Earlier in the year, you researched a societal problem of your choice.  You should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.

In one paragraph:

  • explain what the societal problem is, and
  • provide some proof that the problem exists (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).

  1. Overpopulation is a major societal problem. If we progress with our current rate, we will have 15 billion human beings on the planet Earth by 2075, only 63 years away but over double what we have right now. The number has been rising dramatically since 1921. The Roman Empire fell due to the amount of people. But if you were to see why the population is getting lofty, you'd see that it will not be easy to stop. Developing and developed countries need more hands to to keep the country dynamic. Then there is the miracle of medicine, which makes life unfurled, which leads to more people living. The more people are born and the longer people live, the more crowded it gets on our little rock.

    1. A solution that I can offer for overpopulation is better birth control to stop the unprepared parents or teens in the world from having to take care of a child. This might be only best if this is put into actions with others.

    2. One solution that might work to decrease the problem of overpopulation is to decrease the food consumption.

    3. One solution for overpopulation is to maybe have a special team of officials in the government to make sure that overpopulation won't have harsh effects like it has in the past. The problem isn't the growing population exactly, it is how we are not prepared to handle that many people.

    4. One possible solution is to have more scientists looking into the problem of galactic colonization; we could put more money towards that instead of healthcare (that might lower the population a little in the meantime). Mars could be the next human habitat. We'd also need more engineers to help build the necessary materials.

  2. Trees… There our everything. They are keeping us alive but not for long if we keep cutting them down or deforestating them. Forests cover 33% of the earth and any forest is in danger of being destroyed. The whole entire used to almost be completely covered in trees but not anymore. Deforestation can have a negative impact on the environment. The most dramatic impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests The Top 3 countries affected by deforestation Honduras the philippines and nigeria. Not all deforestation is intentional. Some of this is caused by a combination of human and natural factors like wildfires and subsequent overgrazing, which may prevent the growth of young trees. There are a lot of solutions to ending this.

    1. Great paragraph!, I think a solution to your problem could be, is to limit the amount of trees humans are allowed to cut down each year.

    2. One solution that has been loosely enforced in the past is that, every time you cut down a tree, plant another one. If this is more strictly enforced, then maybe the future of forests isn't going to be doomed after all. Great paragraph!

    3. A solution could be to ban the destruction of a whole forest. Many times when companies cut down trees they take the whole forest with them. We could try enforcing laws prohibiting the ruination of forests.

      Delete
    4. A solution could be fining companies a certain amount per tree cut down. If the amount is high enough, than that will be enough to discourage companies not to cut down trees. As for the companies that cut down trees, we could use the fine to plant trees.

  3. It’s the 21st century, you would assume that men and women are paid equally. But that assumption is wrong, women are payed sixty-six cents to every dollar made by men. The glass ceiling effect, which pays a huge part in this problem, is women are unable to break through senior positions to earn more money or take on high positions. Job discrimination takes part as well, women are paid less for either doing the same or more amount of work. But when women dominate a work force ( such as nursing) , the industry turns into “female jobs”. This is because the jobs seem easier or more “fit” for women to do. There are many more reasons why women are paid less, but it’s the 21st century people, it’s time for change.

    1. We could pass laws that balance the pay of men and women more equally. We could give more jobs to women as well so that they have a larger amount of workers to balance the gap, but people might be unhappy about that.

    2. THere are lots of solutions that are taking place right now. For example, many women have been going on strike and protesting for their rights. Many solutions have taken place in the past as well, such as the women who protested for their right to vote (and they got it).

    3. One solution I believe might have a positive effect is there could maybe be a few-month period where men are not allowed to work. This way women would be able to prove to men and the rest of the world that they are just as strong and capable as men.

    4. On solution that I think could help after reading your post is, that laws could be passed were companies and employers are required to hire the same amount of men and women for a job. I think this could help both genders respect each other in the workplace since they both have a fair chance at succeeding at their job.

  4. In dehli, India, Kids stopped going to school because the air pollution was so bad. This happened because so many people were getting sick and developing terrible health problems. Some animals even choked to death. These are the things that we need to prevent. We’re waiting too long to start fixing our problems, and they’re just getting worse. Recycle. This is one very simple solution to some of our major world problems, but people aren’t doing it. No matter how bad things get people still continue to ignore it even though it could resolve a lot.

    1. One solution that could help air pollution is trying to reduce emissions produced by factories. This could be carried out with laws that limit emissions and using clean energy sources.

      Delete
    2. There are many organizations to help people recycle or pick up garbage on the ground. If people come together and work to get rid of air pollution by recycling or other ways to help the Earth, we might not have people developing poor health conditions.

      Delete
    3. I think another solution to stop air pollution and to keep kids safe is that if to try to reduce the number of hours of factory work and the amount of driving, this could possibly make the air a little safer. We could also try to take a few days from driving and a few days from factory work to keep the air clean.

      Delete
    4. To solve this problem we could do something like they are doing at Exxon Mobile called carbon capturing where they turn carbon molecules into energy. Just like that any pollution that is spread from factories could be transformed into energy through a process some what different from that. This will help us make energy and keep our world pollution free.

  5. Gender inequality has existed since the beginning of the human race, and it still exists today. In the 18th and 19th centuries, men completed farming and labor work, while women took care of domestic tasks. People often assumed that women couldn’t handle doing anything outside the home. They couldn’t work, couldn’t vote, couldn’t participate in politics, and their only duty was to raise children. Gender inequality may not be the same today as it was back then, but it most certainly still exists. In a survey of college students, 42% of women believed that their gender would have no impact on their career progression, while 72% of men believed the same thing. Also, despite many laws that prohibit discrimination between genders in the workplace, women are still getting paid less than men. For every $1.00 a man get payed at work, a woman gets payed $0.80 or less.

    1. One solution is to make it illegal to pay women less if they are in the same position as men. So pay the same amount of money no matter which gender the worker is.

    2. Another solution to gender inequality is to only hire based on ability and elligibility of the résumé, instead of having face-to-face interviews, where people can be subject to lookism. Obiously this solution has lots of loopholes, where people can cheat, but we all have to work together and be honest. If someone is found not to be honest, they will have adequete consequences.

  6. Could you imagine going to bed hungry every night? Hunger is a serious problem. In 2008, there was a global economic downturn because food prices spiked around the world which caused an extreme world hunger in 2010. 168 suture banks stored enough food to feed 350,000 people for only a month. In Mongolia, they had a harsh winter in 2010 which caused all of the crops to die and people were left hungry. Hundreds of thousands were killed. From 2014-2016, 233 million people in Africa were hungry. Even today there are over 37 million people hungry. Also, 1 out of 7 people do not have enough food. It is estimated that the world population in 2050 will be 12.5 billion people and there won’t be enough food to feed everyone. With more people being born and living longer, it is causing us to have less food.

Wow, this is such a horrible problem that was presented so elegantly and gracefully, and his abhorrent problem that scares this earth can be remedied with the solutions of less government corruption and less famine and disease. This can help tremendously, for corruption causes the common citizen to starve while high ranking officials thrive, and this can be achieved with education; the next generation needs to learn the injustice and ways of the government. Famine can be stopped with new disease center and government funded companies that cure crop destruction; this is a truly sorrowful problem.

  7. From the Holocaust, to the United States v. Windsor case in 2013, and everything before, in between and after, members of the LGBT community have had quite a hard time. Back in the Holocaust, members of this community were forced to wear a pink triangle on their jacket. While they didn’t have quite as hard of a time as the Jews, there was still discrimination. Homosexual couples have gone to court quite a few times. Namely the Lawrence v Texas case in 2003, and the United States v Windsor case in 2013. Transgenders have had a big part in the news within the past few years, with the debate about what bathrooms they can or can’t use. We need to let these people be. It’s not their fault they are what they are. We need to all just accept that.

  8. My topic is Deforestation. Deforestation is the big issue of large quantities of trees being cut down each year. Trees are like the Earth’s lungs without them Earth and every species on earth will die out. Since 1980 forests have lost over 772,000 square miles. Many animals and cultures have died because their habitats and territory is being cut down which also decreases the biodiversity all over the world. Brazil lossed 6,000 square miles of trees each year due to deforestation. It is possible that the world's remaining forests will be cut down by the end of 2030 if deforestation keeps increasing at it’s current rate.

  9. Our society has many problems. One problem is dogs; To be specific purebred dogs. We have bred dogs to what humans find cute, well behaved and appealing, but what people don’t pay attention to is that we are hurting these dogs. It is proven that keeping anything bred within too tight of a bloodline is dangerous and can lead to the dog, and the dogs puppies to have many genetic issues. Over the years purebred dogs have started to develop problems with their bone structure and other parts of their body. Mutts on the other hand are much better off, they were not bred in a close blood line and the result was much less problems. Examples of this existing are everywhere, the worse example is the bulldog. The bulldog used to be a sturdy, fit, energetic dog breed, but that was in the 1850s. Today the bulldog has bandy legs, a large head, a flattened muzzle, and the weight of its own skin hurts it. The bulldog constantly lives in pain because it can’t handle its own weight, it needs assistance for breeding, and it can't swim in a pool. A test was done, taking note of disorders of different dogs that came into a vet. The results was in mutts, one disorder was found, and 4% of the mutts had it, and for purebreds 10 disorders were found, and 42% of the purebreds had one or more of those disorders. Dog inbreeding may not affect how long the human race will survive but it's a cruel thing that we have done to dogs, because purebreds have extremely high chances of getting these diseases and dying.

    1. Awesome Dan! I can think of some solutions for purebreds with disorders. It may sound harsh- but making purebreds illegal depending on the type of species. If we do that, hopefully we can stop disorders within animal species quicker. However if we keep the purebreds around and scientifically use them, we could maybe find out how to prevent purebreds from getting these disorders.

    3. The same thing happens to humans a lot of the time. Humans are born a lot of the time with genetic deformities. I feel like we shouldn't force dogs to breed but whenever dogs want to do whatever with whoever than they can, just like humans.

    4. This is a problem. I think that we should just let dogs breed themselves and not dictate their lives. Humans shouldn't be so picky that it can hurt the dog.

  10. Sexual harassment and assault are major problems in much of the world, and need to be stopped. One out of six women in the US alone have experienced or known someone who’s experienced sexual harassment, assault, or even rape, and even though its more likely to happen to women than men, it’s a problem for men too. It can damage the person’s life in more ways than one depending on the situation. They can lose their job or chance for promotion if they don’t give in to sexual favors or requests if someone like a manager or other boss was the harasser, and the victim can fear going into future social situations out of fear of getting harassed or assaulted again. In 2003 a man named Kurt Bottoms was charged for violating the Fair Employment And Housing Act and the Ralph Civil Rights Act after he stalked a female employee and sent death threats to her saying he’d kill her family if she didn’t give in to sexual requests. In the end the Fair Employment And Housing Commission awarded over 167 thousand dollars in the case to the victim that Bottoms harassed. And this is only very lightly scratching the surface of all the assault and sexual harassment cases out there, for there have been MANY more.

    1. One solution I think that could help is people more coming out. This could make the people who are nervous and scared want to come out and put a end to this by telling people. If there was ever a case where there was lieing put them in court and lie detector test. Finally if we keep coming out we will make the sexual harassers intimidated.

      Delete
    2. One possible solution to this is to help men and women in our society gain self-confidence in themselves that they are safe and that they're stronger if they have been sexually harassed and abused; shed light on the situation in order for people to realize it's a real problem and it's out there which can help get more support for victims of this and more support for movements trying to stop sexual abuse. Another solution is that we should attempt to better teach society at a young age what's right and wrong, addressing sexual harassment or abuse and straight up telling our kids that it's wrong and should never be carried out.

      Delete
    3. A solution I can offer could be to create groups where people can talk about their personal experiences of facing sexual harassment. Some people may be scared to come out about being sexually harassed, but if they know that other people went through the same thing, they'll be more willing to tell. Creating groups could help people come out about being sexually harassed, and they can help find solutions.

  11. Gender Inequality is a huge societal problem! Only 4 out of over 135 nations have reached gender equality. Females are not valued in the Chinese society. In China there are 32 million more boys than girls under the age of 20. Females are thought to be weaker, more expensive, less intelligent than men. Women earn about an average 77-80% of what men earn for doing the same work, for the same amount of time. Women generally earn 79 cents for every dollar men earn. The smallest pay gap is in New York where women are paid 89% of what men make. The largest pay gap is in Wyoming where women are paid 64% of what men make. About 62 million girls are denied education in the world. Women are forbidden to drive in Saudi Arabia. They have to rely on their fathers or husbands to take them places.

    2. Gender inequality definitely needs to be stopped. A way to try and solve a part of this problem is to make men and women's pay equal. Women's pay needs to be brought up to what men get paid. Women can do the jobs men do equally as good, and a lot of the times better than the men.

    3. Julianne, I absolutely agree with your stance and we need to have women stick up for themselves. One way we can make this better is by creating organizations to help bring women to the same equilibrium as men. 4. Julianne, I agree that gender inequality is an ongoing problem that needs to be solved. We should make gender inequality part of education and training. 12. Endangered or threatened animals is a societal problem. If one species goes extinct it can affect an entire ecosystem and food chain. Many species go extinct or endangered for different reasons the main reason animals are threatened is because of humans. Humans may kill or harm the species environment for their own benefit, for example when white settlers came to america they discovered the bison they killed millions trying to farm them for food. The bison’s population used to be 20 million now because of human interaction that number has dropped to 20 thousand. However not all animals are killed for food, elephants are killed for their ivory tusks the people how have the tusks sell them for a large amount of money. Ivory was banned on international trade in 1989. We can do something about this we can protest for animals rights, set stricter laws on animal abuse, hunting and more.

    1. I think that a solution would be to regulate hunting quantities. One of the contributors to endangered species are overhunting and poaching. If species are placed on reserved lists, this would regulate the amount of one type of species being hunted, and reduce the likeliness of extinction.

      Delete
    2. I believe that a way to stop poachers or hunters is to possibly set up a military to keep watch on places like the savanna or rain forests. By doing this we could scare the poachers by actually proving we would do something if they were caught like torture or making them do harsh things.

      Delete
    3. One solution that is in the process of being attempted is TIP (Turn in Poachers) stations. These are a way for people to alert authorities if they see poaching taking place so that the appropriate punishments can be carried out. They're almost everywhere, so hopefully they'll help out in solving the problem of poaching!

  13. Drunk driving, a real societal problem that has been shown today in many cases. It's a big tragedy, especially if you are the person in that accident. This issue has been around since 1897. The first arrest, a taxidriver. His name was George Smith, it happened in London and he was sentenced with 25 shillings. This is what made New York try and prevent this from happening and the creation of the Breathalyzer. The Breathalyzer was a device to determine how much alcohol is in a human's bloodstream. Also, depending on how much alcohol was in their blood stream determined how long they would be sentenced for. The Breathalyzer took lots of time and wasn't fully invented till 1963; it was invented by a university professor. The Drunkometer was invented in the 1930’s but it wasn't fully proofed and actually didn't work. Driving while intoxicated (DWI) rarely leads to death, but when they do many people are aware and it becomes a big thing. Most accident involve teens, they think they are really funny until they get caught or something big happens. In February 2006 a girl named Jessica Rasdall killed her best friend. They were both drunk and her best friend sat in the passenger seat. Her best friend's name was Laura Ann Gorman, it was a story of love and loss. Jessica Rasdall stated “I wish I could have been the one to die that night.” DWI rates are actually growing, and sentences for DWI are actually rising as well.

But no this topic is much more than that. Hacking is a very serious problem. People can lose their money, their house or even their family (In worst case scenario) because of hackers. Hackers do this by stealing people's credit card numbers and SSN codes to take their information. This is called identity theft. Another way hackers take people's identity is by pretending to be someone else, another computer, or another website and erase people's filed information. One person gets their identity stolen every thirty seconds. Are you going to be one of those people?

    1. I think if people have really good security they could prevent themselves from being hacked. Also, we could all try to keep our information as secret as possible, we can do that by not telling anyone we don't know our information. That would only work if we had really good security because people use websites online to buy stuff and sometimes the information we put on there goes to a hacker that could steal our identity from the credit card number you put in.

  16. Waste pollution is everywhere and has increased greatly since the industrial revolution. It causes many problems. 167 billion pounds of waste is very harmful and can cause many bad things to happen to life on earth and in just the 1980’s, the U.S created 400 million tons of waste. That is 800 billion pounds. Waste can cause fires, explosions, and illnesses depending on what it is. Waste is also burned causing ash that can end up in water that gets evaporated and comes down to the ground as acid rain which damages and kills wildlife. Fishmeal is made from fish and sometimes that fish is contaminated. One year we had to destroy 80,000 chickens, 50,000 turkeys, and 60,000 eggs because the fishmeal was contaminated. In some areas, waste pollution can account for 50% of the deaths of wildlife and humans. If we continue dumping waste into water and into other areas that it’s not supposed to be that number can increase to 55 maybe 60% of deaths in certain places. We don't want that.

    1. I think that waste production can be decreased if we use some of the methods of reusing materials. A lot of the materials that make up the total amount of pollution can also be composted to help reduce the amount that is just being burned or thrown away.

  17. One societal problem is abortion laws. In lots of countries abortion is illegal, and in some states there's very strict laws, like Texas. Abortion is when you terminate the pregnancy, not a human. Therefore It’s not murder. In Paraguay a 10 year old who was raped, by her stepfather was denied an abortion. This put her and the baby at harm. Many women who don’t have access to clinics have unsafe abortions. These unsafe abortions kills 47,000 women each year! So this kills the women and the baby, killing much more than a safe abortion ever would. About 25% of the world doesn't have abortion legalized where they live. If we stopped funding planned parenthood more and more teen pregnancies would happen, because they provide birth control. Abortion is a woman's choice, and everyone should have the right to choose.

    1. Julianna, I absolutely agree that abortion should be legalized, because many accidents do happen and that baby can cause many problems to the women's life. Most countries have men as leaders and don't understand the concept of having to deal with a child if it was an accident. So we need to get them to understand that it's not murder, it's terminating the pregnancy.

    2. Woman should have their own reproductive choices, so abortion should be legalized. We need to make laws that allow women to make their own choice about their pregnancy. There shouldn't be laws that don't give women their right to choose what happens with their pregnancy.

    3. I think abortion is a serious topic that needs to be taken into careful consideration. A solution that might work best when dealing with abortion is to pass a specific law around the world that allows you to have an abortion if you were sexually abused or/and if you are underage. If you are of age and/or were not sexually abused, then you should follow the rules that your country or state has about abortion.

    4. I agree with you Juliana, this is a very important topic. I think one solution would be to make abortions legal in countries where it's illegal. You could research the laws we have in America about abortion, and see how much it's affected us compared to the countries with different laws. This way you can see if laws are actually doing something.

  18. One of the biggest problems in our world today and throughout history, is war. War is a big problem that results in the loss of 137,000 of lives each year. On the 1st of September, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland creating the second world war. Three years later, on the 7th of December, Japan attacked a United States naval base resulting in the loss of 2,403 lives which led the US into the war. World War II caused an estimated 60 million deaths making it one of the deadliest wars of all time. Another example of extreme warfare was the Vietnam War lasting from 1965-1975 after Vietnam split into two halves in 1954. The first troops landed in Vietnam in 1965 and by 1868, already 36,000 US troops were dead. The Vietnam War was a war that was not won by either side and just goes to show that war is not good for either side, nor ever will be.

    1. I think a solution for war is just don't do it. If we stop war, so many lives will be saved. 137,000 lives is a lot of people dying.

    2. A solution for this problem could be to sign more diplomacies. Look, we can't stop war all together it's going to eventually break out, so the best choice is to get countries that are not are the friendliest of terms to work together.

    3. A solution for this problem is to make a large effort to agree to more things. War wouldn't be so common if we started agreeing and being the bigger person. If we all agreed and made small changes to fit the needs of others, we would have 137,000 more lives each year.

    4. War is hard to stop; people will always find more ways to start them, like for territory. A possible solution could be to make more alliances and propose more treaties.

  19. In the last year the temperature has been rising dramatically. From greenhouse gases and the amount of carbon monoxide we put in the air. As the temperature gets hotter, the glacier will start to melt. The water level could rise dramatically. In next 50 years. Flooding places like Boston, New York City and other places around the cost. This is also the cuse of more extreme weather. The higher risk for floods, wildfires, droughts, tornados and hurricanes. We could see a hurricane two times bigger than hurricane katrina, as the water starts to get warmer. It will make hurricanes more powerful. The storm surge would be very powerful two. This could affect millions of people in the future. The wildfires would be more likely because of the air being so dry. One lightning strike could spark a big wildfire, burning thousands of acres of land. There will also be fewer winners. In 1930s there was the dust bowl. During the Dust Bowl was a big drought. Eruption killed soil making the soil more likely to blow in the wind. When strong winds came it picked up a lot of soil. It became a black cloud of dust. Humans are really affect our planet. As the earth gets hotter the more storms. In the future it could be catastrophic. The ice caps are slowly melting, due to climate change. As the temp starts to go up. The ice/glaciers start to melt. It would have a big impact on the earth.

    1. World nations are working on the greenhouse gas issue, as for the melting glaciers, maybe we could put some of it into a water tank and send it to mars. I say this because we are thinking about sending people to mars and the people will need a lot of water if they are going to survive.

    2. One solution that can help this problem might be to find a way to make Ozone because this is what helps to protect the sun's ultraviolet rays from reaching the Earth

    3. A way to stop ice or glaciers from melting would be to reduce our carbon dioxide emmision, becuase it is essentially what's increasing the heat of the Earth. We can all plant trees, buy electric cars, walk more, and use public transpot. This will take time, but in the future, we can atleast control the damage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as the carbon dioxide itself. Great paragraph Jennifer!

  20. Mining is an action with both beneficial and dastardly consequences. The prospect of getting the most valuable(and admittedly most beautiful) minerals and gems and walking around wearing them on jewelry is a wonderful thought. But The dangers of mining have been apparent for well over a century as even in the 1800’s the fear becoming ill or having a cave capsize on top of you was always a worry. Nowadays mining take place in more impoverished countries whose natural resources only were discovered a few years before digging starts.Because of this corporation's force the people of that country to get the minerals out from under the ground. This can cause the workers to be stuck down by illness cause by the machines they're using or be killed due to an accident from not being able to see what's around them . Mining also has a negative effect of the environment as it weakens the topsoil and to even begin the mining process you need to destroy a big chunk of forest to do so.

    1. A solution I can offer based on research and thinking could be closing unregulated mines. Unregulated mines have the potential to release harmful substances into the air, water, and soil. By closing unregulated mines, we could reduce the amount of pollution and danger produced by mining.

      Delete
    2. A solution I can offer based on research and thinking is having laws that do not allow the weak or ill to work in the mining industry. This way, not so many people would die or get sick from the machines they were working with.

      Delete
    3. One solution I came to after researching is to supply smaller countries with medicine. If larger countries, like America, supplied smaller countries, like Peru, then they could still mine with healthier people. Then we could still buy and sell minerals.

    4. A solution could be that companies have to apply to make mines to the country of question. This would make it so the country's government would be involved, thus minimizing the loss of life and forest.

  21. War
    noun
    1.
a conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation; warfare, as by land, sea, or air.

Is war a modern issue? Many of you would say “No, the US isn’t at war with anyone!” but that’s because you don’t know the truth about war with the US, or with any other country in the world. Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, World War I and II, all of these happened in the “modern day,” Think about it, Vietnam was in the 70’s, Korea was the 50’s and Afghanistan and Iraq were just a year or two ago. Now you must be wondering “But I thought all those wars were over,” Well you’d be wrong about two of them, Iraq and Afghanistan.
There’s no question that the US stopped saying those wars were still going on because in 2014 President Obama pulled out the last remaining combat troops from Afghanistan, and ordered the Operation Enduring Freedom to a close. But there’s a catch! Just because Enduring Freedom, the official name for the war in Afghanistan and other Taliban/Al-Qaeda involved areas. So is the US really at war? Technically no, Congress hasn’t declared a state of war- however we are still in a combat phase. Vietnam was the same way, we don’t call Vietnam a war we call it a conflict due to the fact that Congress didn’t declare war. But is +50,000 deaths a conflict or a war. Afghanistan and Iraq were not wars, they were conflicts to a degree. Since Congress didn’t declare war on Afghanistan or Iraq, those aren’t technically wars! Crazy right? You keep thinking we aren’t at war when in reality we are.

    1. I think that making a committee or group of people, one from each country could be a solution. If everyone met once a month to discuss the problems and frustrations they were dealing with, we could possibly solve some issues. This way we could hopefully work out our differences and look towards the future.

    2. I think war is horrible. If each leader of each nation made compromises with each other about their issues and ways to solve them, then no war would be fought. If a leader of a country is too childish or has a bad reputation, then they should be taken out of office so that a new leader can take over and make compromises with other countries so that war is avoided.

    3. War is a painful, but necessary process. We could solve this problem by being more careful we who we make deals with and who we trust. This could make us less susceptible to war.

  22. Nuclear weaponry has existed ever since late WWII. It was used to end the war with Japan. But now it threatens all of earth. Nuclear Winter. If nuclear war broke out, living organisms would die everywhere. Whether it was ground zero or five miles away; everything in the blast will die. Plants, animals, food, and shelter. All things needed to survive. Herbivores would have nothing to eat. Then they would die. Then carnivores and omnivores would have nothing to eat. Then they would die off. Biodiversity would become nothing. Where there was grass, there is now charred earth. But from the ashes of old, will start anew. This place, I call home.

    1. One possible solution for this problem is that we could enforce laws prohibiting the use of nuclear technology. Like the Iran Nuclear Deal.

    2. Nice paragraph! One solution, although it may not be 100% probable to actually happen, is for countries to try not to be as hostile towards each other. If there's less fighting, there's less of a chance that the whole world will be damaged forever by a nuclear war.

      Delete
    3. One solution that we could use is to take away the power to create nuclear weaponry if it's getting out of hand. We wouldn't even have to worry about any threats or anyone randomly dropping a nuclear bomb. Although there would be people secretly creating these weapons, a start of this solution can help.

      Delete
    4. One solution to this problem is to stop any threats to other countries about dropping these nuclear weapons. Once the threats stop, we need to come to an agreement on when it is necessary to use nuclear weapons. Which could help from using it when not needed.

  23. Jeff. Nice solid facts. A great solution for this topic would be to keep the elephants under protection from this problem. We could have people make sure the elephants are okay at all times. This is obviously a serious problem, and I feel this could be fixed. But only if we act fast.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Poaching wont go away on its own, if we really want to save animals that are being poached then we need to protect them in animal shelters, but so they don't become reliant on humans we would have to treat them as if they were in the wild.

  26. Over immigration and illegal immigration are both very large problems in the USA. Surveys show that 640,000,000 people in other countries say they would like to move to another country permanently. Or about 12 percent of the world's population. Out of those about 150,000,000 would like to immigrate to the usa. The second most popular country for immigrants is the United Kingdom were 45,000,000 people would like to immigrate to. In recent years the USA has been letting in about 1,000,000 immigrants per year. It is argued what the most economical amount of immigrants would be to let in but very few claim it is even close to what it is now and almost no one with an economics degree or background. Many say we should have completely open borders, however immigration in those number would cause long and short term economic disaster and infrastructure disaster. Our health care systems would be overloaded and very few people would be able to get medications or medical attention, our public building and programs like schools, homeless shelters, and the DMV would not be able to keep up. Every immigrant we let in also makes unemployment rates go up as a job is not created every time we let in an immigrant. On top of all of this if we let in anyone crime rates would soar as we would have no filtering for people who committed crimes in their home countries that we could have avoided. Immigration is certainly necessary but it needs to be kept under control and it needs to be legal, Illegal immigration is an even bigger problem as millions of illegal immigrants come into the USA that we do not even know about that live here but do not pay taxes or contribute to society. However even though they don't pay any taxes they often receive federal aid and cost us money. On top of that we have no idea who they are or what they may have done in their home country. Immigration is good, but we need to know who is coming, who is going and keep it within a realistic amount.

    2. Over immigration is a big problem in our society today. The United States along with other major countries need to have stricter immigration laws, tighter border patrol, and severe background checks need to happen. Other countries also need to step up and take some immigrants because the US and I'm sure the UK are becoming way to populated and there is a limit to how many people a country can hold

      Delete
    3. This is definitely a current problem, but it is being tackled right now. Donald Trump has been working to fix this; he has been making laws regarding immigration to US and is working to build a wall (more like a fence) to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. This problem is another one sprouting from our exponentially growing human population tree.

    4. This is a wonderful paragraph that expresses the appalling problems of illegal migration, and one infamous problem that is known for obesity is the wall; this could be built on the border of mexico and have extensive background checks of the immigrants. Also, there could be a limit of immigrants from a specific country that poses threats.

  28. Jeff, poaching will be very hard to stop in this day in age. I think what the government needs to do is to secretly monitor illegal black markets because that is where most of the trade happens.Possibly we could watch the animals, or put them in a reservation.
