In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly. In one paragraph:
- describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
- offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
- at the end, paste the url of a website from which you did some reading about the dangers of using the technology.
Computers have become a major part in most of our lives. However, a lot of us have still not realized the dangers that computers have on our bodies. Back strain and eye strain are just some of the many problems that a computer brings. For back strain, you should get a fully adjustable chair for good posture and a you could adjust the screen tilt on your computer to avoid any awkward positions. For eye strain, you could get screen filters that will remove many of the screen rays that will damage your eyes. You could also take regular breaks after an hour on the computer. This will give your eyes a break after staring at the computer for too long. Overall, a lot of people don't realize the physical impact a computer has on your body, but there are simple ways to solve these problems.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/ict/implications/3healthandsafetyrev3.shtml
I like your paragraph Stella! I think that another solution is that we should lower the brightness of our computers and all electronics. I also think that we should use a chair that has a back to rest OUR backs against the chair for better posture.
DeleteThis is a great paragraph Stella! Another danger is you can be exposed to computer radiation. This can cause a change in your DNA you can't reverse, and other various conditions. Another solution is to not get too close to your computer monitor because it could cause eye problems.
DeleteGreat job, Stella! Some more dangers of using computers is using them late at night exposes us to blue light, which can lead to higher rates of heart disease, possible obesity, high blood pressure, other cardiovascular problems, and it messes with one's melatonin levels. One solution to this problem is to turn off computers after dark so that you avoid exposure to blue light or one can wear orange sunglasses after dark to minimize the blue light one sees.
DeleteGood job on the paragraph! I agree on how the eye strain is really bad for our health, so I think we could set limits on how much screen time you have each day. If you have self discipline, you can stop yourself from indulging in too much time on the computer. The light from the computer can be blinding, so I suggest using a yellow light application on the computer that will decrease eye strain.
DeleteI like your statement Stella. This is a problem with many easy and cheap solutions one is just having the brightness down so you don't strain your eyes
DeleteOne technology we have had for thousands of years is alcohol. Wine dates back to 6000 B.C.. The Egyptians possibly developed beer around 9000 B.C.. In Medieval Europe beer was considered "healthy", and was consumed by almost everyone. To this day many people indulge in alcohol, and we've made more potent and quality forms of alcohol. A few shots of liquor will put anyone out of commission. Alcohol can be a problem for many people. Lots of teen deaths are caused by overdoses of alcohol (and other drugs such as painkillers, marijuana, inhalants, and other harder drugs), or car accidents related to alcohol. Teens shouldn't be exposed to alcohol at all! Much less overdosing on it. Alcohol can be a good thing though, but only in moderation. Just about everything should be taken in moderation. Alcohol needs to be moderated , and more laws should be enforced about keeping anyone under 21 away from alcohol. This will result in less car accidents, less overdoses, and hopefully a drunk-free world.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.whoinvented.org/who-invented-alcohol/
Jaiden, I think that alcohol is an issue, but not as much as it was in the past. While it still is deadly, it may not exactly be a total threat unless misused. I think that to prevent any wrong doings with alcohol, we should try to make sure people can't forge fake IDs, and if they are of legal age, there should be some form of limit to how much one can consume before being cut off. Lovely paragraph, sir!
DeleteJaiden, you did a nice job, but I feel like alcohol isn't really a problem as much as it was in the 20th century. Also I feel that alcohol isn't really a technology. But to prevent people from taking advantage of it would be that if people forgot their ID's or license the bouncer or bartender could look it up. Otherwise , good job!
DeleteJaiden, I think that alcohol is a very dangerous price of technology that we have today. Many people don't realize it, but teenagers abuse alcohol. It is a huge issue with many families.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteJaiden I agree, Alcohol is dangerous if taken out of proportion. Yet I don't feel like alcohol is a technology issue it's still an issue. A way we can prevent dangerous situations is better rehab because, we cant completely get rid of it that wouldn't work. good job!
DeletePhones are a danger that we don't consider today we are using our devices to much that radiation from them is hurting our bodies and slowly killing us. Like how John saw the dead places with people that were dead. We can solve this by trying to minimize the use of phones and try to rely on them as little as possible. We could try to set small goals of how long we use our phones. We could read books or get our information from another source. we could also invent technology that doesn't cause radiation our hurt our bod y in any way.
ReplyDeletewww.lifextension.com/magazine/2007/8/reportcellphone_radiation/page-01
Pratul i Understand your point but I don't understand your point in how using phones will quickly deteriorate our bodies from the inside. I think what the technology in the phones could be used for would be the downfall to our society. Other than that great work.
DeleteI agree with the radiation problem of phones. One solution I think would work is to not have your phone close to you if you are not using it. So, not keeping phones in pockets would help cause less radiation.
DeleteGreat job Pratul. I think that you should explain how/why Phones put out radiation. Another problem with Phones is that people spend hours staring into them while they could be doing something productive.
DeleteGood paragraph, Pratul. Yet, I think the main danger in phones is the abundance of social media that we expose ourselves to on a daily basis. Phones are our main way of connecting ourselves to social media, and the overall internet. With our constant need of gratification from others through the internet, we form an unhealthy dependence on our phones.
DeleteToday almost everyone has a cell phone. There are many perks to having one,its their connection to the world. What people don't seem to realize is that cell phone radiation increases risks for certain types of cancer, including leukemia. So we should all be careful while we use our phones, like keeping at least 10 mm of space between you and your phone. You should also use a speaker or a wired headset when calling someone because your phone will not be against your head. Which will decrease the amount of radiation your head will be absorbing. Even though having a phone has its benefits it's radiation can also harm you, but if you use ways to protect yourself you'll be fine.
ReplyDeletehttp://projectcensored.org/15-dangers-of-everyday-technology/
I think this is a great issue to bring up. People mostly see the pros about phones, like being able to communicate better, but no one ever thinks about the health issues. Also, phones distract people when they're driving. People think that they can check their phone because it would only take a few seconds, but in those few seconds, a car could crash into you and you would be dead or badly injured all because you wanted to text a friend. Even if it's at a red light, you never know when it will turn green again. Or even if you're on a road that seems empty, you never know when another car will show up out of the blue. People rely too much on the chance that nothing will happen in those few seconds instead of just being responsible and turning their phones off to drive for a few minutes. There's a simple solution to this. You could actually turn off your phone, and if that's too hard for you, you could put it in the back seat or another place that you wouldn't be able to reach. Or if it's really urgent and you have to check your phone, pull up to the side of the road or at a store parking lot until you can focus on driving again.
DeleteShruthika, thanks for bringing up this is pretty important issue that many people know about, but don't really act upon. Many people sleep with phones very close to them, which isn't exactly a great idea. Just moving your phone into the hallway or even just to the other side of the room when you're bound to not be using it is already an easy way to remain safe with cell phones. The more people talk about an issue the more people will pay attention to it, so just taking a few safety precautions might save you from a car accident or cancer.
DeleteGreat Job! Another problem that can happen is the radiation destroys proteins in the brain when they get exposed to the radiation. I totally agree with your solutions to the problem, we should keep our phones away from our face.
DeleteGreat paragraph Shruthika! Another solution could be to not use your phone as much which could limit the amount of radiation that our head is absorbing as well.
DeleteGreat job! It is dangerous to have all that radiation absorbed into our bodies. A simple solution is just to use your phone less
DeleteMicrowaves are used in practically every household in the United States. They are used for the convenience of quickly cooking food. Microwaves use a form of radiation, called non-ionizing radiation, that isn’t harmful to humans when it is utilized in low dosages and without long term exposure. The long term effects of this radiation can still be harmful to humans, despite it being considered “safer” than other forms of radiation. To limit the damage that is inflicted upon users of the microwave, it should only be used occasionally. Alternative methods of cooking (such as baking) could also be used. Microwaves are safe for cooking food, as long as they are not overused.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/why-you-should-never-microwave-your-food/
Ali,
DeleteI think that another solution would be for companies to try to reduce the amount of radiation their microwaves use. The less radiation there is, the safer they are. Or to try and find another way to make them work, without radiation, which would be the safest method.
It is true that people often use microwaves so they don"t have to recook food. Instead of minimizing the time we are using them maybe we could use something on the inside of them to absorb the radiation.
DeleteAli, I did not realize that microwaves could potentially be dangerous. Another way we could limit the use of microwaves is to raise the costs of microwaves so less people can afford to buy them. If people aren’t buying them then they won’t use them. We could also have companies make less microwaves, so less people will have them to use often.
DeleteAwesome view on our everyday use of technology. By informing people on the hazardous radiation from the over use of microwaves could help so many change the way they use their own microwaves. Also if modern day inventors focus enough on reducing the dangers from household products, like microwaves, we can have safer environments to live in.

DeleteBuying new clothes almost every week doesn’t seem like a big deal, right? Buying new clothes weekly is actually a bad thing. The fashion industry is a huge industry. They make about 3 trillion dollars a year. The companies in the fashion industry make a immense profit off of cheap labor in foreign countries. 97% of items are made overseas. 40 million garment workers are in the world, many of them don’t share the same rights or protection that many people in the West do. Garment workers are some of the lowest paid workers, and about 85% are women. Fast fashion, which is new fashion that comes out almost every week, takes a huge toll on the environment. The average American now generates 82 pounds of textile waste per year. That adds up to more than 11 million tons of textile waste from the US alone. But, we can all stop this trend. When you shop, ask yourself this question: Will I wear this 30 times? If the answer is no, don’t buy it. Don’t buy clothes every week. Just buy once or twice a month. Think before you buy. Think about the true cost.
ReplyDeletehttp://truecostmovie.com/
Sydney,
DeleteI agree that we should stop buying clothes in such short periods of time. I think a solution could be for the clothing stores to refuse to take new shipments in so constantly. If the clothing store doesn't take the clothes in every week, then maybe companies would take the hint, and stop churning out product non-stop.
Sydney, this is a big issue that I’ve never thought of before. We should stop buying so much clothing for such a short period of time. We think we need something right that minute, but eventually we will grow out of it. One solution could be stores not accepting non-american made clothing and that would make there be less low paying and dangerous jobs in foreign countries. Also, when we can’t fit into our clothes anymore we should donate it to the less fortunate.
DeleteSydney, this is an issue that most people don't think about. We should only buy clothes that we'll wear a lot and not buy it to wear it once. I think we should consider the effort, time and work that goes into making these clothes instead of being greedy. Great job Syd! -Carrington
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI have never considered this before, but thank you for bringing it to mind! Many rich people, or just people who spend extra money on clothes, buy tons of clothes that they will never wear! The clothes sits in their closet unworn until eventually they find it all dusty and throw it away. Same thing for baby clothes, a baby will really only be able to wear baby clothes for a few months before they have to size up.
DeleteToday, we use many new pieces of technology without thinking of the negative side. One example of this is social media. The increase in use of social media has also led to an increase in bullying; cyber bullying. Now, people can comment things on social media with the click of a button or the tap of a finger, but people can comment things that aren't nice and that they probably wouldn't say in person. We could use it better by thinking more about what we say online and how we would feel if someone said it to us. Also, we can try to get rid of these comments by monitoring them better.
ReplyDeletehttp://roogirl.com/25-negative-effects-of-technology/
Social media is both a lover and a killer, there are some things people post to social media that are really helpful or nice, then there are the things that are extremely hurtful or bad. Schools actually have a system where if there is cyberbullying against a student, said student can report this to administration and get the cyberbully the justice they deserve. However, it is not always enforced, and most times if cyber bullying is reported the administration may just sweep it under the rug and give the bully a detention. We should get on this and help make areas safer for everyone. Love the paragraph!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSocial media would be a lot better if people just didn't respond to rude posts or say something mean about someone else's post. Also it is important that people know that social media's aren't places where they should talk about personal lives, strong beliefs and strong disbeliefs.
DeleteI agree with you social media is a problem and people take advantage in social media because people don't know who the person is that is posting rude and inappropriate comments and sometimes people get away with these rude comments and so people these days just act negatively. So we need to come up with a solution to prevent these rude comments for an example if someone is posting rude comments we can just ban them from what source he is posting rude comments.
DeleteI agree with you social media can be very dangerous. A danger of social media is if someone is being bullied that could lead to the person to inflict self-harm or even kill it's self.
DeleteNice paragraph Ricky. I agree that cyberbully is a big problem, but there's another element that can make it worse. If the media the bully is using allows them to go anonymous, not only will people get bullied, but they won't know who the bully is. It can lead to some major problems for the victim, because they want to deal with them and make them stop, but they can't because they don't know who they are. The option to go anon was meant for people who want to talk, but are too shy to show themselves, but this system has been abused by bullies, and caused more problems than helped them.
DeleteWeapons have become a huge part of our lives. One third of Americans own guns in their house hold, and there are over 300 million guns in the US. There has been many mass shootings and many lives have been taken not only today but in the past. The atomic bomb was a huge advancement in military technology but it took 80,000 innocent lives in a short amount of time. Now today unthinkable weapons are being created to take life and to cause pain to innocent civilians like you and me. A way to reduce the use of weapons such as guns is to tighten background checks and to limit the amount of weapons that are sold to the public. Guns and weapons should only be used by police, the military and other government branches. If no one in public has a weapon the world and society will be safer.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.factcheck.org/2015/10/gun-laws-deaths-and-crimes/

DeleteI partially agree with you, but I partially disagree. I do think that if we were to tighten our background checks and make it extremely hard to get a gun like a pistol and a shotgun(hunting rifles are a little different). Now with only cops having guns can bring up millions of issues just think about what would happen if a group of corrupt cops ganged up; it could be mass murder. I believe that if we went back to bow and arrows or something like swords which may sound funny, but I think its the only real concrete solution that may make things more fair.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI completely agree with you. I do not believe that any weapons should be sold to the public. Another way to reduce the amount of weapons in the public could be by giving people incentives, such as money (in another form besides cash) to turn in weapons. This is a suggestion that would (by no means) prevent any large scale shootings or intended violence, but it could possibly eliminate the massive amounts of weapons that are in the public or on the streets.
DeleteI agree. If we come together to completely take away the mistreated use of weapons it will be a safer environment for everyone. Many countries have already started making their way towards tighter gun laws. Some countries have even banned dangerous weapons such as guns all together. If we work together to tighten weapon laws most likely people won't even feel that they need to have a weapon in their household. Which would definitely reduce the number of weapons people have in our society.
DeleteI agree and disagree. I do believe that guns are very dangerous and there should be background checks, but I think more than just the police force should have guns. It even says so in the Constitution, people have their rights to bare arms, but U.S should definitely have some stricter background checks. We don't want psychos roaming around with guns.
DeleteCell phones have become our most reliable piece of technology. An average person has a type of cell phone with them. However, the cell phone isn't as safe as it seems. Studies have shown that 50 minutes of cell phone radiation excites the brain. The radiation from the cell phones can increase the amount of glucose in the brain. Glucose can affect the brain by damaging reactive oxygen radicals that can alter the cells and genes. 10 volunteers were exposed to one hour of cell phone radiation and it revealed that the radiation changed the levels of eight proteins in the brain. THe radiation isn't mentioned by most companies, but it affects the costumer's health. To avoid the effects of the radiation, you can use your cell phone more carefully. You can keep it away from your head by using headphones. You could also make sure that you're not putting it by your head for long periods of time. Most people don't realize the dangers of a cell phone, but when you know them, you can easily avoid them.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/devra-davis-phd/cell-phone-radiation-_b_828330.html
Carrington,
DeleteI agree with you that cellphones are more dangerous than they seem. Phones use a type of battery that contains flammable liquid. If we use the phone too much, it will overheat. Over heating the phone could lead to the battery, and the phone exploding.
Cellphone radiation is definitely a major problem. One way we could fix this is possibly keep phones farther away from our faces and possibly dimming the light to them. Great Paragraph!-Daniyaal
DeleteCarri, great job! Cell phones are more dangerous than we think they are. Another solution to the problem is not using our phones until they die, that's when they give off the most radiation.
DeleteCell phones are a huge problem, mostly because offensive/mean material can be communicated to other people in an instant. To stop this I believe phone companies should create an update/software that bans the use of some offensive words.
DeleteSure nuclear power is a good thing, it provides cheap energy that is environmentally clean. Sadly it’s not all good, first off these facilities release dangerous levels of radiation to nearby communities when these types of machines meltdown, second people who work in these facilities have high risk of danger, and more risks of certain diseases. Severe incidents can occur, like the Chernobyl Disaster. This was when a steam explosion released dangerous amounts of radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere of countries, such as Europe and the USSR. This also led to mass deaths due to diseases in these regions, main was cancer. Not only this but, this can lead to more nuclear weapons, which of course leads to nuclear warfare, and high tensions among countries. Perhaps we were not ready for nuclear energy yet.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.greenpeace.org/usa/global-warming/issues/nuclear/
Hayden, I believe we could reduce these high risk dangers by cutting back on nuclear power, not totally get rid of them just stop relying on nuclear power so much. Also more should be done to check these power plants so more disaster don't happen.
DeleteHayden, I agree with your claim. The ways nuclear power can be used is scary. Not only can they be a source of power, but they can also be a source of destruction. Take Hiroshima for example. Little boy was dropped on it and killed over 140000 people. We could prevent this by only testing nuclear devices on deserted islands in the middle of the sea to try to reduce death if a scenario like Chernobyl occurred.
DeleteI completely agree that nuclear power can be very dangerous. Another danger of the nuclear industry is that generating the power is extremely expensive, and it could potentially put some countries in debt. Nice job Hayden, your paragraph was very well written!
DeleteYour right, Nuclear Power is not a good thing, at all. I think if we just learn to not use chemicals and air pollutants, the world would be a much better place.
DeleteToday, pretty much everyone has some sort of social media. 26% of American adults had some sort of it in 2008 and the number rose to 76%. Social media is used for communication but it's not always positive. There are many people on the internet who just post offensive things. The saying "think before you speak" is really underrated and I think people should actually follow that advice. Before posting something, people should take the time to see if there's anything insulting.
ReplyDeletehttp://socialnetworking.procon.org/
Matea,I agree social media started as a way to communicate but now it can be used as a way to cyber bully other people.Social media can also distract people, students especially from doing what they are suppose to be doing. It can cause some people to to inseperatable from their phones.Which can lead to other problems.
DeleteMatea, I completely agree with your take on this. On social media, cyber bullying happens so often. Another danger social media causes is with privacy. People often post personal things on social media. After it is posted, the whole world can see it. You don't want strangers to see personal things about you because they might use it to do bad things. Social media is good in many ways, but it is also dangerous. Privacy is one way that social media can be dangerous.
DeleteMatea, this is a great issue to bring up. Another problem with social media is that people may be so addicted to it that they're not spending enough time in the real world. Some people could be more focused on maintaining a Snapchat streak than making sure they don't fail school or get into a car accident. If people are more careful, they could easily maintain an A or stay safe on the road. People could definitely be so much safer very easily with social media, so thanks for bringing up this important issue!
DeleteGreat paragraph. The effect of posting embarrassing or offensive things on the internet can also have long term effects. Colleges and companies will look at your digital presence, which includes social media. There won't just be a moment of embarrassment. You will have tainted your image online, and affected your future.
DeleteI definitely agree with this. People sometimes don't understand that what is out on the internet will get an effect from anyone who see's it. Whether it's good or bad. We need to be more aware of the people around us, and how the things we post on social media will effect them.

ReplyDeletePokemon Go was a great hit on the young minds of the western world; this interactive game that uses real life places, and makes people walk to play was a great idea, but can also be dangerous. The game producers and managers never thought of the consequences of playing this "fun" game. People have been playing while driving, and even trespassing onto others properties to get that "valuable" pikachu. Dozens have been killed or injured. The one thing that the game managers could of done was to make specific parts of the playable parts of the world restricted, such as homes, businesses and work places. Their greed blinded them of the importance of the safety of the people and players. http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/gaming/2016/07/21/bad-and-ugly-pokmon-go/87378730/
I agree that this is a big problem because since people are easily addicted to anything they will become so obsessed that they will do anything just to get a new Pokemon. A good solution to this problem would be to have Pokemon at public places like malls and parks so that people don't go over the top at other places like private offices and homes.
DeleteI agree that this is a big problem because since people are easily addicted to anything they will become so obsessed that they will do anything just to get a new Pokemon. A good solution to this problem would be to have Pokemon at public places like malls and parks so that people don't go over the top at other places like private offices and homes.
DeleteKenny, I agree that Pokemon Go is a hazard. But not only does it cause many car related accidents, but hackers could hack into the game easily and find your location with only a couple of swipes of their phone. If you think about it, the game is a stalker's best friend.
DeleteKenny, I agree that Pokemon go is very dangerous. One guy got out of his car to go catch Pikachu and he left his keys in the ignition and it got stolen the game has made people act like idiots. Not only is texting and driving dangerous but now we have to worry about texting and playing Pokemon go. One way to fix this is to delete the game forever just like Flappy Bird.
DeleteIn the year 2016, the phrase “Social Media” is something that pretty much everyone- especially younger generations is/are familiar with. Ways for people to communicate outside of physically seeing each other has developed drastically from sending pigeon mail or talking on the telephone. The first recognizable social media site called Six Degrees was created in 1997 and since then hundreds more have followed (Facebook in 2004 and Twitter in 2006.). Browsing and posting on these sites help you feel connected to a community, but there are downsides. Like having a false connection to the world and not being able to differentiate between the real and virtual world, which can damage real relationships. Another study showed that 1.5% of office productivity was “shaved off” from Facebook usage and companies lost 2.2 billion dollars last year alone because of this. Social Media is a wonderful tool to connect with others, but everything should be in moderation. How about social media apps reminding people when usage is too much? Or implementing Social Media Education in school? Those are good solutions.
ReplyDeletehttp://smallbusiness.chron.com/negative-effect-social-media-society-individuals-27617.html
DeleteSuhani, social media is taking over people's lives, and bringing up an issue more often is the best way to help fix it. Many people also aren't being safe with social media as they could be, as they're posting personal information publicly, which could potentially kill them. Not only is safety an issue with this, but things like jobs and colleges will look at what people say on social media, and if someone makes the wrong choices, they may have trouble getting a job or into college. This is one of those things that can be easily fixed, and the first step is people understanding that things you post online do stay there forever.
DeleteMany people spend hours on social media so a solution is needed. I think that one solution would be to instead of talk to friends over social media call them on the phone or even see them in person. Then you are actually communicating with people outside of social media.
DeleteSuhani, social media is a huge issue that many people don't think about. The hours spent on social media consumes time from work. I think another solution to this problem is to set time limits on social media so we don't end up spending hours and hours looking at the same thing.
DeleteYou did a really good job Suhani! Another problem with social media is that people are constantly comparing themselves to other people. Also, another solution could be to limit the amount of time spent on social media
DeleteOver 90% of americans have a smart phone. around 78% of americans have a social media profile. You may think, its just social media what could go wrong?, or ill be safe nothing could happen to me. You could be wrong. Over 20% of social media accounts will get hacked at some point. Ashlee you are absolutely right! We at this very minute may have our Instagrams and Facebooks hacked. We should stop using public wifi. Anyone can hack into any account or device which is under or using public wifi. We have to make public wifi and make our passwords harder to guess. We have to stop accessing dangerous websites as well.
DeleteAshlee, I agree that people need to be more careful about our social media accounts. Another way we can prevent getting hacked is to make sure we don’t use the same passwords for all of our accounts. If you use the same password for everything, and someone hacks one of your accounts, they will be able to get into all of your accounts.
DeleteAshlee, I totally agree with you. I think people should be careful picking out their passwords and not making it something people could figure out easily. I also think people should be careful who we give passwords to so the accounts don't get hacked. Great job! -Carrington
DeleteGreat job Ashlee! I totally agree with you on this issue. Hackers could easily access your personal information if you are not careful. People should make complex passwords, and encrypt your information when you are talking to someone on social media.
DeleteI agree with you Ashlee, we should be safer with our electronic gadgets and we should also be careful on social media. You should always set your Instagram or Twitter account to private so that hackers won't be able to get in and you will be safer. We should also make passwords more stronger and encrypted so that hackers don't break into your bank account and steal all your money. Great Job!!!
DeleteMany modern day prescription drugs help with their designated effect, but there will be side effects to go along with it. Around 4.5 million Americans every year go to the doctor or hospital due to the negative side effects from prescription drugs. Yet, many people just take the drug anyway, as they feel the risk is less than the reward. It doesn't have to be that kind of mindset. We could ditch the "lesser of two evils" plan if we would just take more time developing these medicines. Serious side effects such as risk of death or a chance to contract a fatal disease should not be in prescription drugs. If we spend more time trying to purify our medicine so that we lessen the bad effects, we could take them without having to worry about ten other problems.
ReplyDeletedrugwatch.com/side-effects
I think you're definitely right. Although everything has side effects, we need to find a way to get rid of most of them, at least the more serious ones. Another problem with prescription drugs is that they're so easy obtain that people take them just for recreational purposes. People can either take more than the recommended amount of their own medication, or they find someone else's and decide to take a few. These are both extremely dangerous. If you take more than recommended for your own, you'll probably experience those serious side effects, or you may even overdose. If you take someone else's, you also risk overdose because the medication is made specific to one person's characteristics like their height and weight. We can easily fix this issue by following the directions of the drugs that are on the container, or that the doctor gave you.
DeleteI definitely agree with you. Another problem with prescription drugs is overdose. Thousands die a year on drug overdose and scientist should come up with a way to make less addictive drugs the work just as well -Daniyaal
DeleteI completely agree with your stand on this issue. Another problem with prescription drugs is drug abuse. Almost every household contains at least one prescription drug bottle, making it very easy for people to take pills that are not even prescribed for them. Very good paragraph, Edward!
DeleteA problem with prescription drugs is that doctors can prescribe the wrong drugs or give more than the patient needs. Doctors aren't always right like commercials say so researching drugs before you take them can tell you what you really need to know.
DeleteThough we have harnessed the power of nuclear reactions, we still have to be careful of the dangers that it produces. Radiation is one of the biggest problems of nuclear energy. Radiation, even though the average man is struck by 15,000 particles a second, can cause cancer and affect reproduction. 30 quintillion particles, the amount produced by nuclear energy plants, hitting the body causes cancer in exposed body parts and reproduction problems due to the changing of the DNA. Though nuclear power plants create little waste, it is one of the hardest to dispose of without hurting wildlife. However, it will kill one person within 50 years of the operation of getting rid of the waste. Unlike nuclear waste, coal energy plant’s waste will kill several thousand people for the same amount of energy that kills a person for nuclear power. The nuclear power plant design strategy for preventing accidents and mitigating (to lessen force) their potential effects is a “defense in depth” you could say. If one part of the system fails, there will always be backup. However, those backup systems may not work, leading to catastrophic failures, like a nuclear meltdown. However, this does not compare to the 10,000 deaths caused by coal a year so 25 nuclear meltdowns will cause as many deaths as coal does a year. The average death count of nuclear meltdown is 400 people. Rarely there will be one meltdown that estimates to a 10 million casualties, about 32.9% of the United States total population (which is something that hasn’t happened yet, thank God). If we could find a way to make this safer, we could use this and replace other types of power like coal, oil, and natural gasses and keep the same amount of energy production throughout the world. Moreover, we can exploit other types of clean energy to developing countries like water, but that kind of powers near a populated area can have a significant downside. Wind power, solar power, and physical power, when people want, or need, to work out, they can work out and create power for a place that needs it like hospitals.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.physics.isu.edu/radinf/np-risk.htm
DeleteI completely agree with your stance on this problem. Nuclear power plants are a big problem in many ways. The materials that are used like mercury, cadmium and arsenic are all toxic and can do lots of damage if handled poorly. We could solve this problem by trying to use different materials that aren't as toxic as the ones we are using. Good job!
DeleteI agree that nuclear power plants are very dangerous. Just look at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant that had a meltdown almost six years ago, and still to this day almost 32 million people are being affected by the radiation that was released when it meltdown.
DeleteAnother danger of nuclear power plants is that they negatively affect the environment. They require constant water usage to function and generate power. If the used water used is not efficiently cooled, but is released back into its original water source, it can threaten the aquatic life in the nearby lake or river.
DeleteI agree that nuclear power plants are doing the worse for the environment, and for the human race. A way to fix this is to improve how waste is disposed. If we could find a way to minimize the harmful substances that are a result of nuclear power plants, it all adds up.
DeleteI feel more informed on this topic, you were very descriptive on the cons of nuclear energy. One more issue involves nuclear reactors, The waste produced by nuclear reactors needs to be disposed off at a safe place since they are extremely hazardous and can leak radiations if not stored properly. Such kind of waste emits radiations from tens to hundreds of years. If not stored properly, this can be a huge issue. We can fix this by using different and safer types of renewable energy, like wind or solar energy.
DeleteVideo games have become so common in kids' lives today that many of us don't realize the dangers and risks that kids are taking. Since school takes up a major portion of a person's time, many people sacrifice their sleeping time for a couple extra hours of playing video games. Deprivation of sleep can lead to insomnia, and can ruin a person's health. Also, video games may cause a person to show unusual patterns of aggression. You could stop the risk and danger of these effects by limiting the amount of time you play video games everyday to a minimal amount. You could also find a hobby that you're interested in, to stop playing video games.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.symptomfind.com/health/video-game-addiction/
I totally agree with you Deputy Dirty#2. Another big problem that playing too many video games can cause is violence. If you are playing video games for three hours a day and not getting sleep; you might think it's okay to act very violent in real life. This could result in getting into fights, arrests and serious trouble. I think we all need to control how much time we spend playing video games.
DeleteI think people can reduce some of the dangers you talked about by being more responsible when playing video games. People can limit the amount of time they play every day, play video games that are rated for there age group and not play video games at least two hours before going to bed.
DeleteI agree that kids are playing way to much video games, and not being active anymore. I also agree that video games can lead to violence. Kids are thinking that since violence is okay on their screan it's okay in real life. I think that kids should be able to play video games but in moderation.
DeleteI agree that we should limit time with videogames. I also know that we could do something better and more active in the time we play videogames.
DeleteHoverboards are starting to catch on fire and blow up. The cause of hoverboards catching on fire is the lithium ion batteries. The liquid swimming around inside most lithium ion batteries are highly flammable. By July at least 60 hoverboards have caused fires totaling $2 million in property damage. Hoverboards have exploded while charging and others while riding. The companies just want money and released hoverboards to quick and didn't think about the dangers. The hoverboards can be made safe if they don't use lithium ion batteries and is tested before being released.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.cnet.com/news/why-are-hoverboards-exploding-and-catching-fire/
Kendall
DeleteI completely agree that the companies only doing what mankind has desired for 90 years or more just for the money. They didn't test it as much as they needed to to check if it was safe or not. The people who ride the hover boards while low on battery also have to have awareness because they are increasing the risk of them making the lithium batteries have to much of a negative charge which, over time, causes a chemical reaction that leads to an explosion. That was an amazing paragraph.
We, the people are looking for ways to make life so easy. Way too easy so we don't even have to walk! Companies out there just want their product to get big and popular and they will risk everything for profit. Even if it means the life of their customers. Lithium batteries should be replaced with something else and should be tested in every situation so it is claimed to be safe.
DeleteI like your paragraph Kendall. I think that another problem with hoverboards is that people can easily fall off of them without proper training. So many people have hoverboards and I think that alone results in a higher chance of falling and maybe even fracturing your bones.
DeleteI'm just as surprised as you Kendall. Why would you sell a product that could risk your life.
DeleteYou did an amazing job on your paragraph Kendall! Another problem is the safety of hoverboards. People could easily hurt themselves while riding them. I also agree that they should be tested before being put out in stores.
DeleteThere is a new technology we are advancing in today called A.I., Artificial Intelligence. We are attempting to give robots brains of their own that can function as well as ours. So far we have been able to give robots a mind with a limited knowledge and are now able to learn new things. I have come up with some solutions based off of knowledge I have received from my website. The solutions are: A. We have just come up with the idea of replicating a child's mind vs. an adult's mind. This would be he case for the purpose of teaching the child's mind how to talk, walk, and behave. Solution B. We have a backup plan for each robot, such as a self destruct option if the robot gets crazy and starts killing innocents. In conclusion giving robos intelligence that could allow them to function on their own with no limit to their power is a dangerous plan that we know not enough about.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.a-i.com/
Artificial intelligence could become a problem but i believe that self destruct would not be the best solution. If they do end up killing people it would be a lot safer if we install a manual shut down then dismantle them. Before it gets to that point we can make and sell devices that give the device a reboot or a memory wipe to prevent free thinking and rebellion.
DeleteA.I. poses a lot of benefits, but also a lot of drawbacks as well. If we use robots to replace our workforce, jobs will be lost and people won't have enough to provide for their families. I do agree with you about having a self destruct option, but I also think we should have qualified experts handle these tasks. They will take this topic seriously and, hopefully, not build a killing machine that could end up wiping out humanity. Great work!
DeleteFlynn, I am very impressed on how you explained how A.I. are very dangerous and I completely agree with you about that. One solution we can stop A.I. really overpowering the human kind is by organizing a special group that knows the A.I. completely well and can stop them immediately when needed.
DeleteFlynn, you are right when you say A.I. is dangerous. Another problem that A.I. can cause a lot of people to lose their jobs and they won't be able to take care of their family.
DeleteI kind of agree that A.I's are dangerous but there can be good things in A.I's too. Such as they can be parts of help and rescue teams around the world in case of natural disasters. They can use their intelligence to locate the missing people. A.I's could also potentially be used to go places that are too dangerous for normal humans to go. I see how A.I's could be dangerous but a solution to that is that there should be an override option for the creator of the A.I. to use in case the robot goes on a killing spree. I also think that the A.I. should only be taught only good things and it should also be hardwired into the A.I's memory. Great Job Flynn!!!
DeleteQuantum Computing is the technology promised to solve all of our problems, instantly. Or at least all of our math problems. But when Quantum Computers are created, all known forms of encryption will be cracked, instantly. Quantum Computers are able to solve problems instantly, because of the quantum mechanics concept superposition, but because of that Quantum Computers will be able to break any cipher by exhausting all possibilites and finding the right one. This would make all transactions and exchanges of information public, and you can think of the horrendous possibilities.
ReplyDeleteThere is only two possible safeguards:
To have all quantum computers managed by the government, or make an encryption so strong that even a quantum computer can't break it.
http://futurism.com/nsa-warns-dangers-quantum-computing/
Quantum computers could be very dangerous, as you stated in your paragraph. The dangers are numerous, but the solutions are few. If quantum computers were finished developing it could cause chaos, for people could use the computers for hacking in to personal accounts and steal vital information. This could also cause "hacking wars" were nations will try to steal military and private files. We could stop this disaster by stopping the development of the technology as a whole, or you could put international laws of limitations to make sure that the computers don't have the computing power to hack into government file and only used for scientific and peaceful purposes.
DeleteWow Gary, this is a very sophisticated paragraph. Although I am not extremely educated on the topic, I did some research and derived some possible dangers Quantum computers could cause. These computers can compromise security, allowing people who can access quantum computers a worldwide threat. A possible solution to this would be to put limitations on quantum computers themselves, such as having multiple parties make sure the other is not hacking with the computer. Also, I don't know if possible, but if there was a development that could create boundaries in the coding of the computer, as these boundaries would make it impossible for quantum computers to hack the highest levels of encryption.
DeleteAnother possible solution to the dangers of quantum computer hacking is to disconnect from the internet and keep hard drives independent from access via the web. This is a temporary solution that can be used until a newer technology is developed to keep valuable information safe.
DeleteI never knew that quantum computers could affect the world so much! I know that hacking into personal information is a major problem in our world, so I think we should keep these out of the public's hands, and have them mostly destroyed. This would limit hacking and stealing information.
DeleteThe Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has been recalled because of it's exploding battery. Apple and Samsung products are always in a race; each company tries to release it's new product first. When an Apple iPhone is released, a Samsung is sure to follow it; and vice-versa. Samsung's newest product-the Galaxy Note 7 was recalled because of the lithium ion battery packs used for their power. If the thin sheet of plastic that separates the sides of the battery gets punctured, the highly flammable liquid in the battery overheats and catches on fire; and can kill or severely hurt the people who own them. If both companies weren't racing each other, maybe they would be more careful and practical for the products they are using.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.cnet.com/news/why-is-samsung-galaxy-note-7-exploding-overheating/
I think another danger of phones too is the material they are made out of is not usually recyclable or reusable. I think it would help a lot for phone companies to make their products somewhat eco friendly to at least help our environment, not destroy it.
DeleteGreat paragraph Elina! I think a solution is to test the phone out before the company releases it. Also maybe put a warning label on the phone so people won't overuse it.
DeleteSome other dangers of phones is that many emit a form of radiation known as electromagnetic radiation. This can cause many brain tumours and different genetic damages. One solution to this could be to test the phones before actually releasing them or companies should find a solution to the electromagnetic waves being released. Great job Elina!
DeleteI completely agree with this problem. Companies definitely need to stop worrying about the money and be more concerned about whether the product is safe to the public or no. Then these kinds of things won't happen.
DeleteHave you ever been so exasperated that you felt your blood start to boil? If so, you may want to run from your cellular device before you get yourself into trouble, because, if “your messages are overemotional, demanding, and bordering on desperate, then you have most likely escalated to the cyber crime of stalking by texting.” The most common forms of stalking include making phone calls/sending texts, sending letters and spreading rumors about someone else. While this may not seem like such a crime, the maximum penalties include imprisonment for up to a year and/or a possible $1000.00 fine. Perhaps, to avoid this type of behavior, cell phones should measure one’s blood pressure before allowing a text to be sent or phone call to be made. While this could become possible in our day and age, for now, the biggest way to protect yourself from being accused of this is when feeling like your head is going to explode, you take a deep breath and back away from your digital device.
ReplyDeletehttp://sitafa.newsvine.com/_news/2009/01/13/2307170-stalking-by-texting-are-you-guilty?lite
Nice paragraph. I do agree with your stance on cyber stalking through text. Victims of cyber stalking [and cyber bullying] can develop social issues, including lack of self confidence. A possible way to prevent this problem is to possibly implement a device that filters out harassing texts, this way the texts that most likely been written out of anger won't come back to haunt the person later.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteOne solution is to have self-control and not send a text, etc. when emotional. Once you cool off, reread what was written and if you still feel the same way, then send it. You may also want to consider how the other person may miss read the message sent and react differently from what you intended, since communication is mostly through body language. This will help you avoid accidentally being part of this cyclical cyber stalking.
DeleteI think one other solution for this problem could be to scan a person's brain waves through electronic devices, and if something seems like it may go out of control, all personal devices within a person's reach will lock and they can unlock when the person is calmed down. This is one other way people can prevent themselves from making bad decisions.
DeleteYup I have to agree. A possible solution could be an app/add on to your mobile device that checks the message you send and gives you an alert if the message is inappropriate. This could help to stop rumors, but it still won't take the privilege of sending a text.
DeleteMr. kavanaugh I completely agree with your statement about how people using phones to stalk or harass people could and will cause some problems. I think a simple solution is a software that makes people wait like a half hour before sending a text that could have harmful content
