You have been researching a societal problem of your choice, and you should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.

In one paragraph:

explain what the societal problem is, and
include your most recent evidence (example or statistics) to prove its existence (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).

  1. The societal problem I have been researching is climate change or global warming. At the rate we're going at, by 2100 climate models suggest there will be 700 parts per million of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. That's double the present levels and triple the pre-industrial revolution levels. The snow cover across Earth has decreased by about 10% since the 1960s. Sea levels increased about four to ten inches in the 20th century. The 2016 climate was 2.2 degrees fahrenheit more than before the industrial revolution. 97% of climatologists (climate scientists) believe that this is partially if not entirely the outcome of human activity, specifically the emission of fossil fuels into the atmosphere.

    1. Fossil fuels are dangerous but they can also be good. I agree that global warming as been a problem over the years. Maybe a solution could be try not to use fossil fuels as a danger but try and find a good use for it.

    2. This problem that you have proposed has a lot of solutions but many don't by themselves work. One solution that I would propose would be to complete but slowly stop the use of fossil fuels. These would be replaced by renewable energy sources like solar and wind. This comes with a problem though that being the loss of jobs. That's why we need to train people who lost there jobs to take on the new jobs provided by renewable energy. Another solution would be to limit the amount of co2 where putting into the atmosphere. This would only work if we imposed the law that I stated prior. These solutions along with many more reforms would aid in then ending of this problem.

    3. I agree that global warming has been a problem. One solution could be to try and not let so much greenhouse gases out in the air. They can absorb heat and radiation. So if they limit how many greenhouses there are there might be less gas. I also agree that people should try and not use fossil fuels.

    4. I believe that climate change and global warming is a huge problem. Pollution can also have a huge impact on both of those things. By releasing gases and oils out onto the Earth it will have a lot of damage and cause Earth to have very many problems including climate change and global warming. Global warming and climate change can occur naturally but humans also impact what happens. We can help prevent some climate change and global warming by taking the right precautions with oils and gases. If we try to keep the environment clean and free of pollution we can help prevent global warming and climate change.

  2. Domestic violence is when there is violent or aggressive behavior in homes, towards partners or children. There are three types of domestic violence. Emotional, physical, and sexual. Every 1 in 3 women have been victims, every 1 and 4 men have been victims, and about 34 out of 1000 children are abused. Every year about ten million people are abused, both women and men. Women between 18 and 24 are the most commonly abused. There are many causes to domestic violence, for some people it's the alcohol and drugs. For other people it has to do with just growing up in a aggressive environment and learning to accept the violent behavior and thinking its okay. Research shows that people aren't just born aggressive or violent, people are taught those ways.

    1. Jada, I agree with your opinion of saying domestic violence is a big problem. Some solutions that might work when put into action could be making homes safer places and making sure women know what to do in the case that domestic violence occurs towards them. Based on research, domestic violence is a big problem that can be prevented by stopping aggressiveness at a young age.

    2. I don't know if we have many solutions currently, I think most of them involve admittance to a place of rehabilitation, or to another home. But most people don't want to tell others when they experience things like this, so it will be hard to spot. The government could be trying to make harsher penalties for things like this, which might help, but it would be important to remember as you said, that these people aren't born like that. So the government can also focus on making sure every school can afford a social worker or helper of sorts, to help spot the problem early. A possible solution would be for schools to get more involved, because this is an important time in a persons life, and their experienced will affect the rest of their life. So schools should have many people to make sure the kids are being treated right in their homes, or like doctors should check up on kids to, to prevent this problem from worsening. I think its important that these people are actively seeking these kids and people out, because most of these problem are kept to a person because they are scared share it with the world.

    3. Jada, I agree with what you are saying about domestic violence. I think a solution may be to spread more awareness about domestic violence or to keep a strong romantic relationship based off research. Also I say if u are needing to leave a home with a abusive boyfriend, try to stay in a relatives home or try to find a domestic violence shelter around.

    4. Jada, I think that a great solution for domestic violence is to put your own needs before the other persons. A lot of people in these types of relationship probably don't know how to get out of them. The best thing would be to talk to someone about what's going on. It will be hard, but it will be for the best.

  3. Terrorism, when a person goes out and does a terrible violent act for his or her own reasons, has been, and is still a problem. Throughout the years, people have been committing terrorist acts for years but it has gotten worse as of late. With the shooting in las vegas, were over 50 people were killed, the florida shooting were 17 high schoolers were killed, and in 2016 40 were killed in a mass shooting in a nightclub located in virginia. Not to mention, over 2,000 were killed worldwide in 2016 by terrorist attacks, and 811 in 2015 just in america, from march to november. And all those numbers were from just a couple years ago.

    1. Terrorism, I agree, is a major problem. However, based on the name, the purpose is not to directly harm people. It is, rather, to scare people. So I think that a major solution would be putting things in perspective. If everybody recognized that the 2,000 people killed in 2016 by terrorists is not much compared to the over 40,000 people killed by car accidents in 2016, it might help people get over their fear because fear, of course, is the purpose of terrorism.

    2. Terrorism is a very pressing issue in our current society; solutions that have been suggested currently include increasing armed guards in public places, increasing the legal age to own a gun, background checks for potential gun buyers, and metal detection systems in public places such as schools. Based on your research, I think people should be trained to react faster to terrorist situations so fewer people are killed, and background checks should be stricter so that people who pose a threat to society aren't given access to guns.

    3. I believe that terrorism is very big problem. I feel like people just need to be more prepared for it and not over exaggerate what's happening. People overthink thing and are either over prepared or under prepared for what's happening. I think the best thing for people to understand is that we all do bad things even if there bad or wrong to do.

  4. The societal problem I am researching is Terrorism. Terrorism is a huge problem around the world. From 9/11 to the unabomber this is a huge problem. Just in 2014 alone there was over 32,000 deaths due to terrorism. Just in one day in 2001 there was over 3,000 deaths on September 11th. Now you here about terror in another country or here in the United states on the news once a week. The one terror group that is still going on big time right now is Isis but it is slowly going down though, Trump just reported that the US just killed five of the Isis leaders last week or the week before. This is why terrorism is a problem in today's society.

    1. Terrorism is been a problem ever since those who feel like they are in the right, and/or expressing their beliefs. Yet in a violent way. That in which is certainly not the answer. Though Isis is slowing down an making it's way through in a sluggish manner piece by piece they killed 2043 people in 43 countries in 2016. We need to restrict military weapons to the public and only to the militarized (Terror groups don't count as "Militarized") and locate the hideout and give them the harshest punishment possible.

      Delete
    2. I agree that terrorism is an important problem today. There have been solutions of prevention, for example with terrorism through gun violence, where many say that education on the subject and increased mental health tests will solve the problem on its own. However, many people also say that this may only work with certain laws that limit who can own a gun, and that similar laws may also work to prevent large terrorist groups similar to ISIS from forming.

    3. I agree terrorism is a huge problem. I know that one solution has been that in airports you can no longer go to a gate without having a ticket and going through security. I don't really know how much of a difference this has made but it is a step closer to helping. If we make stricter laws about terrorism it doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to stop because people will still do what they have been doing without thinking of the consequences.

  5. My societal problem is the Assad Regime this problem has been recent in April 4 2017 there was a chemical attack. There is evidance pointing towards the Assad regime behind the attack. Also from November 2012 to 2013 40,000 people have died beause of protests to there nation about a change in there politics. There is also a civil war going to in Syria to this day and 400,000 people dead and 500 children dead since 2012. If that is not a societal problem then I don't know what is a problem.

    1. Cameron, I agree that the Assad Regime is a big problem in today's society. I know the United States are trying to take action to rid Syria of this conflict. Unfortunately it is very hard for the United states to do much without getting pulled into war. The US could try to make a new nuclear/chemical weapons treaty, but that would only work if bigger consequences would be applied to anyone who broke it. The most logical solution would be to try to let the war play out, and not put the US in danger. The government could figure out what to do from there.

      Delete
    2. The Assad regime is a problem, but the problem will only get worse if we apply our previous to solutions to conflict in the middle east. For example, the invasion of Afghanistan only lead to deeper instability and destruction inside it today. Airstrikes against belligerent terrorist groups are also ineffective, as they might deal collateral damage with innocent civilians. Instead, we should focus on diplomatic solutions, like sanctions. This, along with further counter terrorism initiatives, could help stop the Civil War in Syria.

    3. Cameron,
The Assad regime is still a problem. But if we try to make some sort of law or reform that will stop the Assad regime, it will just get worse. I believe there is no way to solve this, the U.S. will have to wait it out and have the Assad regime go away.

      Delete
    4. It's true that the Assad Regime is a problem. With the death count, it could take some time to recover from this. If we let the war play out, nothing would happen to the US and we would be safe from any other problems that might come upon us.

  6. The societal problem I am researching is Poverty in America. Poverty is a huge problem because many people don't have a home, clothing, or food, or other basic necessities. The unfairness is that more fortunate people can get those things in the snap of a finger. In 2007, 13.3 million American children lived in poverty and by 2013 that number grew to 16 million. There are 23.5% of New Yorkers that live in extreme poverty neighborhoods. 18.5 million people reported deep poverty in 2017. This is a very concerning problem and it will continuously get worse if it does not get helped

    1. Some solutions that can be used are making sure kids and adults are more aware of people that can help them. This includes therapist, counselors, police, and even friends. People need to be more aware of these situations and if they are being abused they need to know the problem can be fixed by asking for help.

      Delete
    2. One solution that is already in the process are programs which help donate food to those in need, including food pantries. A solution that could gradually cause less people to be homeless is a program which asks for wood or other items that are no longer used in your homes in order to build homes for the homeless. This program can also ask for some water bottles and other necessities. This way, those who are homeless can worry less about finding a home and more about food and water. This solution could work better if put into action with others because the more people who are helping those who need the homes, the quicker they will get their homes.

    3. A solution to this problem could be to have more help for people that need it. Because they need somewhere to sleep and food and water. So these places could have these things that they need that they have not had in a while.

    4. I know of solutions such as shelters, local food pantries and soup kitchens, and charities. if we can organize groups were they can feel welcome and fed together this could help local communities. but we also need to make this a bigger effort and should help organize groups to guide kids and adults to get the life they need so they get those necessities themselves they way the deserve.

  7. Illegal immigration is the illegal entry of a person into a country. Today there are 12.5 million illegal immigrants living in the United states. That is 1.5 million more than in the year 2015. Illegal immigrants make up about 15 percent of the total United states population, but they only pay 2% of the total taxes in the untied states. Also Illegal immigrants cost United states 135 billion a year, and that numbers is only going up because each year about 700,000 illegal immigrants enter the untied states.

    1. Good job but some attempted or in the process solutions for your problem are having a stronger boarder patrol yet people still get by,one in the process right now is a wall being built on the boarder so people can't climb or dig over to get into the country with out having a passport or citizenship. Some solutions that would work better together would be if america and other countries worked together to stop immigrants migrating into each others country. A solution that may work would be is increasing security and maybe charged other countries for their citizens entering without any documentation.

    2. Ryan, I agree illegal immigration is a big problem to the United States. The United States could up their coastal security, but that would only work if enough people would do it. One of the things the US could do is instead of spending all their money on the immigrants, spend that same money on training personnel to patrol the US coasts for immigrants and not let them in illegally. President Trump himself proposed a solution that some sort of border could be build on the edge of the US to block illegal immigrants from sneaking in.

      Delete
    3. Ryan, I definitely agree that it is a huge problem that the US and many other countries face, but some people have brought up solutions that make people think they sound kind of racist (NO ONE ABOVE, THEY ARE ALL GOOD) even though their intentions were good. Donald Trump, for example, wants to build a wall on the Border to keep out illegal immigrants, and he is one of the most controversial presidents, he has good intentions, yet he makes poor ways of saying them. I think that putting a wall in between us make the world not really enjoy us, and a solution I think is creating a sort of test that permits or denies access to the US and if they pass it, they get full citizenship, but if they fail, they'd have to try again another time.

  8. There has been more deaths by drugs in 2016, than death by guns in the vietnam war. The pain of the outcome and what can happen to someone, have you ever lost a family member do to drugs? They don’t have to be the one who has taken them, they could have been killed by someone on them. The sadness ,pain, anger, wrath, and all sorts of feelings. When people become a teen, they become the most curious. They try what comes their way, they want to try new things. That includes drugs and alcohol, scene their brain is not fully developed they have the most chance of getting addicted. More than 58% of 12th graders had consumed alcohol and nearly 24% had used illicit drugs in the past year. There have been 123800 deaths by lung cancer,90600 deaths by chronic lung disease, and 86800 deaths by coronary heart disease. People have been dying by drugs with the most change of percentage being from 1999-2016. The most deaths from overdosing are Opioids going from 0 deaths in 1999-20145 deaths in 2016, Heroin going from 2300 deaths in 1999-15446 deaths in 2016, and finally,Natural and semisynthetic opioids going from 2500 deaths in 1999-14427 deaths in 2016. Using drugs or alcohol deaths on vehicles mostly are motor vehicle deaths at 17196, Homicide and injury purposely caused by other person at 11609, and Suicide and self injury at 8476. And the drugs and alcohol can bring out the worst, they can bring out the 7 deadly sins insides of us. But there are ways to prevent that and get the same feeling as if you were using them. Reiki is a medical treatment from Japan, but it doesn’t always involve touching. Reiki is spiritual energy, what it does is it takes energy from the universe and puts it into another, like a tree, but the energy can be taken from other objects, and when it is put into the body, all you can feel is warmth and happiness. Illusions can make you see what drugs can show you, but not the exact same way. Drugs are a virus, and we are being poisoned by them, but we can destroy them. By taking therapy and other treatments you can have a clean body. Getting counseling, talking to an adult, going to a hospital, or if a teen or younger contact kids helpline, these places can help save the body from being destroyed by the virus called drugs and alcohol. So I repeat this again there has been more deaths by drugs in 2016 than deaths by guns in the vietnam war!

    2. You have stated a lot of solutions in this piece that I think have a potential of working. I think the most valuable solution is to seek help from adults of counselors. This can show the person with the problem that they are not alone and that there is hope. Most people are afraid to ask for help when it comes to taking drugs or being addicted to alcohol.

    3. One solution that might be attempted is looking at why the teens use drugs in the first place. And, reading your paragraph, you have made it clear why that is: teens are very curious. So one thing that I think could help is improving education on drugs. We already do this, but I think that drug education could still be improved. Additionally, we could try better to stop drug dealers with methods other than jailing (I say this because the US jails are already overpopulated). For instance, we could work on better detecting drug dealers, and then arresting them and using some other means of punishment.

    7. I think helping drug users with counseling is a band-aid but educating them so they know what they are and the danger they pose is a great solution. We shouldn't let the small fish go just because we got the big fish. We should catch all off the drug-dealing fish. We do need a better criminal justice system because jail is kind of old and you can always get off on parole so maybe have them do something for the government. Set up more foundations to help people who have lost people to drug related deaths or accident. We could try to rehabilitate drug dealers.

  9. My societal problem is gun violence I am going to be talking about the mass shootings with firearms. In 2017 October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas at least 59 people were killed and 525 were injured. There was over 390 mass shootings in 2017. The shooter's room was on the 32nd floor on the hotel. He was in room 135 of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The police found the shooter in his hotel room dead and that he had killed himself. The shooter Stephen Paddock's body was found in the hotel room were the police found 23 firearms found in the hotel room.

    1. Gun violence is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed in today's society. There have already been attempts to regulate guns, and I think that if done properly, could be effective. Laws to make buying guns more difficult are a possibility, as well as tests to be sure of mental health. I also suggest that ammunition be illegal to have with your gun, that it be stored on ranges and other places. Not in your own home.

    2. Gun violence has been a big problem over years and its gotten worse. There's been a lot of shooting's over the last year. Like the one your talking about, one in Florida and a bunch at different schools. I think a solution could be that police officers and other jobs that you need a gun for people should be allowed guns. If less people owned a gun there would be less people getting killed during concerts or school or anywhere really.

    1. Justin, although we are working towards converting the whole world to renewable energy, that solution will only work with the help of others. This solution may take a long time since at the time fossil fuels are more efficient for production. Right now though we can just work towards getting all states to set a goal to convert to renewable energy. Using electric cars is a good example of a way to covert. This is because cars are one of the biggest problems when it comes to climate change.

The time might seem so far ahead our children and us as adults are still going to suffer warmer temperatures, lack of animals, plants and all other problems that are in the reality that is Climate Change. To help prevent this we need to find other sources for our power. Instead of fossil fuels we use wind power and solar power. Even if this doesn't happen we need to use less gases in factories and coal, the list can go on and on until we have a healthy, stable earth once again.

    1. While much of the world's medical research is being poured into developing cures/treatments for all the different kinds of cancer, there is still more work to be done. Due to the chaotic nature of cancer as well as our limited resources, simply treating or curing cancers will be a difficult issue to tackle for a long time. However, stopping the tumours from developing in the first place would be much easier. While some cancers are unavoidable, many are caused by unhealthy habits, such as lung and liver cancer. Most countries have weak limits on carcinogens, such as smoking and alcohol. They are usually age limits, and even then they aren't always enforced, such as in Japan where teens are almost never charged with underage drinking or smoking. Stricter laws regarding unhealthy, carcinogenic habits and substances could limit the amount of people who develop cancer, as well as make certain kinds of cancer a thing of the past.

    2. I agree that cancer is a societal problem that continues to grow. One solution that might help reduce the amount of genetic cancer patients could be to not pass the gene on to your offspring. In addition, you could have people be tested more often so that if someone does have the disease, it can be caught early on and stopped quickly. This would also make people more aware of the societal problem.

  12. The societal problem that I am researching is pollution. Some evidence that I found to prove pollution exists is, in 2014, 7,000 gallons of toxic chemicals leaked from chemical tanks that belonged to the Eastman Chemical Company. Those chemicals leaked into the Elk River in Charleston, West Virginia. The residents could not bathe or drink for 1 week because their water was contaminated with all the chemicals. Another piece of evidence that I found is, there is a mass of plastics floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is estimated to have about 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, and weighs up to 88,000 tons. It also is more than twice the size of Texas. That is how I know pollution is a societal problem that exists today.

    1. Hannah, some fixes to this problem that are happening now are to recycle more and use the landfills left. I know that if we recycle the things that should be recycled that would help a lot. Another thing to go along with that is to stop wasting things like shampoo in the shower and shorten down shower time so not so much water is wasted. One solution I can offer for chemical spills/leaks is to try to make the chemical less toxic for animal life if it contaminates the water.

      Delete
    2. There could be more regulations on factories and chemical companies to make sure there isn't anything toxic leaching into the environment, with heavy penalties if breached. Placing penalties on these things that do damage to the environment could make corporations more careful about it. One solution to the plastic problem is first looking to decrease the toxic materials that we are throwing into the environment. We could start making more plastics out of biodegradable materials, like hemp plastic. Then we can focus more on cleaning up what we have already done.

      Delete
    3. One solution to this problem would be to recycle all things that can be recycled and to throw all the trash in the garbage not on the ground or ocean. If everyone does that then the pollution amount would decline.

    4. Pollution is a huge problem everywhere in the world ultimately not talked about enough. This would definitely make our environment less polluted.

Maybe one solution, put into action with others, could be eating less meat, being vegetarian, vegan or just working on wasting less. A solution I can offer is definitely not wasting food, and eating less meat. Your research shows that people are killing way too many animals, because we take the for granted, and i think that this can be fixed, if people work together.

    3. Jordan_Russo, good topic! A proposed solution is better vetting owners for criminal histories and maybe do checks on the animal like what social workers do with children but instead for animals. A big place of animal abuse are zoos or other places that hold animal life. The government could pass a law to help prevent animal abuse. They could crack down on punishments. I mean if someone had a history of violence, don't give them a pet.

    4. A solution to this problem could be that you can only kill or have a certain amount of animals. This would make it so people could still make a money but their would be an amount that can kill that is safe.

    5. Yes I agree animals are most of our main source of food and we abuse it so much its damaging populations. one thing I Think would be an amazing Idea is meatless mondays Yes I LOVE meat but for a day I would be willing to go without it.

  14. My societal problem is racism. Racism has been going on for a very long time. It's a huge problem that needs to be over. Some of the victims of racism is Emmett Till, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and lots of more people were victims of racism. The NAACP is a large civil rights organization. The KKK was a group of people that didn't like blacks, LGBT, and more. Emmett Till was murdered for being accused of flirting with a white female cashier. The husband later kidnapped, beat, and shot Emmett on August 28, 1955. All these people are victims, and they shouldn't have been. The problem needs to stop.

    1. Like you said, a solution that is in the process of being a solution to racism is the NAACP. I am thinking that a possible solution of racism could be to overall raise more awareness about it, because some people might now be aware that racism still is a problem in today's society. For example make speeches that talk about how racism is still a problem today. Like Rosa Parks did when she boycotted the buses. That eventually caused change.

      Delete
    2. I think one of the most effective solutions can be awareness. This can open peoples eyes and show them that they are no better than anyone else. I also think that a lot of racism comes from public schools. Children don't always know how wrong some of the stuff they say is. It should be taught more in school about how everyone is equal no matter your race.

      Delete
    3. I agree that racism should come to a halt, but how are we to do so? Your proposed solutions can work, but I think some people will still do it because of how they are. A simple solution for this is for people to just get over it, it doesn't matter that they are different. On the scale they are humans just like them, and they should just ignore the people they don't like. If they talk to you, sure, give them a short conversation, and they part your ways, and keep racist thoughts to yourself, because on the same note, they could very much hate you and just kept it to themselves.

    4. Racism is a pretty bad problem we have in the US. We need to stop it. When someone says that whites are superior to blacks, makes things even worse for blacks and other colored people. My solution is to stop making fun of black people by making racial remarks a finable thing for blacks and whites to keep people from being a racist little brat.

  15. My societal problem is drug abuse. Drug abuse is the habit of taking addictive or illegal drugs. Drug abuse is on the rise, from 1978-2001 the amount of emergency department drug mentions for cocaine has gone up by approximately 189,900. Just in 2016 20,145 people died from synthetic Opioid overdose. In 2010 less than 5,000 people died from synthetic Opioid overdose. The percents are increasing, each year more and more people die from drug overdose each year. This is a big problem in the US and other countries.

    1. I don't know any solutions that people have already tried, but I know that many people who do drugs get arrested. I think one solution could be make a law about not being able to sell or purchase drugs after a certain amount of times unless it's prescribed by a doctor. A solution that I think will work would be to make a law. Personally I think it's the best solution.

    2. Some drug addicts don't want to ask for help because they are embarrassed to or scared to admit they have an addiction. These people need to know they have help from people. One solution that I could give is that drugs should be harder to receive. They shouldn't be as easy to get as they are now. We need to make more harsher laws against drugs and the people that are using them illegally.

      Delete
    3. I believe that it should not be as easy as it is to get these drugs. I feel that people can just call up a friend and be able to get these drugs you should have to go through a lot of tests in order to know that people are not abusing these drugs. I know that nowadays you have to have a special prescription in order to get these drugs but its still not safe enough.

  16. Littering is a big problem. I lived in NYC and littering over there is a big problem. One big thing over there is littering in the subway. The trash goes in the train tracks. Since the trash has been going in the train tracks, it had started 638 train track fires. Police were giving tickets for littering. In 2012, they issued 669 tickets. In 2017, it decreased to 101 tickets. Since the tickets went down, more fires have happened. So even though the tickets went down the littering kept happening. It's showing that littering is still a problem.

    1. Littering is still an on-going problem that many of us humans still do not think about enough. Solving this problem may be complicated as this also involves human behavior and instincts. To solve this problem, I suggest that putting more disposable bins around very public places like previously stated, the subway. We can also offer programs and volunteer positions to help clean the litters of people, especially in busy places like in the cities. Another way is to provide reusable containers or bags when purchasing something so that there will be a decrease in thinking that these wrappers or bags are actually trash.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I agree, littering is pretty obnoxious in NYC because people are lazy, and their laziness is causing problems. I think police officers should keep giving tickets more because, you said that peoples littering causes train track fires, and that is dangerous. I think there should be community service to pick up the trash in the subway, because if people really cared about getting to work, they would help. I also think that there should be more trash cans so people can throw their garbage away. I think community service and police tickets will keep the train tracks clean and safe.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you that littering is a big deal. I think we should put more trash cans out around places rather than one trash can so far away from the other one. We should also have more cops out patrolling areas that are highly populated and littering happens there a lot often.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you. NYC is probably the place that has the most littering because so many people travel their. The thing about tickets is some people just throw them on the ground and that causes more problems. I feel like there should be a way where at a certain hour of a day the subways should be shut down and cleaned so fires don't start.

  17. The societal problem I'm researching is the constant debate over gun rights. This problem has been in debate for a very long time, back to when ourfounding fathers wrote the second amendment. We are fighting over whether we should stick to our founding fathers way or we change it based on our change of firearms and minds. In 2016, Ricci Brandon shot hhis wife in a drup store parking lot. Then, Anthony Antell Jr., who was with his family at the time, grabbed hhis own gun out of his truck and confronted Brandon. Then, Brandon slapped Antell's gun out of his hand and killed him. Antell put is own life at stake to protect the rest of the people at the scene. I am pro guns and do think that everyone has a right to own one, but they also have the responsibilities that come with guns. In 2015, 256 children shot themselves because they found unsafe guns, 83 of those chhildren died.

    1. A possibility is more regular check ups to those who own guns. This way people would constantly be checked for signs of mental illness and/or intentions of causing harm to others. There could also be better safety toggles on guns so children couldn't accidentally fire one off without proper knowledge of how to handle one. I don't think restricting access to guns is the way to go however, as other violent acts would increase in return, and people couldn't utilize guns in self defense well.

      Delete
    2. Some say that simply banning all guns would cut down gun violence. Of course, this would never work, as there are always a hundred ways to obtain something illegal in this country. However, many have suggested that the removal of military grade weapons, such as assault rifles, from the civilian market could cut down gun violence. This solution has worked in other countries, such as Australia. A mass shooting in 1996 at Port Arthur, Australia left 35 dead and 23 wounded. In response, the Australian government banned the sale of assault rifles, and the nation hasn't had a shooting of this scale since. This is just one of many possible solutions to gun violence.

      Delete
    3. What I think is yes pro guns but the laws themselves need to be stricter so that even a minor incident no matter how small is a nope and yes I agree with Ian regular check ups because if you find a crime seen with a bullet to an unknown gun then you found a suspect and maybe even a killer

      Delete
    4. A few years ago there was a woman who had a gun in her purse and her son found it and accidentally killed her. Gun violence is a major issue and a idea is that we do strict background checks but those don't always work. I believe that military personnel should have guns but civilians shouldn't unless they are kept very safe especially if there are children around.

  18. My societal problem that I have been researching is littering. Litter consists of trash and household toxic substances that are improperly disposed of on land or in water. The city of Los Angeles produces around 2,769 pounds of trash per person each year. There is a giant island called Garbage Island of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean that is more than twice the size of Texas. This shows that littering is a big problem and we need to do something about it as soon as possible.

    1. Wow Janiya, the fact about Garbage Island is pretty eye-opening. Littering is a common problem in our lives. I think one solution to this problem is placing more trash cans in areas. I think many people litter because there is not a close trash can so, if we put out more, then people may increase how much they put in the trash and decrease how much they leave around.

      Delete
    2. Janiya, garbage island is pretty scary considering Texas is a pretty large state and garbage island is twice the size of that. I think one solution to this problem is to recycle more and waste less things. I think that using recycling more and also making composting for our food waist and you can even put other things in there too and use it for a fertilizer for a garden. Another thing to help stop littering is placing more public trash and recycling cans around towns and cities.

      Delete
    3. The Native Americans were smart when it came to recycling. Also, the animals living on trash island eat the plastic and die. Those birds though only live there. A solution would be to clean up trash island, maybe instate a trash police who could check to make sure everything recyclable is recycled. We could also stop using throwaway bottles of water and use refillable ones like Camelbak.

    4. Littering is a common problem in our world. I think one solution could be to get rid of the island of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean. But that is most likely not going to happen. So a more realistic solution like Hannah and Kurt's. They should put out more trash cans for people to use. People should also think more about what they do with there garbage and not just put it where ever they want to.

  19. The societal problem that I am researching is nuclear weapons. This is concerning because it ruins home and places it is basically a fallout. Chernobyl is an example of a fallout. Chernobyl is where a nuclear reactor leaked and just blew up. No one can even go there without a suit because of the radiation that the explosion gives off and kills people.

    1. One solution to this problem is for countries to work on a law banning the use of nuclear weapons and the creation of them. Another solution is to have countries try and settle their fights, so there is not a reason to create weapons like nukes. If countries could just mind their own business they wouldn't get involved in all the arguments and wouldn't have fight and make weapons.

      Delete
    2. I believe that nuclear weapons are only a problem because of how people are using them. Therefore, if we make new laws that prevent people from using nuclear weapons in a harmful manner it will decrease the number of homes and places that would be destroyed by nuclear weapons.

      Delete
    3. One solution to this problem is to ban all use of Nuclear Weapons. I say this because it's putting a lot of innocent people in fear and in danger. No one should feel in danger and should feel happy of where they live.

      Delete
    4. I think that it will be hard to get rid of nuclear weapons since it is the ultimate weapon of war and not only that their are also nuclear power plants. But one solution I think will be effective in some way is to get rid of the rest of the nukes in the test sites.

  20. Terrorism is the societal problem that I'm researching. The most recent evidence I have right now is
9/11. There was more than 6,000 people injured.

    1. Terrorism is a very big issue that is very hard to solve. I know that our country, along with other countries, have been fighting this for years and have attempted multiple times to end terrorism. There have been laws in order to put a stop to it. Currently, we have military in other countries trying to stop terrorism. Although nothing has completely worked yet, I hope we can find a solution soon.

    2. From Maeve:

Previous solutions to your matter may have been background checks for immigrants, background selling guns, and better airport security.
Solutions that work well may be putting heavier security at gun shops, and having stronger background checks there, which could limit less terrorism.
A solutions may be limiting the amounts of immigrants coming in, and this would work well with more time to spend inspecting people.

    3. Terrorism is a ginormous problem that we see almost everywhere in the world today. We have taken huge steps against terrorism to try and stop it. Airport security is at a high for security and is very highly controlled so that no one can hurt anyone in the air of the United States.

  21. Marisa, hate groups have shown signs of going down in the past but are then on the rise again. The only way to properly solve this would to be enforce laws and make it a crime to be a part of a hate group. The reason this may have some problems is because our country was built on racism and you often see it in the police as well. I think the only way to solve this would be to teach the future generations about racism and to enforce laws.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hate groups is a problem. But it is legal to be in one if you don't do any crimes. It is their opinion.
Because of that the only way to fix this is to make laws.

  23. I agree that racism is a huge problem in the US. I think that there are a few solutions to racism. The first is to make laws and citations against racists acts. The second is to teach the next generation about how bad racism is

    ReplyDelete
  24. racism needs to stop, and we could implament support groups for all those who feel hated upon racistly. but if the government puts actual effort into stopping the hate and advertise this we could lower the rascim in America greatly. all though it would be hard to stop the way someone feels we can unite against them.
