As we have explored and discussed in class, human behavior has negatively impacted our planet.   Is it too late for the Earth to forgive us for the ways we have treated it?  In one paragraph:

share textual evidence from an online article of your careful choice that proves how human behavior has negatively impacted our planet,

discuss how the damages caused by the human behavior you share can be reversed, or why you think it's too late, and

at the end, paste the url of the website from which you  gathered evidence.

  1. Are you guilty of throwing a candy wrapper out your car? How about leaving a plastic bottle on the beach? I know I’ve littered before, but is littering really a problem? It definitely is, our environment is being destroyed due to the trash we don’t properly dispose of. Every year, approximately 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die due to trash in their environment. In February 2008, it was reported that there was a “plastic soup” of waste twice the size of the continental US in the Pacific Ocean, and it continues to get bigger at a catastrophic rate. Litter isn’t just a problem in the seas. Every 12 minutes, litter causes a fire somewhere in the world. Is it too late to reverse the effects of litter in our world? I certainly don’t believe so. However, every individual must make an effort to keep our planet clean. We can do that by responsibly disposing of our trash, and picking up litter when we see it.

    1. I definitely believe it can be reversed. I think it can be reversed, because all people need to do is pick up after themselves. I like your solution of if we see littering around us we should take a couple of seconds out of our day to just pick it up.

    2. I think it can be reversed I like your solution if everyone does has a part of just cleaning up outside if it's just picking up some debris in the street or anywhere. It doesn't take that long to pick it up so I think people could take a little time out of their day to just clean up a little.

  2. Plastic is everywhere. The ocean, the air, on land… Everywhere. Because of the mass amount of plastic being produced by non-renewable resources; it destroys our delicate Earth. The workers who manufacture the plastics are exposed to toxic chemicals which is very unhealthy. Plastic bags and other plastic packaging make up a huge percentage of landfills, and when littered, end up consumed by animals. This can only be reversed by having the single-use plastics become banned and enacting multiple projects to help remove the plastic debris engulfing our planet. Even then, it could be too late.

    1. I think that the mass amount of plastic being produced can't be reversed because of how much plastic now these day's aren't being recycled. They just throw the plastic outside on the floor and don't pick it up. They just put it in the trash instead of the recycling bin.Now there is a lot of animals dying because people are not picking up plastic and they just throw it anywhere they want. I don't think it would be a good idea to remove plastic and do projects on it because some people don't care and they don't want to listen about banning plastic or saving our planet. I just don't think it's the best solution for the planet to banned plastic and do projects.

    2. I think the large amounts of plastics being produced and wasted and I think it can be reversed with lots of work just because humans don't want to put it in a recycling bin it only takes a few seconds, but the plastic that's already out there may take a while to clean up.

  3. Chemicals that are used every day can cause a catastrophe and humans don't even realize it until it affects their own money. Large farms use chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides on their crops to make them perfect and grow fast. When it rains the chemicals run or dissolve into a body of water. The body of water is now contaminated killing most of the marine life that lived in it which affects us by losing fish and valuable drinking water. Also when you drive your car toxic chemicals are made getting sent into our atmosphere killing the layer that protects us from the sun. Humans could pay attention to what they’re doing to the environment by checking how and where they’re food was made or checking on how much they’re driving. Humans could figure ways out to make these changes happen and all they have to do is pay attention to what they’re doing.

  4. Oil spills are deadly. Crude oil has been washing from oceans onto beaches for over 4 years. Oil has caused a lot of damage when it is spilled in the ocean. Iit has killed many living things that live near or in the ocean. The way that we are trying to fix this major issue is that scientists are using cotton to try and clean up the oil by sucking it up with the cotton that they are using. They are genetically modifying the cotton so that it is it can soak up more oil, they do this by straightening out the little strands of cotton in the whole cotton ball, making it into a sheet.

    1. I believe the damage from this cause could be reversed if we try hard enough, but not completely. A lot of the oils are mixed with the water. But we could clean the land around the ocean from where is washed up from the waves. I believe this cause could be stopped by not dumping or spilling at all. Another solution I have is to create a more friendly way to dispose of oil and waste. Factories and companies dump their waste and oils into lakes and oceans to dispose of it. There are better ways like reusing it for another thing than dumping it into our oceans.

    2. I think the damage from this couldn't be reversed, but it could be fixed. There's no way we could totally remove all the oil from the seas and such, but we could definitely be a lot more safer with oil platforms in the oceans.

  5. Humans have greatly impacted the environment in many negative ways. The ecosystem of Earth needs to be finely balanced, and forests are essential for that. Forests cover almost 31% of land on Earth, but that number is constantly decreasing. 17% of forests have been lost in the past 50 years Humans cut down forests to clear out space for the development of agricultural fields, and to collect timber. The destruction of forests means the destruction of habitats for many species of organisms. In fact, deforestation is one of the leading causes of the decreasing population of endangered animals. Forests also act as a “carbon sink”, because they soak up carbon dioxide in the air. 15% of greenhouse gases are the result of deforestation. The excess carbon dioxide in the air contributes to climate change. This may sound catastrophic, but their is a way to help fix the problem. Many organizations fight to protect forests and create protected areas. WWF an organisation trying to combat deforestation by promoting sustainable bioenergy to reduce reliance on wood for biomass. Humans have definitely caused devastating damage to the environment, but with enough effort and awareness we can fight this problem.

    1. I agree with you that deforestation is a problem we can fight. There's still enough time that we can revert damage done to our ecosystem. However, doing this will be very tricky. As you said, there needs to be widespread awareness about this topic. Only if people know and care about this topic can we actually pose a solution. Many solutions can help this problem, but they all need a start somewhere. We can find alternatives to products made from wood, we can plant trees, we can pass zoning laws, but none of these work without awareness of the problem.

    2. I agree with your problem. It is a problem we really don't think about much. I think this problem can be reversed. We as humans have to be less gretty and be more mindful of our forests. A opinion for me would be to make more national parks. This would protect are forests and let the U.S make more money off of these national parks. Like you said we cant have a solution without everyone knowing about the problem you are right we need to spread awareness on this problem so people our more aware and thoughtful of our forests.

  6. Human behavior has changed our world in a drastic way. The bad thing about it is that we don’t realize that we are doing it! I mean, what difference does it make if I throw my Mcdonalds cup out of the car window, right? Wrong! Littering has a ton of consequences that are unrevealed. When you throw a Mcdonalds cup out of the window you harm people, the environment and property. As if that wasn’t enough negative consequences, our land looks dirty and the use of public places decreases. Would you rather use a clean bathroom or a bathroom with an old coke can laying on the ground? As defiant as this issue is, we can still try to turn the world around. The government already has penalties for when you litter. If you see someone litter you can call them in. If you call people in on littering they will have to pay the price; literally and/or figuratively. And if people realize the consequences they may stop littering which will lead to cleaner places! Also, you could join a litter clean up group where you help clean up the garbage beside the road. I know it sounds easier than it is, but if we all make an effort to try to stop littering then we can make a difference.

I think your solution is good, because if you tell someone as they are doing it they could be ashamed of themselves, and not do it again

  7. Have bright lights ever bogged down your night sleep? All around the world, bright lights shine on into the sky with almost no person ever caring about them. This is light pollution, which is excessive and unused light originating from human-made lamp fixtures. The damage to the Earth's biosphere has already been done. Many organisms use bright celestial objects in the sky to navigate throughout this tumultuous world. However, bright lights can mislead and misdirect organisms toward impending death by human activities. In addition, many light fixtures actually waste light when used. Throughout the US, external light sources cumulatively wasted 30% of their light, which amounts to around $1.7 billion in wasted electricity. This electricity is predominantly supplied from fossil fuel plants, which clearly emit fumes and greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. With all of this damage, is there any way that humanity can change its course on environmental alteration? In fact, only some of the damage caused by humans today can be reversed using currently known techniques. The organismal deaths caused may have reduced the genetic diversity in a species, which would endanger that species’ survival. Although this kind of damage is unrepairable, other kinds are certainly repairable. One option is to radically replace all light fixtures across the country with more energy efficient and more direct lighting solutions, which can reduce the light broadcasted into the sky. Although the upfront costs may be extremely expensive, long-term costs will be lower. In addition, the International Dark Sky Organization is setting up “Dark Sky Parks,” which could set an example for other states and countries willing to reduce their environmental impact. Whatever the solution, light pollution will always be a problem that keeps people up at night.

    1. Like you said, it is not going to completely fix the problem by replacing all the light fixtures with more energy efficient lights but it most definitely will minimize the light in the sky. I do like the idea of replacing the lights but that's not going to completely eliminate this problem.

    2. Interesting! As more energy efficient lighting will aid in forgiving Earth, other solutions, such as the subsidization of energy conservation solutions other than lighting that may help reduce our insatiable reliance on electricity, could cut down on the light being emitted from our homes and other locations. The solutions you mentioned won't completely fix the problem immediately, but they will help in reducing the severity and impact of light pollution since there are multiple sources of light pollution. Even if the world could tamper down on just one of these sources, the results will be beneficial over long periods of time. Anyway, great replying!

  8. Air pollution is one of the many ways that human behavior impacts our planet. Humans contribute to air pollution in multiple ways. One way that humans contribute to air pollution is with the transportation that we use. Our transportation of cars, trains, and planes emit fossil fuels into the environment. If we were to reduce the amount of pollution would decrease, but then it would lead to other problems for the environment. Without air pollution all of the smog that was preventing sunlight from entering the atmosphere would be gone, so there would be more sunlight which would lead to an increase in global warming. For this reason I believe that if humans work together to eliminate air pollution we could, but it would lead to more problems for our planet.

    1. I don´t believe this cause could be reversed but I believe we could stop cars from producing more air pollution and slow down the rate of air pollution from factories and other vehicles/ machines. For example a solution to stop cars from producing air pollution would be to drive cars that rely on electricity instead of cars the rely on gas or diesel. This would stop exhaust from being emitted into the air.

  9. Have you ever littered before? I have. Did you really know what you were doing to the environment. Human behavior is negatively impacting this planet. Littering is a huge way people are hurting our environment. Most people don’t think much of it, but it does a lot of harm to our planet. For example, excessive littering pollutes the environment, which is never a good sign. It also causes some animals to mistake litter for food and end up dying from it. The worst of all of this is the more litter people see, the more people think it’s okay to do it. All of this takes time and millions of dollars to fix. This problem is causing a huge chain affect, which can not be reversed. For that reason, I don’t think this behavior can dramatically change. Too much time and money has already been invested, therefore it it too late to save our environment from littering. When you littered did you ever think that you were polluting the environment, potentially killing an animal, taking money from the world, and inconveniencing another person?

  10. Cars, houses, appliances, and electronics all seem to be the things we need to survive. These “necessities” come from the earth’s resources. And whether it’s intentional or not, people tend to over-consume these resources. Air, water, soil, raw materials, and solar energy are some examples of resources humans use and consume. Resources can be retrieved by fishing, agriculture, extraction, mining, and cutting down. The problem is that resources are limited. Humans invest and produce more materials and products from resources than what is needed. In my opinion, we can stop overconsumption before it gets too late. If overconsumption is stopped then resources won’t be scarce.

    1. Kaylynn, I agree with you about human behavior towards over-consumption. It is very frequent that us humans do not realize that we are already taking too much than enough. Our behavior can change if we are more aware of what our daily activities are and try to modify it as much as possible. However, not everyone will try to follow this method, as in some living conditions, it might not be the top priority. If only we were to advocate in wealthier communities. This way, the less wealthy communities are able to obtain the resources that they are not able to use and a community can reach equilibrium.

The air every single animal, plant, human and etc. needs to breath in. The pollutants in the air will be rained down on land and into the ocean. Now there's water pollution. Water pollution now is poisoning the waters. The water will be used to water plants. Than these plants will be eaten by animals. Than those animals will be eaten by us. At the end, who gets hurt? Everyone. The three main pollutants which we pollute our earth with is particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ground-level ozone. These main pollutants cause severe health problems to people everywhere but mostly people that live in cities. All the pollution is affecting our earth and ourselves. We can’t fix all the problem which we have caused, due to pollution. Soon our protective ozone layer will disappear because of our actions and more problems will occur. Because of pollution, global warming is happening. The poor polar bears have no place to go! We are on the track to destroy our home. If it goes on like this, soon we will have no home?

  12. Overpopulation is an environmental, animal and human issue that is far from being solved. With the population of humans already exceeding their carrying capacity, having more then two children can have a very negative effect on our planet. With many humans mining, fishing, logging and clearing spaces for developments illegally, habitat is taken away from animals which can kill them directly. With the population expected to be exceed nine billion by 2048, many things humans take for granted (like fish) will disappear from our ecosystem. I do not believe this problem is reversible. Eating less and having fewer children could solve the issue, but with need for food and population both growing over the past one hundred year I doubt that is a cure for the issue. Overpopulation is a worldwide problem and it will take a group effort and a miracle to fix it. https://www.thoughtco.com/effects-of-human-overpopulation-127867

  13. Most people know about global warming, but ocean acidification is it’s equally evil twin. Ocean acidification is caused by the ocean absorbing 30% of all CO2. Good right? Less for the environment? No. As Ocean Portal (a division of the smithsonian) says “When water (H2O) and CO2 mix, they combine to form carbonic acid (H2CO3).” That acid has increased ocean acidity by 30%! Usually the acid absorbed is offset by bases (a substance that is the opposite of an acid) carried off of dissolved rocks. This is called buffering. But nowadays there is too much acid in the ocean for that to work. This acidity can now dissolve certain sea shells! Another issue is that the H+ ions emitted from the acid change the minerals needed for a crustaceans making of it’s shell. Those minerals are no longer usable and the animal is shelless (a big problem as you can imagine). All of this is caused by pollution. As ocean portal says “thanks to people burning fuels, there is now more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than anytime in the past 15 million years.” And 30% of that acid is absorbed by the ocean. But to summarise we can reverse our damage. By drastically reducing our pollution eventually the ocean will buffer again. As ocean portal says “The most realistic way to lower this number [the acidity of the ocean]—or to keep it from getting astronomically higher—would be to reduce our carbon emissions.”

  14. If you live in Guilderland, you are familiar with the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. It is home to a variety of species and trails that many of us grew up on. What if I told you that could all disappear? 18.7 million acres of forest are lost each year, and it threatens the way we live our lives. Forests soak up carbon- if we no longer had the trees and plants of the woods, carbon would be released, and our climate would change drastically in temperature and precipitation. Using fire to clear forests threatens biodiversity. Many forests are home to endangered species and the fire could kill them off quickly. There are also tribes who live around forests in some parts of the world. They would run out of resources and be forced to migrate. I think we can fix this problem by donating money to organizations like World Wild Life and voting in elections for candidates or laws that support conservation. In New York State, we have the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which offers camps for kids to learn about the planet and how they can keep the forests alive. We also are very lucky to have the Adirondack State Park nearby and the Albany Pine Bush in our backyard. A final suggestion to end deforestation would be to spread the word. By telling people the brutal effects of deforestation, hopefully people will care about preserving the over 4 billion acres of incredible forests on Earth.

Or even that the chemicals on the water bottle can travel long distances in the air and water? Toxic chemicals entering seas have negative impacts on the environment. Once chemicals hit the ocean it tremendously causes environmental hazards. Once chemicals hit the surface of the sea or ocean the chemicals become more concentrated. Once the chemicals become more concentrated the lowest member of the food chain absorbs it. Once that member gets eaten the next one comes and eats it. Until you get to the top of the food chain. Most of the sea animals become intoxicated by the chemicals . Us humans love seafood, so sometimes we might end up eating what we helped happened which later affects us with serious health problems. Is it too late to reverse the effects of toxic chemicals entering seas? No. All though we should be more careful when disposing trash.

  18. Humans need oxygen to live. We also need something to mitigate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. Trees and other plants are critically important to both. Trees and plants not only produce oxygen, but also consume carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Tragically, the Earth is losing 18.7 million acres of forest every year. Humans are encroaching upon forestlands by cutting down millions of trees for lumber and to convert land to sell for a profit to ranchers and farmers. The rate at which we are losing forestland is equal to losing 27 soccer fields of land every minute. There is more than 210 gigatons of carbon in tropical forests. Deforestation causes about 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions that are put into the environment causing other problems. Some of the most diverse life lives in the forests including most of the endangered and threatened species in the world. Can Earth forgive us for what we have done or is it too late? I think if we support great organizations in their efforts, we can start to reverse the effects of deforestation and regenerate our planet’s forests. But at the rate deforestation is occurring we have to do something other then planting trees as an attempt at replacing forests. Mature trees like the ones that are being cut down contribute significantly more to an ecosystem then young trees, and the young trees will take hundreds of years to mature. So we should continue to re-develop the forests but we also need to push for stronger laws against deforestation.

It a known fact that some remained uncut and have been thrown into the ocean like a it is a landfill. By not cutting them they can suffocate many fish. But, the main problem is not that the fishes are suffocating it is the trash in the ocean in the first place. If we kept track of where our trash goes it wouldn’t end up in the ocean and suffocate those fishes. Do you know that marine life often think that plastic bags are food? Do you what happens if they try to consume it? The plastic bag blocks the breathing passages and stomachs of many. It also decomposes very slowly which doesn’t help. To add there has been untreated or undertreated sewage found in the ocean. Studies have shown 80% of urban sewage goes into the Mediterranean sea. Apparently to us the ocean is a great place for dumping waste. Until the 1970’s, people dumped pesticides, chemical weapons, and radioactive waste; and fortunately dumping most toxic materials was banned by the London Dumping Convention in 1972. Most. But already dumped chemicals are a problem. Chemicals can travel through water, soil, air, and etc… Once in the air they can travel far. And once in the pollutants enter animals they become very concentrated and I say very. Tiny animals absorbs chemicals as they eat and the chemicals don’t break down easily. In time when predators prey on them they get the chemicals in them and as a faster, larger species they can bring the chemicals with them as they find more prey. For example seals as you might or not know they are high up the food chain. This means they eat a lot of fish that has the chemicals. Seals can have contamination levels million times than the ocean. But seals aren't at the top, so they still have predators. If a polar bear eats a seal it can have contamination levels more than three billion compared to the environment. Us humans have caused damage to the extent where we can’t fix what already happened in the past.

    1. I don't think we can revert the damage done to the oceans but I think we can stop the problem from getting worse. We can help to do this using a lot of techniques. We can regulate the trash output from factories, we can use biodegradable plastics from materials such as manure, and we can apply zoning. I believe that none of these solutions will fix the problem, but it will stop it from growing.

    2. Ian, I agree to your response when you said "I don't think we can revert the damage done to the oceans but I think we can stop the problem from getting worse." I think your solutions are great and we can definitely do it such as using "biodegradable plastics from materials such as manure." We can slowly "heal" the ocean. Another solution is making sure our trash that cannot be used again goes where it belongs. Maybe we can go send a letter to people that have power and try to persuade/convince them to make sure trash doesn't go in the ocean and contaminate it.

  22. Humans have a negative impact on the environment by smoking. Smoking can have a negative impact on the environment. It affects the air we breathe, water we drink, the land, soil and plants. Do you ever wonder what happens when you finish a cigarette and throw the butt away? When you throw a cigarette butt on the ground it is most likely the butt will get swept away by water from a lake or river, and when that butt of the cigarette is swept away by water their are animals there that can mistake it for food. When the animal is eating the butt it can be harmed because the cigarettes are very toxic. That’s how Smoking has an negative impact on the earth.

    1. Tresha, this idea is seems very simple but it is much more complex. Cigarettes companies were banned from making commercials to put on TV because of all the affects the cigarette has. They do ahm the enviroment but there are places at almost every public place where people can put out there cigarettes in a safe manner. The real danger of smoking is what it can do to you. Smokers are out at a much higher chance to develop some sort of lung or throat diseaes or cancer. Also, teen smoking is an even worse threat on the human race. Teenagers lungs are still developing and if a teen smokes before the lung are done, that teens lungs can be stunned and may never grow to be big enoughforthem when they are fully grown. They can develop asthma and have shortness of breath from some of the simplist things, such as walking down the street. We have to look at this topic from a much bigger picture than pollution, and already a big topic. The way we are living rightnow could permantly affect how the evolution of humans happens. If we can ever change this cycle we would need bigger consequences fro peoples actions.

    2. Alex, I do agree with you and how smoking is more on what it can do to your body. Also how smoking can affect the evolution of humans happenings. Another thing is second hand smoking which very dangerous, expectantly to children at young ages with parents who smoke.

  23. Are you having cancer? Have you ever smoke before? Do you think influence on smoking is affecting our planet? It is absolutely is , because more than 16 million people ,who has cancer, dies every 10 years. You basically started smoking when you were a teenager. Most teenagers knew that heavy smoking can be seriously harmful, so why do people keep smoking? Do you know what will happen to the environment if everybody was smoking. Tobacco causes deforestation and over use of harmful chemicals. Farmers are negatively impacting the planet by burning down trees, which gives us oxygen, so that they can plant tobacco. As farmers burned more forests, the tobacco cultivation starts to increase on greenhouse levels. Compare to other plants, Farmers uses most chemicals to promote growth of Tobacco. Because Tobacco can grow alone, farmers used chemicals that are banned from the U.S. The Tobacco manufacturing business leaves a amount of waste, that can damage the environment. These chemical wastes can lead to seas. I do not think it is too late to stop tobacco. You can quit smoking by asking a doctor about ways to prevent tobacco. If anybody can quit smoking, you can quit too.

    1. Mikael, I do agree that smoking has a bad impact on the planet. I like your solution, but making people quit smoking isn't as easy as we want. Smoking is an addiction and the level of smokers on Earth is very high. It would be way to hard to make everyone on the planet stop smoking. We have made progress in recent years and hopefully your solution will work one day, but I don't think it will be soon.

  24. I do not think this could be reversed. I think a solution could be keep in mind about other inhabitants that are in our area and think before we decide on a decision that wasn't thought out. Our population is going to keep growing and I don't think that's something we would be able to change. In my opinion I think we could try and reduce the number of animals killed by creating more laws and and being open minded.

  25. I don't think that the damage caused by humans can be reversed because, you reverse extinction. Humans have done so much to hurt the world. So much that it will be impossible to clean up, unpollute the oceans, unlitter the earth and unextinct animals. Unless that happens, the earth, is doomed. The isn't really a solution to this but here are a few I have in mind:

    - Do more to help the enviornment
    - Don't litter
    - Don't pollute the oceans
    - Help endangered species
    - arrest poachers
    - Don't use things that hurt the environment for entertainment

If everyone does this, maybe we can definitely get somewhere.

  26. I agree that humans can not forgive the world for extinction.we cause too much damage in the ecosystem.I think we could still fix this there are more animal species to be found and we can redeem ourselves with the ones that are currently alive. We can still restore some maybe most animal species from going extinct.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is definitely more to fix and I agree with your solutions. But you can't find more of of the animal species because once all of the animals are extinct, there are extinct and there's no more that can be found unless there is some of the species left in the wilderness that nobody that there are still animals left of that species that people think that are extinct and there's no more species left of that animal/animals anymore in the whole entire world/earth/atmosphere.

  28. I agree with your comment. Some people use cigarettes for medical uses. I think the reason why people still smoke is because, they wanted to feel better from depression. They wanted to transform from a loser to a winner with marijuana in their system.I think it is probably best to wait until something happens
