In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.”  As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly.   In one paragraph:

  • describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
  • offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
  • at the end, paste the url of a website from which you  did some reading about the dangers of using the  technology.

As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly. This is still an issue today. Social media is a big part of most lives. People create many accounts and sometimes talk to many unknown people. This is very dangerous. The minute you send a picture or give out personal information, it's on the Internet forever. People can hurt you or worse when personal info is given out. I think this is an easy fix. Just stop giving out any personal info, avoid meeting strangers and problem solved! You can make accounts private and avoid strangers. People will stay much safer when using today's technology. https://internetsafety101.org/snsdangers

    1. Dear HannahKay,
I loved your comment but I don't think your solution because some people want to communicate with their friends a lot. I think by lowering the charge of phones, computers, and laptops. People will use technology less than they used too.

    2. I agree with your suggested solutions. If people stop giving out personal information and just being careful with who you meet on the internet you can prevent many bad things from happening.

    3. Hannah, I think the solution you stated will work because not giving personal information and avoiding strangers helps protect ourselves. Another solution can be having parents being more active and aware of what their kids are doing and limiting the amount of time on technology as well.

Michaela, I think your solution is a great idea. I agree that parents should be more aware and alert of what's going on online.
Elizabeth, you're right. Computers should do a background check, but that may be difficult to do one on all the people online.

  2. In the story "By the Waters of Babylon" by Stephen Vincent Benet, the main character John says,"Perhaps in the old days they ate knowledge too fast". We learned that Stephen Vincent Benet wanted to address the problems of technology and how we are developing technology to fast. Although this story was published in 1937, we still have issues with tech today. With all these new smart phones and devices being released we are putting our health in danger without even knowing it. Just the overuse of smartphones are ruining our health. Phones can mess with our hearing, get an addiction to it, get neck pain from looking down at it, poor sleep quality and much more. Ways we can prevent this is to not listen to music at such a loud volume, stretch out your neck constantly and to not look down as much. You can also limit your time on your phone to prevent being attached or addicted. And then too not have it near you when trying to sleep. The bright lights from the phone will make you stay up longer than if you were to drink coffee. So it's best to not have it near our bed when trying to sleep. These ideas can help with your health as you get older and you mind as well start being healthier now because new phones are gonna keep coming out. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/27/cell-phone-health-iphone_n_3943322.html

    1. Good job! I think the many solutions to technology issues you suggested will work. Some of the solutions you suggested were to not have your phone near you at night, listen to music at a low volume, and stretch out your neck, and this would help to limit time on phones, eliminate hearing damage, and prevent neck problems, which are all problems that are very likely to happen and good solutions to those problems. Another solution I think would be helpful is to keep the brightness on technology down to limit and prevent eye damage.

    2. I think your solutions that you put is going to work. Especially when you said to not listen to music on a high volume and to not have you phone near you. I say this because it will be more likely to have people look down at their phones all the time which will reduce the amount of neck pain people have and less hearing problems with the listening to music too loud.

  3. One technology that countries develop and use today is nuclear power. It may come in a variety of forms, like nuclear power plants or nuclear weapons, but we should stop and consider the dangers of it. Even though the thought of being able to produce tons of energy for cheap may be appealing there are other things we should consider. Nukes and Nuclear power plants are prone to terrorist attacks and meltdowns which lead to devastating consequences. It will hurt people in the explosion and it will leave radiation for years to come, stopping any future plans of building in the area for a long time. Ukes leave similar effects as well. We simply can not be sure we can prevent these disasters and dangers of nuclear power plants and nukes. This is why I propose instead of continuing to develop nuclear weapons we should drop these and continue to develop clean energy and regular weapons. Nukes and nuclear power plants are simply not an option. they aren't safe for the environment, anyone or anything. A bright future is one without nukes. http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/global-warming/issues/nuclear/

    1. I agree with what you said, that nuclear power could be extremely dangerous. It has so many consequences that could be harmful to our earth. However, I also believe that it is an extremely valuable resource that we could use. We need to be extremely careful with it, taking many precautions and making sure the safety of humans is more important than anything.

    3. Melody, I agree with what you say, but I'm still hesitant on whether it's good enough to consider to use. I believe the only way we can safely ensure the use of nuclear power is to understand physics more. We have to truly understand something before we can use it.

    4. Ian, nuclear power is extremely dangerous, I for one would pass a law making every single nuke in the world be destroyed because the safety of the plant and it's inhabitants are more important than some pesky feud over some stupid incident. We can still go to war but preferably minus nukes.

    5. I agree with you.

    6. Mariana I'm glad that you agree with my stance on nuclear power in general. I agree that by switching we could prevent "many bad things from happening"

      Delete
    7. Elizabeth, I feel your stance on nuclear power might be a little extreme. Nuclear power could still be used in my opinion, but extensive research should be done first. Your solution could also pose problems such as "destroying" the nukes in the first place. It's really difficult to just "destroy" nukes. There needs to be another solution, rather than "destroying" the nukes.

  4. Stephen Vincent Benet wanted people to think about the dangers of devolving and utilizing technology too quickly with this line in his story, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” Take the internet for example. It hasn't been around that long, and yet it already plays a tremendous role in our lives. It's our source of entertainment, information, communication, etc. We depend on the internet for a great deal, so we're obviously going to listen when it suggests something, whether or not we know it. For perfect a example of this, just open up a new tab. Google is one of our top sources of information, and it would like to keep it that way. To do so, there will almost always be both a negative and positive article on the first page of results when a topic of relevant controversy is searched. That way, Google appears unbiased and trustworthy. However, one view will many times be represented before or more often than the other view on the first page. That way, you are more inclined to side with that view, unless you already have a strong opinion on the topic. YouTube does a similar system with its videos, however they can delete any video on the site at will, giving them power over who can speak and what news you watch. All major sources of information on the internet have this power. This is extremely dangerous to us, because if the higher ups at Google, YouTube, Facebook, or any other major source of information on the internet, decide one day that they will say what you will believe, what you see, who you listen to, they can. Whether or not they will depends on whether or not we continue to eat knowledge too fast. https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/04/digital-gerrymandering-and-the-dangerous-influence.html

While it is true that some sites remain largely unbiased, they are overshadowed by the huge corporate sites. We need stronger regulations on the internet so that unbiased sites, like the ones you described, become mmore common.

  5. I think that cell phones can be bad for people. People use cell phones all the time, thinking that theyŕe helpful. For example, people use cell phones to navigate, research, find answers, and contact people. Researchers and scientists believe that cell phones have a bacteria that can make you sick. They also believe that there´s a radiation that comes off of cell phones and can cause cancer. One way I think people can reduce this is go outside more and do activities instead of being lazy and playing on your phone. A second way I think people can reduce this is they can watch how much time they are spending on their cell phone and do something else when the time is up. Therefore, that is how cell phones can be dangerous and how we can keep those dangers fro happening. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wellnessNews/story?id=7017768&page=1

Or make phones have an automatic timer that makes you get off after a certain amount of time (except of course for emergencies).

  7. In "By the Waters of Babylon",John's dialogue says "Perhaps in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast." Writer Stephen Vincent Benet aimed to express his fears for the future, about how the society overwhelm themselves by the technology of today and containing too much power to handle by these creations. Robotic technology is one possible epitome of Benet's fears. As interesting and highly advanced robots are, it is one of the technology that we do not think thoroughly enough. Robots are now taking over jobs like drivers, cashiers, teachers, jobs in the medical field, business field and many more. However, we can't fully blame these automations, for they are much more affordable and practical for business owners.Owners are reassured that the tasks are done. Experts also theorize of the "Gray Goo Scenario", in which the Earth in the future would compose of more "assemblers. Assemblers are creations of nanotechnology that are predicted to consume all life forms and turning organic matter into mare assemblers. In shorter words, the invasion of robots is coming from science fiction to life. There was also a recent news that states "God is a bot" which was addressed by Anthony Levandowski, a self driving car engineer. We can use robots more carefully by educating ourselves about them. Robots are on the way to living with the human world, so it is important to know how they function, so when things go beyond the line, we can easily control them. Second, develop a healthy relationship with other people like your family, friends, your boss and many more, because humans and relationships are irreplaceable. Socialization is one thing humans will always be better at than robots. Homosapiens are social creatures with feelings and emotions, unlike robots. Another advise is control. It is factual that robots have Artificial Intelligence, but robots will always fail with control. At anytime, they can break or malfunction. The human brain is able to balance their emotions and actions, unlike man-made technology. Robots may be highly advanced, but we should remember that our minds are the most intelligent creations in the living planet.

    1. I agree, making what was previously unknown to you more familiar is extremely important, especially with technology. It is taking over our lives, like you mentioned, and I think that with enough knowledge of robots we can know how to be careful and control them better. Being around your family is also important, as we sometimes use our cell phones too much and tend to ignore the people around us. Another solution could be to limit your technology use throughout the day, so you don't let technology take over your life completely.

    2. Good job! I agree with your stance that us humans should prepare for the oncoming onslaught of automation in the workforce. Many jobs like trucking, which employ over three million people, are currently under threat from increasing automation and observation. However, not all jobs are at risk. Jobs like nursing, teaching, and other tasks involving human interaction are probably safe from automation. I also agree with you that AI may become uncontrollable if we let AI develop further. Entrepreneurs like Elon Musk are concerned with the progression of AI research for military and commercial applications. Countries like Russia and China, who are our America's adversaries, have already outpaced the Pentagon on AI research and development. An AI arms-race similar to the Cold War is now brewing. Another possible solution is to pass a resolution at the UN to permanently end AI research around the world. Although Russia, China, and other nuclear states have veto power in the Security Council, trying might be still worth it to prevent the outbreak of war. A solution to the first solution you proposed is that although automation is coming, humans should be ready to take new jobs in an increasingly electronic society.

      Delete
    3. I agree on solving the problem by letting humans take over new jobs in such a highly electronic society and there are still available jobs that robotic technology cannot do better than humans. However, I do think that the research and progression on AI should not completely and permanently end. As long as the control and awareness of the researchers and developers are present, then there should be no problem. Perhaps there should also be analysts that can predict the effects of the AI that is now known today. Overall, very sophisticated solutions, Michael.

    5. Molly, I agree with you about how we should limit ourselves from the use of technology. To add to your solution, maybe we can learn to explore more on the outside world of technology like maybe trying a new sport or hobby, as this will keep us from too much exposure to technology. This might also increase the chance of learning new talents and interests that we may never know we had.

  8. In this day and age, the world is constantly building new technologies and innovations, advancing at a faster rate than ever before. But are we stopping to consider the possible dangers that come with these new technologies? One example is social media. Social media has become a huge part of our everyday lives, characterizing many of our experiences and interactions with others. It has made us desire even more strongly validation from others, made us compare each other, and has shifted our attentions to trivial things such as our image online, and how many likes we get. We have become dependent on social media, while forgetting the danger of it that lies beneath the surface. Anybody can post anything, and if you aren't careful you could interact with potentially dangerous strangers in negative ways. Cyberbullying is a problem, and social media is filled with unhealthy content that so many young people now have access to. Many people are aware of these dangers but either ignore them or simply aren't that careful about it. I think that everyone could be more careful on social media about what is exposed to you and what you post and/or say. Especially the younger users, who should be even more aware of the dangers on social media. Social media can be positive or negative, so we should do our best to keep our experiences and the experiences of others on the positive side.

I think that if we promote face to face interactions and teach people the importance of talking to others in the physical realm, then the potential dangers of social media can be prevented.

  9. Every story has two perspectives, so does technology. There are many varied technologies that we utilize daily in our world. Many of them are right at our fingertips. But there are some pieces of technology we use without considering the dangers of them. One piece of technology used everyday are cars. Cars are used all the time for convenient transportation. But, there are many different ways you can get injured from using cars. Many people get hurt everyday from car accidents. Car crashes can be fatal or seriously injure you. Even the airbags which are supposed to protect you could sometimes cause injury. that are used for protection can injure you. There are several ways to prevent accidents involving cars. One way is being aware of your surroundings. Always make sure you pay attention to everything happening around you as well as in front of you. Also, be mindful of your blind spots as well as others' blind spots. If you can not see them, they can not see you. Another way to be safe while driving is to be careful of "Red Light Runners." As the traffic light turns green in front of you, wait a few seconds before going. Some people might run through red lights. Another way to be safe while driving is not to get distracted. There are many different pieces of technology that can distract you very easily while driving. Not only that, but also, other people in the car can distract you, which may lead to accidents. Cars are very useful in life, but we also need to be cautious while using them. http://www.ehstoday.com/news/ehs_imp_34458

  10. In the story “ By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet, they main character John says “perhaps in the old days the ate knowledge too fast” In this story the “knowledge” that was being explored was the technology of nuclear weapons, which ultimately destroyed the earth. But this line can apply to technology we are developing right now. For example texting while driving has caused too many injuries and deaths when it can easily be avoided. About 660,000 drivers attempt to use their phones while driving, and poor civilians are taking the consequences. According to the National Safety Council, due to using cellphone while driving 1.6 million deaths occur each year. While phones help us stay connected with the rest of the world, any time and anywhere, when driving, phones should not be a distraction and allow so many innocent people to get hurt. A solution to stop using our phones in the car, can be simply informing people. If people know how many people are injured by drivers who are using phones the might be more aware and know to keep their phone away from them when the drive.

Also I think that informing people about how bad this problem will reduce that amount of people who text and drive.I think this because a lot of times it is uneducated teens who are texting and driving, if they just knew how much danger they are putting themselves and the people around them, they will become scared to drive and be on their phones.Another solution could be puttting out more police to look for people looking at their phones while driving. This will make people more scared to take a look at their phones. Over all great job Jessica.

    2. Thanks! I think your addition to the solution, of more police looking for people on their phones is a great solution that will also help keep people off their phones, because even if they are sure they will never hit someone, they cant tell for sure. The technology they are talking about is nuclear power. But it still does happen today. We use our technology way too fast such as social media and just the internet in general. People post stuff without think of the outcome and what harm it could cause. Also when you post private information or pictures they are out there and you can't ever change that. The final thing is meeting up with random people who can cause harm to you. You never know who you are actually talking to, their actually age and gender. You never know what they have planned or if they have any weapons. But how do you solve this? Well its all on you. You have to think twice before you hit send or post. Also think before hitting accept on a strangers follow request and think before agreeing to meet up with them.

  12. In "By the Waters of Babylon," John says, "Perhaps in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast." Stephen Vincent Benet was trying to get the message across that people are making technology too dangerous. For example, some people use cell phones without without considering how dangerous it could be to use it. Like you could have some very dangerous information on your phone, and set a passcode. If the passcode gets put in wrong too many times, the phone's data resets and the information is gone. We could use the phone more carefully by not putting a passcodes on our phones. We could also have certain blocks on info we shouldn't have so we can't access it. Another thing is that using phones can give us cancer by the radiations. We could stop this by just using our phone less. There are many reasons why using our phone is dangerous, and these were just some of them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Interesting solution, Kevin! I disagree with your solution that we should not have pass-codes to prevent having "very dangerous information." A problem would be enforcing such law or action across the country. States like California have the clause "All people are by nature free and independent and have inalienable rights. Among these are ... privacy." Enforcing such law in California would violate the state constitution. You also mention that phones may give out harmful radiation that could be carcinogenic. The current scientific consensus is that phone radiation cannot cause cancer due to the type of radiation that is emitted. However, I agree with your stance that phone use should be limited, but for different reasons. Instead, I propose that phone manufactures be more vocal about their radio-frequency (RF) radiation emissions and increasing funding for the Department of Justice, of which includes the FBI. This way, consumers can understand the potential implications of RF radiation while the FBI and other law enforcement agencies can capture and discipline criminals without needing to access an encrypted mobile device. Otherwise, great job!

      Delete
    2. I like how much you put into this comment Michael. However, I never stated that we shouldn't have pass-codes. I merely said that there shouldn't be a function where the phone's data can reset if the pass-code is put in wrong. I do agree with one of your proposed solutions though. I do think that if there is increased funding for the Department of Justice, than
that way the FBI and other law enforcement agencies can catch criminals without needing the info on the phone.

  13. In, " By The Waters Of Babylon, " John says, " Perhaps in the olden days they are knoledge to fast." Stephen Vincent Benet wanted us as readers to interpret how much technology has changed our lives and made our society more indivual than social. One example I have is when you look at today's society how many people are tuned into there video games, computers, and phones that they arnt socializing face to face. Teenagers have significantly fewer face to face interactions. A second example is technology is moving so fast in today's world that we have the ability to destroy many people quickly because of how technologically advanced and powerful it has become. Many people have been exposed to the internet and many people constantly see models on the internet and it reminds you of how flawed you are and this is making people feel insecure about themselves. Technology has changed our behavior. One solution I have is we could talk more about this subject and we could learn to understand it more before it gets too far.

    1. Michaela, your explanation was very true. I think your solution of talking about this subject to understand it more would benefit many people. It has definitely influenced many and change people in positive and negative ways. If we do know how the internet creates false images and the reduction of face-to-face interactions beforehand, we'll be able to control ourselves and know the truth. Another solution that can be added to this topic is stricter age restrictions. You can use stricter age restrictions to insure that face-to-face interactions will happen. The restrictions can also benefit self-security (your other point.) This way, teenagers won't try to change themselves to look like older models.

  14. In the story "By the Waters of Babylon" there is a re occurring notation that in the past people ate knowledge to fast and where making unmeasurable leaps into technology and I believe that is still true today. My example of this is Ai that can program itself to do low skill jobs and in turn take those jobs from the average blue collar American. This is a problem because sense many people are going to be out of a job In the near future. This will drive unemployment up and which will lead to a overall weaker economy. You might be saying, well why don't they go out and find training to do higher skill jobs. Well this is not an option for many Americans because schools which teach these high skill jobs are expensive and are very hard to find and get into. There is a solution to this problem though and that is setting up free schools that are run by the state you live in this will let thousands of workers get the skills they need to succeed in todays new economy. This is beneficial to the government because it will keep thousands of people off welfare and it will show that we have the work force of tomorrow which means will keep companies here instead of in China or India .That is a problem with technology today and how we can deal with it.

    1. Hi Mat, first off, this is a great piece of writing on technology and what one problem that comes out of it. I completely agree with what you said about artificial intelligence and how it affects our daily lives, also how it can take jobs away from us. I honestly have nothing else to add to your writing, great job!

    2. Interesting solution, Matt! I agree with your solution that college should be open to all that can't afford it. New York has the Excelsior Scholarship, which provides mostly free tuition at CUNY and SUNY colleges and universities throughout the state. Another possible solution to the future of employment is to restrict the capabilities of artificial intelligence to slow the decline of jobs. That way, current workers can keep their jobs while our generation prepares to enter different careers.

    3. Hi Michael, I thought your rebuttal to my solution was well founded but it does have some holes. One being that a scholarship is only given to families that make under $110,000 a year which is far to low. I also believe that your solution is very good, but I do think it would be hard to pass legislation to make it possible. Anish, thank you for your response and completely agree with you agreeing with me.

  15. In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly. Dangers of technology are endless. Things like loss of privacy and less human interaction have permanently changed our world. Loss of privacy includes things like everything being monitored by the government or banks. But, the second that we say that we are concerned, they believe that we have something to hide. Human interaction has disappeared as well. In the 21st century, we don;t know how to talk. We believe that texting is best and we are setting the right example for generations to come. Everyone relies on technology, but what would happen if satellites went down? The dangers of technology are ruining the human race that we know. These facts came from: http://csglobe.com/the-10-biggest-dangers-posed-by-future-technology/

    1. I think that a possible solution to this problem would be to learn better ways to communicate with people in person without it being through the phone. If people are able to do this and learn how to communicate better in person that would eliminate the second problem that you said about people not being able to communicate without it being through text. While you are communicating through text you can not see the facial expressions of the person or the body language that they are giving off while they are talking. Which makes it more difficult to have a real conversation with someone.

    2. Kailey, I agree with you because people have the ability to look up from their phones, but they don't use it. Getting people off their phones might be a hard task to accomplish because people rely on their phones for everything from emergencies to homework. This would be a great solution if we could get it to work.

  16. In "By the waters of Babylon" John says, "Perhaps in the old days they ate knowledge too fast." I think an example of this is fake news websites. Not only are they misleading they are sometimes completely made up. One big example of this is the presidential election. It not only confused people it made them change their minds and opinion. Opinion sites change up to 54% of peoples decisions. Some solutions that you can do when you find a fake new site is report them if they violate the terms of service. You can also research more into the topic if you think it might be questionable. Some things you can do to see if it is a fake news website is look for an author, a publisher, or facts about who made the website. You need to check your source before you share or believe the story.

    1. I think the suggested solutions will work because the more research you do the more you will get a better understanding. And where you get/find the information is a really good way of knowing if it is reliable or not. Another way you could find out if its fake news or not is what the website tile is because many website tiles don't really make sense to the topic you are trying to look up.

    2. Great work! Misinformation by social media is becoming a pressing issue in America and around the world. I agree with your second solution as it will allow individual users to filter and analyze information from online sources. However, I don't agree with your first solution because biased media outlets, such as Breitbart and other partisan news sources, may not retract stories due to misinformation. Instead, I propose that the education system in our country should help students and future adults further to learn how to decide if a source is reputable.

    3. Michael thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree with the solution that you put forward, but I still agree with my claim about that you should reach out to the websites. This will make them aware that the public knows that their stories are fake.

  17. In "By the Waters of Babylon", John says, "Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast." One technology system which we are developing today are Virtual Reality systems, which are designed to simulate something happening to a person without it actually happening. This could be dangerous because it could cause people to become attatched to a virtual world and hardly ever take of their headsets, which would lessen their connection with reality. This could result in people accidentally getting hurt in the real world. This could also result in people missing out on experiencing their life outside the game. Virtual Reality could also have effects on your brain, because it attempts to change your brain's perception of reality with sounds and images. To keep Virtual Reality from becoming dangerous, we should limit our use of it, and it should be targeted less towards kids and more towards people in positions where Virtual Reality training could be a safer alternative to real training, as well as purposes that can make people's lives safer and more convenient. https://reporter.rit.edu/views/dangers-giving-virtual-reality

    1. Joanna that solution would definitely work. Having a mediator to limit the amount of time the person spends on a VR system. An outside "force" is one of the only ways to create a better habit. Another way we could fix this is by creating a limit in the systems to not let the player play when they've played too long. Only a specific override key can make the game go longer that's different for every VR system.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for supporting my solution; I would add to my original solution with the idea VR time limit should be adjustable, so parents or hospital workers can tailor the VR experience for the user's needs. Your solution was smart because VR users have a limited sense of time and need an outside force like the VR system to control their VR usage.

  18. In "The Waters of Babylon", John says, "Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast". In class we learned that Stephen Vincent Benet wanted to tell people the dangers of developing technology to fast. Today that is still a problem. Today North Korea has been developing its nuclear bombs at a very fast speed. Developing nuclear bombs at a fast speed can be very dangerous because during testing something could go wrong and the entire area would explode. Not only that but nuclear bombs create radiation so even after the bomb blew up the area would still be inhabitable for humans. The best answer to this is to stop using and developing nuclear warheads. This will benefit everyone in the long run. http://www.livescience.com/5752-hard-nuclear-weapons.html

    1. Great response, ThatDude! Your solution to end nuclear proliferation is an idea that will work because... it already is happening. The Non-Proliferation Treaty was signed and aimed to prevent the atom secret from spreading around the world. However, this will not stop North Korea as they probably have nuclear weapons. A potential solution to this quagmary is to propose a deal that is similar to the Iran Deal that would allow North Korea to use nuclear materials for scientific and reactor purposes while excluding nuclear weapons. In exchange, countries around the world would agree to remove their sanctions against North Korea. Although we cannot be certain that North Korea would agree to such proposal, it is only a matter of time before North Korea is compelled to attack the homeland. Nonetheless, great problem and solution!

      Delete
    2. Thank you Michael, my idea to end nuclear development is by all means a good plan but I do agree that North Korea would most likely not stop development unless they got something in return. Your suggestion for a deal following the guide lines of the Iran Deal might be able to work better. This would all be able to make the process of having all countries stop nuclear development.

  19. One piece of technology that is used without considering the risks are cell phones. Cell phones are dangerous for numerous reasons. A big problem with phones is security and privacy. There are many children who have phones and don't know about the risks and dangers that go along with it. Social media plays a big part in the security portion. Children could open websites and pages that could propose a threat to them. Ways we can help solve this problem are possibly having classes about how to use the internet safety. Also making people more aware in general of what they are posting online and avoiding posting too many personal details online. Cell phones are a very big part of this world and they could be of great use but we just need to know how to use them safely. https://www.networkworld.com/article/2346606/microsoft-subnet/microsoft-subnet-12-tips-for-safe-social-networking.html

I think you did a great job in compacting all that information in one paragraph!

    2. I also think that when you post something online there could be more filters to make sure you are not exposing too much information about yourself. Sometimes you can expose too much about yourself online without thinking and could lead to danger. If we had filters that could automatically highlight information to prevent you from sharing specific information, I think that would make technology more safe.

  20. In our daily lives we regularly use technology with practically no thought. It’s become so normal that we often don’t think of the dangers that could come with it. One such commodity is online shopping. It’s a convenient way of getting what you need fast without any lines or driving. However, it is now easier than ever to get scammed. Shopping on certain sites can put you at risk for credit card fraud or identity theft. Most times, this information is sold on the dark web and though unlikely, can be used to buy illegal goods under your name. This ends up with the purchase being tracked to you, and you get in trouble. Even credible sites can be hacked and turned into an unsafe site.
To shop safer is pretty easy to achieve, as long as you’re vigilant. Sometimes, it can be as easy as looking at the website URL; if it begins with “https://” you’re connecting to a secure, safe server. If it begins with “http://” it’s not a secure connection, and can be tracked by third parties (though, just because a website begins with http doesn’t always mean it’s bad.) Another good rule of thumb which is pretty much common sense is to shop from reputable sites that you know and trust. Many scam sites often advertise high quality products with extremely low prices, but when you order it it either never comes or is not as pictured. There are also review sites where you can look up the site you’re shopping on and see other customers’ reviews.

  21. In the story “By the waters of Babylon”, John says, “Perhaps in the old days, they ate knowlege too fast.” We learned that author Stephen Vincent Benet was suggesting that the quick development of technology could have catastrophic consequences. One part of technology that is often overlooked is social media and posts made online. Many colleges require your social media account usernames if you apply, and can check them or Google your name. Even though not all colleges do this, you never know. Not everyone will have their social media checked when applying, but according to a 2014 survery, 93% of job hiring managers will review a social profile before hiring or not hiring. This can have a terrible outcome if people applying for jobs or colleges are posting inappropriate things online. A solution to this would be simple, and that is to just be more cautious of what you put out online. Don’t cyberbully others, talk to strangers, or post anything that you wouldn’t want a college or hiring manager to see. http://time.com/money/3510967/jobvite-social-media-profiles-job-applicants/ and https://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/do-colleges-examine-your-online-presence

    2. This is a good idea, but in my opinion prevention can be more effective in the end. By educating people about how much their digital footprint impacts them, more will be likely be to see the consequences on their career and life, and see how easily this can be solved.

  22. In “By the Waters of Babylon”, as we discussed, John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” Today, we are eating knowledge too fast in the internet. We are starting the Internet of Things (IoT for short), and the internet is very insecure. In short, we are using the internet to access things remotely, and this lets hackers connect and make our homes freezing cold by accessing our thermostats, and spoiling our food by hacking our refrigerator, and soon crashing our cars by accessing them. Bank accounts could already be attacked, and now lots of other everyday objects—even the lights—can be hacked into and controlled by hackers. So overall, we should make sure to keep safe, and that we don’t neglect our own safety for convenience, and put passwords on our IoT objects (maybe even light switches).

    3. You say that you can't fully agree with this because not everybody has electronic refrigerators. The important thing, however, is how we prepare for the futures. Because the truth really is that not everybody has electronic refrigerators (or similar) yet. The IoT is advancing quickly and will soon become widespread. And hackers are a very real threat that shouldn't be ignored. Because with the IoT, hackers could control someone's entire home.

  23. In " By the Waters of Babylon" as we read in class in a part of the book it said perhaps in the old days we ate knowledge to fast. One device we use without consideration is our phones one way we could use less of our phone is by spending more time with your family and friends outside. You can also play outside instead of just being on your phone all day in the dark with your cover around you. The reason why i say this is because a lot of kids are losing their eyesight momentarily and becoming blind while there just looking at a small screen all day. In this one article this women in england lost her eyesight in her right eye at night it first happened a few weeks then it started happening every day now she's also having small strokes this could happen to you one day if you just keep looking at your phones

I agree with going outside and spending more time with your family will help people get off their phones, but I don't think people are just going to willingly get off heir phone and spend time with their family. I think one way to get kids off their phones and electronics is putting a time limit one them or they are only aloud on them at certain times. That way they wont have anything else to do. If they are not able to be on heir phones, they will want to do something else

  24. In the story waters of Babylon by Vincent Benet the mains character john say "perhaps in the old days we ate knowledge to fast". The book was published in 1937 and the author wanted to warn us about technology early on. But, in this time period this was during the making of the Atomic bomb. A newer technology that has dangers is Smartphones. Smartphones cause distraction and distractions can cause injuries or even death from distracted drivers or sometimes people who are crossing the street being distracted while texting walk out into a busy street without even thinking about it. One other danger is Identity fraud. Most people forget their passwords and they think the safest place to store them is on their phones. Skilled hackers can easily break into most phones and steal that information or even leak it to the public for the world to see. One way we can fix these problems is to strengthen your passwords and be smart about social media. This can happen to anyone at any time and it's a real threat.

  25. Nicely done George! The solution of security is a good one. But i would also suggest to encourage multiple companies making IoTs. If all of the coding is similar, hackers will have an easy way in. With more unique companies comes a harder challenge for hackers.

  26. Nice job. I think that security is really only a band aid solution. I think that we should actually add security passwords to devices, networks and apps before getting access to that device and etc. Another good way is to have a face scanner on a device or app. This won't let other people be able to access those apps or devices because since every facial shape is different, this device or app could only recognize your face and not others.

  28. Really nice job George I like the idea of security a lot and I think it is a very smart one. I think a very good idea to keep people from hacking different websites or social media is keeping people on watch for hackers 24/7 all of the time. People that are really good with tech of course and are trained properly. They will be able to fight off the hackers when they are trying to hack the company because they are always on watch.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you George. Your idea of a 24/7 monitoring system might work, but it is far too hard to maintain. Besides, hackers today use loopholes in pre-existing programs to do what they have to do, so it would be hard to detect. I think a better solution would be to encrypt data better so smart devices are harder to hack. This would make hackers lose incentive to enter these devices in the first place.
