Think of a person you look up to or admire based on a value he/she has or had (the person doesn’t need to still be alive).  In one paragraph:

  • discuss the value (values listed in Reading section of L.A. Binder  on website) of the person that you look up to or admire, and
  • use details from the person’s life and/or experiences to demonstrate the existence of the value.

  1. My grandfather was diagnosed with skin cancer in the year of 2005. I was 1 ¾ years old at the time, so I really didn’t know what was going on. He had gone through so many treatments like surgery and radiation until the year of 2007. His last wishes were to go to his Florida home and pass away there because he knew it was coming closer. The doctors said he probably had about one more year. So he stretched his ‘’vacation’’ a little farther. The doctors were wrong; he passed away in October of 2007. He never made it to Florida, but he had never stopped trying to get to Florida. He booked tickets for all of us and rented a couple of cars. It was hard for my grandmother to cancel all that. My grandfather persevered through all of his treatments by staying positive.

  2. When we were younger and sang in our church’s kids-chorus, my younger sister Melody was told constantly to sing quieter and blend in with the other kids since they were very shy and quiet. However, as the years went on, she learned to sing very high and strong. So high that she can sometimes sing the notes in Ariana Grande songs that are almost whistle notes. In her chorus, her teacher lets students sing solos and Melody usually does a solo each time. When we are on car trips with her, we have her play whatever songs she wants and we all sing carpool karaoke. She has taught herself individuality in a world full of ‘clones’ and showed my why I need to be unique to succeed.

  3. Jim Kelly is a very resilient man. As a football player Jim was sacked 25 times and always got back up (a sack is being tackled with the ball). In football a quarterback (Jim’s position) is hit almost every time he throws the ball (he throws almost every play). Jim had intense resilience through this, he threw for 35467 yards and 237 touchdowns. Through this Jim went to 4 straight championships, and lost every single one. These failures can crush a normal man but Jim kept on. Jim married his good friend Jill and they had 3 kids, Camryn, Hunter, and Erin. Jim had an especially strong connection with his son, Hunter. Jim wanted to see his son grow up and play football with his Dad, even if Hunter didn’t play professionally. Sadly Jim’s son was diagnosed with Krabbe Leukodystrophy at a young age. Everyone kind of knew Hunter would never survive. In Jim’s Hall of Fame induction speech he said “the toughest person I've ever met in my life is my hero, my soldier, my son, Hunter”. Jim wanted to have his son see his induction, and he did. But Hunter’s luck eventually ran out, and he died. This should have crushed Jim, but it didn’t. Jim kept on raising his daughters and was making progress in his fight against Krabbe Leukodystrophy when cancer struck. Just like everything though, Jim kept going on. Jim is now cancer free and a big inspiration to me.

    1. James, the fact that Jim Kelly was a very loyal and determined father was a very important model to this society because of all the people who give less credit to their inspirations and all the people who helped them strive harder. Jim Kelly was a good model because even though he has gone through much pain, he continues to take care of what else is important that is left in this world.

  4. I have an acquaintance with this swimmer Shannon. She swims for a different team than me. I met her at a invitational meet at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology). I, of course know who she is and her name. She practically swam against me in all my events. She is also really fast. I think she is the fastest girl in our age group. Minutes before the event the 100 IM (where you swim a 25 yard for all the strokes in this order fly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle)
she asked me “Do you have a duck,?”
I replied back and said “no sadly,.”
She then said the next words I’d think I never hear from her or any other swimmer
“If I win I’ll give you the duck,.”
I couldn’t believe. I said back “Are you sure,?”
Shannon replies easily “Yeah, I gave all my ducks I won away last year,.”
Of course I agreed and said “okay,.”
When we went up to the blocks and swam the 100 IM she had won. She walked up to the box and waited for me and asked me what I want. I took one out of a box and hugged her and thanked her many times. Even though I still felt bad about it I said to myself if i get fast enough someday I’ll make it up to her. We then bid our goodbyes and go to our separate teams.
I would probably remember this day forever as she is kind enough to give me her duck. Even if we met 30 minutes ago.

(what i mean by ‘duck’ if u win the heat you are swimming you get to choose a rubber duck out of a box)

    1. Shannon seems like a very inspirational character. It's amazing how when she's one of the fastest swimmers it doesn't really seem to get into her head. I know lots of people that have the "I'm better than you attitude", and that doesn't really help anyone. She also seemed to help you in a way that she probably didn't even mean to. You said that if you get fast enough you could make it up to her. This shows that she inspired you to work harder in a positive way. Shannon seems like a person that's very worthy of admiration.

  5. Have you ever felt like you’ve lost everything? One of the people who I look up to most is my mother. She is so incredibly strong, and has hope through whatever she’s going through. In 2011, my mother was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I was younger then, and I didn’t completely understand what my mother was going through. She went through many rounds of intense chemotherapy. Many days, when I came home from school, I heard her crying. Even when she was depressed, she would still stay strong for our family, so we wouldn’t worry about her too much. As her hair fell out, she let my siblings and I cut her hair into ridiculous hairstyles to try and lighten the mood. She would always have a smile on her face, and would always be willing to play a game with us. My mom would have hope through all her chemo, through every radiation session, through every surgery. This year, six years after she had been declared cancer-free, she has again been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Even though she’ll have to go through all the treatments again, she has hope that no matter what, her life is in God’s hands.

  6. ` Olympian Gabby Douglas loves gymnastics, but getting up to olympic level wasn’t effortless. At a young age, Gabby left home to go practice at a better gym. She went and lived with a family that would take her to all of her practices and care about her. However, Gabby was having a hard time. She was homesick, and just couldn’t take all of the pressure anymore. So, she decided to quit, leaving the one sport she loved. Tormented, Gabby realized that she couldn’t live without gymnastics in her life, so she decided to go back into it. Eventually, with Gabby’s hard work, she got up to olympic level and she didn’t doubt herself, or have one single egocentric thought on her path to victory. Gabby was missing her real family, and she was getting frustrated about not getting the skills she needed. All of these factors piled on, and it was just getting really hard for her to keep on going. Gabby pushed through hard times so she could keep doing what she loves, and that takes a lot of perseverance.

I believe that Ricegum has some serious dedication to YouTube because he has been through some serious road blocks like other YouTubers making fun of him, or the loss of friends or family. Through all of those issues, he still manages to make entertaining videos for the 9 million people what watches his videos. He also lives with OTHER YouTubers so he can make better videos with them! In every one of his videos I chuckle a little bit inside my head or outside, his videos never disappoint me, as a matter of fact I think the reason why I started a YouTube channel is because of him...

Have you ever thought you deserved something more than another? A person I admire is Rafael Nadal. He's the Number one ranked tennis player in the world. His discontent to what he has already accomplished inspires me to push myself to be the best I can be. Despite the boisterous crowds he face, he always keeps a tranquil yet avid personality. She had went through lung surgery and now has a tube that collects fluid build-up in her lungs. For a while, my grandmother has been getting treatment at home. Nurses would come to empty the fluid every month. During Winter, 2016, she broke her leg when walking outside after a snowstorm. In 2017, the cast was removed. For months she has had stage four lung cancer. As of January 1st, 2018, she was rushed to the hospital for her irregular breathing. 10. Would life be enjoyable without someone that deeply cared for you? For some, their supporters have arisen only recently. Throughout his presidency, former-President Barack Obama has led stances to help the disabled, undocumented immigrants, and the LGBT community. One of his most notable actions is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This program embedded 650,000 immigrants into the American society. A significant and recent event was the legalization of same-sex marriage by the Supreme Court in the Obergefell v. Hodges case. Similarly, the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in the US Military was phased out. Although this change is certainly significant in the US Military, his increase of the employment of the of the disabled into the federal government can be described as a step in the right direction. Protecting the members of the community that are the most vulnerable and ones that were taken advantage of was an important goal of Obama's presidency, especially when almost no one else was looking out for them. Without respect, no one would be where they are.

  11. My grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in November of 2012 when she was only 65 years old. Alzheimer’s causes changes in the brain that decrease short term memory and increase memory loss and loss of other basic mental abilities. She has a hard time remembering faces and names and now finds it hard to recall me and my brother Mason. From her memories, she knows who we are but can not remember what our names are. My grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle and cousins came over for Thanksgiving and she had a hard time. We played games all together and she got frustrated with herself because she knew she used to know how to play. And that's the hard part: she knows that she can’t remember like she used to be able to. But she still perseveres and tries to stay in the moment and work through it.

    1. Perseverance is a characteristic that is critical to our society today, where many people are battling difficult situations like illnesses and poverty. Perseverance is the strength to move on, to find hope where there seems to be none; persevering through a tough situation will usually give you the strength to move on and maybe lead you to a better situation. People in our society have to learn to keep hoping and pushing through their pain, so they can possibly overcome their barriers and achieve their goals despite the obstacles that barred them. Your grandmother is admirable because she doesn't let her memory struggles keep her from doing well in life.

  12. I’m just a kid. There are many people I look up to and admire. The person I have to admire most though is my dance teacher Lori Leonardi. She has been teaching me my tap solo and duet with my friend Maddie for 8 years and she helps me so much. She shows great dedication with everything she does and even though she changes dances (which gets annoying) many times she makes sure it is the best she can do. She does it because she loves us. She always wants us to win and she will help me in any way possible to make that happen. She goes out of her way to hold extra rehearsals or keeps us even later at night when she wants to go home so that we can continue to progress. To me this shows great dedication and leadership and someday when I have a job I want to love it as much as she loves hers.

  13. One of the people who I love dearly and don't nearly appreciate enough is my grandmother. She has showed incredible perseverance and resilience throughout her life. Perseverance means to keep pushing through tough times, and resilience is the ability to recover quickly from any problems that pop up along the road to success. My grandmother grew up on a farm in Southern Illinois, right after the Great Depression. She had nine brothers and one sister, and her family struggled, just like every farming family in that time period. As the oldest daughter, she had to do lots of house chores and learn how to help out around the farm. However, she went into training to become a nurse. With this new knowledge, she moved to Chicago, far away from home. Soon after, she gave up her practice to start a family, and stay home with her four children. Her husband was stubborn, and she worked through a one-sided marriage for 50 years. About four years ago, her spouse became bedridden, and she was his sole caretaker until his recent death. During those 50 years, she never left the city, because there was always work to do. Through all of this, she remained determined to reach her next goal. She persevered through training, and remained resilient through her tough marriage and home life by remembering good things must come, even if they take forever to get here.

I couldn’t believe that it had happened to my mom of all people. She had to go through about a year and a half of repeated surgery and therapy. Whenever I went to sleep, the thought that she could be gone the next day haunted me. The chemotherapy took a toll on her. She was often tired or depressed, but she always reassured us. We knew that she was going through hard times, but she fought through. She still goes on check-ups every few months, but she has greatly improved. Millie was born in Spain in 2004, but then moved to England with her family when she was two. She grew up in England, and even developed an English accent! However, she learned that she was actually deaf in her left ear. Did that stop her? No! Instead of letting that define who she was, Millie went on to audition for Stranger Things when she was only eleven years old, and got one of the biggest parts without even a single acting or singing lesson! (In case you were wondering, she got the part of Eleven, a small girl who has strong telekinesis.) Stranger Things takes place in Hawkins, Indiana, and Millie has a brilliant American accent! Not only that, she can perfectly rap Nicki Minaj’s “Monster.” Because of her amazing talents and determination to be the best she can be, Millie Bobby Brown won the Best Actress award at only age twelve. From getting her dream job to buying a house to learning to drive, she did that all while having no one close but me. When I was 4 years old my parents got divorced. She enrolled me in dance, swimming a karate classes at the age of 5. So when I went to my activities, she went to school. She was always there for me she me up from school, dropped me off and brought me to my activities. We moved here to Albany because all my mom's older brother lives here and now all her brothers live here. Also because the schools are better here and she wants a good future for me. 24. I was named after my great grandfather with good reason. He was an American man living in Poland with his wife and my grandfather. When WWII broke out, he planned to take them to America with him, but he could not get the money so he went to America himself to work. Since there was no communication overseas save for letters (which couldn’t really be sent in Nazi-occupied Poland), Alexander had no idea whether his wife and son were dead or alive. For 12 years he worked to bring them to the US, hopeful that they were still alive. Finally, his perseverance paid off and he smuggled his now enslaved family into the US, and my grandfather finally got to meet his father he had not seen in 12 years. Many people would’ve given up and started a new life if they were unsure if their family was alive or not, but my great grandfather held hope and stayed faithful to his family, and eventually saved their lives.

  27. I admire my dad because he is a meteoroligist and finds out what a person has in the ir body or what they hurt or something that is bad that's in their body. This is why I admire my dad for what he does.

    1. These kind of people are very important in our society. I think this because your father determines what is wrong with someone's body. And if we did not have people like him then we may never know what or is wrong with you body.
