Earlier in the year, you researched a societal problem of your choice. You should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.
In one paragraph:
- explain what the societal problem is, and
- provide some proof that the problem exists (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).
One of the problems we face at the moment is global warming. When we burn fossil fuels oil, coal, and natural gas to generate electricity, power our vehicles, and heat our homes we release CO2(Carbon Dioxide). This gas traps heat, and makes the planet warmer than it should be. We know this because the temperature has been increasing and this shows global warming is taking place. “Every one of the past 40 years has been warmer than the 20th century average. 2016 was the hottest year on record. The 12 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998.”(Union of Concerned Scientists) This provides proof that the problem exists, so we need to find solutions to fix this problem.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is an abhorrent problem that needs to be stopped, and some possible solutions are creating laws that suppress the amount of carbon emissions from factories and cars. There is more pollution in the winter because all the trees are hibernating, so there could be laws that limit carbon dioxide emissions in the winter and fall only.
DeleteGlobal warming is a huge problem, as you know. I think one way to help slow down global warming until we can find more solutions is to stop deforestation, because trees take in Co2 and release oxygen.
DeleteGlobal Warming can be stopped. One solution is that we use renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power. This would replace the unneeded gases being released as a source of energy.
DeleteThis is a very big problem and we need to stop it I think that one way we can stop it could be we could try and stop or do less of shore drilling, try and make in mandatory that we use solar power plants forour houses and business.
DeleteI think that a solution to reduce greenhouse gases would be to use cars that run of of energy sources that don't release CO2.
DeleteFemales are judged and criticized for many things. Their looks, their attitude, even their cooking! One thing they also get judged for is their education. Girls from all over the world continuously are criticized for going to school or even getting an education at all. In Chibok, a town in Nigeria, a jihadist group was formed that called themselves Boko Haram (“Western education is forbidden”). On April fourteenth during midnight, the group kidnapped three hundred girls around the age of sixteen to eighteen years old in their school called Government Girls Secondary School. Boko Haram believed that girls should have no education and they hurt and kill females that they capture. Sometimes they even force their victims into forced marriages with one of the members of Boko Haram. Another example of females feeling deprived of an education would be the story of Malala. Malala grew up in Swat Valley, Pakistan with her loving family. Malala believed in education for every girl and she was an activist on the situation. A jihadist group called the Taliban were strongly against the right for girls to be able to go to school. The Taliban heard about Malala and voted to kill her. The Taliban attempted to kill Malala but instead, shot her through the head. Malala was rushed to the hospital and survived miraculously. Malala is now a global activist and advocate and still continues to help girls go to school. Malala can not return to her home country or else she will be hunted and killed by the Taliban, but she has settled on in Britain where she has a great life. Even though females are sometimes frowned upon for having an education, we will still fight for our equal rights every single day.
ReplyDeleteI think a possible solution to this problem is to have more women activists to stand up for women's education and rights, but this will only work with support from the whole country. Also I think schools should be supporting women's right for education in their country and state.
DeleteGreat job, Jessica! I think that if people could negotiate for a higher wage, the wage gap would close far faster because of wages everywhere increasing.
DeleteI think a solution is to just make everything equal. In countries with terrorist groups, and other things like that, we keep fighting them and then make things equal.
DeleteI think one possible solution could be having more clubs and events that support equal rights for women. More people will be exposed to the ideas for equal rights and that will help spread awareness. Good job!
DeleteOne solution is for countries to create laws that require all children to go to school, regardless of their gender. Another solution is for more people to protest nonviolently on behalf of women and girls. Great paragraph, Jessica!
DeleteRacism is a problem that has been going on for years. In simple terms, racism is the discrimination against a different race. This discrimination is based on the belief that one race is superior to another. An example of this is with the transportation company Uber. Uber drivers can see the name of the person that they must drive before accepting the ride. People who have African American sounding names, like mine for example, will have more ride cancellations than those with white sounding names. Also African Americans tend to have several cancellations and 35% longer waits when it comes to Uber. White people have reported to having only short waits and not very many cancels. This is a form of racism. Racism is a problem that needs a solution. What are you going to do about it?
ReplyDeleteI think that you should try and find laws like the Jim Crow Laws and some other laws that were focused on racism, but also try and find some information on laws that tried preventing racism.
DeleteRacism is still a very prominent thing in today's society and I don't understand why racists can't comprehend that we're all human. We think and express emotions just like any person would, so why should a person's race be such a hard thing for a person of a different race to deal with?
DeleteAfter some research I found that people are not born racist. I found that they are taught to be racist. If you were really trying to get rid of racism then you need to not tell kids about racism because when they learn something they will use it.
DeleteI think that there should be laws about racism so that you can get in trouble for being racist. People should celebrate diversity and have festivals at school to show kids that we should all accept each other.
DeleteDo you ever feel like you are being treated unfairly just because you are a male or a female? Being treated unfairly solely based on gender, or partially based on gender is gender inequality. Gender inequality is the idea men and women are not equals. For example, when the US women's soccer team won the World Cup in 2015. They received $2 million for winning. When the German men won their World Cup in 2015, they received $35 million for winning. Also the US men's soccer team received $8 million, and they were knocked out in the first round. For getting knocked out in the first round; the US men's team received four times the amount the US women's team got for winning the World Cup. Does this seem fair to you? If not, what will you do to help gender inequality become gender equality?
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Grace! One solution that is currently in the process is the attempt to make the winning pay of women's teams equal to the pay of men's teams. Many womens' teams have received more money for winning than they have in previous years.
DeleteI completely agree that sexism is a real thing in fact it's not just women who are being affected it's men too. I think that the only good solution to this problem is if employers step up and give people equal pay. Also the government needs to regulate pay more.
DeleteIt is sad that people are treated a certain way because of their gender. But, you also got to think about how people do the job. For example; if a man does the job better than the women, works more than her, has a higher position, etc..then it makes sense if he got paid a bit more. But, out of that I agree that women should be treated fairly. For a solution, I think that it should be evaluated. For example; if it's between a job like thing, they should look at the work they both have done, how hard they work, how much they worked, etc..
DeleteSo I think evaluating how the worker does their job is the best solution.
I think a solution could be that everyone got what they earned, and not for what gender they are. For world cups or any other sports there should be equal pay, because everyone is pretty much doing the same thing, no matter what gender they are.But I think that the government should make all jobs have equal pay.
DeleteWe are going through the 6th mass extinction the world has ever seen. And it’s also the biggest. You may not realize it, but there are species going extinct all the time nowadays. And if this continues, humans may be up next. You’ve heard of all the factors that are contributing to this crisis. Global warming, deforestation, and pollution are the biggies. But there are many others as well. Because of these, one species goes extinct every twenty minutes. Shocking, isn’t it. That adds up to at least 10000 extinctions per year. By 2050, a quarter of all species will be wiped from the face of the earth. You may have heard of some of these species that have already gone extinct. The infamous dodo bird, the great auk, and the atlas bear. And many are to follow. But here's is the worst part. We are the cause of it. In theory, we are creating our own (and many others) end. We might as well be saying, “ Welcome 6th mass extinction. Please end humanity.”
ReplyDeleteA solution that is in progress right now is that the people are forbidding hunting of certain animals.
DeleteA solution that might work best is planting more trees so that they can help remove some carbon dioxide from the air and maybe help slow down air pollution.
DeleteA solution I have is that we can replace oil use with renewable energy like biomass, wind power, solar and geothermal. The use of renewable energy will reduce the major effects of Global Warming. As for pollution, many gases are let into the air from big manufacturing factories (example), we could set rules and laws about what they can let out into the atmosphere without hurting their business.
DeleteAwareness of what we are doing to the earth is not common. Most people, including myself, did not know that a species goes extinct every twenty minutes. If the public knew about this kind of mass extinction, conservation efforts would be sped up by multitudes.
DeleteIllegally using violence or imitation against citizens for political means, is also known as terrorism. This word has been around since the end of the 18th century during the reign of terror in the French Revolution. Although the world terrorism has been around for 200 plus years, but people, terrorizing each other has been around since the beginning of humans. It’s still going on today, just look at the 9/11 attack on the twin towers, and the Boston Bombing from just a few years ago. Terrorism is huge problem and we need to band together to stop it.
ReplyDeleteI think one solution that might work best could be having stronger gun laws. This could make it harder to harm more people in a terrorist attack.
DeleteI think there should be heavier monitoring on where people bring guns.Like schools and public areas. This might help by lowering he rate of people in danger is there is a shooting.
DeleteOne solution to this problem is to have a group of people who look for recruitment websites for terrorist organizations like Isis and take them down however it wouldn't really effect unorganized terrorism.
DeleteI think one solution that might work is having stronger rules when going to buy guns. It should go through the government, you shouldn't have any criminal offenses, etc. There should also be some type of monitor in or on the gun that shows where you are when the gun is shot.
DeleteHealth care is a big societal problem because many people lack access to it. In Sub-Saharan African countries and many third world countries health care is bad. African countries have very few doctors ( most doctors from Africa work abroad ) causing there to be very little access the health care. If there is a doctor available in those countries appointments are very expensive. People in those countries are pushed into poverty because they want to have health care. Since there is a lack of health care HIV and AIDS are huge epidemics that kill many people because they don’t get any help. People don’t just die of diseases like HIV and AIDS, getting the pneumonia which is easily curable in The US is a deathly disease in many third world countries. So, healthcare is a big societal problem.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, vaccines have been sent to needing countries to help with the disease problem. Vaccines sometimes need to be kept in specific conditions. I know of transporting devices in the process of being created to help keep those conditions when transporting vaccines to afric.
DeleteI think that maybe if we try to send some people from Africa to the United States and don´t have to send over supplies would work easier. We could possibly pay for the plane ride over in order to help the person in need. The little access to medicines for kids and adult in Africa could be possibly stopped if we start sending them to the United States for treatment.
DeleteWe need to raise money that will allow companies such as UNICEF to expand and get better supplies. This will ensure that more Africans get the proper medical care.
DeleteI know that there are certain organizations that currently travel to third world countries to assist people who are ill and give less wealthy areas supplies in order to help any sick or injured people. Doctors also travel to other countries and perform surgeries on younger children who would benefit from it.
DeleteOne problem our society faces is animal abuse. Animal abuse is defined differently by individual states. Most laws only protect pets, not the wild animals that humans put in danger on a day to day basis. In the US, a survey showed that 30% of children admitted animal abuse. Another survey showed that 14% of the population had witnessed animal abuse. Those two surveys showed that there are about 15 million animal abuse incidents in one year. There are three types of animal abuse. They are neglect, hoarding, and physical abuse. In one year there is an estimated 5,000 cases of hoarding. Each case involves about 40 animals. Hoarding cases usually affect dogs, not cats. This is a huge problem and something needs to be done to stop animal abuse.
ReplyDeleteIt would be necessary to enforce these laws somehow, but by placing a legal limit on the number of pets a household is allowed to care for, hoarding could possibly be solved.
DeleteI think a possible solution could be to inform people about how to report something if they see animal abuse happening.
DeleteThe Animal Hoarding is covered under every state's animal cruelty statute. The reason this law didn't work that well is because it's hard to prosecute hoarders. This is because many are emotionally troubled than criminally inclined.
DeleteJustin, I agree with you that animal abuse must be stopped. One solution is to educate people on the unrighteousness of animal abuse so they will have better knowledge on the problem and how to prevent it. Organizations to prevent animal abuse should be set up and they should take action on any animal abuse in their area.
DeleteOne problem of our time is endangered species. However, this isn’t just a problem of today. Poaching is one cause of endangered species that dates back to the Middle Ages. It’s a felony, but it’s still a way that people get quick cash and one of the leading causes of endangered species today. The animals that are poached vary between different areas, but one of the worst cases of poaching thrives in Africa. Africa is one place where many animals are killed for specific body parts, including the endangered African Elephant, whose tusks sell for $350 per pound ($700 per kilogram). Laws against poaching vary between states, ranging from almost no consequence to time in jail and getting your hunting license taken away. All in all, the worst part is that people still do it, and will continue to, no matter what the consequences. Poaching has taken the lives of animals for a long time, and there’s almost no chance of it ever stopping, but if there were ever even the slightest chance, that would be a huge win for animals everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI think that a possible solution to this might be giving a lot more funding to government departments that protect animls and enforce consequences for people who violate these laws or regulations. If these agencies have more funding, they might be able to save these animals after all.
DeleteGreat paragraph! A possible solution for this is, the government could set up stricter laws about the endangered species and poaching.
DeleteGreat job Aria! I think a possible solution is to make more places to put endangered animals that no one can get to except the people that take care of them.
DeleteGood job Aria! I think instead of having laws vary from state to state, the government should make laws that are the same for every state, and make more serious consequences if they aren't followed.
DeleteEquality. A word that most people know the meaning of but some people don’t get the treatment of. Especially one group in particular, one that makes up more than half the world’s population. Women. Gender Equality is a big issue that started from the time humans were created. Gender Equality is when women (could also be men) are not treated equally. That could mean not being treated fairly in the work environment, at home, or in public. Although there has been great strides in women’s equality, women have still not been able to achieve it fully. For example you may have watched the US women’s world cup in 2015 along with 27 million other people, when they beat Japan with a score of 5 to 2. It was the most watched soccer game in history. The women’s team made an extra 75,000 dollars for winning the world cup, which might seem like a lot of money. However if the US men’s team were to win that same tournament they would make 400,000 dollars extra. Even though the Women’s team played in the game that was the most watched soccer game in history, one player on the women’s team wouldn’t even make close to half of what one player on the men’s team would. If four of the players on the women’s team were to pool their money together it still wouldn’t equal what one of the players on the men’s team would make. I don’t know about you but that doesn’t seem like gender equality to me.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Ellen, this topic is really interesting to me too. I think some possible solutions to gender inequality would be to simply pay women the same amount as men. Or if companies can't afford that, just bring the men's salary down to women's so it's at least fair. I think maybe you should research wage gaps in other professions besides sports, and if there are laws of any type put in place to make it more equal.
DeleteGreat job Ellen, I know that Carli Lloyd on the US women's soccer team is trying to get an equal pay for winning the women's world cup. I think that employers in the workforce should try hard to not have there be a pay gap and pay both genders the same amount of money because women do the same amount of work and give the same amount of effort as men do.
DeleteGreat job Ellen, what might be a good way to fix this is to make people more aware of this problem. I myself didn't really think this was a problem anymore until now, so maybe making people more aware is a good solution.
DeleteNice job Ellen, this problem is not only in sports but at work too. Companies should provide a fair salary range and aim for a 50-50 gender split.
DeleteChild labor: when children under the age of 16 are put to work, enduring long hours in industry and business. It’s real and here guys. In 2008, UNICEF (The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) stated that there were 158 million children worldwide, from ages five to fourteen, enduring child labor. Many children choose to start working excessive hours and hard jobs at a young age in order to survive, support their family, or help pay off debts that their parents created. These are some reasons why kids are found sewing 650 stitches into heavy leathered soccer balls in factories found in India and Pakistan. This pressures the joints in their fingers and causes permanent damage to their lungs due to the dust and fibers in the air. This all started in the Industrial Revolution when kids under age six were working 12 to 16 hours a day, being beaten if they were to fall asleep, and performing risky tasks like chimney sweeping and crawling through mine tunnels. As of June of 2016, UNICEF stated a new stat, saying that now there were 150 million children worldwide involved in child labor. The numbers may be decreasing but not fast enough. Anyone can help, including you.
ReplyDeleteSome solutions that have been attempted already are creating laws. But these laws still allow children to work but only for a certain amount of hour. I think that laws need to prevent kids from working at all not just limit the amount of time they can work.
DeleteThe United Nations could do some sort of petition to try and get as many countries as possible to ban all child labor in their country.
DeleteChild labor can also cause children not to attend to school which will make them uneducated. Some solutions we can do is to make sure children are attending school so they be educated, we can also make sure that parents are supportive to there children by preventing them to endure child labor.
DeleteI believe that is police were to inspect business locations with a warrant in countries where this is happening we could stop child labor from happening.
DeleteTerrorism. It has been a problem that has plagued humankind ever since civilization began. The September 11th attacks, Al-Qaeda and ISIS are often most associated with terrorism in today's modern society. These are all modern examples that everybody knows about, but one example of terrorism that you probably haven't heard of involves the Assassins. Knows as the Hashashin in their time, the Assassins were one of the earliest terrorist groups which used terror and murder to get what they wanted. As you can see, these tactics are used by modern terrorist groups. With every terrorist group lies a goal of some sorts and the Assassins apply to that rule. Their main goal was to spread Ismailism throughout the world. The Assassins would murder religious leaders who weren't taking religion seriously and as their top priority. The Assassins were divided into three classes. The top class being the Grand Master. The Grand Master had absolute power over his people and commanded the class below it, which were the Grand Priors. The Grand Priors would then command the Propagandists, the lowest class who would carry out the murders. If the propagandists survived when they carried out the murder, it would be seen as a disgrace to the Grand Master who would order the Propagandists' immediate execution. The Assassins ruled for over 200 years before finally being taken out by the Mongol Empire. This just shows how effective terrorism can be and how it has existed as far back as the 11th century.
ReplyDeleteI believe that if we take terrorist group out at the source then we could end them. Sure groups will come back, and because of that we will just exterminate them once more.
DeleteYou can't let fear get to you. That is what gives the terrorist power. Like FDR once said, " The only thing to fear is fear itself." So if you do not fear them and stand up taller than them then you can vanquish the people who try to threaten you.
DeleteOne solution may be to attack their territories. Though this may not be the best option, it would show terrorist groups what it is like when they attack other territories.
DeleteI believe that making a worldwide task force to combat any religious extremism. Organising a worldwide effort would help eliminate many harmful organizations like ISIS,the KKK, and Boko Haram.
DeleteI believe that making a worldwide task force to combat any religious extremism. Organising a worldwide effort would help eliminate many harmful organizations like ISIS,the KKK, and Boko Haram.
DeleteDuring the developing industrial age, many kids started to work to support their families. This was known as the “Dirty” phase. Almost all countries has went through this stage, but many countries still have child labor, even though they have already been developed. The meaning of child labor is to make a child under 16 work so much that it damages their spirits and their minds. This problem is the worst kind for children because they may not be able to go to school or they are mentally pressured by school work and labor. During child labor, the child is made to dangerous work that no other children could imagine. One example for child labor is Coal mines. When children work in coal mines, they are usually assigned to pick slate from the coals. This is dangerous because slates are very sharp and can make the child exposed to disease, which is very dangerous for children at their age.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion I have is more laws against this villainy. Many African child slaves are taken at a young age, by people who tell their parents the kids will have a better life. If we could enforce laws against the people who make kids do their dirty work, and have task forces to stop them, we could end this issue.
DeleteOne solution we can do is make a law saying that someone has to be 16 or up years old in order to work at a job. To make sure that this law is working and not being broken is that when someone wants to work for someone or at a job they have to give the person who is the boss a copy of their birth certificate to make sure that their 16 or up years old. To make that the boss isn't lying is that he has to file that someone 16 and up years old is working for them and he has to send this file to the government and if the boss is lying then they will lose their job.
DeleteOne solution that I have is for countries that are against child labor. They should put an embargo or threaten the countries that approve child labor and/or encourage it.
DeleteAnother solution for child labor is that kids at the age of 16 and above should be working. Not at any age below that. We should create a law that children at the age of 17 or older are excepted to work not at 16 years or below because many kids are endangered of working at jobs that adults work at so this is a good societal problem that needs to be fixed
DeleteIn today's society we seem to have come across a fairly new problem that has affected the media and the public opinion since we can remember, fake news. Fake news is defined as the fabrication of a news story used to motivate an opinion. Today it is rumoured that fake news has since arisen from the start of the 2016 presidential election however the rise of fake news began ever since 1898, just before the Spanish American War, it was called yellow journalism. Yellow Journalism is journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration. The USS Marine was an american naval ship docked at the Havana Harbor at the time of its explosion killing a total of 268 American men. No one had discovered the cause of the explosion forcing many to believe it was an attack by the opposing side. Articles such as the Hearst New York Journal and the New York World began making claims against Spain for causing such an explosion. Spain responded with no but the yellow press continued to pressure the US into believing what wasn't true as a result the phrase "Remember the Maine" became the slogan driving public opinion to war. Today it is known as one of the factors that caused the war. As you can see news fabrication has been a massive problem. Claims and lies against Hilary Clinton as well as Donald Trump has lead to a massive shift in the public opinion. Recent technologies have allowed so fake news articles can spread fast and reach its desired audience, we need solutions to tackle this problem as fast as possible otherwise the fate of the media will be affected for a whole generation of time.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest solving this problem by having a law requiring all fake news articles have the words "Fake News" in the headline, or else they would have to pay a heavy fine. This would also make it so that fake news is easy to identify, and that would make it lose it's propaganda power.
DeleteMy suggestion is that every article not posted by the an actual news place should be deleted as soon as possible. Or any articles that aren't true should be deleted by the government.
DeleteI think this should be illegal and we should put people in jail for spreading fake news. I also think that people should rely solely on reliable news networks such as CNN or fox news.
DeleteToo many people upload fake news. So maybe as a solution we could make people pay a fee who upload these articles; hopefully trying to stop the spread of it. Also the government could get involved and help try to stop it.
DeleteThe exponentially growing problem; overpopulation. Think to the basic laws of natural selection: more offspring will be made than can survive. When humans first originated, many humans were born but many died as well, from natural things like disease, starvation, being eaten and so on. There was very little population increase because the high death rate kept the birth rate in check. For almost all of human history, the world population hadn't even reached 200 million. But as time went on, the technology got better, increasing the birth rate while decreasing the death rate. And thus, the overpopulation crisis was born. This started at around 1800 during the Industrial Revolution. A huge population surge appeared with the new technology. The population in 1800 was around 990 million people, not a major problem. It rose to 1.65 billion in 1900, 2.3 billion in 1940, 4.44 billion in 1980 and 6.93 billion in 2010. Now do you see the problem? More people means more resources consumed; a big population will strip the Earth dry of resources and then where would we be? This is definitely a more recent problem with the lag time of the exponential growth over.
ReplyDeleteBrock, to be honest I really didn't know our population was this large. The population growth rate, however has decreased. People now are having less children and with all the viral diseases our population has been kind of put into check; but this good.
DeleteOverpopulation Is a huge issue Brock, but there isn't really a good way to stop overpopulation. One thing we could try is making laws saying that you can only have one child, which we have tried in china already, but I really don't know of a better way to stop overpopulation.
DeleteA solution for overpopulation could be to have strict laws limiting families to not have twenty children, but families could still have multiple children. The limit could be eight children per family because you can have octuplets.
DeleteA solution that I know that has been already tried for overpopulation is finding creative ways to fit a lot of people in a small space. I know in Japan, their apartments are really small but people have found creative ways to live in small spaces comfortably. This could help provide the world with more land to help sustain everyone.
DeleteRecycling has been a societal problem from many years. When you recycle you convert waste into reusable material. Recycling is very important because waste had a huge impact in our lives. It helps reduce pollution and reduces the need for raw materials which preserves rainforests. Burning coal and natural gasses forms energy, but people are using up the earth’s supply of coal, oil, and gasses. These sources of energy are gone and can't be replaced. When the world recycles it uses up less of the earth's natural forms of energy. Every American throws 1,000 pounds of trash every year and we burn 33 million tons of trash every year for fuel. When trash is burned it releases more harmful chemicals into the air. Much of the waste in the trash can be recycled and can save energy. For example, when we recycle 1 ton of aluminum we converse more than 207 Btu. Also, recycling 5,000 of sheets of paper saves 250 gallons of water on earth. Recycling is still a problem today and if the world recycled more we would have less toxins in the air and can reuse energy.
ReplyDeleteI know that using renewable resources has also been used to help get rid of waste. For example there is, solar energy, hyperthermal energy, biomass, etc. These are all alternatives to using nonrenewable resources like fossil fuels.
DeleteRecycling is something that I think we need to think about. One solution that could work is to replace electricity with solar energy. Some people already have done this, but I think it would be more effective if it had a greater amount of people involved.
DeleteI think that that if we had more dams, solar panels and windmills we wouldn't need to use coal, oil and gases we could use clean energy.
DeleteI believe that non-recycling is a big problem that needs to be fixed. If people were to recycle a lot more plastic than what we have been, then there would be a lot less trash in places like the oceans. And if we used more renewable energy sources, like sunlight and air power, there’d be a lot less pollution in the air.
DeleteHave you ever thought you were so hungry, that you were going to “die?” Ever so hungry that you’d do anything to grasp that tantalizing ice cream cone? Well, one you get your hands on that cone, you really shouldn’t take it for granted. There are helpless people in our world hoping to eat at least one piece of bread a day. World hunger is a huge crisis in our day. We have ruined so many farms and killed so much cattle that it’s hard for us to supply the world with food. Instead of feeding poorer countries who need the food, we’re giving it all to richer countries for money. So far, one-fourth of the Earth’s used land surface is for cattle grazing. One-third of our land is used for farming and crops. Fifty million adults and sixteen million kids are hungry. There are 570 million people hungry in Asia, 45 percent of Mexico’s population are hungry and over ten million Peruvians in South America are hungry. The next time you can’t wait to eat that piece of pizza or delicious cookie, think about the starving people in Asia and Africa.
ReplyDeleteOne solution that is already in progress are the formation of organizations like Action Against Hunger. These organizations recruit volunteers to go on humanitarian trips and help the needy by providing them with clean, nutritious food.
DeleteOne solution I can offer based on research and thinking is donating. You already see people donating to charities on a daily basis, but sometimes you don't have the extra money. If your parents take out a small amount of money each month from their paycheck and donate it, it can get this problem to go away a little bit faster.
DeleteI think that another solution to this problem (which might already be in the works I'm not exactly sure) is to start a food drive for kids who are actually starving. Maybe we could start having kids who eat all the time bring some of their favorite foods to the drive and we could send them over and keep them sealed so they stay fresh for everyone in need.
DeleteThere are things that the government is doing to help against hunger. When Obama was in office he started the Feed The Future act, which helped feeding the starving. In 2009 Obama committed 3.5 billion dollars to end hunger and extreme poverty.
DeleteUnemployment. The second most leading cause of homelessness. This is the phenomenon that occurs when someone is searching for a place to work, but is to no avail. This problem can be traced back all the way back to the 1930’s during the Great Depression. The unemployment rate mid-depression reached its peak quantity at twenty five percent of all workers in America. But does unemployment still exist today? The answer is yes, however the rates have been surprisingly moving down recently; at a current unemployment rate of about 4.6%. Unemployment is determined mostly by the economy’s conditional status, therefore there is no prediction for future unemployment rates. Supply and demand are major contributors of unemployment, as jobs are affected by what people make and what people need.
ReplyDeleteThe main reason that people are unemployed is because they lack education, and some presidential candidates have proposed that we should give free education which will give people more jobs.
DeleteOne solution could be opening up more job opportunities. That would mean we have to make room for more people to work but opening up more job opportunities would make it so people weren't unemployed.
DeleteWe could try to create jobs that don't require extensive credentials. This will make it easier for people who might not have gotten a good education that would earn them those high credentials.
DeleteOne solution to this is experience if people get more experience around that job they want to do they have a better chance people need to show they deserve that job.
DeleteJunho if people work together to help the homeless find jobs that increases their chances of receiving an income and with that income they can buy a place to stay. If people work together they can achieve a lot of things they can help the homeless get back on their feet and onto the road of success. I think working with other will be a good solution.
DeleteOne of the many crucial societal problems is Gender inequality, which is incredibly prominent in the workplace. Women are generally paid seventy-five cents for every dollar a man earns. This difference is present for all occupations. It is also known that women are subject to lookism. While pretty women are considered intelligent and able to take action, overweight women are considered lazy and unambitious. In some cases, managers also think that they are wasting time training women because they feel that women are going to put in less work hours, or stop working for child care. Infact, this is extremely unlikely since fifty percent of the work force consists of women, who are most likely working to support their families. The problem of gender inequality in the workplace is not only present today, but was present in the past as well. In the year 1989, forty five percent of the employed people were women, but only a small amount of those women were employed for decision making jobs. That same year, men outnumbered the women for decision-making roles, 1.5 to 1. It is clear that gender inequality especially in the workplace is a colossal societal problem, that needs a solution.
ReplyDeleteA solution for gender inequality could be to protest workplaces that discriminate against women. Another solution is to try to get a law through Congress that makes it illegal to discriminate against women in any workforce.
DeleteThe equal pay act of 1963 was signed in by John F Kennedy, and outlaws any pay discrimination based on sex. It worked for the most part as woman's salary has gotten higher. This law is still active and includes almost all jobs.
DeleteI don't think that we are going to be able to solve gender inequality for a long time, but a solution for women that don't think that they are getting paid a fair amount would be for them to talk to their boss about a raise.
DeleteThe law of causation states that there is a relationship between two processes or states, with one influencing or partially causing the other. In a real world situation, the world economy affects the global workforce. When the economy is weak, then the workforce will be as well. This leads to the enduring societal problem known as unemployment. Throughout history, unemployment has plagued large populations and has been an issue many families have to deal with.
ReplyDeleteUnemployment, as it sounds, is the state of not being employed. People who are long term unemployed have been out of work for more than twenty-seven weeks. This became a major issue starting in the Great Depression. The unemployment rate skyrocketed to over twenty percent, accounting for nearly fifteen million Americans without a job. This lead to alcohol abuse, depression, lack of motivation and even suicide. After the second World War, an economic depression in the 1950’s lead to unemployment rates of nearly seven percent. Unemployment has accounted for or influenced nearly forty-five thousand suicides annually. A final example of unemployment was after the 9/11 attacks, when five-hundred seven extended mass layoffs were reported. These layoffs accounted for more than thirty-thousand people without a job. This not only lead to a dip in the economy but also family and social problems.
There could be laws and organizations that prevent another depression and regression; like the The Civil Works Administration that gave jobs and work to 4 million people. Also there could be new laws that help stabilize the economy and communities.
DeleteOne Solution could be to give people jobs that robots have. If we put more people in assembly lines, then more people would have jobs. Then those people could buy things that someone else made, which causes more jobs to be made in the process.
DeleteWe could research new technology to create more jobs. This makes new jobs because new technology need people to build and use it. The new technologies could also help fix other issues.
DeleteGreat job Nick! One solution could be that we could use robots to help us but not with our jobs. We could take the robots that are being used in jobs and use them for another problem while we can then take our jobs back. We could have the robots help people instead of making it harder for them.
DeleteAssassinations of dictators have occurred, and have had varying degrees of success. It all depends on how the society under oppression views the dictator. If the society hates the dictator, then major reform will happen after the dictator is assassinated; if the society views the dictator as a hero, such as Cuba, then there will be little or no reform in that society.
ReplyDeleteTo stop the violence against the LGBT community we could put harsher regulations on schools for how they handle the bullying of children that identify themselves as apart of LGBT.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is a problem in our society. Inequality in general is a big problem. It is okay to have opinions but it is not right to be rude to people about who they are. There is not a lot we can do for solutions because judgement is just a part of society when it comes to people. But, if there is any violence towards them (or anyone), there should be consequences (legal ones) for ex; the Orlando shooting. There should be consequences because it was hurting an individual, it is wrong.
ReplyDeleteIf we could make our world work on one main economy then the effects may change the view of countries run by dictatorships. We could also attempt to elect one president for the whole earth however that possibility is less likely.
ReplyDeleteI think that if we get ride of the dictators some how our world would better. A country is not made for someone to take complete control of everything and everyone it is made to work together to just keep improving.
ReplyDeleteStopping the violence against LGBT people is tricky but it can be done. Kids in school who identify as a part of the LGBT community they should be able to apply for protection against bullying, so maybe they have a teacher aide with them so other kids can't pick on them or if a LGBT child reports to a teacher about being bullied the child that was picking on them would receive a punishment.
ReplyDeleteOne way to deal with dictators is put sanctions on them. Oppress their power until they are weakened. Then build anew on top of their turmoil.
ReplyDeleteOne way to help is create laws that help stop discrimination against the LGBT community and to have them be treated equally. Also try to see if any laws were created to help the LGBT community and see what didn't work and try to improve on their solution.
ReplyDeleteThe solution i'm seeing nowadays is that many school districts in the Country and Canada Have tried to change the curriculum of elementary aged children to be more inclusive to the idea that someone may have Two Dads or Two Moms and that they shouldn't be judge for that.
ReplyDeleteWell The idea of members of LGBT being not equal to a straight person is gonna stay strong as many pople have just been raised not to support it. But we have to make it clear to those people that members of LGBT communities are still people and that punishment we'll be be laid out accordingly and appropriately (depending on what they do
ReplyDeleteDeforestation is the act or process of clearing forests or trees to be repurposed for other uses. It is a problem that exists, mainly because us humans find other uses for trees, or the land that trees take up. The problem is that our egocentrics minds dotn always think about our actions when it comes to cutting down trees. As a result, forests are disappearing at a rate of 772,000 Sq mi. Per year (3x the size of texas). The cause of this is usually illegal logging, and paper demand. If deforestation keeps going at the current rate, forests could disappear completely by 2030. Have fun global warming activists, because trees turn c02 into oxygen.

I agree that deforestation is a major societal problem. One way to combat deforestation (besides simply "planting more trees") is to use more eco-friendly materials. Having recyclable materials to build structures normally using wood can help eliminate deforestation.
DeleteKorbin, this is a problem; Deforestation can have a huge negative effect. One way that has been attempted to help decrease deforestation is paperless hand dryers. These dryers don't use paper; and if these become more popular there will be less of a need for paper.
DeleteFrom Muhib but reposted here because he didn't follow directions:
DeleteKorbin I agree that deforestation is a societal problem on the rise, for the longer it goes ignored the harder it becomes to solve. Some solutions that are already in use by governments and private companies include replanting and rotation. These two methods when paired together become very effective. For example, in oregon state lumberjacks will divide a forest into 4 sections,so the next year they would transition to a different section meanwhile the previously cut down section would once again become lush again. Usually this cycle of cutting, planting, growing, and recutting creates an unharming cycle to the environment. In conclusion, I agree that this is one societal problem that if ignored could have serious repercussions.
Korbin, I agree that deforestation is a huge problem and it needs to be solved soon. One way we could solve this problem is by using technology instead of paper. By reducing the amount of paper we use on a daily basis we can cut back on the number of trees we need to cut down to produce paper.
