In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.”  As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers  to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly.   In one paragraph:

  • describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
  • offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
  • at the end, paste the url of a website from which you  did some reading about the dangers of using the technology.

  1. "Perhaps in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast". In our lives, we use technology for a lot. For texting, calling, social media, and so much more. We never think of how we are using these dangerously. We spend most of our time laying down, on our phones, or watching Tv. This is leading into obesity and diabetes. When we overuse technology it could also lead into things like ADHD, coordination disorder, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. We could fix this by limiting the usage of our phones. Joining a sport or a club that gets you out of the house and doing something other than laying around. We can do much more than just going on our phones all the time. 1. Jaden, this paragraph is very well written, and it makes me realize how much technology can be dangerous. I completely agree with your take on this. Another danger with electronics is when people use them before bed. The blue light in electronics makes it hard for people to sleep. This affects a person's performance the next day. A solution to this could be to keep electronics away from your bed or out of your room. This will make sure a person has a good night sleep.

    2. Awesome job Jaden! Your right, our technology devices do pay a toll on our life. A way we could solve this is to put to limits on phones or computers so we don't spend more than the recommended dose of tech devices. This could help people be more active, or more social!

    3. Nice job Jaden! Another problem with technology is cyberbullying. Because of the technology that we have today we might also have social media. Social media is a great way to talk to your friends and share photos from your life. But there is also cyberbullying. With all this technology many people are communicating through this technology and bullying them through this. Without all this technology it would prevent people from getting cyberbullied.

    4. Great work Jaden. I agree that technology like our phones and our TV's are dangerous for us in many ways. Technology can also affect your mindset. Television shows could teach us many things that could be helpful, but most shows are teaching unrealistic realities. There are pros and cons to this topic, so yes we should use our devices, but don't overuse them.

    5. Jaden, I completely agree that technology can be dangerous to humans. One way we can solve this problem is by limiting the use of technology. Since using technology can be harmful and can lead to many different disorders we can try reading a book to pass time instead. Nice job!

    6. Great job Jaden! I definitely agree that technology like our phones can be dangerous to humans. In many ways these electronics can lead to dangerous outcomes just like you said. These electronics like Tv can lead to people getting obsessed over video games and Tv. People should just go outside for ounce, you know?

  2. Many people today use technology for a lot of things. If someone asked you what technology can be used for, most are likely to say things like texting, phone calls, and social media. Those I won't focus on. Others are probably going to say it's used as a map or a calculator. I'm going to focus on that, rather than the obvious. Types of technology like calculators, electronic maps, and word processors, can actually show examples of people who can't learn or remember the answers to simple math questions, how to spell, and even people who'll end of killing themselves while driving because their GPS instructions didn't get the directions correct and accidentally led them off a cliff instead of their grandmother's house. A simple suggestion on how to help fix this, is to try not to get too dependent on technology. Because sometimes, even if most people don't see it happening, technology could fail on you, and leave you on your own to finish that math quiz. So, always try to learn things from objects that don't have wires and buttons attached in between to try and keep you from becoming fully dependent.

    1. Sara, you’re completely right that we need to be more independent. It’s crazy how ten years ago we didn’t have all of this at the touch of a button and now we need these app to perform simple activities. One danger is that on the GPS when could have made a mistake typing it in and Siri could be taking us in circles or there could be a new landmark that Siri doesn’t know about (personal experience). Also, if we ever had a pop quiz and used our phone for help on homework, we wouldn’t know what to do. We need to be more independent and not as dependent on our phones.

      Delete
    2. I agree that people should not be as dependent on technology as they are. People should make sure they learn how to do math, and write properly and use technology only to occasionally help them, rather than depending on it to solve their problems.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you that people these days are letting technology do work for them, and they are not learning. In earlier years people could navigate without their phones. They used actual maps, and they got around fine. But I also think that people in a hurry can use their phones for maps and calculators; but they should still know how to survive without one.

      Delete
    4. Sara, this was a nice paragraph to read. I agree with you, that we are too reliant on technology. It's crazy to think that the Apple 2 (one of the 1ST home computers) was only released 40 years ago and now what used to take hours to do takes one click of a button. But computers can make mistakes and the more reliant we are on them, the more thrown off we can be if something goes wrong. For example, I almost lost the blogger post that I did for this comment thread and If I didn't write it on a google doc 1st, 30 minutes of work would be gone. Compare this to paper where if I had written the post there, it would be pretty difficult to loose. The more dependent on technology we are, the more problems can occur in our lives if a computer makes a mistake or something doesn't work quite right.

  3. Technology in schools has recently become more and more popular. There are many positive aspects to it, but there are also dangers and downsides. Buying computers, laptops and other devices for each classroom is extremely expensive, and schools are often forced to cut other programs, like art or music, in order to afford them. Also, technology can be a huge distraction for kids in class. This problem can be fixed by using computers less during school, and doing at least some things on paper.

    1. Students might also use technology to cheat on their work, or they might get easily distracted. Maybe schools could use a program that monitors what students are doing on the computers. This way, students might use technology like they're supposed to. Great job!

      Delete
    2. Another con of buying computers for school, is that some schools that can't afford to buy computers for everyone, so they might raise taxes. This would affect families within that district, especially low income families, making them lose money just so that everyone can have access to a computer.

      Delete
    3. Gabriella, I completely agree with your take on this issue. Computers in school can be very costly, and they can also be distracting. A solution I have to prevent distraction is for schools to block sites that are noneducational. This will make sure that students are paying attention, and not playing games or doing other distracting things on computers. School is a time for learning, so students shouldn't be distracted.

      Delete
    4. Great job Gabby! I also agree with your opinion because everyone needs to stay connected to their roots. What I mean by that is, students need to know how to take notes, tests, etc. on paper. There can't be one day in the future when our children don't remember how "to work paper" or write anymore.

      Delete
    5. Great job Gabby! Great paragraph! I agree that computers are a distraction in school kids could be looking at different things while the teacher could be teaching a lesson. Kids could also drop computers which could be very expensive especially when they are younger.

    6. Gabriella, I think you did an amazing job with this piece. Although with the many cons of having electronics and computers in class, there are also a lot of pros too. Without having the technology in class that we have today students wouldn't be able to write papers in the short amount of time that they do today. Overall great job!

  4. "perhaps, in the old days , They ate knowledge to fast." Technology plays a big role in our modern lives. Technology with bright screens, like laptops, phones etc. affect our sleeping cycles. The bright light tricks our brain into thinking it's daytime. Making us stay up later. Technology can contribute to things like obesity by mindlessly eating in front of the T.V. Technology also affects our memory and attention! We could fix this by using our phones, laptops etc. to much.

    1. Good job Juliana! I think a way to solve this issue is to have all computers, TVs, tablets, phones, etc. to have an installment that changes the brightness from blue light (the light that keeps you up at night) to orange light and to the lowest brightness at a specific time at night. Luckily, I have this installment on my phone as a default and it is SOO helpful. It also helps me fall asleep so I use my phone less.

      Delete
    2. This is very true Juliana! Using electronics at least four hours before we sleep is bad for our sleep patterns and our eyes. If turn your brightness down as far as it can go can limit stress on our eyes and improve our sleep patterns. I also believe that smartphone producers are trying to make a nighttime brightness feature!

      Delete
    3. Nice Job Juliana! Another way to prevent this is when your going to bed put your phone, ipad, laptop etc. somewhere where you won't be tempted to use it.

      Delete
    4. Good Job on the paragraph Juliana, The way I solve this is leaving my iphone far away from my bed, so I Am not tempted to use it. The biggest problem with using your phone in right before sleep is the blue light. Studies have shown that there are blue light receptors in your eyes that set your sleep and wake-up times, so the blue light in your phones are telling your brain to wake you up, so you don't get a good nights sleep.

      Delete
    5. Great job Juliana! Great paragraph! I agree with you that we should use our devices less. Our devices can really effect our sleep and it can also make us not tired. Then we don't fall asleep until 2-4 in the morning and it could also be a school night so we wouldn't be rested at all. Which means are brain wouldn't be able to function.

  5. ''Perhaps in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.'' John says in the story ''By the waters of Babylon'' by Stephen Vincent Benet. Technology changes all the time and the affect it has on people's lives. Cell phones are a popular item among the world today, out of the 7 billion people walking our Earth, 6 billion have access to a mobile phone. When in public, people are on their phones instead of socializing. Socializing and interacting with people is a great way to meet and find common interests with other human beings. Social skills are in decline and people without their phones don't know how to small talk. Try going out without your phone, join a sport, or help out in your community. Technology is hurting society every day, let's turn that opposing statement around.

Usually sticking to your phone screan like a magnet means you don't care enough about what is around you. Phone usage is okay in moderation. I agree with your suggestions to get involved in something other than technology all the time. Anna, this is a very informative post!

    2. I agree with you, Anna. Another danger about mobile phones is that many people don't think twice about pictures or videos they send or even take on their phones. Anything you do on your phone can be traced down with a click of a button. This is why we should all be aware of what content appears on our phones.

  6. Technology, it's a scary thing if we use it without caution. We use phones as if they were our mouths and we use computers as much as we walk. One of the scariest things, in my opinion, is machines that build, serve and the fact about them controlling bombs and such. Machines take jobs that we live of off making it harder for kids just graduating from school trying to get on their feet. One way we could fix this is reducing the influence of machines in our workforce or just have them for extra assistance instead of having them do all the work.(http://www.edudemic.com/the-4-negative-side-effects-of-technology/)

This displays the deteriorating intelligence of humans.

For troops on the ground, a UAV can be a savior, but if the enemy takes control of it then what can it really do to us? We don't realize that drone strikes are devastating. And "fire and forget" missiles as they are called, can be redirected to any target after they are fired. I love the paragraph, Knight!

  8. One technological advancement that I believe we should not rush is cloning. I think that we should do certain cloning of organs for humans and animals to help them if they are missing the organs or if theirs are damaged. Right now humans are able to clone human embryos. The ability of cloning comes from only one cell so that growth is less random because the offspring has the exact copy of original DNA. I think we should slow down in the cloning field because eventually we will want to clone humans even though the United Nations General Assembly banned all forms of human cloning in 2005 including both reproductive and therapeutic.

    2. I agree with you that cloning is harmful to us, and that we should take a step back from it. But I think once our government does a little more research we will be able to use cloning more safely.

    3. I think cloning technology is very dangerous, but we should still try to work out how to do it. It could potentially be a life-changing thing, and if our technology grows enough to carry out cloning, it could really help society later on. We do however need to take our time, because it can be very dangerous.

Now you don't need to be worried, there are things you can do to avoid this issue from happening to you! Your also probably wondering "well..whats the issue?"
The issue we have today with credit cards and banking is identity theft. Identity theft is when another individual uses someone else's info or credit card. Now, how to avoid this issue? Simple! However as technology passes firewalls and responsibility seem to be getting more scarce meanwhile hacking can be done by any teenager. Hacking is becoming almost a profession with no end in sight. Many individuals use this for identity theft and other finical crimes. I believe with more responsibility and more safety checks we will be able to limit the amount of identity thefts that happen day in and day out globally.

    4. Gina, this is a great topic that many people use today. I think it’s sad that identity theft exists, I wonder why people even came up with that idea in the first place? One way I know people tried to solve this is the chip reader cards because when you use them you have to put in a 4 digit security code. Another way to solve this is when you go to a store or the bank there should be a piece over the little machine that you put all the information into so, no one can see the number.

    5. Gina, I completely agree with you. Credit cards and banking may seem like the easiest way to handle money, but is it worth the risks? If hackers can get your credit card number, they could freely spend money with it and it would come from your pocket.

  11. The internet is technology that a lot of people use without being aware or caring about the dangers of. First of all, cyberbullying is a huge problem. The internet has many anonymous chat groups and ways to talk to people, so insults can be easily received. Online predators and inappropriate content are also struggles online. According to a study done by the Crimes Against Children Research Center, children who talk to online predators and do risky things online have weaker relationships with their parents. Another thing that is a problem online is damaged reputations. Social media makes it very easy to share content that will be regretted in a certain amount of time… especially when children are getting social media so young and don’t know what is right and wrong to post. Phones and internet access are given to children at a very young age and this can hurt them when applying for colleges or jobs. Excessive gaming is one final problem on the internet. Children spend hours on video games and get addicted. This can be bad for their vision and health both mentally and physically. The internet can be a great tool but can also be harmful to the people that use it if they do not know how to use it correctly. One way to make children more aware on the Internet is to teach them what and what not to do on social media, make sure that they inform their parents if anything bad happens and to make sure that they are doing the correct things on the internet. If children know what can happen, this will make them more careful and aware when posting something or chatting with someone.

We use social media for everything like taking pictures, even posting inappropriate content, talking with friends, taking videos, and posting paragraphs about your life or what is going on in your life right now. Social media can be dangerous to anyone. A danger is that it is an absolute waste of time. You should be going outside and playing. You should enjoy life while you're still here but people who have social media don’t go get fresh air a lot because they are usually inside taking pictures and seeing what others have posted. Another danger is comparing yourself to other people. Some people compare themselves to one another especially on social media because you can make yourself look different by using filters and editors. But you shouldn’t compare yourself to other people because you are all different in some way and no one should edit pictures just to make yourself look better everyone is wonderful in their own way. We could post pictures of the real you no filter just your wonderful self and don’t compare yourself to people be yourself. I think that if we just transferred everything to solar energy we could make our earth a lot safer and the people on it a lot happier.

    3. Marcus, I totally agree with this issue. It is very bad for our environment and is very expensive. We could use more solar fuels. The technology is growing, but we are only at the tip of the iceberg. Great Job!

    4. Marcus very good topic i like the way you started saying about what the topic is. I agree that we should not be rushing things or bad stuff can happen.I like how you a very big detail to summarize it all. We can lots of things to fix this such as double checking before we go through.

    5. Marcus, I agree with your issue. Oil drilling is very bad for our environment. Without oil drilling we would have a much better environment. Oil drilling can also lead to more global warming. Its also very expensive to do this. If we tried to use more sources of energy besides oil that would help.Great job!

  14. Have you ever been so exasperated that you felt your blood start to boil? If so, you may want to run from your cellular device before you get yourself into trouble, because, if “your messages are overemotional, demanding, and bordering on desperate, then you have most likely escalated to the cyber crime of stalking by texting.” The most common forms of stalking include making phone calls/sending texts, sending letters and spreading rumors about someone else. While this may not seem like such a crime, the maximum penalties include imprisonment for up to a year and/or a possible $1000.00 fine. Perhaps, to avoid this type of behavior, cell phones should measure one’s blood pressure before allowing a text to be sent or phone call to be made. While this could become possible in our day and age, for now, the biggest way to protect yourself from being accused of this is when feeling like your head is going to explode, you take a deep breath and back away from your digital device.

    1. Good job Mikey! This paragraph is very well written. Except for the fact of that I completely disagree with what you are saying. I do not think it would be a smart idea to have cellphones measure your bloodpressure before alowing you to send a text or message. It would be to costly to but that type of machinery in a cellphone. Also what if someone goes for a late night jog and their blood pressure is up but they need to send a message. huh?

      p.s. not guilty

    2. Great job Kavo! I agree with this issue of "stalking by texting." Many problems will arise form this such as anxiety from all the unwanted texts, and the person who is sending all those texts may get a feeling of depression if they don't get a reply back. A possible solution to this issue is to limit the amount of time you use your phone everyday, and to simply not send rumors or anything bad through text as it will hurt you in the future.

    3. I do agree that sometimes we get a little too emotional when we use our phones. But to make your phone chose when it's the right time to use it could be potentially dangerous. Say if someone was in trouble and they tried to call for help but their phone wouldn't let them in because their blood pressure was too high. In some moments you don't have the time to slow down your blood pressure. Adding this to a phone could change the outcome in a life or death situation.

    6. Cyber-stalking or really just cyber-bullying in general isn’t just harmful to the perpetrator because of the consequence, it also leaves deep scars on the victim of the crime. The official site www.stopbullying.gov reports that adolescents who have been cyberstalked/bullied are more likely to misuse alchohol and drugs, skip school, have a dead self-esteem and maybe even skip school. Your paragraph was written very eloquently, but I disagreed with having our phone measure our blood pressure. I think that school and work environments should educate people more on self-control when it comes using electronics, and also teach how to “let off steam” in a different way when you are angry.

  15. In the story "By the waters of babylon", Stephen Vincent Benet gave us the lesson that our technological advancement could lead to our own destruction. A dangerous technology is the Nuclear Bomb. The nuclear bomb was used in World War 2 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and led to the destruction of many innocent lives. A way we could be more careful about nuclear warfare is simply to not used these type of weapons at all.

    1. Haven, I completely agree with this. Nuclear weapons are downright awful for use against humans. The devastating effects to both humans and the Earth itself are just shocking. The US and partners, i.e. NATO and the UN, have been trying to ban the use of all weapons of mass destruction, but there are some countries that won't follow along, and if we want a safer world we need to work out these issues so we can end Nukes. Love it, Haven!

    2. Great job Haven! I agree that nuclear bombs should not be used ever again because of all of the devastating effects they caused. however, there are many countries that will likely never give up their WMDs. I think that those countries might if they get something out of it, but never out of the goal of world peace.

    3. Haven, I partially agree and disagree. The part I agree with is they may be too dangerous for us at this time, but the part I disagree with is that if you think about it we need ways to strike fear into countries. No country wants to get into a nuclear war, and if we got rid of them we would just create something even worse. It's just like what Mrs Cahill taught us about Militarism it's an endless loop. We can get ride of one mass murdering weapon but than another country would make something even worse, or it could be better but eventually it will develop back into something on the grounds of nuclear war.

    4. Great job on this paragraph! I do agree with your stance on nuclear weapons, as using and developing these weapons will only lead to more conflict. If these weapons are used, a nuclear war will break out and might possibly wipe out the human race. Nuclear winters and other side effects of nuclear weapons follow the use of these weapons. A solution would be to use different types of weapons. With the advancement of technology at such a rapid rate, a weapon that is powerful but won't have the effects that nuclear ones do is almost certain to be created sometime in the future.

    5. This paragraph is well written Haven, good job. Nuclear weapons can lead to big problems in the world when they are used, because they are killers. Like with what you mentioned about Nagasaki and Hiroshima, they have the power to kill hundreds, and level entire towns and cities. A good solution CAN be to never use them at all, but we'd need an alternative that can be powerful, but won't cause as much destruction and heartbreak. That and if we don't use them, it could grow into something worse. This may sound like I'm repeating some people's words here, and sorry if I do, but it's true.
