Think of a person you look up to or admire based on a value he/she has or had (the person doesn’t need to still be alive). In one paragraph:
- discuss the value (values listed in Reading section of L.A. Binder on website) of the person that you look up to or admire, and
- use details from the person’s life and/or experiences to demonstrate the existence of the value.
One person I look up to would be my grandfather. He grew up on a poor farm in Berne Knox, which was a hard life. He worked extremely hard, because he knew from a young age that he wanted to go to college. He worked two part time jobs, and he went to school on top of it. By the age of 18 he had enough money to go to college. He was the first person in his family to go to college so it was a huge accomplishment. He graduated with a masters degree and then moved on to writing seven books on history that are used in schools across the country. His story is full of perseverance, and responsibility, he had a goal and eventually got to it. It took a lot of hard work and effort but it eventually paid off. That is why I look up to my grandfather.
ReplyDeleteAbbie, the way you describe your grandfather seems as if he is the dearest thing to your heart, and I can see the love that you have for him. When he had to working and going to school, it must've been rough for him, and since he was the first one in the family to go to college. I can see why you look up to him.
DeleteOne person that I really admire is my older sister. She is over 7 years older than me, and has always been a huge role model in my life. She’s always kind to others, and even though she’s extremely busy, still finds time to spend with me. She plans things out, knows all her appointments, and sticks to her promises. I know I can rely on her if I ever need anything, even though she’s usually halfway across the country at college. She will add more things to her already busy schedule to help others, but unfailingly accomplished her tasks as someone we all know we can turn to as the reliable one. My sister is an amazing person, and I’m glad that she’s someone I can depend on.
ReplyDeleteI like how you added a ton of detail and reasons as why you admire her. She sounds like she is very caring and reasonable, and she sounds like a good person to admire.
DeleteGreat job.
It’s a name everyone recognizes. He’s rich but hasn’t let it get to the better of him. Bill Gates is a prime example of someone who was luckier off than others, and chose to give time and money away to the less fortunate. Bill Gates not only donates millions and billions of dollars to charity every year, but he also donates his time to help others. He helps countless amounts of people he doesn’t know each and every day. Bill Gates also doesn’t plan to give away his fortune to his children. He doesn’t want all of his wealth to stay just in his family, but instead it should help other people as well. He doesn’t want his children to be spoiled while others are barely getting by. By giving to others we’re giving to ourselves, making ourselves a better person. While the average person can’t donate as much money as Bill Gates, just donating a little bit of your time is enough to help someone out.
ReplyDeleteIan, your choice of Bill Gates is inspiring, and I did not know he did all that to the less fortunate. It is absolutely amazing he does this.
DeleteHe is worthy of admiration because he gives to many people. He is not greedy with his money like some people are. And he works hard to get to where he wants to be.
DeleteSomeone that I admire in my life is my Brother. I admire him for many reasons but I mainly do for his ability to pick up a trade and just latch onto it and master it. He has demonstrated this throughout his life on many occasions. First off when He was around ten he started taekwondo and achieved his second-degree black belt. He also started to play guitar when he was around 12 as well. He taught himself to play after watching youtube and can now play many challenging songs. He is still playing guitar today and has not picked up another musical attribute; this being producing. He started producing beats to music because he had a passion for it and really liked it, much like how he liked the guitar. He has more recently been showing me these beats that he has produced through FL studio. I have to say in only a few months of acquiring this program he has really mastered it. He mastered it because he has the determination and a perfectionist view when it comes to it. And that is a skill I have really admire about him. Yes, I have hobbies as well but I'm not really good at putting my heart into it like he does. That's a person with a skill that I really admire.
ReplyDeleteI think that your brother is a great choice as a person that you admire because you have shown that he has mastered many things that he has tried
DeleteMy dad has lots of faith in me. That is one of the main reasons I admire him so much. He is always pushing me to do the my best in school, sports, and other things like that. One way he shows faith in me is by bringing me to the gym and to football fields. At the gym he always adds weights and number of reps when your only supposed to increase one. At the gym he also makes me increase the speed on the treadmill. At fields we do speed and agility training. When there he will not let me leave until I bet a certain time on the 40 yard dash and suttle drill. Everytime we go he lowers the time to make it harder on me. Also he will take away my phone, computer, or other electronics if I don’t get above a certain grade on a test or project. This all shows that he wants me to do my best and he has faith that I can. In the long run I know this will make me better and I thank him for that.
ReplyDeleteYour dad seems like a really cool guy. I can see why you admire him so much. The way he pushes you to become a better football player is awesome. The fact that he has time to help you be a better football player. Also the fact he has a lot of faith in you is the best thing ever.
DeleteEver feel like you are sick of the same old routine and want change? This is how my sister, Sandy felt when she decided to become an artist. Most of my family and ancestors are in the medical field, making a difference. My sister wanted to change the same routine by introducing something new to our family. She showed the values of Confidence and dedication. She was confident when she made the decision to go to art school and make a real career out of art. She was showed dedication when she started working on her art skills more and really committed to art as her official career for the future. When she decided everyone was happy about her decision.
ReplyDeleteYour sister Sandy is very worthy of admiration because she did not give up like most people do today. Sandy also had the confidence to go into a total different field of work than her family which takes hard work and determination. Sandy seems like a great person to look up to.
DeleteWe all have challenges in life. Some are harder than others. When 10 year old Josh Sundquist learns he has bone cancer, his life quickly becomes different. His time is often spent at the hospital rather than being with friends. He is often in pain rather than being happy. Soon after the news, Joshua gets his left leg amputated. This made life hard and frustrating. There were many everyday things Josh could no longer do. Even walking became a challenge. Joshua fought through his tough times and gained needed courage. Josh got a prosthetic leg weeks later. It was difficult to adjust to at first but he got the hang of it. Now, Josh is a 13 year old boy who resumed his normal teenage life. He loves play sports and even won medals in skiing. Josh teaches us that you must take risks and have courage in order to conquer life's toughest challenges.
ReplyDeleteJosh deserves admiration because of the tough time he has experienced. He went through having bone cancer; He was very much in pain at the time of that. The reason you need these characteristics in life today, is because you need strength to not give up in life. Also, Josh was brave and was not afraid to gt his Leg amputated.
DeleteDo you ever feel as if there is an obstacle in front of you that you can’t overcome? That there is nothing you can do about it? Drew Brees went from reshaping a bad team, to having a bad injury, to being one of the best in Football. His perseverance kept him in the game. He was drafted in 2001 by the San Diego Chargers. He was the 32nd pick in the second round of the draft, and barely started for the Chargers. He eventually had a shoulder injury, and the Chargers decided to let him go into free agency. He was then drafted by the Saints who at that time were a horrible team in need of a quarterback. He tried hard to turn that team around, and in 2010, he took his team to the Super Bowl and they won it. Brees was named MVP of the Super Bowl. He is still on the team right now, and the Saints are in the playoffs. Perseverance can get you far in this world.
ReplyDeleteDrew Brees is a great person. We need more hard working people like him in the world today.
DeleteOne person I admire is my grandfather. He has strived to do many things in his life and has accomplished many things. As a teenager he went to the gym on a regular schedule. He dedicated himself to getting stronger. In college you don't have a lot of free time but in the small amount of time you had my grandfather choose to work out. As a result of his dedication, in college he was able to lift cars above his head. After that he joined the Navy were he spent some time working for the Navy. Sadly he was thrown off the Navy because he slept walked. When your on a ship that rocks back and forth and you sleep walk, you very well might find yourself waking up to the ice cold water slowly consuming you. Yet, even after knowing he slept walked, he still wanted to stay on the Navy. This is why I admire my grandfather for his dedication to his goals even when things got in his way.
ReplyDeleteyour grandfather seems like a good guy. we need more people in this world to work out just like your grandfather did. Also he's done our country a huge favor by being in the navy. I see how you admire him so much for all the hard work he did serving our country.
DeleteIn the narrative “Leave the Last Cookie”, Emily demonstrates unselfishness in her act of leaving the last cookie for others. Unselfishness a quality that means putting other people’s needs before your own, and valuing other people above yourself. Unselfishness is demonstrated when a person allows other people to have what they want, instead of putting themselves first. In her narrative, Emily demonstrates unselfishness by leaving the last cookie for all the other people also yearning to have it, though she herself also longs the claim the cookie. Also, Emily doesn’t repeatedly praise herself for her noble qualities and difficult sacrifice but instead focuses most of her story on the values of others and why they deserve the cookie, showing that she is not egocentric and is unselfish because she doesn’t focus entirely on herself and her needs but is more concerned about others and how they feel. Also, as with all unselfish people, she commits the act of leaving the cookie in a placable manner, not grudgingly or with an exasperated attitude, showing that she is willing to give up what she desires to everyone from her friend to her worst enemy, and she is doing it without complaining.
ReplyDeleteI do understand her value and Emily being unselfish. And Emily's unselfishness is necessary in our society today because all we care about is ourselves and we should but maybe we should think about other people sometimes. And what other people don't have and you do.
DeleteSimone Biles is a gymnast and 4 time Olympic gold medalist. One thing I admire about Simone Biles, is her ability to persevere through anything. When Simone was little, her and her siblings had a drug addict as a mother and was constantly moved around through the foster care system. She and her siblings persevered through this tough time. When Simone was 6, her grandparents adopted her and her sister. Simone was entered into gymnastics when she was 6 years old as well. Though she was young, if Simone was not able to persevere through this time, she would not have been able to go to Rio in 2016 and become the most decorated gymnast in the history of gymnastics.
ReplyDeleteSimone Biles sounds like a very strong person and is worthy of admiration. Someone who has gotten through so much and had such an amazing outcome. Most people can't do that because they don't have the courage to do so.
DeleteIf you have ever felt overwhelmed with all you have to complete, then you know how I have felt many times before. There had been so many days I desired to stop an activity but I didn’t, thanks to my mom. My mom is very altruistic. Being selfless is putting others needs before your own, and my mom does that all the time. She has plenty of work to complete, but she will always find time to help me. There has been a profusion of times she had stayed up late and woken up early just to help me complete all my activities. Not only does my mom help me, but she helps so many other people by being their doctor. No matter where my mom is she is always trying to help someone in one way or another.
ReplyDeleteYour mom seems very selfless. We need more people in the world like her, because she takes time out of her day to help others get through what they need to have done. Being selfless is a very good characteristic trait to have, and your mom shows it very well.
DeleteOne person who I admire is my dad. The reason I admire my dad is because he shows appreciation for everything. My dad is always there for me when I need him and he is very caring. When I am annoyed or sad he is always the one that helps me. When I get into fights with my mom he always tries to help me through it and makes sure that i'm okay. One big reason I admire him is because he always tells me that his kids come first before anything else. He shows that he cares for us. He never stops telling us that he loves us and I appreciate everything he does. This is why I admire my dad.
ReplyDeleteYour dad seems very admirable! I think the characteristics he shows are necessary to our society.A lot of people don't care about others and your dad obviously shows deep appreciation for you and your siblings. Sometimes people feel alone and need someone to talk to and your dad seems like he is a reliable and admirable person.
DeleteOne person in my life who I admire and look up to is my oldest sister. She’s really busy but she will always try to be there when I need her at least she tries to be. One example of this is when I had Homework due in a few days and I had to finish it so I ask for help because I really didn’t want to have to do it over the weekend because I had to do a pretty big project over the weekend that I wanted to get done but, eventually she ended up basically doing most of the project for me because she would always criticize about how some of the pictures that weren’t cut out perfectly she also helped me pick out the pictures and titles and helped me pick out facts for each of the things and that was really helpful but, it was a lot of help and I got a 98 on the project because I forgot to write my name. These are some of the many reasons I admire my older sister.
ReplyDeleteI think he look up to this person because they are always there for him.
DeleteI admire my dad. Okay. I said it. Even when I disagree with him (maybe especially when I disagree with him), I admire some of his qualities. Firstly, he is dedicated to what he believes in. So for example, he strongly believes that it’s very important to succeed in school and get good grades, no matter what people say to try to dissuade him. This is why I admire him especially when I disagree with him. Secondly, he is optimistic. Not only do I admire his optimism, I also admire the exact blend of optimism and pessimism/skepticism that he has. He is usually encouraging, for example when I have an extremely busy week coming up, but then when I have an idea that he thinks just really can’t happen, he isn’t shy about letting me know. He talks about, sometimes, the belief of lots of people that they can do it, that they have something special, and then they fail because they don’t actually have something special. There are some things about him that I don’t admire, such as his lack of sleep, but that is not the subject of this paragraph. So he is dedicated and optimistic and pessimistic, and I admire him for it.
ReplyDeleteI can see why you admire your father, people that keep in their beliefs, and are both encoraging but not blunt and say the harsh truth, are the people that we need in this world.
DeleteDo you have someone who has a will of iron, one who will never fold, not even in the face of armageddon? For me, that strong-willed individual is my brother, Sean. For the entirety of my life, he has pushed me to become a better person. A valid example of this would be a story I call the Spoon Wars. One night, I claimed to have completed my task of returning the clean silverware to their drawer, when my brother notified me that there was one spoon left. I then announced to him that I was done working, and that he could put the spoon away himself*. I was then met with a soaring spoon to the face, and a stern talking to. This began a back and forth war of wills in which I would put the spoon in anything of Sean’s, and then Sean storming into my room with spoon, demanding it be put away. In the end, Sean was victorious, and the spoon was put away. Even when confronted with my eternal defiance, Sean refused to concede. If we all possessed Sean’s will and determination we would find that there is nothing that cannot be done.
ReplyDeleteAiden, I think that you picekd a very valuable person tht you admire because you spend so much time with your brother. When he pushes you to be better, accept his advice rather than turning it down because he knows he probably did some stuff wrong and makes you learn from his mistakes
DeleteA person that I admire is Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran is a very humble person, that is never arrogant about his success as a singer/songwriter. This trait he has is very valuable, and I look up to this. For a interview Ed mentioned that god felt badly for him, so god gave him a voice. This was because he grew up having a lazy eye, and a stutter, that affected him in many ways. Such as isolation from participating in class. The embarrassment of not being able to articulate his answers well, and of course being picked on. The stutter ended up getting resolved when Ed’s father bought him the Eminem album, out of his love for the songs he memorised them. The fast tempo ended up curing his stutter. A conclusion that you can draw from this is no one is a perfect human. We all have our flaws and our strengths. Instead of dwelling on our flaws we should focus on our strengths that set us apart from others. These strengths do make us special, and we should never be arrogant about them, because arrogance can be your downfall.
ReplyDeleteI think Ed Sheeran is worthy of admiration because he had troubles accepting himself when he was younger but he went to music and it helped. Music helped him with his issues. He learned the Eminem album and it helped his stutter. He had flaws but focused on his strengths.
DeleteA person I look up to is Gary Vaynerchuck. He is a million dollar entrepreneur but doesn't let money get to him. Coming over from Poland as a child, he wasn't fluent in English. He had trouble fitting in with the crowd but he continued with his passion. As a child he was targeted and put down. He struggled in school but knew not to give up. He learned many lessons about perseverance and how to get bye im life. With the new technology and social media platforms, he is able to share this knowledge. He taught me the lesson on how to not think negatively. People will hate and judge you, but it's your thoughts that decide your actions
ReplyDeleteGary Vaynerchuck sounds like a leader. He is someone to look up to and we need people like him to start changing our world with a positive outlook. It seems like he is trying to make a difference.
DeleteOne person I look up to is my best friend Emily Clarke. I’ve known Emily since I was born and she has always been helpful and kind to me.Since Emily is a year older than me she loves to help me do my homework. I’ve have facetimed/texted her just for her to help me with homework. She always tells me right away she tells it to my in a totally different way then the teacher tells me and I understand so much better than I did before and I almost always get it right. Sometimes when I’m scared or nervous about doing something I talk to her and she always helps me calm down or helps me though it. Like when I was nervous about going into middle school she was already in middle school going into 7th grade and she said it was awesome, hard work and so much more homework but, so much fun. Then that made me not be as nervous. Emily is always there when I needed her even though she lives in a different state. It helps me get through everyday to know that I know I have an amazing friend in my life. That’s why I look up to Emily Clarke .
ReplyDeleteEmily Clarke seems like the type of person to always help someone out.
DeleteEmily seemed like a incredibly considerate person. She seems as if she will always help you in your time of need. You mentioned that when your nervous or upset that Emily comes in to help
DeleteThere are times where we have felt ridiculed because of something we have given our hardest work and pure dedication to. Walt Disney is an influential model that taught other people and I the importance of passion and devotion to the things we love the most. Before his legendary fame, he was fired from a Missouri newspaper company for “lacking imagination”. His business that focused on animation had eventually ended in bankruptcy, which led to the mockery from other people for his “childish” ideas. Eventually, because of his awareness to his only passion, he proved to defy all these people by working harder, longer and smarter. Because of his strong belief to himself, his creations with other partners like Ub Iwerks are now a big part of all the children growing up until today.
ReplyDelete
DeleteAyesha, The person you chose to admire was a great choice. Walt Disney embraced his imagination and "childish" ideas and used them to prove people wrong that doubted him. I like how you gave lots of background information to give detail. Great job!
One person I look up to is Xi Jinping. He grew up during a period of reform in China in the Shaanxi province. Although his father was a government official, he was purged from a life of luxury early on once his father fell out of favor. For most of his young life, he worked by the countryside, feeding pigs and doing manual labor. However, he dreamed of pursuing a political career. After multiple tries, he finally joined the CCP in 1974. During his political career, he gained many leadership positions in many provinces. His political career got boosted when he became the party secretary for Shanghai in 2007, where he helped the city regain its financial image. Gradually working his way up, he managed to get elected president of China in 2013. Xi Jinping went from farm labor to becoming one of the most powerful people in the world. His story shows that it doesn’t matter where you start; your success is determined by your devotion to your aspirations. Always persevere to achieve your goals.
ReplyDeleteGeorge, I think this is a great person to admire because he was a very hard worker and just because his dad was a government official doesn't mean he doesn't have to work. He was smart that he chose to work because when he got older he had skills that not every has. That is why he was elected, Because he never stopped working, and we need more people like that today.
DeleteA person that I really admire is my older sister. Although we sometimes fight(like many siblings), I can always count on her to be there for me. Before 8th grade began, I was anxious for the upcoming classes, specifically biology. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, and was overwhelmed with the idea that there would be too much work. Luckily, my sister stepped in and explained everything, answering every question I had. Because of her clarifications, I went into my classes feeling less stressed. My sister has always inspired me to help others, and I’m thankful that I’m able to depend and look up to her.
ReplyDeleteEllen, I think your older sister is worthy of admiration because she sounds really caring and helpful! Your sister seems like a person who will always help you no matter what.

DeleteRick Riordan is an amazing and well known author. But the origins of his fame didn't come from simply wanting to get money or wealth. All he wanted was to encourage his dyslexic son and reluctant readers all over the world to read! One of the values that Rick Riordan has is charity, which is like kindness to others. When his son was younger, he loved greek mythology, but was frustrated by not being able to read them easily. So Rick Riordan created the remarkable and humorous percy jackson's to help people like his son, read. His main character, Percy Jackson, suffers from ADHD and dyslexia too. He created a character that was flawed and not perfect , so many people can relate and learn from him. He was just an ordinary person who used his talents to do what he could help others. Rick riordan wanted to help people like his son and many others, to he used what he had to inspire them. Sometimes when there is a problem, I just brush it off and think things like “there's nothing I can do to help” But Rick Riordan taught me to think of others and use any talent I have to help them, and many others.
ReplyDeleteJessica, you made Rick Riordan seem like a great person who is always trying to make people feel better. He is very worthy to look up to because he helps people accept themselves and not feel bad about being imperfect
