In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly. In one paragraph:
- describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
- offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
- at the end, paste the url of a website from which you did some reading about the dangers of using the technology.
Facebook is a type of technology which people use way too fast. Some ways facebook is used too fast is the posts. People can put a picture on the internet which they actually didn mean to. They won realize it until much later. Also people can get cyber bullied and can say mean things on the internet. One way to prevent from all of this from happening is to think twice before posting anything.
ReplyDeletehttps://gizmodo.com/5530178/top-ten-reasons-you-should-quit-facebook
I agree that there is a lot of cyber bulling on the internet and they people do need to think twice about what they post because they might post something that is really bad. People should not take things out on other people on social media.
DeleteTrue. Lots of people get cyber bullied online because people post things and don't think about it first,or what could happen if they post it. People should think more than once before they post something.
DeleteI think encouraging Facebook users to put thought into their posts is a fantastic solution; training users of social media like Facebook to think before they post will eliminate thoughtless posts that hurt other people and damage the poster’s reputation. Facebook holds great opportunity for people who utilize it responsibly; thoughtful posts will reflect positively on the person posting, and it can give colleges and employers a sense of the poster’s self-control and good language skills, whereas an impulsive post will send a bad message to employers and colleges. If people put thought into their posts, they are more likely to engage in meaningful, constructive conversations rather than conversations that reflect negatively on them and have a harmful effect on others (which could become cyberbullying). People will be less likely to carelessly post images and words if they are taught that what they post has a lasting impact on both themselves and others. Other solutions are: Making an age restriction for Facebook so that the users are older and more likely to think things through, and teaching kids how to identify and report cyberbullying.
DeleteI think making sure before you post is a good solution it will make the person who is posting the photo or commenting think twice before they post something bad or something they will regret posting that many people will see and will probably end up in cyberbullying.
DeleteEvery time a new Iphone is invented more updates are made and do any of these creators of the Iphone think about the consequences of these "amazing and helpful pieces of technology." I know there are consequences like computer vision syndrome. By looking at your phone, texts, and tweets too much you can develope constant dizzy or blurry vision for the rest of your life. Do you really not want to be able to complete normal life activities and tasks because you looked at your phone to much? This is very important for teens to know because many are obsessed with their phones. This can be fixed if everyone especially teens try to limit their screen time less and less until it is down to about 1 hour every day.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/wellness/a24269/smartphone-syndromes/
I liked your idea of only having about one hour of screen time a day, I think we need to limit screen time but In my opinion one hour is a little short. I think you should be aloud to use your Iphone for about two hours a day. I think you should also not be charged time if there is a family emergency you have to take care of.
DeleteI liked your ideas and enjoyed your suggestions. I think that your solutions might work because it can control teens actions relating to screen time, but taking over teens actions will be a little hard. Teens are already in these everyday habits of using their phones for hours. I think that if teens were given maybe two hours a day, this solution would be more efficient.
DeleteI think that the solution of limiting screen time will work poorly in preventing computer vision syndrome. The "two hours a day" rule has been cited and suggested again and again, yet myopia is still on the rise. My suggestion is to add software to phones that makes screens more dynamic, so the eye is constantly exercised. This can prevent eye problems resulting from screen use.
DeleteWe use many different technologies in our modern world, but there is one that we rely on above all else, our phones. Or more specifically computers. Computer A.I. continues to get smarter, and that may mean less hard work and more relaxing for us, but it could also put massive amounts of people into poverty.
ReplyDeleteTechnology can take our jobs, as they are more efficient and cheaper at getting work done. In the past few decades, jobs that use to be done by humans are done by robots. One example is the assembly of products, which is almost automated to perfection. Taxi and Uber drivers are at risk of losing their jobs to self driving cars! We have to be careful about our advancements in technology. When we do start to get replaced by robots, there isn't much we can do.
There are a couple of precautions that we can take. One way is limiting the amount of automations that can be used in one workplace. Another more likely solution is to choose a career path that can't be completely overrun by bots. It's harder for jobs that require creativity to become replaced by robots. Please be careful of what you want to do when you grow up, because a robot might be able to do it better.
Link to site (forgot to add earlier sorry)-http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20150805-will-machines-eventually-take-on-every-job
DeleteI think the solution of limiting how many robots that can be used in a job is a good and efficient idea. This was robots can get more difficult tasks done to get the job done quicker, but humans can also work to make money. I also agree with the solution of being smart while picking a career path. I think those solutions will definitely work because if you are being smart with the concept of robots , they will not overtake our jobs.
DeleteI believe that your solution will work. If we limit automation in jobs, we can easily prevent people from losing jobs. However, this would put off a better potential future. In under a century, all jobs could be automated. By your method, humans will keep jobs, but this prevents a more ideal solution. If we have AI that can take over all human jobs (because even creative jobs will be eventually taken over), then we could rework our entire world economy. The only things that would be required is fixing robots, and other robots could do that anyway. So all things could be made essentially free. People could devote their lives to helping and joy, and it could be a utopian future.
DeleteI think the solution of putting a limit on the amount of robots doing certain jobs will help. If there is a limit to the amount, many people won't lose their jobs. Another solution I suggest is for people to choose a job which requires the use of emotions and other feelings. For example a psychologist. Because they have to deal with personal problems and emotions, robots are not able to take over their jobs.
DeleteThank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. Maggie; I'm glad you agreed with my solution, but I would like to know some of your own ideas.
DeleteNoah, I think that the solution you suggested is a great one. It takes into account how the evolution of AI technology can help us improve our lives. I really hope that the utopian future that you speak of can be realised, and that the future doesn't hold anything Terminator-esque. Finally, I also think that your solution is a good one too Dilni. If we can let machines do work that doesn't require human emotion then people can focus on work that does require it.
ReplyDeleteCell phones today are used everyday by a lot of people and people can get cancer and have health problems from being on their phone a lot of the time. People can get in an accident while they are on their phone texting or talking to someone. The number of cell phone calls per day, the length of each call, and the amount of time people use cell phones have increased,so I would consider to people to not be using your phone everyday. Childrens are on their phones more than adults are.Children's nervous system is still developing and therefore
We can try to use a cell phone carefully by not talking/texting on the phone while driving, and try to stop using cell phones everyday. And try to get outside without bringing a cell phone outside with you. People can at least try to do some outdoor actives instead of using their phone.
Good point Suki, our social bond is becoming more intertwined with our devices. We should take time off of these, in order to stop accidents happening more frequently. And limiting our use is the intelligent thing to do. We can occupy ourselves with something more productive.
DeleteThese were great points, Suki! I think that encouraging actions such as not texting and driving and spending more time outside are great ways to stop using your phone. Another way to help prevent people from having too much screen time is to educate kids on the serious effects and consequences, and to give a reasonable amount of time you should be spending on a device each day.
DeleteThese are really good points. I think the suggested solutions would help, but we would really have to forget about our phones for a little while and go get some fresh air. Another solution could be to turn off our phones and do other more important things rather than wasting valuable time on our phones.
DeleteMariana I really like what you said about having another solution and I totally agree with you because if the mor people who turn off their phones and do important things like their homework or be with their family and do things with their family instead of being on their phone all day and all night.
DeleteIn, “ Every hour of T.V watching shortens life by 22 minutes,” Martin said. Anyone who spends six hours a day in front of the box is at risk dying five years sooner than those who enjoy more activities. Martin is saying that if you watch T.V. all day every hour, then your brain will rot and you will be at risk for more health problems. This can also apply to too much phone or computer usage. He wanted readers to learn the dangers of television. Some possible solutions to this problem are by going outside to play more often, reading a book, going different places. Moving around and exercise is better than always sitting.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/8702101/Every-hour-of-TV-watching-shortens-life-by-22-minutes.html
I like your idea about going outside. I think kids should go outside and play with friends like you suggested. I think a solution would be to only allow kids under ten to only be aloud two hours of T.V per day. Kids should not be charges for watching the news because the news should be educating them.
DeleteI think your solution will work because if we go outside we will be distracted from the things that could hurt us in the future. Another way is you could limit your time like only 2 hours on my phone a day if you are determined.
DeleteMaybe, people should have time limits to their phone or tv time, and spend the rest of their days doing physical and active things.

ReplyDeleteUsing the internet without being careful about where and when your personal information is used can be dangerous, sometimes people get their personal information hacked. People have their social security number being hacked and their money stolen by people that don't even break into their house. With the online world getting ever so bigger and the amount of malware increasing people seem to fall in to malware traps. People often don’t realize that personal information is exposed for hackers and people who will take there money at will. There are several ways to combat it like setting up firewalls, have fool-proof tech, and also with making sure you have control of the privacy settings of your accounts and social media.
https://www.inhomesafetyguide.org/dangers-wireless-home-security-systems/
The solutions that you've mentioned definitely seem like good ways to prevent stolen information, and could be effective in being used as protection against hackers and other people. Another possible solution could be to simply be more careful and put thought into where you're putting your information and who can see it. We should be aware of these possible dangers, and that is a huge step in preventing them.
DeleteYeah... Preventing hackers from getting private info is pretty hard but those things will help. Something I suggest is if you are on a gaming website or watching youtube, don't sign up to save your data or to subscribe to people.
DeleteI like your solutions like setting up firewalls but what if you are not a tech genius and really don't know how to do some of the things you suggested. For my solution I would just tell people to be more careful with their personal information. Hackers are very smart these days and have very good technology. People don't always make sure that they are protecting their personal information and need to be more careful of who can see their personnel information and were you put it.
DeleteA form of technology that we use today is artificial intelligence (AI). Even though it likely won't wake up and kill us all, AI could wipe out millions of jobs. For clarity, AI is the collection of data for a specific area to make a decision to fit an ultimate goal. Once trained, AI robots would be much better and more efficient at completing a task. This would lead to millions of job losses. No jobs are invulnerable, even the high-paying ones. Some suggestions on how to use AI more carefully is to limit where it can be found in a home or workplace. A different (and more expensive) option is to reeducate yourself to a job that would likely survive the mass job losses caused by AI. Whatever the cause, should AI spread into the workforce, millions of jobs would be eliminated. The ones that prevent or prepare will survive, and everyone else would have to compete for the only remaining jobs left.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/24/opinion/sunday/artificial-intelligence-economic-inequality.html
DeleteI love your idea. Another solution might be to not ever use AIs again.
DeleteThis is a good idea. another solution could be to limit the jobs AI can do.
DeleteInteresting ideas! To improve on my potential solution, I could restrict AI development for military applications. Elizabeth, I am concerned that your stance on restriction will not be enforceable as governments could keep research secret. Katie, I think that although your idea is broad, it may work. Nonetheless, great ideas!
DeleteTechnology from today can be considered dangerous, one example is cars because when you go into a car you don't think anything bad is going to happen, but the one second you look at your phone you go into a curb or even worst hit a person. When people are just driving down the street they tend to not buckle up but studies show that most accidents happen at low speeds near home. One way that we proved this is that seat belts have saved more than 75,000 lives between 2004 and 2008.
ReplyDeletewww. caranddriver.com/flipbook/these-are-the-most-dangerous-things-drivers-do
The solutions you provided in the paragraph would work but it doesn't go into full depth on the topic. A suggestion for your topic would be to use something like a bluetooth computer that links with your vehicle, that tells your messages answers phone calls things like that. Another option is to put it bluntly is you could not use your phone while driving.
DeleteTrue. Seat belts can save lives. Something that can prevent crashes is to not look at your phone and if your phone has a hands off mode that makes your phone speak messages and reply with voice that doesn't require to look away from the road, use it to yours and other people's advantages.
DeleteJustin, I agree Seat belts can save lives and they have. I believe that it will work, but some people have phones that will automatically know when they're driving causing the phone to be silent and not distracting the driver.
DeleteI think that social media is a dangerous technology because it makes kids and teens believe that the amount of followers/subscribers and the amount of likes you get defines who you are as a person. One of the main reasons that they do this is because they check the social media apps regularly each day. When they check to see who followed/unfollowed them or liked their photos/videos, it can cause a lot stress on them. We can use social media more carefully by teaching kids about it in a class and by helping kids and teens understand the importance of being careful on the sites.
ReplyDeletehttps://childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/
DeleteYou can use social media more carefully but it will still be an impact on our lives. We could become more aware of our actions and learn about them more, but what if we start talking about it more on the news. Maybe more people will start to listen.
DeleteCadence, I think you went really far into detail, that you described it perfectly. I had a friend a while ago who was obsessed with getting 30+ likes on a post or he gets sad, and he became stressed when people started not liking his posts. When you mentioned that Social Media isn't always a safe place, well you didn't just do that, you supported it with evidence, it got me thinking. But in the long run, I'd say you did a really good job with this!
DeleteYeah. Keeping an eye on stuff like that can be stressful. I know because I have a youtube channel. Another solution is to maybe be a viewer instead of being a youtuber or a twitcher.
DeleteMichaela~ I agree that it would make more of an impact on young people's lives if they talked about the dangers of social media on the news. Especially because of how many kids and teens use social media. That means that the parents of those kids could also see and understand the problems and risks.
DeleteSpencer~ Thank you for sharing the story about your friend. I think that it shows how people stress about how many people like a photo instead of enjoying the people around you in real life.
Dogeface105~ I think that you have a really good point! Being a starting Youtuber is probably very difficult and uninspiring because no one knows you yet. however, I think that if you want to become a Youtuber or a online content creator; you should follow your dreams.
Whenever you’re out in public, you need to connect to to wifi so you don’t waste your data, right? So when your mom pulls into the gas station, your finger quickly taps settings and you join that free network that popped up. You don’t care where you’re getting your wifi from. All you care about is the fact that you can now open up your snapchats quicker. But what if I told you that when you join unknown wifi hotspots that are public you are leaking information about yourself to the public. The information that is leaking is coming from your phone. Public hotspots are insecure, and you can’t trust them. They weren’t built with security that we need in the 21st Century. Hackers can go into your device and read anything that is associated with the wifi (emails, texting etc.) It’s as if you were inscribing your information into the hacker's device when you join an unknown wifi server. However, I think there is a way that we can fix this. You have two options. 1, you can just wait until you get home and use your own wifi! If the email you're making isn’t very important then I’d do that. On your phone, go to settings and unclick the wifi button. That way, your phone doesn’t automatically join any networks. Plus, it saves your battery. Your welcome! If that email can’t wait, then you can set up your own personal wifi hotspot on your phone. You can also make your own password so only you can use it. (You have to watch out for those cheap neighbors!) If you are planning on doing this, you should probably set it up ahead of time so when you need to send that email all you have to do is tap away and hit send! So next time it asks for your permission to join a wifi server, think. Can it wait? Or will hacker see me as bait.
ReplyDeletehttps://safeandsavvy.f-secure.com/2014/09/29/danger-of-public-wifi/
The topic that you have stated is unusual and interesting. Not a lot of people are aware of it and it is a huge problem. I do have a few suggestions on the topic. One could be making the public more aware and spreading the risk of it. Another suggestion would be that schools could make a class about technology and this could be a subject that they cover.
DeleteThe topic you wrote about was very interesting to me, and I didn't know that your information could leak by connecting to unsecured WiFi. So you really helped me understand this, and you explained it really well, I will now wait until I go home to connect to Wifi.
DeleteI think your idea is really good. I think it will work. I think it will work, because if you use a hotspot you will not be leaking any information about yourself. I like how you talked about the dangers so well. I will now make a hotspot so if I have anything important I can get to it as fast as possible.
DeleteSocial media is one form of modern technology that we use without considering its dangers. We don’t consider the dangers with social media because people just post things about themselves that everybody can see. Dangers could be posting something that you wouldn’t want your future boss to be seeing so it could stop you from getting a job in the future. One solution could be to have everything private and only let people you know and trust to see what you post. Also don’t post things such as where you live or where you got to school so if someone didn't like something about you that they wanted to be rude about they couldn’t do anything to you. This is how we are developing modern technologies such as social media too quickly that it ends up serving as a danger.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.allprodad.com/5-dangers-of-social-media-for-teens/
I think your solution is good, and I liked the part where you said " Dangers could be posting something that you wouldn't want your future boss to be seeing so it stop you from getting a job in the future". I liked how you talked about not just the dangers that could happen now, but what could happen in your future. Another solution could be think before you press send.
DeleteI think your solutions for the dangers with social media will work. About how "One solution could be to have everthing private and only let the people you know and trust to see what you post." Is a really great solution to help with the dangers of social media so they can be more careful on how there are on social media and don't get in trouble. A possible solution is you can be very cafeful on social media and make sure there are no strangers stalking you or friending you.
DeleteMelanie, I agree with your new solution to think before you send because instead of just sending is a really good idea because some people will just get into the moment and start sending things that they might later regret. I think this would work if people were to just take a step back and think even for just a split second before they send anything to anyone. Also to go along with this someone might end up saying something over text that they meant to go one way but the person receiving it interpretes it in a different way or tone.
DeleteArtificial intelligence is the technology of the future. Artificial intelligence could save lives, make jobs easier, and make life easier. Artificial intelligence could also take lives, take jobs, and make life a living heck.
ReplyDeleteThe definition of artificial intelligence is when a computer system performs a tasks that normally requires human intelligence. Basical it is a computer system that knows every single thing that has ever been published online, has speech recognition, decision making ability, and translation between languages. So the computer system can do everything we can do but a billion times faster and trillion times more.
Artificial intelligence can now exactly where someone is, and artificial intelligence can calculate where the person is going through the person’s patterns. That power could lead to terror and absolute control.
A couple ways we could not use artificial intelligence as much is to stop asking Siri questions and just look the question up in a book or ask a teacher. Another way we could stop using artificial intelligence is to stop telling Alexa to play music and play music yourself.
Artificial intelligence can do many phenomenal things for the human race. It can also do horrible things to the human race. In one way artificial intelligence is a way to help civilization, but artificial intelligence can be a ticking time bomb.
Artificial intelligence can n

I think some of the solutions you thought of are a bit unrealistic. Only if people start depending less and less on technology, which seems very unlikely, will your solutions work. As technology evolves, humans will depend on it more. It's not like if a new piece of technology came out, people wouldn't use it. I think a solution could be, start teaching from a young age not to depend on technology. It is a bit like your solution, but seems more effective since the person would never have depended too much on technology like the more grown up people today do.
DeleteKnow that I look at my solutions I agree that they are unrealistic. Humans are also going to need some type of help from tecknology. I really like you solution though. I think it will work because if the young never depend on technology, they won't need it as much. Thank you for your Phenomenal new solution.
DeleteToday people use social media without considering the dangers. For example meeting strangers, they may say they are a 14-year-old girl but then when you meet them they are actually a 41-year-old man. Secondly sharing information, kids will often tell people what school they go to, their phone numbers and where they live. Thirdly photos, photos can lead to strangers finding you. For example if you take a photo of the Statue of Liberty and you post it on Instagram, Snapchat and/or Twitter, strangers around you can find you. Ways we can social media more carefully are to know what you are posting about yourself, avoid giving anyone information like your email, phone number etc. Mostly make sure you know who you follow as a friend. And these are the dangers of social media and how you can avoid it
ReplyDeletehttps://www.care.com/c/stories/4275/5-dangers-of-social-media-to-discuss-with-you/
I think this is very true, and that people should be way more careful when they are using the internet. They don't think of the consequences when the post pictures, or tweet, or talk to someone they don't know online. I think you did well with explaining in and I don't have anything to add except when you post things, there is also a location button, that will post a picture with your exact location which can also lead to bad dangers.
DeleteI agree with you. I see people on social media posting things that could be harmful to them all the time. Another solution, for all people with snapchat could be to keep your location turned off. If someone harmful adds you on snapchat they can see your location
DeleteI think your right. People need to be more aware of what they are doing online and what information they are giving out. Some people get caught up in talking with someone they don't know online, but they think they know them.
DeleteNew technology is invented to help people. With all of this help, there could be serious problems. One of the biggest problems is social problems. People (typically teens) are spending more and more time on their phones. This results in less face to face communication. Social interaction is needed for our mental health, so if we keep misusing technology, human interaction will keep deteriorating until it dies. A second danger is loss of privacy. Hackers can get their hands on just about anything digital. Most people do not want all of their private texts and conversations all over the internet, so this is obviously bad. Another danger is using new technology for building new weapons. We are taking advantage of all this technology that we are actually using it to hurt people! Also, staring at screens is bad for vision. Maybe less kids would need glasses if they didn’t spend so much time staring at screens and being on phones for long periods of time. The solution to this is to cut down the use of unneeded technology. By doing this, kids might do better in school because of less distractions. Also, less cyberbullying would occur. Technology is great, but are we taking it for granted? Are we taking advantage of it? Yes. It’s not too late to do something about it. Perhaps we are using technology the wrong way. Perhaps we don’t understand the purpose of technology. Perhaps we are eating technology too fast.

-Michaela DeFrancisco
While I do agree this is a major issue today, how do you propose we limit the use of unneeded technology? It is easier said than done. I believe that digital cerfews should be put into place that prevent people from using their phones or substitutes too much.
DeleteI think that this will work because people would be less distracted and focus on school work more instead of procrastinating and waiting until last minute to do work. One other solution would be to limit the time we spend on phones at home whether if it's our decision or someone else's.
DeleteI agree with both of you. These solutions are easier said than done. Adain, I think we should limit the use of unneeded technology by decreasing the battery charge of recreational technology. For example, a kid's cell phone. Other much needed technology for engineering or other important things would remain the same. I also think your solution is a very good idea because kids would get more sleep. Kurt, I think your solution is a good idea, but how would people get kids off their phones? Like Aiden said,it's easier said than done.
DeleteThere are many technologies from today that we use without considering the dangers, and one of the most used technologies is social media. What many people don't realize about social media is that it really does affect our day to day lives.
ReplyDeleteOne of the dangers of social media is that it exacerbates the need for validation from others. Whether it's likes, followers, retweets or other, it takes away our ability to validate ourselves. Although this danger really doesn't seem that dangerous, nothing like nuclear bombs or AI, changing our view on validation makes us attempt to define who we are through our social media accounts, and we don't show who we really are in order to protect other's views of us.
Another one of the dangers of social media is that social media tends to isolate people from the real world. With social media, we feel that our relationships online are enough, and that we can isolate ourselves. This prevents us from really forming deeper relationships with people face to face.
Even though social media is dangerous, it is still immensely important for communication. I believe the solution to preventing the dangers of social media is not by eliminating social media entirely, but by limiting it and educating ourselves about social media.
Although social media might not be seen as the most urgent or important danger, it's certainly one that affects our lives in a pretty important way.
https://relevantmagazine.com/culture/tech/8-dangers-social-media-were-not-willing-admit
DeleteI agree with everything you stated. I believe the solution you suggested will help with the social media issue because not only is it easy, but if we learn the danger of it, we may realize that we need to make a change. Although this is a good solution, I'm sure there is other options. Such as limiting our time on social media. As you mentioned, social media isolates people from the real world, so if we limit our time on it, we would be more social, not online. Great job!
DeleteThis is a very well said and important statement that not a lot of people really understand. Technology may be fun and useful, but not if we feel the need to seek acceptance from the people in it. I think another solution to this problem is that we should turn the mindset of social media towards body, gender and diversity positivity. Overall, very well written to such important topic.
DeleteHannah, if you read what I said, I stated that social media is very important, and that we should continue to use it in a limited fashion. I very much agree we should be more social offline, building real relationships with friends and family.
DeleteToday we use social media like food. We can't live without it. While people previously used watering holes, taverns, churches, and more to gather now we use facebook, snapchat, instagram, and more. These sites are so addictive since you can log on literally anywhere. If you want to tell your friend about your day you can do it while on the bus, in school, in a car, and much more. If you want to tell your sister to cook you eggs you can do that anywhere too. But sadly another thing you can do is tell someone all the worst and meanest things ever. Anywhere. That's not all! Also kids can share their personal info with anyone! Accidentally or not this can be very dangerous. Plus kids can be addicted to these devices to the point where their lives literally depend on how many "likes" they get. This is not good! Professor James Robert, says that “people can be addicted to behaviors and that habitual cellphone users can begin to depend on their phone in ways that seem quite similar to how people respond to drugs”. Think, if your phone dies how do you feel? Sad, depressed, even angry? That is EXACTLY how it feels to a tobacco addict when they run out of cigarettes. Plus isn’t the purpose of having a phone to make yourself happy? That’s what drugs are for too! And it takes more and more useage to get the original happiness says James Robert. This is not good and phones are definitely some “knowledge” that we ate too fast. We should put more security features on our phones so that bullys and worse stay off.
ReplyDeletehttps://academicminute.org/2016/09/james-roberts-baylor-university-is-cell-phone-addiction-real/
I don't think putting security features on the phones themselves would work, as this just seems to be a band aid solution. I believe a real root solution would be to have the social media corporations institute restrictions and safety measures, as they're the ones providing the source. They can directly limit dangerous activity much better than us putting more security features on our phones.
DeleteThanks Ian! After reading your response I've come to agree with you. The companies who make the apps can (and should) exercise their power to make phones safer. As well as that I propose apps take down their addictive software features. Those being the "just one more click" affect. Legislature may be able to help with both of these goals.
DeleteYou truly can't stop tumors or cancer from happening, but researchers believe cell phones can risk the chances of getting tumors or cancers. Cell phones give off a form of energy known as radiofrequency waves. Radiofrequency waves aren't necessarily proven to make the risk of tumors and cancer higher. There isn't enough evidence, and more research is needed to look at possible long-term effects. One way to prevent anything health related to radiation caused by cellphones, is to not use them extremely often and use them wisely. We should use more caution, as more complex phones are introduced.

Who are you?
DeleteI do think the idea you have suggested is a solid idea. However the probability of this being solved is low. I only think this because there isn't enough evidence to support your claim of phones causing cancer. A solution that I think can help is to have the phone makers realize the threat they are creating, instead of relying on humans to use it properly.
DeleteMr. Unknown, I think your suggestion is correct because radiation can affect us in certain ways that we can't possibly imagine. Another suggestion I would make is to limit the time on electronics or not use them for a certain time.

ReplyDeleteMany technology is in our grasp today in age. The one we mostly rely on is our cell phones. The cell phone is a device that a person can send text,or call on. We could use our cell phones much better by knowing how to use it, and then applying that knowledge into reality.
Another thing for danger is on the health side of the phone. Phones give off radiation called RF energy. The RF energy can cause brain cell loss which leads to tumors. One way to solve this is by using a headset or speakerphone when talking. Another is to make sure it’s not in your pocket for long periods of time.

Aiden, I think that your suggestions about being aware about our usage of technology and learning from it is very important because netizens today are abusing the freedom in technology. One other solution to this problem is that we should try to distract ourselves with other activities that does not involve gadgets. We can play sports, read books or help the community. This way, we can have a healthier life and control ourselves from the dangers of technology.
DeleteI definitely think that your solution would work; distracting yourself with other activities like sports or community work. I think this could work because when you're occupying your brain with another activity you like; you won't think about your phone.

ReplyDeleteDriverless cars are a technology that people are trying to develop too fast without thinking enough about the dangers of it. One danger is that they can not communicate with humans as well as would be needed. Imagine someone trying to interact with a driverless car but is unable. This would result in confusion and could lead to more accidents and congestion on the roads than it would solve. A way to prevent driverless cars from causing more accidents and congestion than they solve is to make sure that they can respond to humans as well as a human can. This might include driverless cars having human pilots until sufficient technology is developed.

I don't understand your solution my solution tho is just get rid of them as a whole. Why would you get a car that can drive you when this another things to do this that are safer like uber.I think we should get rid of self driveing cars
DeleteYeah. There should be a way where you can push a button for manual and auto driving. Manual mode would unlock the usage of the wheel and auto would lock the wheel. The point is that if the car can spot areas like intersections or find the speed limit, it would be ok but manual driving would be safer.
DeleteI think that the solution provided would take a more complex approach and it would take specifics to really solve the solution. Another solution to this problem is to provide areas or routes that are only for driverless cars to avoid too much accidents.
DeleteSocial media is a dangerous threat to children and teens! The main reason why is because there are Ipredators out there who want to kidnap, rape, and kill children. Ipredators can easily pretend to be someone else on the internet by having fake profile pictures and talking in the "teen language". Ipredators mainly go on social media to find teens.
ReplyDeleteYou don't really state a solution to your problem. The problem you give off is quite clear, people are faking their identity to lure children. The solution to this is children need to be properly taught on how to protect themselves on the internet.
DeleteYeah, there needs to be a solution to this problem. My solution is to use social media correctly or don't use it at all.
DeleteI completely agree with both of you Sam Shah and Dogeface105. I am sorry that I forgot to include a solution. My solution was the same as you, Sam Shah. To teach children how to properly use technology and the internet, instead of just letting anyone freely user the internet
DeleteTechnology is everywhere. If not used right it can be unsafe, dangerous , and unreliable.
ReplyDeleteIn the isolated area in the south of the of the Hudson Bay. People who lived there are called the Oji-Cree. For a majority of the 20th century they lived a fairly simple life. Killed for food, stayed in tents for summer, cabins in winters, and used canoes and snowshoes for transportation.
A doctor who worked with the Oji Cree saw that they showed no signs of mental breakdowns or substance abuse.the doctor said "the people lived a rugged, rigorous life with plenty of exercise." Even foreigners who knew them thought they were incredibly strong. But when advance technology came years later there were major changes. Living life was really easy because of the technology. They had a place to store their food, sweets, & alcohol so it wouldn't rot, television, and had outboard engines and snow mobiles for transportation. Thanks to this there has been a massive increase in morbid obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Even social problems such as idleness, alcoholism, drug addition, and suicide.
You know that before all this technology one Oji-Cree daily routine had workouts that was as rigorous as a professional athlete. This case was shows that such advance technology had made this much of a difference in ones life.

DeleteRachel,
DeleteYour thesis that a subsistence based lifestyle has many mental and physical life benefits makes sense. So much of modern technology helps save us time and labor. Where you show what the problem is, you don't show a specific solution to this issue. I think one may be to incentivize a healthy lifestyle and educate the people on the benefits of the lifestyle.
Rachel, this piece about the Oji-Cree is very interesting, especially that there are still people who live the opposite lives daily. However, if I may suggest a solution to this problem, I would encourage myself and other people through the internet or other resources to practice some routines that the Oji-Cree follow. Once they are known around, they might change their minds and think that their old way of life is the life that netizens now should consider.
DeleteAyesha and Maeve, I like your suggestions and I admit that there isn't a solution straight forward...I was not knowledgeable back then and probably thought my answer was good enough for the prompt. I apologize for my inconvenience. Your solutions are exactly what I implied but didn't state. Thank you taking your time and for reliping to my piece.
DeleteTechnology today is said to be an improvement, but really it has a lot of flaws as well. The radiation from phones and laptops can cause brain and neck cancer. We can solve this problem before it’s too late. One way we can limit the amount of radiation we are exposed to is simple, to not use your phone that much. One way we can do this is by lowering the amount of charge on phones and laptops so people won’t use them so often. Using social media less and making less can also help people use phones less.
ReplyDeletehttps://blog.oup.com/2017/02/how-dangerous-is-technology/
I don't think this solution would work that well. As time moves on people with continue to use technology more. Also it wouldn't make sense for companies like apple or samsung to lower the battery. That could lead to people complaining and them just losing money in general.
DeleteI don't think there is a good solution to this problem. As time goes on the need for technology will grow, so there is no stopping it.
DeleteYa can't stop improvement of technology but you can (If you have the right internet service) set a specific time when the internet is blocked from a certain system from a specific time.
DeleteI like your idea Dogface105,
DeleteSetting a specific time when the internet is blocked from a certain system is a great way to make sure people used technology like(like phones and laptops)less.
Dear MithchellMac85,
DeleteYou make a good point about my solutions, but I think that if the charge on the phones and laptops are less. Then people will be exposed to radiation less. However you make a great point.
Television is watched everyday in many households across the country. It has been one of the most used media sources for years, but many people don't realize how dangerous it can be. If a child is watching TV too early, it can keep them from talking for a long time. TV also exposes kids to violence, which can make them more aggressive in their daily lives. Television can keep people in isolation and make them antisocial, and can also keep people from getting enough sleep and exercise. Moving the TV out of your bedroom can keep you from losing sleep, and limiting the time you watch television opens up time for you to get active or go out with family and friends. Kids should be limited form screen time. All in all, everyone could be more careful about how much television they watch.

Nellie, I agree with the solution provided and I think that it will be an effective way to avoid television. Another solution that I think would work is to get involved and distracted from the TV. I think that it would also be a fun experience because it can let us engage in more activities like sports, clubs and community service. But overall, I think that your suggestions about controlling the exposure to tv is very effective.
DeleteIt can affect us by preventing sleep and making people antisocial. That's true. Another solution is to set a timer on the tv (If it's advanced enough) to shut down after a while so they would do something other than watch tv.
DeleteNice job! I noticed that many of your solutions need free will to stop from television watching, but sometimes it doesn't always work that way. However you provided a lot of information, that might encourage people to stop watching television, so perhaps awareness is a good solution. Another maybe stronger solution, is programs on the television, that maybe warn viewers when they have been watching for a while. Great Job Nellie!
