Earlier in the year, you researched a societal problem of your choice. You should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.
In one paragraph:
- explain what the societal problem is, and
- provide some proof that the problem exists (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).
Slavery. It’s dated back into the ancient world, but it's still something that occurs today. There is many different types of slavery, but two examples of slavery today is human trafficking and human exploitation. Now it doesn’t happen in public, it happens “underground”. That means it’s difficult to know the exact number of people being trafficked or enslaved. In 2012, an estimated 20.9 million people were enslaved. About 4.5 million people in sexual slavery, 14.2 million in forced labor and about 2.2 million in state-imposed labor. The sale of humans ended in 1981, but slavery still happens across the globe. Not because of people legally being slaves, but because there are still slave masters and traders out there. People are not property, so we can't let this continue.
ReplyDeleteGreat paragraph! One solution to end this is to make it illegal to force labor and force other types of slavery. If someone sees anything they think is slavery, they should have them arrested for life and maybe a sentence for life will frighten slave masters so they don't fall into getting slaves anymore.
DeleteNice paragraph, Carrington! One solution would be more general education so that the public knows what's really going on. If most of the population don't know what's really happening, then it's the job of other people to put a plan into action to make a problem into something that people can't ignore.
DeleteA solution that may work is to tell the people in slavery to stand up or find some way to escape. They are suffering because they are being treated like trash. We need to help them escape from this and be confident so they can fight their battles.
DeleteOne solution is to have protests against slavery and labor work. Nonviolent protests have made huge impacts in the past, such as during the Civil Rights Movement. Great paragraph, Carrington!
DeleteAmazing paragraph Carrington! Some solutions would be to make stricter laws about slavery. If someone were to break the laws then the person would have a bad punishment. Another solution is to set up organizations to help get rid of slavery!
DeleteObesity, the quality or condition of being obese. Did you know that 69.2% of Americans are overweight? That’s more than two thirds! One reason that this problem exists, believe it or not, is your own choices. Think about it; would you rather eat a fresh out of the oven cookie, or a crisp piece of broccoli. What about a juicy McDonalds Big Mac with those salty fries, or some home cooked chicken. Chances are you picked the less healthy option. McDonald's opened up in the 1950’s and since then obesity rates have skyrocketed. Before the 1950’s only 10% of adults were overweight. Also in the 1980’s only 7% of children were obese. Since the 1950’s, dinner plate sizes have increased 23%. This means that we are eating more and don't plan to stop! So next time you pick up that sixth cookie, or pull into McDonald’s; think again.
ReplyDeleteOne solution is that people need to get into better eating and exercise habits. This will only work if people comply, and if healthy habits are enforced in school and the work place. Great paragraph, Ashlee!
DeleteA solution that has already been attempted is the nutrition pyramid that showed how much of a balance of food you should have on your plate everyday. Another solution I can think of is if Congress passed a law that all foods sold in fast food restaurants can have a maximum of a particular number of calories. Good job Ashlee!
DeleteA solution I propose is to make more of an emphasis on eating healthy. An example is how our school says to eat healthy, but also sells cookies and chips. This way with more of an emphasis people are more likely to eat healthier
DeleteA solution could be to make it healthier. They could sell less junk food. They could have more sallied choses.
DeleteOne solution that already has been attempted is kind of what Patrick said. Obama tried to make the school lunches healthier and he did but he didn't make really any dramatic differences. I guess it was kind of a failure.
DeleteRacism has been a long standing problem throughout history. Racism is the discrimination by one's race to another in the belief that there own race is superior to the other race. In the mid 1800’s a group called the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) expressed prejudice toward African Americans by beating them and killing them in the belief that the white race was supreme over all. In the 1900’s many African Americans moved to the north in a time called the Great Migration. This was because the chances were larger in the North than facing prejudice in the south. When they arrived in the north they faced discrimination from white northerners because they were taking jobs from them. The whites thought that they were superior and that they should have the right to have a job over African Americans. The whites were upset that they even lynched two men. These are only a few times in history that racism has occurred and there are many more that we can prevent.
ReplyDeleteI think one solution would be to stop any action that is informal from being taken. This would stop any riots/protests on this topic that could start any other riots/protests out of rage. But this would allow executive actions to be taken that could help solve this problem in the long run.
DeleteI believe that a method to reduce racism in this world is to encourage races to mix. By this I mean that if people of different races learn to understand each other's cultures and differences, they will become more accepting. We should push for interracial communities around the world.
DeleteIts horrible that racism exists, because it is not right at all. I think that a good solution would be is to take action against it. If you see someone getting treated unfairly because of their color, step up and defend them. No one should be treated bad because of their color.
DeleteI think racism is a very serious problem that exists within all races. I think a possible solution for this problem would be to take more serious legal action against acts of racism.
DeletePratul, racism is a cancer that covers our world. I know that sounds harsh, but it's true. A solution to this is combatting racial groups such as the KKK or Neo-Nazis. Things like counter-terrorism units could be tasked with taking out groups of hate and racism. Or, we could try having peace talks with these people to try and show them that the world isn't one-sided. We need to improve our society.
DeleteClothing. Something we wear everyday of our lives, but where does it come from? Most sewing shops and manufacturing buildings are sweatshops. You’ve probably heard the term before. To refresh your mind, a sweatshop is an employer/company that violates more than one federal/state labor law for minimum wage, overtime, child labor, safety, and health. These sweatshops have horrible working conditions. Sweatshop workers work 20 hours a day on occasion, and the money they make doesn’t feed and clothe their families. These workers are forced to take pregnancy tests and birth control pills because there companies don’t want to pay for maternity leave. The rights for these workers are violated. For example the abolition of child labor, the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, and the elimination of forced and compulsory labor are all violates. The sad thing is that no company is held accountable. These sweatshops do exist. Internationally and in the U.S., 50% of sewing shops are sweatshops. In 2000, more than ½ of the 22,000 sewing shops in the U.S. violated minimum wage and overtime laws. 75% violated health and safety laws. Sweatshops are an immense societal problem that we need to end.
ReplyDeleteSince workers in sweatshops cannot care for their families, people should start more organizations to give families food and clothing.
DeleteA solution I can think of currently is counter-terrorism/insurgency units within Police or Military units that could possibly crack down on sweatshops and illegal labor- after that a country (the US) could help get those families up onto their feet. Great paragraph, though!
DeleteOne way to help fix this could be to have inspectors monitor the conditions of the manufacturing buildings to make sure that the workers' rights aren't being violated.
DeleteOne solution that may work is doing like a donation to go help these families out like a world wide decision could help it also the president could donate also and help.
DeleteGreat paragraph Sydney! A solution for this problem is to make stricter laws that set standards for the sweatshops. Some of the laws should be to raise the amount of pay, lower the amount of hours people work etc...
DeleteGender inequality has been a problem throughout history. Women have had to fight for the right to vote, the right to become President Primary and the right to hold a position in the government and Congress. World wide, the ratio of women representation in legislatures is 4:1. Some religions believe that the woman’s role in society is staying at home and obeying her husband. In many countries, it is dangerous for women to go out alone and it is estimated that about 6 million women go missing every year. In middle-skill occupations, women earn 66% of the pay that men earn while doing the same job. The national gender pay gap is currently at 16%, and it has ranged between 15%-19% in the last two decades. Everyone should have equal rights and representation without having to fight for it.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job Elina! Women in the past have protested for the rights they wanted. An example of this is Susan B. Anthony. She protested for her right to vote.
DeleteA solution to this problem is trying to get women more involved in science, math and technology fields. It's a stereotype that girls can't be athletic, good at math, or something as important as a lawyer or scientist. If we got young girls interested in the STEM fields, it might make them more confident to grow up and do what they want to do, not what society tells them to do.
DeleteGood job! To me, if the pay gap was filled and gender equality was established, there would be another roaring twenties. There would be a higher economy, higher wage, and less work hours.
DeleteCorruption is a horrendous problem then darkens the earth with its claws hate and sinister. Corruption is the dishonest and abused use of power of a high ranking official that gains from other’s losses, usually found in the form of bribery. For example in 1985 Iran sent a secret request to buy weapons. President Reagan approved, for he needed the funding to support the contras in Nicaragua, for the Boland Amendment of 1982 stopped all CIA and departments of Defence operations in Nicaragua. Before the deal was discovered in March 4th, 1987 over 1,500 missiles were sold. Another scandal was the infamous Watergate. President Nixon payed men to rob the Democratic National Committee by wiretapping and stealing secret documents. This was so re-election was easier, but eventually the deliberate robbery was discovered and Nixon tried to cover it up with hundreds of thousand of dollars. There are a lot more examples but I need to keep this in one paragraph so I have to end it short. But as you can see corruption is a real problem that is abasing society from the inside out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in the fact that corruption is a serious problem. We could deploy smarter technology in order to keep people from plotting corrupt acts.
DeleteCorruption is a very big problem one solution i think that may help is keeping track on certain things like we could have anonymous come help us with technology and secrets that may be happening. The verbal communication may be tough but there has to be a solution.
DeleteOne solution I can think of for corruption: not letting businessmen into office. Look at Trump currently, big businessman and could possibly be in bed with the Russian government and is also funneling funds into his own pocket!
DeleteYellow journalism (fake news) was and is still a problem. It has been going on for a very long time. It's been easier to tell people the fake news because of social media. Yellow journalism is everywhere; on newspapers, social media and you can hear fake news from other people. For example in the 2016 election, All of the candidates posted something about the election on social media so they could so they could get more people to vote for them. At the same time lots of people took advantage of people going on the internet and started to make fake news articles. The candidates used fake news to make people think bad about other candidates. #pizzagate was a fake news story. It was a theory that the New York state police department raided Hillary Clinton's property, and a website called “Conservative Daily Post” falsely stated that the Bureau of Investigation confirmed this. Another example from the election is that President Obama and Hillary Clinton had both promised amnesty to undocumented immigrants who vote on the Democratic side, but that never happened. Fake news can change how people think about other people and can even start wars; The Spanish-American war. Fake news is spreading faster than ever because more and more people get some sort of social media. If fake news takes over social media, no one will know the truth about what is happening.
ReplyDeleteI agree entirely, Robert; fake news is still a problem and will be for a long time. News may be considered untrue if unable to be confirmed or has been confirmed but is incorrect compared to reliable sources. Next time you go to look at news articles online or in a paper, check the sources for falsity.
DeleteRobert, I agree that fake news is a huge problem in our society. News can be called fake when it is not proven. One way to prevent this is to make sure that the site has reliable sources.
DeleteWe could cut down on the amount of fake news by only allowing certain news channels or people to report the news. We could do this by forcing all news channels to get a mandatory license that says they are a reliable source. This will make it harder to report news that isn't true.
DeleteTerrorism in the twenty-first century goes by the name Al Qaeda or ISIS, but those are only the most recent. It has existed far before most people think. Since the first century A.D., terrorists have plagued the earth. They have existed as the Zealots, Jewish extremists who murdered Roman supporters in broad daylight. They existed as the Hashashins, drug-influenced fanatics who wanted to make everyone Ismailia. Terrorists even existed in the form of the French government in the Reign of Terror, in which over forty thousand French citizens were killed. Now, Al Qaeda and ISIS terrorize the world, 9/11 and the attacks in Paris being just two examples. Terrorism has no single definition. There are many different interpretations, but it all boils down to this: terrorism doesn’t aim to just kill or destroy. Their true objective is to change how society works through the use of terror and fear.
ReplyDeleteFirst off awesome paragraph! Second, as a military historian I do know, as do others, that some solutions such as Counter-Terrorism Task Forces have already been attempted and are being attempted. Things such as 1-SFOD-D (Delta Force) from the US Army is devoted to Counter-Terrorism and Insurgency Operations. This elite unit was formed in the 80s solely to combat Terrorism. However it wasn't enough, and well we all know about Afghanistan and Iraq and how 'successful' those wars were.
DeleteOne solution that might lead to less terrorism is to educate more people. When people are educated they understand the differences in culture, religion, and human behaviors.
DeleteOne solution could be to stop the terrorists in their tracks. We can't let them just keep attacking us.
DeleteOne solution could be to have people get a background check before buying any weapons. Also, people that are coming from different countries or even states should get a background check. Great paragraph!
DeleteWorld hunger is an epidemic that has been going on for thousands of years now. Most of us Americans have grown up in a developed society for our whole lives so we don’t know what it is like to experience deciding if we can or cannot eat that day. We take a lot of our resources for granted like food, and don’t consider how much of it we are actually wasting. Currently, there are 570 million people in Asia who are starving everyday which is almost twice the population of the US. Africa is declared as the hungriest continent in the world where 23 million kids go to school hungry everyday if they even can afford school. So, obviously this shows that world hunger does still exist, in fact it is one of the biggest problems globally today. In Venezuela, they are experiencing a big hunger crisis. The main export there is crude oil which is the main revenue for the Venezuelan economy. However, over the past few years the price of crude oil has dropped tremendously causing the stability of the economy to dramatically decrease. The price on groceries is skyrocketing while the numbers go down. People are waiting in long lines just to get see if there is any food left for them. 93.3% of families say that there income does not support for the cost of food and that they have to resort to eating cheap foods like potatoes. Overall, world hunger is still a major problem today and we need to work even harder to trying to end it.
ReplyDeleteA solution to this is building some homeless shelters this will provide a lot of things such as jobs for the homeless, food, drinks and shelter. This is may be a lot of money but we need to save life's so building this will help us succeed and will also give good vibes to the president. Good topic to research!
DeleteA solution to solve this problem could be sending over food to areas where people are starving. Prepackaged foods like canned goods could be sent over to provide food for many people.
DeleteI think that one solution to this problem would be to provide a new way of income for the families that don't have enough money for food and other things. If we could give them a source of income they will be able to get food themselves.
DeleteA good solution to this problem would be to send supplies over to countries with issues like poverty and famine so that they can build buildings that use a renewable energy source like solar power to regulate the climate and temperature so that they can grow their own food. Also to help this project we could request that there would be free education and that people wouldn't have to pay for as many things like food and other necessary things that are needed for people to survive.
DeleteGender inequality is a widespread problem in our society today. Every day, women are treated unequally (or inferior) to men. Gender inequality can occur in many forms, including limited education for females, workplace inequality, lack of representation in government, etc. In other countries around the world, barriers have been formed preventing females from accessing higher education. Worldwide, approximately 61 million girls who are of age to be in primary or lower secondary school don’t have access to sufficient education. Females consist of nearly two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people, possibly because of lack of educational opportunities. In the workplace, on average, women are paid 79 cents for every dollar that men are paid. All people, not just women, would benefit from gender equality. It is estimated that there is a twenty five percent productivity loss due to societal limitations on what women are allowed to do. By achieving sustainable gender equality, the world could be so much better.
ReplyDeleteMost cultures that still have major gender inequality are poorer and more rural cultures. These cultures, some being untouched for hundreds of years, are fine with or without gender equality. Cultures like the mixed boiling pot of Europe and North America, have to have gender equality due to the sheer amount of work that needs to be done. So most of the developed countries may need to start thinking about equal pay and equal education.
DeleteI think a possible solution to gender inequality is to change what men see or expect a woman to do; most men these days might see a woman as a housewife, a gold digger, or someone who isn't independent and can't do anything without the support of men. If women join together to change the social image of women, like by focusing on women in power, (ie; Michelle Obama or Angela Merkel) woman can be viewed as powerful and capable. This would change the aspect of society on women, and hopefully, stop the inferior treatment of women.
DeleteSome people around the world just think the men are more superior to women and people think that women can't do certain tasks that men do. I think the places that think this should change there ways and make laws that make men and women equal. An example is equal payment of women and men, if a man works at the same job that the woman does, sometimes the woman gets paid less than the man and we this is why we should make laws to make men and women equal because same work and same pay.
DeleteGender inequality is a big issue and should be ended. I think a good start to ending gender inequality is to start providing more educational opportunities for women.
DeleteMore than 80% percent of adults are exposed to some sort of news media everyday. Our lives are affected by the news media. New media stirs our emotions and focuses on reporting on things that have happened recently that will resonate well with their viewers. Sometimes these mass media companies fall off track and “tweak” the details of a story, forgetting their important societal role to inform the public about what is going on in our world so that they can make informed decisions. This is called “Media Dishonesty”, a term coined by the current political administration. Though we are only now hearing more and more about how news outlets aren’t always telling the full truth, this has been going on since the Yellow Journalism of the late 1800’s. Yellow journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that emphasized sensationalism over facts. During its peak in the late 19th century it was one of many factors that helped push the United States and The Spanish into battle in Cuba and the Philippines, leading to the acquisition of overseas territory by the United States. It is difficult to solve this issue as there are very few rules in US for reporters because of First Amendment. Congress makes no rules to restrict freedom of press and The Government cannot control what reporters write or say. But we (the Civilians who read the news) can do our part. Consider the source of a story and make sure the website doesn’t have a history of writing bogus things. Read beyond the provocative headlines reporters publish and see what the story is actually about. Find multiple stories about the same event so you can see all sides of the stories. If we know what is actually going on, we can all work together to make the world a better place to live in.
ReplyDeleteI think that a good solution for this issue would be to have people from all sides of the story to proof read it and make it more accurate.
DeleteI suggest that an example of a solution would be to mark websites with inaccurate information. This could be passively performed by well known search engines such as google; where websites with less bias information appear above those that do. Though this would not get RID of slightly bias sites, it would surely persuade the audience to stay away from these types of sites.
DeleteI think one solution would be to have everything checked over by groups of people before being published in the paper or online. For example, if it was an event, a group of witnesses could read over the news articles to make sure everything in it was accurate. And if something seems false or inaccurate, the information should be restricted or re-written.
DeleteWell, some news agencies can't make money unless the story sounds interesting. Witnesses won't help because those witnesses might be fake and might be paid to make and say said quote. But there is a way to tell true from false. Check a great source like BBC or CNN and then compare to the questioned one. If they are very different, you have yellow journalism.
DeleteGlobal warming is the overall increase in global temperature over time. Right now global warming is a huge threat to humanity. In just the last century, sea level has risen about 8 inches. The scary part is: the rate that the sea level is rising, based on the past two decades, is double that of the last century. Another fact is that because of the industrial revolution’s start to new technology; we now have twice the co2 in the atmosphere that we did 50 years ago, and the 1 degree celsius average temperature increase starting from 50 years ago just proves it.
ReplyDeleteI think factories could try limiting the amount of stuff they pollute because that is affecting global warming. Also, pollution from cars and even people is affecting global warming and the sea level.
DeleteOne way to prevent global warming is by insulating our homes, preventing heat from escaping. Another way would be to use solar panels, using the sun as renewable source. One last way would be to invest in more fuel efficient cars such as hybrids or fully electric cars.
DeleteWe can prevent more global warming by using different sources of energy such as electrical, solar power, wind energy, hydro tech, and even go back to the old roots of steam edge tech.
DeleteAnother solution for global warming would be that we pollute so much at the same time expose all of heat from homes, factories, cites and from the sun. A way we can prevent global warming to becoming even more worse is by less pollution of heat and gas and saving heat in homes, schools, cities, etc.
DeleteWhen we think of oppressing issues on society; we never think of our water. But this is a huge issue. In fact 90% of all freshwater’s on our earth is polluted; and this can lead to health issues in ecosystems as well. When we think of oil spills we can only name a few of the dozens of spills that occur nationwide. The Ixtoc I was an oil well driller stationed in the Gulf of Mexico. This was the most deadly oil spill that occurred in the 19th century. This one spill of 1,260000 gallons of oil had a cataclysmic effect on the gulf's ecosystem. More than half of this oil reached the Bay of Campeche; causing deaths to seabirds who ate the fish found there. The US had to spend approximately 100 million dollars to clean up this spill. All of this spiraling from one accident.
ReplyDeleteI think a good solution to water pollution is to enforce stricter laws on littering into the ocean. By this i'm saying that there should be stricter fines when caught littering into or around a body of water. I believe this solution would prevent more people from polluting our planet's water.
DeleteThere is a Clean Water Act that establishes basic structure of regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the US. Although I think we need something stronger to prevent water pollution.
DeleteI think a solution could be to have better boats for transporting oil. It may cost more for a better boat, but could save that company and that country a lot of money in the long run. Also if an oil spill were to occur the company that caused it should pay for it not the whole country.
DeleteOne solution I think is to first, try to get better boats that could transfer oil cautiosly. Second to enforce better laws that keep our waters clean and safe.
DeleteMy societal problem is gender inequality, which is the idea that men and women aren’t equal. Gender inequality can be proved by the wage gap between men and women, where women earn 31% less than men in the European Union. 60% of the graduates are women but they are a minority in fields like math, and engineering. This problem has always existed like in the 1950s and 1960s where men would earn a dollar for every 59-64 cents women earned for the same job. Women at the time would also have separate job listings on the paper, which would cause them to have a lower pay scale. Since they had these separate job listings the men would have higher level and higher paying jobs listed. So gender inequality has been a problem and it continues to be.
ReplyDeleteMaybe there could be labor laws put into place. This combined with more women leaders could help gender inequality in the workplace.
DeleteGood Job Shruthika.
DeleteI think we need to have more women leaders, or men leaders that will strongly advocate for Women's equality, and if not that, women need to be louder than the leaders. We also could use some labor laws against gender inequality. In my opinion, women just need to keep doing what they have been doing, they have already given themselves voting rights, and a whole bunch of other rights, women should not be born, knowing that they are not as good as men, because women can make some very good contributions to society, and we are all human, Right, Why is gender discrimination necessary?
-SlayerProof32 (Korbin_Freedman)
To fix the wage gap between men and women we could separate the managers by gender. We could have men manage men and women manage women while the men and women are still in the same workplace working together.
DeleteI also believe this is a very serious problem in society, and it has only ever seemed to grow. Let’s start with school. You said how women are usually minorities in fields such as math and engineering. Can we somehow boost them up? I think women should be just as commonly known as men, and looked at the same. Maybe we could make new laws trying to do that.
DeleteImmigration is one of the most debated and controversial issue in America and for the rest of the world. Immigration has been going on for thousands of years. Native Americans migrated from Asia to the Americas. Europeans migrated from Europe to the Americas. Today immigration is at its peak. Hispanics have been crossing the border to America and Syrian refugees have been going to Europe. As of December 2015 there were 65 million displaced people in the world. The reasons why people migrate varies. For many it's a hope for better life. For others it’s to escape war and persecution. Many people don’t want immigrants and refugees coming into their country. Other people welcome immigrants and refugees into their country. This has sparked a dispute among citizens and politicians. Immigration had been a problem and it will always be a disputed problem.
ReplyDeleteChuck, I think a solution would only work if multiple solutions are put in place along with it. The United States needs to have a strict policy when it comes to immigrants. Background checks from the country they came from is a must and while their first month or two they would need to have a close eye on them in order to keep the rest of the county safe.
DeleteI think a solution could be make people's homelands safe by eliminating the thing that threatens it. For example in the Middle East try and eliminate ISIS, and there will be no need for people to immigrate. Another solution is to be more open minded about immigrants, and not judge them right away.
Delete
DeleteI think that the only way to fix the problem of immigration is to first eliminate the causes of people wanting to immigrate,. Another option would be to have a tracking device and a camera on the immigrants for 1 year but they don't know about it and if they do anything criminal they get deported to where they came from.
I think a solution is giving immigrants who aren't in the best position at time a place to stay.If they need shelter or just somewhere to get away. I think countries should pitch in and let some of them stay for a while.
DeleteEmploying a child in an industry or business to do labor work is extremely inhumane and torturous. That is exactly what child labor is. In 1788, more than 60% of workers in textile mills of England and Scotland were children. In the 1840s, the influx of immigrants into the U.S. provided many more child workers. Children had to work in dirty places like underground coal mines. They had no time to go to school and became very ill. By 1810, 2 million school-age children in the U.S. worked 50- to 70-hour weeks.
ReplyDeleteOne big solution is Labor laws. I feel like that is the best solution. It would eliminate child labor the best.
DeleteA solution is making child labor public. If we do this, more and more people will try to stop it.
DeleteI think that we could possibly try and go on a protest to stop child labor. It could give people another outlook on how child labor affects kids. It isn't the best solution but if it could stop child labor then I think we should try it.
DeletePoaching is a societal problem that is a big part of perhaps the most urgent problem within our biosphere. The loss of biodiversity on Earth. Destroying habitats, introducing invasive species, polluting, overexploitation, and other things lead to this mass issue. But back to the subject, poaching. Poaching began in the in the middle ages in places like Great Britain. Before then everyone was allowed to hunt to provide food for themselves. But during the Medieval times only noblemen and landowners could hunt. But the peasants had very little food and illegally made snares to catch small game. Authorities made laws against and if you were caught, you were hung. Illegal gangs popped up, selling their goods through the black market. Authorities couldn’t trust citizens to turn in poachers, so by the 1830s traps and spring guns were made to stop poachers. In 1883, peasants could hunt small game on farms. Today, poachers don’t poach for food (most of the time), they poach for a trophy, or the mass amounts of money that can be earned from poaching. A typical poacher owns an expensive vehicle, night vision tech, illegal gun silencers, and military type firearms. Many animals they poach are used for Asian remedies such as medicines made from bear gall bladders. Elephant tusk ivory will go for a pretty penny, along with other animals, many endangered. New laws are trying to crack down on poachers, but the problem still remains. These illegal hunters are elusive, and just making laws won’t stop them. If we stop poaching, we can help restore our biodiversity.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we can eliminate the selling of ivory, and other things poachers hunt for, and take away the fun of it. If they get no benefit, maybe they won't want to do it anymore.
DeleteIf we dehorn some animals, we could make ivory poaching stop. Ivory poaching is a big part of poaching, and by dehorning animals like elephants, we could stop it,
DeleteWe could try to monitor the animals that could be poached so that if someone tries to poach it we could stop them. Also we could try to stop the selling and buying of ivory.
DeleteJaiden, what I think needs to happen is secret monitoring of underground black markets. Because this is where the dealing happens. The selling of ivory should be illegal in all countries and the punishment should be 20 years in jail or something along those lines.
DeleteRacism is a problem that has been around for a very long time. Even before today, examples of racial discrimination have been evident, although it’s subtle at times. But some people still live under the delusion that things are equal because of Obama being the first African American president and just the basic fact that we’re in the 21st century. That’s not how things are at all though. In 1958, which was only 59 years ago, just 4% of people were in favor of interracial marriage. Today, there is even racism in the process of finding a job. Whites with a criminal record are ½ as likely as whites without a criminal record to get a job. But African Americans with a criminal record are ⅓ as likely to get a job as African Americans without a criminal record.
ReplyDeleteI believe a good solution might be to let the world know a lot more that this is happening, if it hasn’t already. Just because its now the 21st century doesn’t mean that its gone now, because there is still a LOT of racial discrimination in the world. It’s an ancient problem at least for the US, but it still has not disappeared and we need to let the world know.
DeleteGreat job Matea! A solution that could work to solve this problem is to protest. This could cause the government to take a stand on racial discrimination.
DeleteI think that a solution that could slow down racism/ stop it could be to inform everyone about it and let everyone know these statistics.
DeleteI think if people who are experiencing the racial discrimination did something, such as writing to a higher power like a boss or government, it could decrease the chances of it happening. Maybe not all the way, but at least a little
DeletePoaching, you probably don’t think about it very much. I don’t see it in the news often, you think, so it must not be that big of an issue. That is where you are wrong. Poaching is a very big issue in our biosphere (the parts of earth that host life) today, and needs to be stopped. The extinction rate is increasing and more and more species are going extinct each year. On April 30th 2016 there was a burning of 105 tons of ivory worth $100 million and 13 tons of horns worth $67 million confiscated from poachers by the Kenyan government. This was a sign to poachers that the animals are worth more alive than dead and a sort of burial ceremony for all of the rhino and elephant casualties in the cruel business of poaching. The president of Kenya; Uhuru Kenyatta, said that this shows that these materials are worthless unless they are on animals to bring tourism and business to the kenyan economy. Not only does poaching threaten the extinction of animals, but it also threatens the stability of ecosystems.
ReplyDeleteThere have been already attempted solutions of making it so you have to have a license and can only poach a certain animal that is out of control. For example if a wild animal has gone insane and starts killing tons of other bulls, they will allow someone to poach that bull, because the one death of that bull saves the lives of multiple other bulls. This helps poaching to a small degree but this is still a huge problem and needs more solutions to reduce poaching.
DeleteAs a solution we could enforce stricter laws to stop the killing of specific animals if they are in risk of extinction.
DeletePoaching is an underground practice, you go around the law to make money. So even though there are efforts trying to stop poachers we need to try a different approach, I read something online about animals in captivity that were set to be released had their horns and tusks dyed with the ink from bank notes and it didn't harm the animals but it made the ivory worthless and unsellable.
DeleteRick, there are already laws placed against international ivory trades but that won't stop people from selling ivory. I believe there are people who safely and legally take the tusks of elephants and burn them so poachers won't be able to kill elephants for ivory. I hope these solutions help.
DeleteCorruption a huge problem that many governed society faces. The lust for fame, wealth and power has resulted in the fall of great nations as well as the commitment of many travesties. A prominent example is the watergate scandal. President Nixon wanted to get reelected, so he did some classic breaking and entering. Nixon proceeded to lie to the American people, so he would stay in office. This may seem like a relatively non-consequential example, but this seems to be being mirrored in our most recent presidential election. The same break into a democratic candidates secrets, only this time on the web and in collaboration with Russians. Corruption has changed the course of history once again, leaving us with an incompetent, inexperienced bigot leading the world. Maybe to the world's demise
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe if people work together they could get their voice heard in the government. This being said people could get the truth from government officials. Perhaps one day the government won't be corrupt.
DeletePeople aren't going to be able to stop corruption if they are not educated on it. Many people don't understand the different kinds of corruption, so they can't respond in a powerful way. I believe that we need to educate people on corruption so they can respond in a smart way.
DeleteI think that governments across the world can not be corrupt one day, the only way I can think to do this is if they stop lieing, if they are not in power it would be better for everyone.
DeleteCorruption is generally because of someone in power with a personal want that makes them commit these unethical actions. If the person in power has an eye tightly kept on them by others they will not be able to do any unethical or dishonest things.
DeleteGender inequality is a societal problem today and has been for many years. Men are seen as a superior to women. For example women products cost 7% more than men's. These products include razors, bike helmets and socks. The funny thing is when this is brought up to attention, it is marked as a system error. This will happen in about 42% of stores. Not only that but women make 81% of what men make. So how is that fair that women products cost more but get paid less? It’s not and this needs to be fixed.
ReplyDeleteKendall i completely agree with your point and see what your trying to write but as far as solutions go i have none for you that seem rational because in most cases people raise the cost of their products and and change the amount they pay their employees due to their own personal opinions about women and we can't just tell someone how to run their own business that's causes a whole nother problem
DeleteYes, I agree with you Kendall. I believe that there needs to be more spokespeople out there who represent and spread awareness about the unfairness of gender equality in many different aspects of life.
DeleteI completely agree. One way people could possible help stop the unequal cost of the same items is to put tighter regulations on companies for how they can price their products.
DeleteKendall I agree with you. But not fully. Not all people see men as being superior to women. All though I do agree how it is wrong that womens products cost 7% more than mens. One solution could be that we make men and women products the same price.
DeleteThere has to be some way that all genders can be equal no matter what we have to do. I believe we should start paying men and women the same for what work they do, whether that means raising women’s wage, lowering men’s wage, or a bit of both. And if that can also happen for the prices of men and women’s products, that’d be great too.
