Video Games can be beneficial.
ReplyDeleteAn average child or teen plays 1 hour of video games a day. Most research would say that this is harmful to their health. However, there needs to be some reconsideration. We cannot just focus on the negatives and ignore the benefits of playing video games. A stunning example of this "hidden" side of games is fold-it. Fold-it is a game where you attempt to score the highest by using the different tools included by folding a protein molecule. This game has competitions that feature a certain protein and everyone competes to get the highest score. In doing so these challengers help scientists by having those experienced in puzzle solving find the best layout for the protein. This process in 2010 found a solution to a virus in monkeys very similar to AIDS. Aside from this video games have been shown to improve focus and time allocation. These features are prominently linked to shooter games whose benefits equal or exceed formal high school and University courses targeting the same areas.

Did you know, after the world epidemic and lockdown known as Covid-19, depression and anxiety rates swelled by 25%? Now, even after the lockdown has been released, 59% of people are concerned about their mental health, their friends' mental health, or their family members' mental health. The terrible thing is, according to CNBC, approximately 380 people out of 1,000 need money assistance to go to therapy, and a lot of others are cutting their visits down from three or four times a month to once a month. Why would they need assistance in the first place? Well, because of inflation, the average cost for one therapy visit is now 178$, not including gas money to get there, money for prescription pills, or money for babysitters for children. And because of inflation, all of those extra costs could keep increasing until it's completely unaffordable.

Does "Video games are bad for you" ring a bell? If it did then you may be one of the millions of people who have fallen under those misapprehensions. "One of the many stereotypes is the socially isolated gamer. But contrary to that more than 70% of gamers play with a friend and millions participate in virtual worlds" says Isabella Granic Ph.D. There are many benefits to playing video games naming just a handful, it helps S.T.E.M. subjects in school, it helps your mood when playing satisfying games, it encourages sharing, cooperation and most games also improve problem-solving and reaction time. If you are stressed, maybe try a game like candy crush. If you are exited, try an action game. There is always something that can make you feel good. So stop looking at only a handful of bad ramifications and look at the bountiful supply of benefits.

Are you aware that the average person consumes 50% more than what should be consumed? Each year, our population goes up by around 80 million, and the estimated population in 2100 is 10.8 billion. Our population has become so huge to the point that earth is unable to regenerate what we need each year. One cause of this is that we now have a higher life expectency due to new advanced medicines, technology, etc. Additionally, an imbalance of births and deaths has contributed to the overpopulation of our species. In 1990, there were 8.8 million infant deaths. In 2017, there were 4.1 million deaths of infants. The amount of deaths have decreased immensely. Another cause is women who do not use birth control to its full potential due to their beliefs, society norms and a lack of planning for families, and it has led to unwanted births, increasing the population. As a result, there's been an increased need for resources and climate change.

Bodies come in all shapes in sizes, right? Of course, but body shaming is the thing that gets in the way of everything.
ReplyDeleteNobody has the "perfect" body everyone claims they might have, but sometimes ads and companies claim to make us feel that the perfect body does exist. Body shaming is something that mainly targets someone's body image, it is most of the time negative. body shaming can target something such as weight, height, shape, features. Most people who experience body shaming claim it to be their weight the most. Though body image can be something targeted it can also be the level of confidence someone might have; that sounds unbelievable, right? It's not. Many teenage girl's who feel confident and upload a picture get attacked with many grown or teenage people commenting about their bodies. I understand body shaming doesn't sound completely harmful mentally or physically; but the side effects are impulsive buying, Skipping meals, and mental issues such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or a series of EDs. Almost 90% of teenage girl's posts contain the words "Obese" or "Fat!" in their comments. Frontiers shows that Instagram's algorithm disapproves larger influencers posts or rapidly deletes them. Not only that, 71% of adolescents report being about their weight in the past year, the amount of weight discrimination has dramatically spiked up in the US by 66% between 1995-2006. How can you stop or at least help body shaming? Speak up, see someone getting discriminated, reconsider your words that could hurt someones image, and learn more about what it impacts. Does 1- degree celcius sound like a lot to you? That is how much the earth has warmed due to global warming.Global warming has caused climate, global, bio and natural disaster. It is a terrible problem and hundreds of animal species have been wiped out and gone extinct due to this terrible and disastrous problem. So while fossil fuels do supply the vast majority of the world's energy they do not come without consequences. In fact once the temperature rises .5 degrees more the sea will rise even further, and entire ecosystems will be submerged and be completely wiped out. Some companies like Bp are spending millions of dollars on advertising about their cleaner natural gasses while in reality, nearly 100% of their annual expenditure is still on oils and gasses.

Why work when you can enjoy yourself?
ReplyDelete6% or 9.7 million Americans are actively trying to find jobs. “Maybe an unemployed person spends several additional days unemployed because of the $300,” Professor Dube said. “But if it’s a problem, it takes care of itself. It’s nothing compared to the broader trajectory of the reopening, which swamps anything on the unemployment insurance front.” And Professor Marinescu, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania said “right now what seems to be happening is that job creation is outpacing the search effort that workers are putting forth,” The government's goals should be to get everyone working and continue providing economic support. Data states why work when unemployment insurance — including a $300 weekly supplement. means that some people can make as much or more by not working? And the combined $2,000-per-person cash payments enacted since late last year created a cushion people can rely on for a time which people are getting too comfortable with.

Do people tell you your fear is “all in your head” or “there's nothing to be afraid of?” Do they just not get you? Jerilyn Ross says,”Phobias are real.” She is a licensed clinical social worker, and president of the ADAA, (Anxiety Disorders Association of America) She says, “People should not feel ashamed. For some reason, their bodies do this. Phobias are serious and can be treated.” Ross is familiar with phobias, she works with them, and she has them. She has overcome a serious fear of being trapped in tall buildings. It’s strange, but genuine. Ross says, “People with phobias are always aware that their fear doesn't make any sense. But they cannot face it." Studies show that most people with phobias don’t encounter any sort of experience that would cause them to be scared. It turns out that phobias get passed down from your ancestors. That's why people can’t help but be scared. Phobias are learned behaviors that can’t be unlearned, but there is a way to override new learning. This is called exposure therapy. You would start small, and gradually take baby steps to the real thing. For example, to get over a fear of snakes, you would start with holding a rubber snake, then watching a snake at the zoo, and finally, you would take a picture of yourself holding a snake, to keep with you when you need a reminder. To answer the question, “Does treatment stay forever?” Rothbaum says, “It's like losing weight. You have to stick with diet and exercise to stay thin."

Do you think it's difficult to be left handed? Around 90 percent of the world is right handed. The remaining 10 or so percent is left handed. Imagine now, being lefted handed (if you're not already). There are many difficult problems. For example, in school, you are forced to walk on the right side of the hallway. From something as simple as using a mouse to writing, you can face a massive barrier. If you're left handed, you have two options for using a mouse. One of your options would be to use a mouse that is left handed. That by itself is very hard to come by, and usually very expensive. A right handed mouse is very hard to use. For example, from the popular gaming mouse company Glorious, the Glorious Model I is right handed. Completely. There is a little bit of mouse sticking out from the left side. That is to comfort right handed people. But if you're left handed, it will be very uncomfortable or almost unusable for long periods of time. Your other option for using a mouse is to get an ambidextrous mouse. Those types are luckily easier to find. It's unfair how left handed people have a lot of problems in the world, especially because there are almost 1 billion left handed people. A lot of things say "built for comfort," but if you're left handed, it's the complete opposite.

Have you ever experienced gender inequality? Ever been treated differently for something as little as your sex? Gender inequality is a big problem throughout the whole world, a problem that has been happening for centuries, yet still doesn't get enough attention. Gender inequality is when someone is treated differently or discriminated against because of their gender or other personal traits, and can be affecting people who are woman, part of the LGBTQ+ community, part of different races, and many more. Just think of everyone you come into contact with on a daily based, most people fall into just those few categories named, as well as many more. They are experiencing types discrimination such as violence, abuse, and poverty; forced to make being treated biased and unfairly part of their daily lifestyle. Every human has the right to be treated equal with the same rights as everyone else, no matter what they look like or what qualities they possess.

ReplyDeleteDid you know that football, while fun, can be an extremely dangerous sport that can lead to suicide and even homicide? Concussions in football have been linked to CTE. CTE stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Basically your brain can turn into swiss cheese! For example ,Aaron Hernandez killed someone and then committed suicide. When they studied his brain they found that he had a really bad case of CTE. In 2019 there were 224 concussions in the NFL. The NFL should consider more serious consequences for actions that could lead to concussions. I think that the NFL should kick players who continually put other players in danger of concussions out of games, just like they do with red flags in soccer.

ReplyDeleteYou might have had ham, or a burger for dinner before. But have you ever eaten dog? To us, dogs are household residents. You have probably heard the phrase “A man's best friend.”
But in South Korea you might as well say “A man’s best meal.”
In different locations across Asia dogs are snatched from streets, backyards or even bought from their owners. A whopping 30 million dogs are captured per year for consumption. Once caught, they are driven to one out of thousands of meat farms. The dogs are kept in small cages; some are unable to move. Most if not all dogs are sick, injured, afraid, or starved. Weeks prior they are taken to a slaughter house to be beaten to death by a long metal pole. Later to be left to bleed out from a cut on the dog's throat. It is unbelievable what people are willing to do for a meal or for a nice fur coat. There are many suffering dogs in the world and they need to be rescued from these horrid conditions. I don’t think the relationship between humans and animals should be like this, what do you think?

Poaching is a serious issue because it impacts ecosystem. The ecosystem is impacted because killing of endagered animals. Rhinos population has decreased by 97% over the last 100 years according to the [IUCN }.International Union Of For Conservation of Nature. The effects that poaching can have is that they can sell the meat of animals on the black market and people that eat it can get diseases and possibly die. ReplyDeleteSharks, the biggest, scariest predator in the big blue sea. But, did you know that they are actually one of the most endangered marine species. They are being killed just because of their fins. A shark's dorsal fins are currently on the market for five hundred dollars, the dorsal fin is only one to five percent of the shark's body. That means that the other ninety-five percent of the shark is being left in the ocean to suffocate or bleed out. Two of the main sharks being affected by this are the Scalloped Hammerhead and the Smooth Hammerhead. Between 1.3 and 2.7 million of these two sharks are being killed every year. With the Hammerheads dying their prey, rays will continue to populate, which means less scallops, claims, and bivalves. This ripple effect harms human fisheries and coastal resorts that make money off of the wildlife. This giant ripple effect will continue to happen to the other species of wildlife if we continue to kill off different breeds of sharks. Sharks are important for biodiversity and without them our beautiful bodies of water are going to turn into fishy slimy messes. But, there is a way to fix it. Right now, a shark over its lifetime can cost 1.6 millions dollars, which is a whole lot more expensive than the two hundred dollars that one fin can sell for. If we stop killing sharks the dangerous ripple effect which throws off our entire ecosystem.

Did you know that empathy is the key to emotional intelligence. A person who is empathetic "sees the world through someone else's eyes." People who are looking to improve being empathetic can take training classes to work on being a more empathic person. Empathy can be simply looking at someone's body language and listening closely to what they have to say. If a person is kind and thoughtful of others feelings they are being empathic. It is thinking about another person's perspective. The key word to describe empathy is being connected to another person. When someone is empathetic towards others they show kindness.

ReplyDeleteAre you aware that more than 100 million animals are dead from animal testing? The majority of companies and places still use testing, which is unnecessary, outdated and cruel. Animal testing burns, poisons, and cripples animals, causing the deaths of more and more animals each year. During a cosmetic testing experiment, Humane Society Factsheet said, "They rub chemicals on shaved skin or dripped into the eyes without any pain relief." Since these animals are getting tortured, you would probably think that these animals are protected by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), but some aren't. To add on, 92% of drugs tested don't get approval to even be used. "Relying on animal experimentation in some cases impedes and delays discovery of drugs and procedures that may be beneficial to humans because they fail in animal testing," said Abigail Greer. This just shows how useless testing is, because it doesn't even help the discovery of products that could be greatly constructive for us. Furthermore, this also affects humans too. 1.5 million pounds of animal waste was produced in 3 years. The animal waste makes up all of our food, and already contains chemicals from testing. All the food from the animals are intoxicated and/or poisoned from all the tests it went through. This might lead to some major effects on us such as diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

ReplyDeleteDo you realize how many children there are in the foster care system in New York who need a home? In 2021, New York had over 11,000 foster homes, but more than 16,000 kids needed foster homes. There were not enough foster parents. More kids are entering the foster system than available parents. There were 600 kids needing adoption!! Fostering can be challenging, which is why fewer people may go through training to become a foster parent. Foster parent Kayla Ambesi said, “Tensions are high. Everybody’s emotional. You just had a removal. So just working through that with the families and the child, that’s kind of the toughest part, at least initially.” New York can increase the amount of foster homes by making trainings and classes shorter and easier to access and by offering financial incentives to foster parents.

ReplyDeleteThe highlight of the school day for many young kids is recess. Recess is a brief break from normal school where kids get to play and have fun. Recess provides many benefits to childrens' physical, mental, and social health. Research shows that recess makes kids more ready to learn, and even makes them smarter! Unfortunately, recess is getting shorter; studies show that kids only get an average of 24-27 minutes of recess a day, down from 37 minutes in 2001, according to No Child Left Behind. On top of that, only 58.9 percent of school districts even require schools to give students recess. Kids who do not get recess have higher levels of stress, and have a harder time completing their work. In conclusion, recess needs to be incorporated into more childrens' school days. If this happens, kids will get better grades and they will have better lives.

ReplyDeleteDo you know about the problem with plastic pollution? Plastic pollution is a very huge problem. When small fish eat plastic, the plastic they eat moves up the food chain when they are eaten. When fish that have eaten plastic are eaten by humans, the humans could be harmed by the plastic. More than half of the turtle population has eaten plastic. Turtles could mistake plastic for food and choke. When turtles eat plastic they leave less space in their stomachs for real food so the turtles could starve. Seabirds have been found with stomachs full of plastic. There is not even a single square mile in the ocean that doesnt have a piece of plastic in it. All the plastic in the ocean is expected to outweigh all the fish in the ocean by 2050. Hopefully this motivated you to recycle your plastic and try and do something against plastic pollution.
