He found that he was often angry, now: irrationally angry at his groupmates, that they were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on. And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.
He tried. Without asking permission from The Giver, because he feared--or knew--that it would be denied, he tried to give his new awareness to his friends. (99)
What awareness about an issue do you have, or what do you know and understand about some reality that you wish other people could also see, understand and apply to their own lives?
In one paragraph:
- describe an issue that you care about,
- include details from an on-line source to fully describe the issue,
- explain what you want on-line readers to understand about your perspective (without using the words I, my, mine, etc), and
- post a copy of the full url at the end.
Human beings, especially since the industrial revolution, have contributed vast damage to our environment. Almost 69% of the sources where we acquire fresh water is polluted. In addition, while air pollution rates have decreased since 1990, 127 million people worldwide still live in areas where the amount of pollution is more than what is considered healthy for humans. If we want life on this planet to continue, then we need to step up our efforts to cease damaging our environment.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.sustainablebabysteps.com/human-impact-on-environment.html
Pollution is a big issue in today’s world. Especially pollution in the water. Pollution is destroying habitats and killing off species we’ve never even heard of. There is a part of the ocean called the coral triangle that is being hurt by pollution happening world-wide. It is called the coral triangle clearly because it has a lot of coral. It is also one of the most biodiverse (a lot of species live there) places in the world. But because of pollution the fish population is going down. The economy on the shore is dependant on the fish market so this is very bad. Another place affected by pollution is the Yangtze river in China. It is the 3rd longest river in the world. It also provides a habitat for the snow leopard, giant panda, and Yangtze finless porpoise. Locals also rely on it for drinking water, farming, fishing, and transportation. But because of pollution, urbanization, expansion of industries, and economic growth there is a strain on the river. I think that we as humans, should start to go green and find better energy sources because burning oil, gasoline and coal create pollution. If we want the world to be clean for future generations then we should stop polluting our environment, and start cleaning it.

We should go green and stop pollution!! nice and easy stand. You could research what are the top causes of pollution.
DeleteCyber bullying is bullying that takes place using social media and the internet. “In the 21st century there is a lot of social media like, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat etc…” Cyber bullying is way too easy to target people more easily. “A way to prevent bullying is to be aware of what your kids are doing online”, “Stopbullying.gov” said, “Ask for their passwords, but tell them you’ll only use them in case of emergency”. “Have a sense of what your kids do online and in texts. Learn about the sites they like. Try out the devices they use”. Cyber Bullying needs to be stopped because of the effect it has on kids, such as kids hurting themselves or committing suicide.

There are many problems in the world but the one that I believe is more important is recycling. Recycling is very important because about 53% of what we have is just discarded into landfills. Only about 34% of the things we use are recycled or composted and only about 13% of things we make are combusted for energy. That’s a lot of wasted material compared to what we recycle! Besides wasting materials most of the wasted items are thrown into water or land areas and they create landfills. There are so many great things we can do if we reuse, reduce, recycle! There are also other good things that recycling can do. For example recycling can “ conserve natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals” it “also reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.” Remember using a bottle less each day keeps the landfills away.

Could youre stand be We need to recycle more? I liked it but you could study the small amount of people that do recycle?
DeleteDomestic Violence is a type of violence that can happen to anyone. Children, Adults, Moms, Dads, Grandpa’s, Grandma’s, etc. (but not animals)
ReplyDeleteMen, and Women can be a victim of Domestic Violence.
One detail from my article is that in 1994-1995 the state of Michigan made Domestic Violence illegal.
Some facts to cover that statement are below. Basically if you get abused, you should take some self defense lessons. Or you need to find someone to help you. Another fact about domestic violence is that Domestic Violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation. Often including the threat or use of violence. Types of Domestic Violence are: Violence, Battering, Relationship Abuse, or Family Violence. Men and Women can be victims of Domestic Violence. 85% of domestic violence victims are women.

DeleteIf you are a parent,a teacher or a kid you know how stressful homework can be. Some kids are stressed because their parents keep making them study as soon as they get home. The parents are stressed because they have to have internet access, they have to buy things for projects, and they have to go “back to highschool math” to figure out math problums that they are doing in middle school. Homework is bad for you, your kid and sometimes the teacher. Should we have homework?

DeletePeople who are wealthy and who have power over others, are coming into our political systems. They think they will have control which leads to a advantage over the other candidates. Donald Trump is one example. Donald Trump as announced is running for Presidency in 2016. Donald Trump so far is dominating the republican party. His outrageous outbursts have set a child like reputation. These heinous actions have brought some amusement and beguile attention to Donald Trump. Some examples of this are his sexist accusations, and racist beliefs. Donald Trump wants to remove any immigrants from Mexico out of the United States because “When Mexico sends there people here they are not sending their best… They are sending people that have lots of problems. They are bringing their problems to us. They are bringing drugs and crime, and there rapists.” Donald trump assumes that all people are like this and wants to send them all back to Mexico. This is unjust for many reasons. That’s why I feel strongly that Donald Trump should not win the election.

DeleteThere are many problems in our society today. One of them is racism. No matter what race, people still use racism against each other, to make one race feel superior to another. Racism is more than just words or actions. It even means that invisible barriers prevent humanity from doing things in life, just because of their cultural background. More than 1 out of 20 Australians were physically attacked because of their race. There is another type of racism called Systemic racism, which not everyone is offended by, but makes things difficult for other cultures or ethnic groups. For example, a bank could ask people to fill out a form in english, which makes people that do not have english as their primary language to fill it in so easily.
ReplyDeleteIn my point of view, racism should be eliminated. Of course, there is no way to just make it disappear, but society can change, it just takes a good effort, and time.

I can tell yours is about racism. Maybe you could put something about how some people can't get jobs because of their race or how its more unlikely.
DeleteAnimal Abuse By: Jordan.Q
ReplyDeleteThe shocking number of cruelty cases reported daily on TV, on the internet and in newspapers is only the beginning. Most cases are never reported and most animal suffering goes unrecognized. 64.5 percent (1,212) involved dogs (25 percent of these were identified as pit-bull-type breeds). 18 percent (337) involved cats. Also 25 percent (470) involved other animals such as horses, sheep etc. As you can see a lot of animals have been hurt and we have done little to change it. Be an everyday hero, stop animal abuse, do something to help.

Hunger in America is rapidly growing. Main causes are People losing their jobs. On http://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/ it said that 14.8% of people in America go to bed hungry every night. This may seem slim but this means that you have a one in seven chance that you will go to bed hungry. If it still seems slim then you should know about 500,000 people in America go to bed hungry every night. In 2014 the state that had the most people going to bed hungry was Mississippi. In Mississippi their job rate lossage is 7.8. Personally hunger in the U.S. is a huge problem. This is a huge problem because about 500,000 people go to bed hungry every night and that is just in America.
ReplyDeleteYour stand should be,"This is a problem because people don't want to go to bed starving." You can also research how much food there is in America, and why are people not having food.
DeleteIt's not so clear what your stand is, but my guess is that you want to see more efforts to help feed the hungry. I think you should research statistics that show who is hungry, and also why they are hungry. The hungriest are the poorest, and perhaps you could make that connection in your editorial.
DeleteRacism is starting to turn into a big problem in the US and other places. Exactly half of Americans say that it’s a problem that is starting to get bigger in the US. It’s also starting to represent its highest level to concern in this country since about 1995. That’s twenty years and it’s reaching it’s highest point now?! We need to take action if we want to stop all the racism in our country. After all, it’s not our color that matters, it’s how we feel.

Sara, your stand is, "We need to stop racism." You could discuss specifically what race(s) are being affected.
DeleteYour stand is quite clear: take action against racism. What you need to research is two things: 1. Statistics on racism, and 2. At least one example of what people may think is current racism (Oscar awards, police brutality against one race, etc).
DeleteTrump said, "People are pouring across our borders which is horrible. We have to build a wall...Look, I build some of the greatest buildings in the world. Building a wall for me is easy." said Trump. There are a lot of immigrants coming into the country. There is not enough food or homes to have this many people coming over to the United States. DeleteWhat if your mom and house were just blown to pieces because they were suspected that they were working for Isis. Well this is what is going on in Syria where Russian and French planes are bombing about 4,517 buildings that contained women and children. Also, according to a destruction table about 5,195 “other targets” were destroyed and compared to the total destruction of tanks as only 129 why is their objective to destroy Isis statistics less than the the collateral damage or civilian casualties isn’t the objective to destroy more targets and trying to decrease the amount of pedestrian damage done.

I liked your stand very much because it is very detailed and well explained of what is going on about your topic for an example I liked the part where it said "they were suspected that they were working for Isis". You can also include more research about ISIS for an example you can put down why "Russian and French planes are bombing about 4,517 buildings that contained women and children".
DeleteHave you ever walked home from a long day at school with an empty stomach? That uneasy feeling you get would probably irritated you. World Hunger has been an issue all over the world and people are dying at this very moment because of it. Almost one out of every seven people don’t get enough food and nutrients to stay healthy. Also, 11.3% of the world's population is always hungry. That's about 805 million people in all. In poor countries many people earn less than 1.25 dollars per day. That doesn't seem like enough money to feed yourself or your family. Think about other necessary items you need such as shelter and clothing. How are you going to pay for all of this with just $1.25 a day? Hunger has existed all over the world and has caused a great affect on our society. The problem for many of us it not that we don't get enough food but that we are not consuming the proper nutrients our body needs to be healthy. To stop world hunger we as a society need to work together to make a change. The society can make many changes that will help many people from dying and starving each day.

DeleteWorld Hunger
ReplyDeleteHunger has always been a big problem in the world. In so many parts of the world people have little to no food. Hunger also causes stunting. Globally, 161 million children under-five years old were estimated to be stunted in 2013. So how can we help? There is enough food for every person on earth, people just aren’t receiving it because of poverty, and in some cases, their country can’t get the food either. We need to find a way to stop it.

DeleteHunger affects everyone from where you live to your friends. This affects people young, old and in the middle. Hunger mostly happens in third world countries like ⅔ of southern asia and ⅓ of africa. There is malnutrition which is lack of nutrition and stunted children that look younger than what they are because of hunger. Farmers should donate some crops or the government should save aside some money for people affected by hunger. Each person should pay 5 cents more when paying taxes and that be set aside into a hunger account. A little can go a long way.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm
There is a lot of hunger in Asia and Africa. I agree that this is a very important issue.
DeleteI think your stand is that we need to do something to fight hunger. Right now, by covering the world, I think you are too broad. I think you need to narrow to one area (like in the United States or a specific third-world nation), and then find statistics to prove who is hungry. Your idea about farmers donating raises some questions, like why is the responsibility being put on them? Maybe there is another issue we could address that would help with hunger, such as poverty.
DeleteGlobal Warming is a real problem. The Earth’s temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. Eleven of the past twelve years are the warmest since 1850. The Arctic ice is disappearing. Many scientists believe humans are responsible for most or all of the Earth’s climate change. Things like industrialization, deforestation, pollution and carbon dioxide are increasing the greenhouse gases which keep heat near the surface of the Earth. Global warming is bad because it is going to make the sea levels rise, causing bad flooding, the increased temperatures will make it hard to grow crops causing food shortages and many animals will become extinct because of a change in their ecosystems, disappearing habitats and the oceans becoming more acidic.

This is a real person - and they’re definitely not advertising for attention - he’s struggling with Misophonia. Have you ever felt like you just wanted to run out of the room because someone was chewing too loud? Or maybe, you wanted to cry because someone kept clicking their pen... Then again- maybe YOU are the one slurping your drink like a dog. But If you (or anyone you know) feels severely angry when they hear these noises, you/they could have Misophonia. Hmm, what is Misophonia? Misophonia is a very serious disease that most people pay little attention to... if any at all. To clarify what Misophonia technically means, it is the hatred of noise. But you can also feel disgusted... or even scared! There are different levels of Misophonia, which are: Moderate discomfort to Acute annoyance to Full fledged Anger/Panic/Disgust. People all over the world are suffering, wanting to die because of this disease- when barely anyone pays attention to it, or even knew there is such a thing. But now, you know- and maybe you’ll be more aware of what you’re doing and decide to stop- if anyone gets a little crazy about it.

Your stand is about misophonia and how people should be more conscious about the people around them before they make strange noises. I think you did a great job with this piece. you could have added what the different levels of this disease are.
DeleteIf you have trash, do you think that throwing it into a water body would be good? You’re causing water pollution right there. Some of us don’t know what water pollution even is. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies. When pollutants directly or indirectly discharges into water bodies it is called environmental degradation. Water pollution is a disaster for aquatic water bodies. It is caused in many ways the main ways are sewage and industrial waste discharge. ReplyDeleteGun control and laws are a serious topic at hand in 2015-2016. People should take laws more seriously and always know their actions have consequences. President Obama has made gun control proposal. This proposal limits magazines to a capacity of 10 rounds. This proposal also bans military-style assault weapons. The proposal also wants health professionals (nationwide) to train teachers in case of emergencies. In 2005 president George W. Bush enacted a child safety act. This act gave the evil liability immunity to firearms so manufacturers could not be sued by a gun death victim’s family which is why they did this. This is why gun control and laws are very serious now in 2015-2016.

DeleteMore than two-thirds of Earth is covered by water; less than a third is taken up by land. Most water pollution doesn't begin in the water itself. Infested with garbage, plastic rings and much more, we have created pools of poison. Every time a farmer fertilizes his/ her field, the chemicals are are washed by the rain into groundwater. Smoke stacks release chemicals that can enter the atmosphere and then fall back to earth as rain, entering seas, rivers, and lakes and causing water pollution. Water pollution comes from many different ways. Several people die each day to infected water. however most of this water pollution comes from marine dumping, sewage, and mining activities.

DeleteBullying is a distinctive pattern of humiliating or physically hurting someone, it’s a very durable behavioral style, mostly because bullies get what they want at least at first. Bullies are made, not born and it mostly happens at an young age. Bullies couldn't exist without victims, and they don't pick on just anyone. Bullies usually go for an easy target, they might go for smaller kids and only go back if they got the power from that one person. No one likes a bully, no one likes a victim either but you should help that victim through this time so they don’t feel alone.
ReplyDeleteWhen you see a victim of a bullying you should really act fast before they get seriously hurt. DeleteAnimal Abuse
ReplyDeleteAnimal abuse is a process in where people beat or neglect animals/pets. It is very bad and against the law.
Abuse leads to deformations in animals over a long time of abuse it can also cause miscarriage. If there are pregnant animals who are abused rarely or don't get food often are forced to eat inanimate materials. When people act in a way full of abuse and hate towards animals it can scare these creatures for life physically or mentally. Stop animal abuse but call the authorities. It can be very dangerous putting your life at risk. People might get or be angered at the fact you are doing this. It can lead to you getting hurt. Many cases have pet owners or normal men and women terrorizing animals. The number of animals abuse is at crucially high point.Different kinds of animals get abused cows, dogs, cats, etc.Animals are abused in all places homes farms.
