In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.”  As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly.   In one paragraph:

  • describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
  • offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
  • at the end, paste the url of a website from which you  did some reading about the dangers of using the  technology.

  1. One type of technology that we use with out considering the dangers is watching the news. The news can say things that aren't true at all and then we go and believe it. one thing we can do is do more research on the topic when we see it on the news. Another thing we can do is ask are self is it true, and some times its not.

    1. I do partly agree with you. Yes we should research but not so much it intrudes on our daily activities. for if we actually go in deep research it will take up to much time. I propose a different solution that's within the lines. Only research a little into it if your really care about it.

    2. I think your suggested solution will work if people go deep into research. People could also instead of getting their news from tv they could read it from several different places.Like you said research it deeper and make sure the news is true.

    3. Right. Some news is fake, especially when one news channel is on one side and another news channel is on the other side. Another recommendation that might help is to not watch biased news channels unless you are checking if they are biased,

      Delete
    4. I think that solution will work because people has to believe if what they are researching is true.

    5. I agree that watching the news could be dangerous, but I also think it's very important to know what's going on in our society. I think we should educate the people in our world to think for themselves so we can all determine what news is true.

    6. Tyler genett, I do kind of agree with you that we should not let researching about a topic take over are life, but sometimes the get the truth about what really happened you have to do a lot research on the topic.

    7. Mariana Cuevas-Ruiz, I do agree with you that we should not just watch the new, and instead read multiple articles about the topic.

  2. A technology from today that we use without considering the dangers of is a cell phone. A cell phone is dangerous because when people text while they are driving, that can lead to countless car accidents, injuries, and deaths. Cell phones also produce radiation that can form some types of cancer. Kids may be most vulnerable to the radiation damage. We can use cell phones more carefully by putting them on silent while people are driving, and possibly talk on speakerphone or with earbuds in so the radiation is further away from your brain. url: http://www.newsmax.com/Health/Health-News/cell-phone-danger/2017/04/06/id/782931/

    1. I think your first solution was good. The one about putting your phones on silent while people are driving. But the other one about talking on speakerphone it could distract the driver still because they would be talking and not paying attention to the road. They can put it on the driving mode. So when they drive the can not get text or calls.

      Delete
    2. It is a good idea to put on silent. the idea of earbuds is sending the messages right to there brain shoving away some of the important attention aspects. But you could also just shut down the phone because it is of only harm when driving.

    3. I think cellphones are a huge problem in today's society. I agree with your radiation solution. I think for driving cellphones should detect high speeds and turn off.

      Delete
    4. I agree that making attempts to silence your phone while driving and decreasing radiation could be effective, but I think that something to consider is relying less on our technology and wasting less time on our phones.

      Delete
    5. Yeah... NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!!! Also if your phone has the hands free mode, use it to activate calls on speaker or don't even use it.

  3. Fake news is bad because people see something on the internet about someone dying or about something else that is fake news they will tell their friend and then their friend will tell another friend and then it will be a huge rumor going around everywhere. It is also bad because when someone posts on twitter about how Stacey now has ANOTHER boyfriend and she doesn't and now everyone thinks that she has everyone at the school. Now she is getting picked on at school by everyone and it is all because someone just spread one little rumor . A suggestion we could use to stop fake news is knowing facts before posting online or just not do it at all because on social media anyone can see what you have posted.

    3. I do think the solution that you brought up is smart and makes sense. I feel the only way it will work is if everyone is on board and will actually do it. What you said is something everyone should try to do.

    4. I agree with your idea to stop fake news but I feel that won't stop it fully it will just minimize it for a short period of time.

    5. I think that your first suggestion would not work because people now are to lazy to take the time to research what they are told on the news.People could watch other news channels to figure out if something is fake or not.

      Delete
    6. Kenny, I do think this will work but as dancer river said everybody would have to be on board. When fake news is posted you could report it and it would get taken down. But instagram, twitter, and facebook and all of the social media sites would have to be on board. But I really think that this could work because other things like this have been done like bullying.

  4. Text neck is the term used to describe the neck pain and damage to the spine from looking at your phone. Some of the symptoms of text neck are that you get shoulder pain or tightness in your shoulders. The pain of that in your shoulders could cause bad muscle spasms. A way that we could stop it is that we shouldn’t keep looking at are phone when we are walking. If you do, then you should only do it for a little bit. It could damage your spine and neck for the rest of your life. The url I used is https://www.spine-health.com/blog/modern-spine-ailment-text-neck .

    1. I agree with your solution because people will reduce the chance of having text neck but I think people should not look down at their phone at all while their walking or doing something so they have no chance of getting text neck when some people still have a chance at getting it.

      Delete
    2. I agree because people spend too much time on their phones and looking down on them that it causes text neck and It doesn't only happen when walking it could happen during sitting also.

    3. I agree that people shouldn't be on there phones while they are walking. That way they can see where they are going and not run into people. We could also hold our phones more up so were not looking down.

    4. These solutions are good, but people will still walk with there phone in there hand. We need to make a bigger deal out of these things like bringing it out more to the media and showing the harsh results to this.

      Delete
    5. The solution is good but it should be further into it like dont use at all when your mobile because it's really not that important

  5. In 2015/2016 hoverboards/segways were made. They were a big thing, they still are just not as big, but tons of people still use them.People use them to go everywhere. like the mall, the grocery store, basically everywhere they go. I say this type of technology isn't good for us because people ride these everywhere they go and it's making us more lazy. I'm not saying that use can't ride them it's just that we shouldn't be riding there whenever you go to the mall or the grocery store or on campus and other places people usually go. Especially the mall, I know that the mall is big,but you shouldn't be that lazy to just go to the mall.

    1. True I never really understood the meaning of those. Instead of hoverboard they should have called it the lazy maker 6000. Some places should have some restriction but not all.

    2. I agree with you that segways don't need to be taken everywhere you go. I would have disagree with riding it to the mall though because if you are far away ish and you don't walk for long periods of time then your stuck. and besides you already are getting a lot of exercise from walking around in the mall and it is tiring for some people.

    4. I agree with your claim that segways should not be taken everywhere and that it isn't healthy for people to do it. There could be rules put in at certain places that you can't use them like at malls or at certain stores. This would make it so people would be forced to walk and exercise instead of being able to ride on something everywhere they go.

    5. Tyler when you talk about some places have some restrictions but not all what do you mean by that. They should have restrictions but hoverboards should just be for fun.And people shouldn't really ride around everywhere they go.And people should get some exercise.

  6. In schools today, computer use is strictly limited to school work. Anything else is filtered out. This is not the case at home. Teenagers and children have access to online chat rooms, which are extremely dangerous. Anyone can enter these chat rooms without using their real name, age, or gender. Even though the chat rooms are supervised, you can have private conversations with people inside the chat rooms, and this is where paedophiles have a chance to ask children and teenagers for their location, age, and anything else that they want to know. We could stop this problem by limiting computer access to strictly school work or other parent approved programs. Also, chat room supervisors should be able to supervise private conversations. https://www.theguardian.com/education/2001/mar/20/itforschools.schools5

    1. True. If people in private chat rooms are supervised, people won't get other people's private information. Another suggestion I'd advise is not going to private chat rooms or regular chat itself and if you get a message on a console like an Xbox or a Playstation, and it asks your age, lie and say you are like 21 years or older so they just move on to another person.

      Delete
    2. The solution for the computer to by limiting computer access to school work is good. Another way could be that you have to be 18 or older to be able to join a chat room. Since you are older you might be more responsible.

    3. I think your solutions of tighter regulations will work to some extent, and make sure kids will be safer online. I think parents are an important roll in their children's safety on the computer, and if they aren't involved, normally the child can get away with a lot. So I think the idea of the game or system itself restricting, and blocking certain sites, is a good solution no matter who the user is. Nice Job!

      Delete
    4. I agree that this is a big proplem with the internet today and I also agree that supervisors should be ably to moniter private conversations.

    5. Ireland, I agree that age restrictions would have been helpful, but then again it is very easy to lie about your age. Kevin, lying about your age wouldn't necessarily work. It really depends on how you act online and who you interact with. Jessica, I agree that parents should set restrictions for their children's interactions online.

  7. Technology can be very useful but it can also be dangerous. Like it said in waters of babylon"perhaps in the old days people ate up technology two fast" and here are some examples. Most obviously phones are sucking us in with their greasy mitts cause whenever a new phone comes out everyone's on it even though they really only get bigger and plus there are still the risks of things like radiation and spinal problems because you're always bent over bending/hurting your spine and eyes. But there is a big but effective way to fix this don't get suckerd in by new phones and don't use it as frequently. These two small things fix these big problems.

  8. Technology can be dangerous. It can be dangers because as you are on your phone your attention span can decrease. When you are on your electronics you can click out of things but in real life you can't just click out of a situation you don't want to be in, you have to stay and deal with it. It could also lead to many injuries, deaths and accidents. Radiation from your cell phone can have a major issue for children. Radiation can give children a greater chance of Leukemia. You should talk to your kids about the dangers of cell phones and how to prevent your children from these dangers. URL:

  9. Our phones are not only adictive but they are also dangerous. We need to put a stop in motion. The more powerful it becomes, the more helpful and harmful it can be. We get so distracted with our phones we can't see what is right in front of us and many fail to inform themselves about current events and news. To be more careful we should limit the amount of screentime we have.

  10. Even though a lot of people have phones in the world, it doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. Phone area can be and are very dangerous. Phones are used all day every day even when they aren't suppose to be used. For example, texting and driving. Everyone knows that they aren't suppose to do it and understand the risks, yet about 98 percent still do it. Most people text and drive because they worry they might miss something important, some think that texting while they drive does not affect their driving, and others can't help it because they are addicted. I think that people should just shut down their phone, so if they get a text, call or notification, they aren't tempted to look at there phone.

    2. I think that the solution you suggested won't work on some people because some people won't want to shut down their phones. Some people are too addicted to them and they won't want to turn them off for however long they are driving for. I think the government should make cars that auto shuts off the drivers phone and doesn't let them unlock it until the car shuts down. Then drivers won't be able to use their phone while driving.

      Delete
    3. Jada. I agree with what your saying as to shutting down phones, and I liked your writing. I think we could help people understand better as to how unsafe texting and driving can be. we could also find ways to make phones more safe for driving. as in making modes were the phone can't receive notifications, after all we are only human.

      Delete
    4. Hey sierra. I kind of disagree with cars that don't allow your phone to get notifications or calls. I think that if the car is going to shut your phone down or not allow you to use it, it should be able to read text to you and talk into the car to reply. Same thing with phone calls. When someone is calling you the car should be able to tell who is calling and allow you to accept or decline the call. In some ways you do need your phone in the car in case of an emergency and you need to get a hold of someone and if someone needs to get a hold of you for some reason.

  11. I think that us, the people in the world, use our phones and other mobile devices way too much and that has affected the people of this world in a negative sense. Technology is bad for us because it can become addicting which leads to a lot of side effects such as shortage of sleep, unable to socialize and getting virtually bullied. Also technology can be a scary thing for all the the things it does to a persons body physically. It can cause you to have headaches, necks pains and tendonitis (blackberry/ Iphone thumb). I think that the only ways that we can fix this are either sabatoge our mobile phone and cut the battery life and storage or we simply use our phones for they were intended to do which is calling, texting, and maybe taking pictures. 12. In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” One technology that we are using to fast is virtual reality goggles. Virtual reality goggles could be harmful and stressful to the human body. For some people it causes stress and anxiety after wearing this headset for more than a few minutes. It can also cause motion sickness, nausea and a severe eyestrain. It can cause physical harm other than eyestrain like not being able to see around you. To possibly fix this issue you could either limit your time or not wear them at all. You could sit down and stay in one place while using this form of technology for a short amount of time to decrease the risk of harming yourself.

Cell phones do not actually have enough energy to damage DNA or to heat body tissues. Also when posting certain things it can affect a lot of future jobs and other people since it does stay up there forever. We can start being more careful using cell phones by watching what we post online for the whole wide world to see. And Also by maybe turning your phone off more often and giving your eyes a break after a while.

    5. That is a nice solution. My only question is how, because when a phone is released (android/IOS) the company isn't going to fix a issue with the phone, instead, they are going to probably make a new phone model of the old phone, like apple creating new versions of the iPhones which everyone seems to think is better than ever.
