Share Your Awareness: 2015-2016 A Class

He found that he was often angry, now: irrationally angry at his groupmates, that they were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on.  And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.
He tried.  Without asking permission from The Giver, because he feared--or knew--that it would be denied, he tried to give his new awareness to his friends.  (99)

What awareness about an issue do you have, or what do you know and understand about some reality that you wish other people could also see, understand and apply to their own lives?

In one paragraph:

  • describe an issue that you care about,
  • include details from an on-line source to fully describe the issue,
  • explain what you want on-line readers to understand about your perspective (without using the words I, my, mine, etc), and
  • post a copy of the full url at the end.

  1. Human beings, especially since the industrial revolution, have contributed vast damage to our environment. Almost 69% of the sources where we acquire fresh water is polluted. In addition, while air pollution rates have decreased since 1990, 127 million people worldwide still live in areas where the amount of pollution is more than what is considered healthy for humans. If we want life on this planet to continue, then we need to step up our efforts to cease damaging our environment.

  2. The Media LOVES to tell stories to shape how people think of something. The media is everywhere from Newspapers to websites and they have been blaming a lot of thing from video games. The media says that children who play video games are mostly juveniles who will do crimes in their life but that's not true at all. Studies show that 70% of video games made are rated E and E︉10 which means children of all ages or ten and up. And studies also show that teenage boys would rather play a violent video game but the games do not affect their brain. I think that the media blows things out of proportion blaming video games for every child related crime happens.

Do you find yourself being super busy all the time? Does it make you feel good, or does it make you feel stressed? Being busy doesn’t seem like a huge problem, I know. Many people say that If you’re not super busy, you are not hardworking, So people are trying to make themselves busier, which means multitasking. Multitasking is actually terrible when you are trying to be productive. David Meyer from the University of Michigan published a study that shows that if you multitask, the two jobs take 25% longer to do than if you did them separately. Multitasking slows you down, increasing the chance of you making multiple mistakes. Disruptions and Interruptions also give us a harder time when trying to process information. It takes people an average of 15 minutes to focus again after getting interrupted or distracted from something like an email or a phone call. When trying to do 2 things at once, your brain lacks the capacity to do both things successfully, and makes us do worse on both things. It is proven that high multitaskers have less brain density... you are pretty much training your mind to be unproductive. We are drawn to being busy despite the fact that it ruins our productivity. Why? We want to feel accomplished... but nothing will get accomplished if we don’t slow down, stop multitasking and do our best.

    1. The stand to this paragraph is that we should not multitask and do one thing at a time. I think that you should also give examples of how you should plan your time and not multitask for your everyday schedule.

  4. Wealth. What does that mean to you? What about uneven wealth distribution? Uneven wealth distribution is a big problem, and one that we desperately need to fix. The most wealthy 10% now have nearly 85% of assets. In 1989, America’s wealthiest tenth of families has 79% of them. Clearly, the majority of people are getting less and less money by the year. So what happens in say, 2021? The majority will most likely get about 5% and the rich will get 95%. Or maybe we can turn the statistics around... But it’s up to us to be the change we want to see in the community.

  5. What is the right amount of homework for a student in seventh grade? Most students would probably agree that we have too much homework. We spend 6 hours a day learning at school and up to 90 minutes of travel time per day. If we are involved in a sport, boy/girl scouts or other activity, that might meet 1-5 days a week for an average of 1-2 hours per day. It is expected that we get about 10 hours of sleep per night for proper rest. At our age, according to the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association, the standard amount of homework is 10-minutes per year of school. So, that would mean an average of 70 minutes per day for a seventh grade student. Are we made smarter by more homework? Recent studies have shown that this excessive homework only causes high stress levels, a lack of balance in children's lives and physical health problems such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation and weight loss. A study from 2012 found no relationship between time spent on homework and grades but did find a positive link between homework and performance on standardized tests.

  6. The teacher walks into the classroom and all the students are already in their seats, calm and quiet. It is time for dismissal and as you leave the bus you see a “friend” from school teasing and pushing around a familiar face from school. That friend of yours is a very good listener and does a fine job in school but why this behavior all of a sudden? This is having two faces or sides one in school and one outside perhaps where there are no adults present. This is also a form of bullying. Victims of bullying can have bad performance in school. This leads to bad grades and less support from friends. When kids are bullied the first people that get to know about it is their friends. Sometimes their friends are faced with the problem and give up on the victim. People don’t know the effects of being bullied one big one is depression. Kids develope this issues and they are not treated immediately to be solved. These kids have a problem called social-development and are put into classrooms where there are kids without problems. Did you know 5% of high school students nationwide stay home from school to avoid teasing and bullies? Shouldn’t we do something about this problem and take immediate action? A teacher had taken a survey from her students about who should be the “star student” and who they would like to sit with. This shows the teacher who needs peer support and who is causing this. So let’s take a stand and fight the bullies to make our environment a better place.

Littering can also suffocate animals! 11.5 billion dollars is spent every year for cleaning up litter. When you find Litter on sidewalks or along curbs. It potentially could get washed down into storm drains during a heavy rain. Eventually this water will lead to the nearest river or ocean. 1.9 billion tons of litter are washed into the ocean every year. If the water becomes polluted from litter, and we can no longer use it for drinking or recreation. Online readers should recognize this problem and address it by helping themselves and others. 8. Do you recall that friend of yours you asked if they cared about the environment? But the next day they’re kicking a can right next to the recycling bin down the curb? This is an example of how our society doesn’t care about our planet earth. And this makes me outraged. Earth is our home. You wouldn’t trash up your household or slaughter your pets. Right? Surveys show that the percent of people that don’t care about the environment is growing steadily by about 3 to 10 percent per year.A vital reason for this is the evolution of technology. Studies show that people are inside 90% of the time looking at their screens. So if you’re reading this and know that you’re one of those couch potatoes, then go outside and pick up some trash. Even if you pick up a can a day, you could help make your home a cleaner place just as we should.

  9. What would you do if you see a classmate getting bullied? Would you stand up for him or would you be apart of the crowd? 86% of the kids would be like everyone else, and don’t stand up for what’s right . Bullying is when the behavior hurts, humiliates or harms another person physically or emotionally. There are many types of bullying, but they all have the same effect on someone. There are three categories: physical, emotional, and in person. Bullying is something that is near and dear to me since I have been bullied twice. Bullying has many impacts on their education, health and safety. Lots of kids avoid school, others have low self-esteem and others have increased aggression. Some kids even take their life because of bullying. Next time you see someone getting bullied, step up and help them. You may just saved their life.

One in every six Americans struggle with hunger every day, which is roughly 48.1 million people. These people are working people who have to make very hard decisions to either get food put on the table or other needs in their house. Nearly 13 million families struggle with hunger in their life. This is a lot of people who battle hunger everyday but together we can out number it. Feeding America's food banks serve 5.4 million people each week! If people keep donating their time and work at these food banks we can conquer and out hunger.

Well terrorism has been around since 66 AD, we as americans have declared terrorism as the number one problem. Terrorism is created when an individual or a group uses violence to gain power, this is done to create anxiety or fear. Hijacking, bombing and assassinations are just a few examples for terrorism from 1070-2011 there has been 104,689 terror attacks worldwide, terror is horrible to feel especially when it's used against us in an act of violence.

  15. You might already know about Global Warming, but do you know what it is doing to our planet? Global Warming causes early snow melt, glaciers to melt and severe droughts. Which cause more water shortages in Western America. Warmer sea surface temperatures will cause more dangerous hurricanes in the Southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In 2002 Colorado, Arizona and Oregon had their worst wildfire seasons ever, because of global warming. Since the early 1950’s snow accumulation has dropped 60% and so has the season winter. Global warming is very bad for the environment. We are damaging our own planet. We can prevent Global Warming by making Conserving Energy part of our everyday life. Each time you use a compact fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent bulb, you keep nearly 700 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air over the bulb’s lifetime. Please help save the environment.

Recent reports show that now the top 1% has almost as much wealth as the bottom 99%. Now that’s a huge problem isn't it? First, we should tax the rich, not the poor and clamp down on rich people avoiding taxes. Then there is Capitalism, in which the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. My opinion is that the poor should NOT be taxed the rich SHOULD be taxed, and a percentage of the rich people’s taxes should go to those who live in poverty, Can you accept to live in a world where the top 1% have almost as much as the bottom 99%.That is your decision that only YOU can make. For 48 million Americans, however, that is not the case. Food insecurity is the name for not having enough food to get by. 1 in 6 people in the U.S. are food insecure, accounting for about 14% of households, and the issue is present in every county in the United States. So while you may not even think about having enough food to eat, many other people have to.

You could use all that money for everything your little heart desires or you could spent every last nickel on giving food to the large homeless population. That's where the problem starts, maybe if you were in this conversation then maybe you would say to give that money away but all the wealthy wouldn't even consider helping the cause.
The population of wealthy are much smaller than the population of homeless, but as wealthy people give less and less people give shares to charity this is and has been a problem. We still have the charities that give meal packages to poor families, homeless shelters, etc. But even what we have now would be so much greater if the wealthy people would chip in to help. But of course it isn't just wealthy people but the people we give hundreds of dollars every day. Major chain fast food restaurants are paying workers minimum wage and even though the minimum wage was raised it is still not near enough to make a living out of. The ceo’s of these companies take all that money they're not paying their employees and keep a large share of it which they could be giving. The bright side of the situation is that these big companies at least donate some money to charities, like mcdonald's. there are also those people out there that want to make a difference in this world. Manoj Bhargava, billionaire CEO of 5-Hour Energy drinks has put in all of his money to at the moment solve two problems. A bike on a stand that can create 24 hours worth of energy in a home for 2 hours of pedaling a bike. He hired a group of people and created a way to turn sea water to clean tap water and it half powers itself with heat. He plans to put tons of these on a barge and use it to solve or at least help with the water drought in california. Now after reading this, if you had millions of dollars and don't know what to do with yourself, would you help a cause?
