem that many people don't pay attention. I think to solve this problem we have to start teaching kids to live a healthy life at a young age. If we can teach kids to get exercise and not eat junk all day, they will grow up living a healthy lifestyle and carry that into their adult life. For adults, I think we need to make them more aware about the risks of obesity. If people understand how harmful it can be, they may be willing to change for the better.

Global Warming is happening everywhere and in the past 3 years Earth was the hottest, many scientists warned if the parts per million past 400 something will happen, but in 2015 it didn't past 400 it was at 120 and the earth was so hot the deserts were hot as the earth no one could believe it they were wondering on how the earth could get so hot. Many scientists says that global warming is happening because of human behaviors like cutting down forests, burning fuels that release heat-holding gases into the air, humans use vehicles to get to someplace and home.

    1. A solution that some people are trying to do is to stop pollution. Many people still pollute the Earth or get rid of the waste in unnatural ways that affect the Earth negatively which results in global warming. If we stop polluting and if companies help reduce how much pollution goes out onto the Earth that could really help the Earth. So if people stop polluting or at least do their best to prevent pollution it can help global warming.

    2. One way to stop Global Warming is to stop polluting but we can't just change our way of life in a snap.So i pose a solution we can't just stop pollution but we can find a way of replacing it with hydroelectric biomass and nuclear energy it could cut down on carbon emissions but it is especially hard when 160 million tons of pollutants are released every year only in the US alone.

      Delete
    3. Current things people are doing to reduce Global Warming are carpooling, taking buses instead of multiple cars, and walking or biking as an alternative to driving in order to reduce CO2 emission. Since a cause of Global Warming is deforestation, planting more native trees and making laws to reduce the amount of trees that can be cut down will help alleviate Global Warming.

      Delete
    4. One solution that is already in the process are electric cars. These cars do not use gas which reduces the amount of fossil fuels that could cause global warming. But many people need to use electric cars in order to make an impact on the increasing temperature. As you said, cutting down trees also increases global warming. One way to reduce the amount trees being cut down is through the building of houses. Many areas are cleared out for houses while there are still many other lots and houses that are for sale. If we reduce the amount of lots we are clearing out, we will reduce the amount of trees being lost also.

  17. Gender inequality is something which women have to encounter all around the world. My most recent evidence was what happened in 2014. March 2014, Illinois administrators at Haven middle School in Evanston sent a letter home. In the letter, it restated the dress code. Mainly the letter was targeting female students. The letter stated that the clothes which girls were wearing to school was to distracting to boys. Girls were restricted to wear leggings, yoga pants, shorts and much more. The letter also stated that the lack of boys concentration in school was directly blamed on girls. This is one of the recent evidence that shows gender inequality.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think it should be a law that anything that gets banned for girls has to get banned for boys. So if wearing shorts for girls is distracting the boys then ban shorts for both girls and boys. But boys shouldn't be distracted from that because they shouldn't be focused on stuff like that. They should be focused on school.

      Delete
    2. One solution I would suggest is making those who create these rules and others aware of how these rules affect everyone. There could be different ways of showing that this is unfair for girls. A solution which has already been used and is still being used is school uniforms for both girls and boys. This way boys and others cannot say that girls' clothing are distracting if the school officials pick the uniform.

      Delete
    3. I think that girls should not be held responsible for boys actions or thoughts. No one wants to be hot during the day so banning shorts and other clothing is not the way to do this. Banning these types of clothing can cause a bigger distraction that they originally did. A solution could be either a schools uniform or a dress code that applies to both genders.

      Delete
    4. I believe dress codes should be equal between boys and girls. When girls get dress coded because you can see their shoulders or bra strap it's unbelievable. We shouldn't have to worry about what boys think or say when we are wearing these types of clothes. I believe we shouldn't have such strict rules on what we wear in school.

Michael Vick, a famous football player, had dog fighting matches at a property purchased in Surry County, Virginia. He would buy the dogs from Virginia and other states. He also became a registered dog breeder. He would test the dogs in fights then he shot, electrocuted or hung the ones who did not perform well. In 2007 Peace, Phillips, and Vick executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well. By various methods drowning, hanging, and slammed at least one dog's body to the ground. That is just one example of animal abuse.

    1. thepetfam101, I know of solutions like laws and plocice and animal society investigations to hunt people like this down, and later free the burdened animal. and there have been solutions like companies from the humane society to help find and rescue the poor animals who are abused. I feel putting together a task force to find animals who have been deserted and another team to find them homes. and there are veterinarians who do these kind of things, just needs to be upped.

      Delete
    2. I think the government should pass laws preventing animal abuse. Other solutions include thoroughly vetting people to see if they should be allowed to own pets or breed them. We should raise awareness of this topic but it is one that people rarely talk about. Abusing an animal is like abusing a child or a spouse. One of the biggest places to abuse animals are zoos and other places that display creatures.

      Delete
    3. I think that one way to prevent animal abuse is to treat it like human abuse, both physical and mental. This could help because we think of abuse as a serious problem, and if it is treated like human abuse, we would be taking it more seriously and it would be solved better.

      Delete
    4. One solution to help stop animal abuse, is to create bigger punishments. Using the Mike Vick example, He went to prison for like 1 or 2 years, and after he was released he was still allowed to play football. He at least should not have been allowed in the NFL. If more punishments are created, people will be more scared to get caught up in animal abuse incidents. If this became reality, one negative solution is that people won't agree with the punishments. For example, if someone accidentally hit an unleashed dog with their car, and were fined for it. The might take the incident to court and try to sue.

    4. I think that one possible solution is to stop having such major media coverage for weeks and weeks after the attack. Right when it happens, it's reasonable to talk about it in the news for a couple of days, but more than that, it turns these people who nobody previously knew about into temporary celebrities. This inspires some people of the internet, causing a cycle of school shootings that is increasing in rate.

    2. Tennisman, I think you got the basic layout of the chaos that ensued in Europe in the 1940's and I think that a few simple solutions could end this problem. First off, I think nuclear power should be limited to only a source of energy, and obviously to keep those in shape. If nuclear power was limited, some of the worlds largest nuclear arsenals, Like Russia and The United States, it could actually turn the world for the better. Like with the recent event in North Korea, North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un closed down his missile testing site, attempting to take a turn for the better and end the Korean war on April 27 of this year. Secondly, if each nation had Competent leaders who act rationally, wars would become uncommon and lastly, negotiations. If one nation wants something from another, they should negotiate and make something they both would enjoy. I do think you could have put more information, but otherwise I said you did fairly well.

    3. Unfortunately, sometimes war is the only answer to saving our freedom and democracy. Many things can be done to prevent war however. If we develop alliances with other countries, they won't feel the need to attack. We can't be allied with every country though. We could have better protection to help save our country and allies. This way if war is waged, we have many or enough countermeasures to save us. However one cause of this solution could be that other countries get scared of the United States building up military, so they will attack.

WWII wasn't for independence, but there's ways it could have been prevented with laws, treaties and maybe we could instate War laws with the other countries such as North Korea. We could limit the type of weapons to use like the atomic bomb dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki or nuclear bombs like North Korea is Manufacturing and threatening other countries making them want to attack North Korea.

People died left and right some from opiates and meth and crack. People don’t care what is dose to them is about the high and that's all that they care about. In 2016 15,446 people died from heroin overdose and again in 2016 20,145 from synthetic opioids and methadone. Drugs like depressant leave people slow and tired and sometimes when they passout they don’t wake up and drugs like cocaine and crack will make people act erratically and fast like when kids eat too much candy and are bouncing off of walls and it’s the same thing for adults and teens but when kids have a crash and sleep they wake up because there is no real danger but for drug users some time they lose energy and then they faint and don’t wake up.

    3. Tyler that seems more like a police check. Jason is right in that people take drugs for the high that they take them because there fun and that they are doing this because it is fun and peer pressure and they are forced into it. People take drugs for the high in fact in 2016 64,070 people overdosed and it was probably because they thought it was fun or they were peer pressure into it.

      Delete
    4. There are many anti-drug movements that have or are happening now. The problem is that drug dealers don't care about their customers. Therefore Drug dealers are the root of the problem. It is hard to even get someone to admit that they do drugs. So if you cant stop them then stop the dealers themselves. One way we can do this is by running a background check on patients before giving them prescribed drugs. This could work because many dealers fake injuries or illnesses to get their drugs. By running a background check they can see their past visits and what drugs they were prescribed. They will be able to tell from then number of times they went to the hospital and if they were prescribed drugs during their visits if they are their for the drugs.

    5. I think that whoever makes the drug should make them less addictive but still just as helpful or even more helpful. They should make any kind of drug taste horrible. Some drugs like some kinds of advil have a hard shell that taste like a flavor of a candy which some people will then take more and more because of how good it tastes. So reducing the flavor on drugs and making them taste nasty will decline the amount of overdoses.

In general guns only lead to violence and great amounts of loss to people.

  23. Education in 2018 has issues that include costs of education. One current example is in New York City. 40% (27,000) kindergarten children aren't attending the schools in the neighborhood in which they reside. Although many believe that the students who don't attend their neighborhood schools don't attend them because of racial isolation, the cost can be the issue. The costs of education based on the income you have also affects the students that don't attend neighborhood schools. The government gives less funds to schools in low-income areas. But the funding is only about 1% of the government's spending. If they were to attend, they'd be isolated because of their income. When the children who don't attend their neighborhood schools relocate, their spots are filled by students of lower-income.

    2. One way to make the costs of education cheaper could be getting more funding from the government. What the government spends right now on education is much much less than what it is spending on military exploits, and while that is important, the amount of money being spent in that area compared to things such as education is ridiculous. Changing taxes in order to have free education could also be beneficial.

    3. Kaylynn, this is a huge issue around the country and it is unfair to these children to miss out on a full education just because of where they live, and their families income. I think a solution could be more government funding and more awareness. If more people were aware of this problem they could hold protests and alert the government of what they are doing. This could cause the government to support the school systems more and have more children attending school.

    4. The government should spend more money on shaping the minds of our future than buying weapons for the military because every child deserves education whether they are white or black, poor or rich, native or immigrant, straight or homosexual or girl or boy. 24. My topic is religious inequality. This means the intentional persecution of someone because of their religion. This is more common than you would think. China recently enacted laws allowing them to deem a building illegal and demolish it. This happened to one church who now has no place for it's 50,000 members to go. Along with this there were over 1.7 million people killed in an event called the crusades. The crusades were an attempt by the catholic church to gain the land most Christians consider holy (that is Jerusalem) from the Muslims. This is yet another instance of not understanding another religion. Most of the men in the 8 separate trips of at minimum 100,000 people had never saw a Muslim.

    2. Devouts of the various religions across the globe should learn to understand. Most religious violence stems from a zealot's misunderstanding of a religion (their own or another's), causing them to believe that another religion is an evil virus of Satan. Most of the major religions believe in the same core principles of peace, love, and forgiveness, and if they understood this, they probably wouldn't be so eager to pick up their torches and pitchforks every time they see each other.

    3. James, this is a great topic to choose because in the U.S we have religious freedom so many people don't pay attention to religious inequality. I think one solution is reducing power from some leaders. China shouldn't be allowed to destroy a church for a weak reason. Also, people should understand more about a religion before going around and hating against it. Ignorance is a big issue contributing to religious inequality. We need to start to pay attention to issues like this more in our lives.

  25. Poverty by government definition is based on how much a person, family would need to pay for food. They assume we spend most of our budget on food. Poverty is everywhere including the US. In the UK of Redbridge outer London there is a family of four. In this family is a mother, Jennie and her three sons. Mark, 13 got meningitis when he was a baby. He has Perthe disease and is visually impaired. Jennie left her work to care for him. Jennie was a hairdresser but then switched to a part time job when she started a family. He cannot walk long distance because of the disease. Michael, 11 is visually impaired with no peripheral(side) vision and Jordan he is 16 he has ADHD. Jennie and her family have been living on and off in different locations. In 1999 she left her husband and her family moved to a women's refuge. All four of them shared a room for 10 months. They never fully stayed in one place. She was the only one capable of making income and because of her situation she developed insomnia and stress. From a survey in 1999 from PSE 2:3 single families are in poverty. Even though Jennie and her family are from the UK this shows us how bad the poverty is around the world.

I know there are soup kitchens and they help out, but that isn't a valid place to stay. Create more homeless shelters, and give them a normal place to live until they can get back on their feet and get a job if possible. In places like Sudan and the rest of the WANA (West Asia and North Africa) countries, they only use around 20 liters of water. In America, an average shower sprays out 2 gallons of water per minute, while those in Sudan are showering with only 8 cups of water. 8 cups! The water isn't even purified, fresh, or clean, and may be filled with bacteria and tainted brown. But for people like Kim Kardashian, who are constantly fined for over using too much, it isn't a big deal because she is a millionaire. A solution that may work best with the fining, is jail time. If the person goes over the amount so many times, and get fined many times; they should get jail time, and just maybe this will stop wealthy people that can get out of almost everything with money.
