He found that he was often angry, now: irrationally angry at his groupmates, that they were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on. And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.
He tried. Without asking permission from The Giver, because he feared--or knew--that it would be denied, he tried to give his new awareness to his friends. (99)
What awareness about an issue do you have, or what do you know and understand about some reality that you wish other people could also see, understand and apply to their own lives?
In one paragraph:
- describe an issue that you care about,
- include details from an on-line source to fully describe the issue,
- explain what you want on-line readers to understand about your perspective (without using the words I, my, mine, etc), and
- post a copy of the full url at the end.
Human beings, especially since the industrial revolution, have contributed vast damage to our environment. Almost 69% of the sources where we acquire fresh water is polluted. In addition, while air pollution rates have decreased since 1990, 127 million people worldwide still live in areas where the amount of pollution is more than what is considered healthy for humans. If we want life on this planet to continue, then we need to step up our efforts to cease damaging our environment.

It can be hard to succeed in school for kids with learning disabilities(LD) and/ or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). This could be what leads to bad behaviour. Succees in school comes from being able to complete work, stay organized and focused, and the ability to get along with other peers and people. You also have to be positive about yourself, follow rules, and do your best in school. Signs of bad behaviour in a child are trouble getting along with kids and following directions. Is discouraged and says, “i hate schools.” Is frequently in trouble and sent to the principal's office. None of the normal techniques seem to work. Before we fix a child behaviour, we must understand their necessities. In addition to clothes, shelter and food, we need to provide freedom, belonging, power, and most importantly fun into our schools. Then we will be ready to poise ourselves.
ReplyDeleteURL: http://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/helping-change-behavior/
I think the stand is how to deal with bad behavior from kids with learning disabilities. You should find out the percent of kids with learning disabilities in school and how their disability affects their learning ability and others.
DeleteHave you ever been hungry before dinner, and you want a snack but, your parents say no? Well starvation is about 10 times worse than that. One in every nine people in the world are starving. Starvation causes almost half the deaths of children under the age of 5. Childhood starvation is bad. 3.1 million children die every year from starvation. Think about your childhood. Now imagine that, but being starved. It’s terrible. It's a terrible way to start your life. And for many children, it's a terrible way to end your life. Starvation is bad and we need to find a way for children to have enough food to survive.

DeleteRight now thousands of Islamic State insurgents are storming around Iraq and Syria, two of our biggest allies in the middle east. So, why aren’t we helping them? Well, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine General Dunford, states that the current Iraq-Syria Coalition leader, Army Lieutenant General MacFarland should “not be inhibited for more ground troops,” Dunford and other Congressional members aren’t happy with the President’s limitation on US-led ground forces in Iraq and Syria. Currently, the United States has about 50 Special Operations Command members currently deployed and conducting raids against the Islamic State [of Iraq and Syria], Chairman Dunford has been encouraging more troops in the countries, mainly because the President has limited the aid in the War on Terror to about 3,500 US Military members. President Obama says, “[the] pace of airstrikes is not constrained on the amount of planes and missiles, but to how many effective targets.” Said Obama during the conference in Paris. If the targets are the issue, then why don’t we send in more soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors? 50 Special Ops members/units aren’t enough to stop a war in the making. If the US does not take action, the Islamic State will march right into other countries, countries we may have liberated in the past. The Russian Air Force has been bombing US-backed rebels, rebels whom are fighting ISIS and Assad who is the leader of Syria, the country ISIS is trying to take over. Currently the US has created an ‘Expeditionary Force’ capable of cross-border raids on ISIS in both Iraq and Syria.

I don't think the stand is clear so your stand could be to stop helping the Iraq and Syrian government. You should add more information about how helping them would cause more terror attacks and why. You should also add the stand to the end of the editorial.
DeleteImagine you are at the mall and you see your friends. You wave at them but they don’t wave back. They are ignoring you. That’s ostracism. Ostracism is when people banish, shunn, excluding or ignore you . Some types of ostracism are silent treatment, ignoring you( also emails) and ending a friendship( for no reason ). If that doesn’t seem bad enough there are worse forms. Peer rejection and excommunication are severe forms. Ostracism goes back a very long time. In ancient Athens, Greece citizens could vote to have a citizen removed from the city. Definitely team Sparta! After hearing bad types you would be surprised to hear good types. Surprise! There are good types. Removing yourself from a harmful or threatening environment is okay to do . Everyone should stop bad types of ostracism.
ReplyDeletehttp://ostracism-awareness.com/
Your stand is people should stop bad types of ostracism. I think that you should add why people use ostracism.
DeleteImagine wanting to go to school but not being able to. At first thought, some people might be happy, or think no more homework! But, this is different; we have the privilege of education, whereas the some other don't. In fact, 78 million kids in the world lack an education! Girls make up 54% of that number. Also, 95% of females in Somalia have never even been to school! Despite how many people feel about education, in some parts of the world, even receiving an education is difficult. Maybe you should stop complaining about school, and think about the people who experience this problem.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.humanium.org/en/world/right-to-education/
https://efareport.wordpress.com/2012/11/09/the-bottom-ten-countries-for-female-education/
1. I think your stand could be that more people should get an education.
Delete2. I think you should find out what country has the lowest education rates. Also, things people can do to help the problem.
Have you ever thought what it would be like to be uneducated or drop out of school in middle school? If yes please continue reading to understand why you shouldn’t, if no read it anyways. A surprising amount of people are uneducated or have dropped out of school, more than you would think. “Today, global literacy statistics paint a gloomy picture. Illiteracy threatens over 785 million adults worldwide, translating into one in every five people on the planet, with either no or just basic reading skills. Two-thirds of the illiterate population is women.” People should be able to learn to read, write and etc. as much as anyone else. If everyone was educated, the world could be a much better place for humanity to carry on.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.speakingbooks.com/impact/overview.html
I think your stand is inquire and explore and is and i think that you could add a little more facts in your paragraphs please
DeleteYour stand is that we need to value and practice education much more than we do now. You have some good detail, but I think you might need to research what keeps us from actually obtaining a good education. Also, I have to think there is more information out there in the form of statistics to really prove how uneducated people are.
DeleteHave you ever walked through a store, looked at the product, and got angry that the product was tested on animals before? Well, if you haven't- you will know why some people are well beyond upset about animal testing. Animal testing is used all over the world for products we use. But, is it really needed? Some people think that it’s okay to test thing on animals because they are a lower species on earth and because of this, they don't have any rights. WRONG!!! Just because animals don't speak, doesn't mean that they don't have any say in what's being done to them. Just because animals don’t speak, DOESN’T mean that they have no rights. Animals are more similar to humans then we know. They have goals, desires, feelings, and needs. More importantly though, they have internal organs that function just like us. Also, animals get hurt a lot in the process of animal testing. Over 100 million animals are crippled, burned, and poisoned in the animal testing process every year. In my opinion animal testing shouldn’t be allowed because it's cruel, and unneeded. So, tell me… Do we really need facial products etc, and pesticide, when we pay the price with the deaths of innocent animals?
ReplyDeleteurl;http://www.peta.org/blog/top-five-reasons-stop-animal-testing/
Your stand is clear: this cruel testing should not be happening. I think you need to find information to really show how the testing is cruel; this would mean finding some examples of the different types of testing and what happens to the animals in each one.
DeleteToday many kids have learned how to swear since elementary school from a variety of different resources. Some of those resources include TV, music, parents, and pop culture where the people throw around a couple words not exactly realizing their audience. Some kids think this type of language is “cool” or will show people they are more mature. Many young people should not have to feel they need to be “cool” or change, and they shouldn’t have to start using bad language.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A44779-2005Apr11.html
1.The stand is clear, it's that kids should not be swearing.
Delete2.Maybe you could add more detail about the negative effects of swearing.
Incurable diseases
ReplyDeleteHow would you feel to know that you have an incurable disease? How would it feel to know that you would have to live with it for the rest of your life? Incurable diseases are illnesses that don't have a treatment…yet. From polio to cancer; people have not been able to find ways to aid threatening diseases completely. Why don't researchers focus more on stem cell research? After all, if stem cells are coming into medications, our scientists should be able to use stem cells for incurable diseases. Right? The problem is: how are researchers suppose to control stem cells? Researchers are working with rats to figure this out. Our society should focus more on how to cure diseases with no treatments. Not getting caught up in trends that really don't matter. We need to help our researchers and scientists. Our doctors and professors too. Let's find a way to cure incurable diseases.
URL:
http://www.dailycal.org/2014/03/02/stem-cell-research-may-unlock-secrets-incurable-diseases/
Your stand was some what clear but after rereading it I understood what you were trying to say. I think the stand is that trends don't matter because they are not important but incurable diseases are. We should help doctors and researchers look for a cure. I think you should add more facts and add a percentage of how many doctors (worldwide) are trying to find a cure to incurable diseases. You had a lot of opinion but this paragraph could have more facts. Over all I think your paragraph was engaging and a great topic to write about!
DeleteOne issue in our society is child hunger. This year, nearly 9 million children under the age of 5 will die from something which we could’ve prevented. More than half will die from hunger related causes. Some of these needless deaths are straight up starvation, but some die from typical diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, and measles. Children can easily catch these diseases because the children are weakened by hunger. The cause of starvation might be “In the developing world, more than 1.4 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1.25 per day.” If we want to help this issue we need to step up to help these needless deaths.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.freedomfromhunger.org/world-hunger-facts
I think you need a more interesting intro. You could maybe do "Do you remember the time that you were so hungry you could eat anything? Well many kids have even worse than that."I also think you should find out which countries have the most starving kids.
DeleteCyberbullying has caused kids to lead to depression, suicide, and future mental health issues. The main cause of cyberbullying is suicide, mainly because of depression, usually the two come hand-in-hand when talking about cyberbullying. Facebook is the most common social media found for cyberbullying. 89% to 95% of teens and kids who use social media have a Facebook account. Teens typically suffer cyber bullying in silence because they are afraid that if they tell their parents or guardian, they will get in trouble for not making them aware of the issue.Face-to-face bullying is easier to stop then cyberbullying. Family’s and school's can’t control what happens on the internet unlike at school or a public place. Because of cyberbullying people are feeling horrible about themselves so much to commit suicide. They feel like they don’t have a purpose except being the bullies victim online. Nobody should make somebody else feel that way about themselves.
ReplyDeleteURL: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/social-media-cyber-bullying-linked-to-teen-depression/
I think your stand is that You want cyber bullying to stop because it harms people way more than face to face bullying. Maybe you should add a short story about someone being bullied because you already have enough statistics
Delete
ReplyDeleteBullying is an everyday issue. This issue is a solemn and immense thing that happens to kids. This issue also sometimes leads to suicidal thoughts, and kids also commit suicide! This is a problem we don’t bother to think about. Bystanders and teachers barely take matter into their own hands, and that is an enormous problem in our society. We should try to prevent bullying. Examples of suicide are depression and sadness, self- injuries, talking about death, not eating or sleeping, and other things of that nature. Many students have attempted suicide, and bullying usually triggers that. There are many suicidal attempts every year, and some people consider it when it comes to bullying. In addition about 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and 7 percent of people have tried to commit suicide. Humans should stop this immense issue. Bystanders should stop standing there idly and compel the bully to stop. People should be earnest and conscientious with this problem. We should all get together and end bullying for good!
www.bullyingstatistics.org/content/bullying-and-suicide.html
Amanda,I think your stand is to end bullying and self harm caused by bullying. Another fact that you could add could be how many people are bullied. You could also add a specific story of one getting bullied. And what they did, If they're alive, Still affected, depressed...
DeleteDo you ever wonder how can I make the world a better place? One way you can help is by saving the environment. We need to make the environment a better place to live in. We should try to save energy. We use a lot of energy which is not great for the environment. We also need to try and save water. We need water for plants and trees. Trees need to be watered so they can grow because trees give off oxygen ( we need oxygen). I believe that saving the environment is the best. We need to try and save the environment by recycling, not littering, watering plants and making sure to turn anything off that is not in use.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=288&id=2651
Kaelyn, I think your stand is that we should do more to protect the environment. You could add more ways that we need to protect the environment and how we can do that.
DeleteOne thing that really bothers me is when people judge other people for silly things like their clothes, hair, and or makeup! It really shows an impact on the person who is getting judged. They may get depressed, start not wanting to go to schools because they know that they are going to get judged again. There are too many judgemental people out in this world, and a lot of those people come from schools around the world. Kids everyday get bullied, and get judged, and itÅ› not fair. From my perspective, I see people get judged, I know people who judge others, and I'm not one of those rude and obnoxious people! I would never want to be judged for the way I look, itÅ› who I am, so why would I want anyone else to feel that way, to feel insecure about themselves. It needs to end, it needs to stop LetÅ› take a stand and end judging for good!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fastcompany.com/3048872/know-it-all/how-to-deal-with-judgmental-people
I like your stand. I like the idea of taking a stop to bullying and judging of other individuals so people dont feel bad about their insecurities. Another thing you could add is maybe research how you can stop it? or you can research how bad it is effecting people.
DeleteHave you ever gone to a website and seen someone post an exceptionally stupid question like “Is a egg a fruit or vegetable?” Chances are you have. In that post found from makeuseof.com, we can see how naive people are losing common sense, and how they are incapable of using proper writing mechanics. Some think that literacy is obsolete since we have spellcheck, auto correct and other tools online, yet those will fail in the ever competitive job market. A recent study shows that Americans have lost an average of one collective intelligence point. This is an ongoing problem that connects the no child left behind act in the American school systems, and the advanced technology of the twenty first century, that is allowing people to not use common sense, therefore making them dumber. We should all use common sense to be more intelligent people.
ReplyDeleteURL: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/getting-dumber-stupidity-just-visible-online/
Your stand isn't very clear. You might not want to add in so many details about other things like literacy, intelligence, and common sense because there isn't one clear central idea. You might want to find out how average intelligence has declined over the years, and how people can stop doing things that are making them "dumber."
DeleteBullies are a problem today because when people are bullied no one stands up or tells someone else. But really people who stand by and watch others be bullied are just as responsible as the bully is. About 42% of kids have been bullied while online with 1 in 4 being verbally attacked more than once. Bullying statistics show that 1 in 4 kids will be bullied sometime throughout their period between puberty and adulthood in human development. Not speaking out, not talking about how wrong bullying is, and turning the other way, does not make bullying stop.

1.I think the stand is stop bullying.
Delete2. I think you should find out and explain more about what to say or do to stop bullying for your editorial.
Racism is a huge problem in our world today. The topic of racism also comes with the topic of judging. Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another, but how did this whole “racism” idea come to be? Why is someone better than you if they have blue eyes? Why are you stronger than someone if you have white skin? In the year of 1960, 45% of people said if a black family moved close to them or became their neighbor, they would move immediately. This percentage has decreased since then but there is still a percentage of people that would move. Another graph shows in 1945 about 70% of people said that black students and white students should go to different schools. Once again this percentage has gone down but our world can not stop until 0% of people say these things. The world needs to stop racism soon, before it’s too late.

1. The stand was very clear - I think it is the first sentence... "Racism is a huge problem in our world today."
Delete2. I think you did a great job balancing the facts and the writing... but all the facts are clumped right near each other. You may want to have the second sentence be a fact... and then a few sentences down put a fact or two... Not all near each other. You could also add how that we can stop racism or people that are trying to stop. Your writing was really engaging and I think you did a fantastic job!

ReplyDeleteGlobal Warming
Do you want your great great great grandchildren to live on mercury? Well if we keep polluting the world with gasses then that’s what it would be like in around 1,000,000 years.
Global Warming is problematic around the world. Even though the U.S. emits about 40 percent of the world's total pollution Russia emits the most pollution in the world. Because of global warming the hurricane named “Sandy” was influenced. Also the record drought in California was partially because of global warming. It happens when gasses like carbon dioxide thicken the blanket of clouds and gases which trap more heat in the earth therefore making the world hotter. people need to drive less and at least buy hybrid cars. One of the main reasons that people don’t buy electric cars is because of the lack of electric car chargers so more gas stations need to build electric car chargers. We need to to be considerate of the generations before us.

Homework
ReplyDeleteHomework, most kids don't enjoy it. Homework gives kids stress. Kids have seven hours of school then come home and have about 1 hour of homework. Kids need time to relax after school. Homework is not letting kids have any time to do what they want. Homework is used to show what you know to teachers, so teachers mostly make some of the homework hard. This causes kids to give up faster at school. You are supposed to do the homework at home, but wouldn't that be easier for the student to cheat, because they could just have someone else do it for them. This web site below said that 47% of dads admitted to doing their kids homework to ease the stress. And 39% of the moms also admit to doing the homework. http://stophomework.com/new-survey-43-percent-of-parents-have-done-their-kids-homework/288 I don't think we should have that much homework or any homework at all.
http://www.debate.org/polls/should-homework-be-banned5
I'm not so sure about your stand but I think a good stand would be that kids should get less homework because you give a lot of information about parents doing their kids homework and how that kids get some what of a lot homework. You could gather more information about how maybe some kids don't understand some of their homework and maybe that some kids feel like they have too much homework. You could also use some information about how the kids feel about their homework.
DeletePollution
ReplyDeletePollution. There are different types of pollution. Three types which are water, land and air pollution. They are all equally as bad. Land pollution is where a bunch of garbage and waste is not thrown out but it's thrown all over the planet. People in america produced 250 million tons of waste in 2010(4.3 pounds per person per day). Thats a lot of waste. Water pollution is where trash/chemicals are thrown into the water. 64% of lakes aren't clean enough for fish and swimming. Air pollution is when toxic gases are spewed into the air. 2 million people die every year due to air pollution.
http://www.livescience.com/22728-pollution-facts.html
1. I think the stand is to stop pollution.
Delete2. You have a good amount of facts to support your stand but you should state what people are doing to help stop pollution and what people think about this. Otherwise great job.
Admit it, you hate homework. So do I, everyone does. Do teachers give too much homework? Many parents don’t care how much homework you get, it’s what type of homework you’re assigned. Parents also play a role in homework, its DOING their kids homework. 15% of parents 18-24 years old have done their kids homework. 45% of parents 25-44 have committed of doing their child's homework. 47% of those parents are dads! Surveys say 778 parents have committed to the ‘crime’. Not as many parents as you would think actually HELP their kids with their homework. Some day homework will become history, but by then I would probably be in my mid 70s.

Nice job Ben! Your stand is a little hard to tell, I think your stand is that homework has no point. I just think that you should add information about how much time homework consumes. That would make your stand a lot easier to identify. Otherwise you did a Great Job!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteTrophy Hunting
ReplyDeleteTrophy hunting is a problem that has gotten a lot
backlash over the past few years and despite the obvious moral problems with this problem and all the Controversy from the Cecil the Lion case( which some people took out of proportion), People still decide to pay thousands of dollars to go to African and take part in what people call Big Game hunting. The purpose of this (if there is one) is more for sentimental purposes than anything else. Can stop people from doing this? No since it’s legal, but they could try to make the process more complicated. I don’t know maybe it’s my childish naivety or my unrelenting ego, but i can see a problem that could be simply solved if we tried.
http://www.idausa.org/campaigns/wild-free2/habitats-campaign/anti-hunting/hunters/trophy-hunting/
I think your stand is to make big game hunting more complicated so that they can't kill the animals just for fun. I'm still not sure what trophy hunting is, you should put the definition.
DeleteThe stand is not to clear for me,a stand you could use is America has to take better care of its allies, especially if that allies in pain. Also for more supporting detail you could put more examples of how america should of and could of helped Africa.
ReplyDeleteHunger in America
ReplyDeleteMany people in America are struggling to put food on the table. Most likely you do not think about hunger often or at all but did you know that 1 in 6 Americans are facing hunger, or that 1 in 3 Latinos or Africans in America are facing hunger? Many Americans throw food away every day over 40% of food is thrown away. Also 1 in 3 children are facing hunger. Also 49 million Americans can not afford food to support themselves or their families. So think about that next time you throw your food away.
www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america
www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/...hunger/h
I think the stand was a lot of Americans are going hungry so think about what you are wasting. I think you can state the stand a little clearer.
DeleteYour stand is a bit confusing: are you trying to encourage me to stop throwing away food or to start doing something to help feed the hungry. I don't think you can do both in an editorial. If you choose simply proving we need action against hunger, than you need more information to prove it exists, and I have to think it is closely related to poverty. If you want to convince me that we should stop wasting food, then you need to find and include a lot more information to prove it happens.
DeleteI think that your stand is that we need to stop wasting food and instead buy less food and donate leftover food to the poor.
ReplyDeleteThe stand is not clear , you should add more detail about america not giving enough money to other countries but you do have very much detail about Ebola.
ReplyDeleteThe stand was very clearly said. The U.S.A should help out with protecting people in other countries. I think that you should add details on how many people we did help compared to how many we didn´t help.

.Everyday someone gets judge, everyday someone doesn’t want to go to school because they are scared, everyday there is someone who is insecure. It shouldn’t be this way! Someone I know was judged by tons of people in school and out of school! She is older, seventeen now. She was judged because she was had things other people didn’t she is very pretty which is something people should be telling her instead of being mean about it. It’s no reason to judge someone because they have something you don’t. Being pretty is not something a friend looks for they look for kindness and this girl has kindness the looks are just a plus. You are probably thinking that’s not a big deal what could someone say about your looks to make you feel bad. This girl went through a rough time she was sad, she would go out every night drinking doing stuff that could get her into trouble. But then she realized these girls aren’t worth getting upset about so she is now a better person, but she did things that she can’t take back all because of the people who judged her. Judging needs to end no matter how big or how small the judging is! It hurts to be judged it sucks being judged and watching someone you care about get judged no one deserves it. That’s put an end to this.
