Share Your Awareness: 2015-2016 D Class

He found that he was often angry, now: irrationally angry at his groupmates, that they were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on.  And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.
He tried.  Without asking permission from The Giver, because he feared--or knew--that it would be denied, he tried to give his new awareness to his friends.  (99)

What awareness about an issue do you have, or what do you know and understand about some reality that you wish other people could also see, understand and apply to their own lives?

In one paragraph:

  • describe an issue that you care about,
  • include details from an on-line source to fully describe the issue,
  • explain what you want on-line readers to understand about your perspective (without using the words I, my, mine, etc), and
  • post a copy of the full url at the end.

  1. Human beings, especially since the industrial revolution, have contributed vast damage to our environment. Almost 69% of the sources where we acquire fresh water is polluted. In addition, while air pollution rates have decreased since 1990, 127 million people worldwide still live in areas where the amount of pollution is more than what is considered healthy for humans. If we want life on this planet to continue, then we need to step up our efforts to cease damaging our environment.

  2. A report highlighting the inequality between the world's richest and poorest has revealed that the bottom half of adults owned less than one percent of world's total wealth while the richest 10 percent held 87.7 percent of it. to be classified among the world's elite 1 per cent, you would need $759,900. The richest one percent owns more than half of the world’s wealth; The combined wealth of the richest 1 percent will overtake that of the other 99 percent of people next year unless the current trend of rising inequality is checked.

  3. Did you know that there are only 400,000,000,000 (400 billion) trees left on earth? Humans are destroying the environment and they, we can stop it! Deforestation, extinction and corruption, three things that are adding to the destruction of Mother Earth. Like previously said, there are only 400 billion trees left in the world, and 390 billion trees are in the amazon rain forest! Did you know before civilization took over there were twice as many trees in the world? Humans need to stop expanding, leave the plants alone. Our planet can't take much more of this abuse. You have some great statistics, but for this topic, I think you also need to spend some time discussing how vital trees are to how we live. How would we get oxygen without trees? How does deforestation cause the downfall of species that will affect the biodiversity of the planet?

  4. Gun violence is occurring more and more in the U.S.A. From 2000 to 2006 there was an average of 6.4 shootings. From 2007 to 2013 there was an average of 16.4 shootings. The average was increased by ten; this is an issue developing into something way bigger. In the past three years here are two shootings killing more than ten people. Have heard of the San Bernardino shooting? Fourteen people were killed and 21 people were wounded. Two people open fired at a holiday party ending in the results above. The assailants died in a shootout with the police. Also in Newtown, Connecticut was the tragedy that shocked the U.S.A. A man broke into Sandy Hook Elementary, and killed 20 first graders, six adults and wounded one before committing suicide. In 2015 alone, the U.S.A. has had 45 school shootings. There should be more laws that control people having weapons. Think of all the tragedies we could have avoided and prevented if there were more strict laws about guns.

  6. Humans are responsible for the extinction of many species. Before humans evolved, one species per one million went extinct per year. Once humans came along and started overfishing, poaching, and destroying habitats; animal extinction started happening 1,000 times faster. Over the past 500 years, humans have caused 322 species to become extinct. Even though we are responsible for so many extinctions, the stability of our ecosystem is dependent on animals. In the US, shark watching makes $314 million per year, which supports 10,000 jobs. We have to stop killing animals if we want our society to be stable.

  7. Every single day, millions of rats, mice, cats, dogs, and many other animals are used in experimentation. They are locked in cages waiting to be poisoned, suffocated, burned, and murdered. This is testing, all in the name of science. Is it wrong? Yes, it is very wrong. First of all, animals react differently to diseases, drugs, medicines and other things than we do. That makes these tests faulty. In fact, 9 out of 10 candidate medicines that were tested with animals, fail when used on humans. This makes testing just an execution of animals for products that don’t even work! We have tested before on orphans, blacks, G.I.s (military), and Gypsies. We realized it was wrong to test on humans and we should realize the same thing with animals. 8. Can you believe that more than two-thirds of the adults in the U.S are obese? Hard to imagine, right? Well, obesity rates have more than just doubled in both adults and children since the 1970’s. That’s right, people are becoming more obese in an immense quantity. CDC researchers released information about obesity in adults and children in November 2015. They reported that about 36 percent of adults are obese. 17% of the children and adolescents that are 2-19 years old are also obese. If people want to be healthy, then they should eat healthy and do the necessary amount of exercise needed.

Global Warming is now a huge factor in our society. The whole world is getting warmer whether you realize it or not, this will make it harder for farmers to grow crops. Global Warming is the progressive increase in the earth’s gradual temperature in the atmosphere. If global warming continues there will be rising sea levels due to melting polar ice caps. This will cause more extreme weather to occur. Global Warming is caused when there is an increase of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases caused by burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are natural resources like coal, oil, gasoline, diesel, and natural gases. Humans use these fuels to power our cars and homes and for electricity. When fossil fuel is burnt it releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. We have to stop using fossil fuel to power our appliances and we need another way to power our world. Or else the world will eventually erupt into chaos.

What your system does is it uses a refrigerant to compress and expand. But what is this so called refrigerant and what is really circulating in your AC? Most likely you have HCFCs or CFCs these are gasses that are made specifically for air conditioning. Now you may ask why should I care? The answer is these gases when released by leaks or naturally escaping cause ozone layer depletion, which is not good for the ozone and global warming. If the ozone gets destroyed we can get skin cancer from the sun's uv rays and the earth gets hotter. Now you may be asking what can I do to stop this? Well there is an alternative to these refrigerants and they will most likely will be available soon! They are called natural refrigerants. They are much better than HCFCs and CFCs because they are substances that are natural occurring in nature so they don't hurt the environment. Some of these refrigerants maybe even be able to immediately replace your existing refrigerant!

Another reason of how animals are going endangered is when people are killing way too many animals and then trade them which is illegal to trade animals. My opinion of endangered animals is that he feels upset because all these animals are being extinct because people want money and that is not fair for any animal.

Pollution has greatly affected the earth in a negative way. It is one of the biggest global killers. There are three major types of pollution; Water pollution, air pollution, and littering. Littering is when garbage and recyclables are left on the ground. Things like cars and planes cause air pollution. The air can sometimes become so toxic, it makes people sick. Dumping garbage in the water is what sometimes makes it undrinkable. It sometimes becomes so poisonous, you can’t even touch it without becoming sick. Water pollution kills over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals per year. So the next time you have an empty bottle, put it in the recycling bin.

Six companies control the news that is presented to you. Comcast owns NBC, CBS has CBS, Disney has ABC, Viacom has UPN, News Corp has FOX, and CNN has been bought by Time Warner. But it’s not just companies either. The CIA has openly admitted to owning “everyone of any significance in the major media”. This means that the news can lie to you at any time, if it was worth enough money. So don’t ever believe the news, or at least check another source.

Animal abuse or animal neglect is a huge problem, in which there are over 1880 cruelty cases a year. Animal abuse is when you fail to provide the essential needs to animals such as food and veterinary care. But it can be much more such as dog and cock fighting or just beating animals. Most cases of animal abuse are never reported and when it is, more than half are dogs. While only six states have second or third offense felony animal cruelty laws (Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Virginia), it is still a huge problem. People are giving unprovoked, morbid anger to animals which is devastating and needs to be stopped.

A concussion is a traumatically induced physiological disruption of the brain’s function that can be caused by a direct blow to the head or by an indirect impulsive forces transmitted to the head. Females are more common to get concussions because they tend to have weaker neck muscles than men typically do . Since younger athletes are still developing their brains, their recovery from traumatic brain injuries tend to take longer. Most concussions take about seven to ten days to recover from , except in children. American emergency departments reported they treat an estimated 173,285 sports traumatic brain injuries [most of the injuries concussions] among children and adolescents, from birth to the age of 19. world overpopulation is a very broad problem that will kill the world eventually. With so many people in the world growing faster than ever befor, it has grown over 4 billion in 75 short years! From 3 billion in 1960 to well over 7 billion in 2015. At this rate by the year 2100 the world's population will be close to the 12,000,000,000 mark. With this many people it's easy to see how it could kill the world with factories pushing out as many goods as possible to supply the massive demand very possibly ignoring safety and environment standards in a race to sell people goods before their competitors can. The oceans will be hunted to extinction. No woods left they will all have been inhabited in a battle for the little available land. The animals that were hunted to extinction will harm our whole food chain killing many important animals off forcing us
to create alternatives for them with robots or replacing their food ourselves. Our mines will not exist as all land will have been torn apart looking for the valuable resources. With nothing left on this planet including space we will need to move somewheres else or accept a slow painful death. The future's not bright.

The New York State tests are brutal. They are cruel to students, teachers, and even schools in general. They also undermine learning in many ways. First of all, they undermine learning by only testing two subjects (Language Arts & Math,) which discourages Science and Social Studies; skills needed for the real world, such as when you are applying for a college you might need a certain science grade. The tests are cruel to schools as well. The government is saying schools need to score in a certain range to get a certain amount of money, and in my district we did, but we didn’t get the money; it all went to New York City and probably to Pearson (the creator of the tests). Can you believe that $32 MILLION goes to Pearson every year? The results of the tests are supposed to help teachers teach but the results come back too late in the year for that. The results wouldn’t be too good because the tests are usually two or three grade levels too hard for the tested grade level.

Science helped us develop new medicines in the 20th century helping us grow the population and fight off diseases like influenza and bird flu. However, lately NASA lost $186 million. To put that into scale, look at a dollar bill. NASA’s budget is 1/40th of an inch on that dollar bill. Science isn’t the only thing that’s losing money. The education system is as well. We think that we are the center of the universe sometimes and this is one of the worst thing that we can do in our lives, because we are not the center of the universe we are merely a part of it. But our “role models” in society have led us to believe otherwise, saying things like, appearance is everything, and social media is the best thing since sliced bread, and this is why I say that society in this day and age stinks. People have forgotten how to talk to each other face to face and would rather text using emojis and badly spelled abbreviations and they have accepted this as normal speech. Nowadays people have their whole lives on the internet, chatting and posting when they could be out actually doing something. People don’t realise that the stuff they post online can come back and could ruin the chances of them not getting a college degree, a job,or having a very successful future. In a world where the average age in the U.S. for someone to get a phone is six, it is not hard to imagine people doing stupid things on the internet. In my opinion society is crumbling and the fact that we have terrible role models isn’t helping anyone, especially the people who try to act like them; people should try to reconnect with the real world, instead of living their lives on the internet.

People who judge another by their skin color or race is simply impatient. Racism is one of the most controversial things in our society. In my opinion society is decaying because of problems like this. We should be judging somebody by their personality not by what part of the world they are in or their skin color. People probably choose not to stop this problem because they don't want to associate themselves with negative actions. We could solve this epidemic by developing patience toward other countries or people. It also has been used 7 times in a criminal use. The injuries and deaths that gun violence has caused can get more people to use them for self - defense. Society sees only what it wants to see about you, it focus’ on spots that you’re self-conscious about and nothing else. Society doesn’t care about what makes you special or unique they see your flaws and then step on you like an old piece of gum because you’re not perfect. People always compare and judge themselves to others, that’s why many people are depressed or have low self esteem. People who focus on all the bad parts of you normally feel bad about themselves, or they feel that they don't have to justify their actions, so that results in being rude and just overall being mean. Modern society has made humans inhumane by taking us and molding our brains into thinking everything about us had to be perfect hair, shoes, makeup, weight, and even clothes. Many people have fallen into the hands of society and I'm not sure that they can get out now because of how far they have fallen.

That's not even it; there is also Electronical devices. 2015 is a wreck when it comes to how electronics and social media is being used. Stuff like nude pics for attention, calling people out of their name, Gossip, Publicity, Feuds, etc. Video games is also a big problem in our society. Videos games like GTA(Grand Theft Auto) is a bad influence. It shows kids that it's okay to kill people and that it is okay to smoke drugs. There is even Strippers are in that game. There are proven facts that we have a bad influential social society.

    1. Your stand isn't so clear, but I think it is calling for us to either stop paying attention to the mass media or to ask the mass media to stop promoting poor values. You have three good categories of mass media, and in the last one you actually mention a specific game; I think you need specific examples for the first two categories, and there must be some statistics out there that really help show how influenced people really are.
