In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.”  As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers  to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly.   In one paragraph:

  • describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
  • offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
  • at the end, paste the url of a website from which you  did some reading about the dangers of using the  technology.

  1. One technology that we use today without considering the dangers are GMO's. Some ways that we could use GMO's more carefully is by considering safety issues a lot more instead of tying to put them out in the market at this early of a stage. We could also try giving GMO's many more different safety tests that make sure 100% that the gene that the scientists would put in the food would be safe. That is a type of technology from today that we use without considering the dangers and offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully.

    1. Jordan,
I think that no matter what we do, GMOs will still be unsafe at this early of a stage. GMOs could also kill good bacteria in the body when consumed. I think another good solution would be for the scientists to refrain from putting GMOs out on the market, until they've perfected their technology

    2. Jordan,
I completely agree with you that this is one of the many new dangerous technologies that we should take into consideration. Especially because GMOs are one of the most recent technologies, they should definitely run several tests on what chemicals are in them. I think scientists should also take the chemicals found in GMOs, and test them to see if they are harmful to our bodies. GMOs can also cause diseases like Alzheimers. So we should definitely consider some of the dangers in them a a lot more. Nice job!

    3. Jordan, you have done fantastic job explains why GMO's are a very dangerous technology. Unfortunately, GMO's are increasing the amounts of produce, so many people do not want it to be taken away from them. One way we can stop this is by growing more organic foods.

    4. Jordan,
I agree with you that GMOs are dangerous technology. Sadly lots of produce use GMOs, we might be able to stop them from using GMOs but we can grow and or buy organic food.

    5. Great job Jordan! Great paragraph! I agree that we shold use more safety test on GMO's. I think another danger is that there could be dieases that are unknown. Which is a big danger to children and adults.

  2. There are many types of technologie. Sometimes we us technologie without knowing there are dangers involved. The internet is one of type of tech that we use without know there are dangers. Some dangers are hackers that can steal your information online like when you buy something online. An easy way to avoid this is to be careful when you buy stuff online there is not much that someone can do about that but be careful when buying things online. Another example is posting personal info online like your name, age, and where you live. This has the simplest solution EVER all you need to do is not post any personal info online. The internet is great but when people use it wrong that is when you need to be careful.

    1. I agree completely with what you are saying about how buying things online and giving information online is very dangerous. One way to prevent your information from being stolen is to use a fake name or to only use trusted websites. You can also prevent credit card information from being stolen by avoiding buying things online or to have a dedicated credit card for buying things online with a low credit limit.

  3. In the book By The Waters Of Babylon John says “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.” and we can conclude that this setting took place far in the future when society collapses and this was them beginning to rebuild from nothing. One technology that we could have developed too fast are GMOs, these are Genetically Modified Organisms, these could not be proved bad for you yet and that's exactly the problem, we should have waited to see if this was safe and there have been cautions about this like some gmos put in plants have links to cancerous chemicals. So I think we should fully test this to avoid any long term problems.

    1. Dan, your stand was very clear. I understand that GMOs are bad for humans but not scientifically proven yet. We really have to be careful for what we encounter because they can be very dangerous. Great job, Dan!

    2. Nice job Dan. I agree that GMOs should have been tested more. One way to avoid these cancerous chemicals is; like you said, by testing food products more before they are released into the general public. Also, we as consumers can look at the ingredients list on products we buy and if GMOs are an ingredient; simply don't buy the product.

    3. Great paragraph. I do completely agree with you on GMOs, as they are another example of technology we have developed too quickly. More problems that are directly correlated to GMOs are organ damage and other problems involving disorders in the body. GMOs are also contaminating non GMO food through cross contamination. A possible way to solve the GMO crisis would be to temporarily ban GMOs until more tests conclude the negative effects of GMOs. Also, consumers can refuse to purchase GMO products. Although not all states require companies to label products as GMO or not, the products that say "Non GMO" could be a better solution to the uncertainty of buying GMO products. Again, good paragraph.

  4. Guns! This invention has shaped warfare since the beginning of time. In USA we hear about deaths caused by guns on daily basis. Majority of which are by civilians taking the law into their own hands and killing innocent victims. One reason for this calamity is not enough restrictions on gun ownership. The very politicians we vote for either have guns or somehow are related to gun businesses. 38% of all republicans own a firearm, democrats own 28% and finally independent own 31%. This is huge, and shows one of the many reasons our government has trouble enforcing stricter laws on guns. I believe our solution to gun control and gun violence is have authentic and strict rules. For example in order to own a gun you must be either part of the army (in- service), or police force. If a civilian requires a firearm for hunting or target practice they should leave their guns at hunting cabin after use or till next time. This plan could work if our government was willing to take the step forward. In conclusion, this past 2014 homicide rates, roughly one in every 285 Americans will be murdered in the course of their lives. Do you still feel safe being an American? www.Justfacts.com

    1. Muhib, this is very well written. A way we could prevent this is before selling a firearm people have a background check. You don't want a criminal to have a firearm.

      Delete
    2. Muhib, a way to prevent this is we should not be able to purchase guns online. We should purchase them in stores only. In stores would be safer because the people at stores can check and see if you have a license or not. In stores the people can also check and see if you have a criminal background or if you have done something bad in the past. There should be much stricter laws on owning a gun and using guns. I think with stricter laws less killings would happen. People that use guns or own a gun should be very responsible. Nice job!

    3. Muhib,I enjoyed reading your view on guns, and the dangers of them in the wrong. Background checks are important.we want to know who has a gun and if they are allowed to.It is very dangerous letting someone with the motive to harm carry a gun.I liked you facts and how you brought them to life Excellent job.

    4. Muhib, I agree with you on your solution. A lot of school shootings are due to people who just acquired a gun at the local store, or in some cases children who took their parents guns. The lack of caution when dealing with firearms is appalling, from parents just leaving guns around the house to gun fairs where you can just walk up and buy right off the rack.

    5. Muhib,
I agree with you on your given solution. I understand guns can be dangerous but not all states have the same gun laws,so I think that the states should have stricter laws on guns.

  5. One part of technology that I think is dangerous to the world today is talking to strangers online. One out of five people who talk to strangers online get kidnapped by that person they're talking to. Some people aren't who they say they are online. Someone could say they are 17 and get a picture of someone really pretty off the internet but they could really be 50 and kidnap you one way we could use this more carefully is not talking to people online that you haven't met in person and if you ever talk to someone online never give them any personal information.

    1. Talking to strangers online could lead to giving out important information. People could get hacked, or kidnapped. One solution might be to try and avoid websites that require you to give information, or maybe even using a false name and age. Nice job!

    2. Danielle, I totally agree with you. People have need to be more careful on social media; they need to stop giving personal information to complete strangers. This could lead to identity theft, stealing personal information like credit card numbers, addresses etc. People could avoid this by not talking to strangers and not giving their info to complete strangers.

      Delete
    3. This is true and shocking Danielle! My friend always calls me to give me her address when I go to her house. In the past she thought she was texting her friend and was going to meet up with her friend at the mall and it wasn't her fried, and she ended up meeting with a stranger. Lucky she ended up okay, but that was a traumatizing experience for her. It is a good idea to call before giving away information.

    4. Danielle, I agree with you on the fact that talking to strangers online is dangerous. Another solution to this problem could be to block strangers who try to talk to you online. This would prevent them from talking to you and your personal information will not be shared.

    5. Great job Danielle! Great paragraph! I agree that talking online to strangers can be a danger. Another danger of talking to people online is that you could be getting catfished or you could be getting stalked by some random person. If you were getting catfished they would ask for your money and you would give ot put because your "in love " with this person.

  6. One invention that we use today without considering the dangers of are UAV's and drones. Not just your average civilian drone, I mean Militarized drones. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are remote controlled aircraft that can be used for surveillance, life saving, and even war. Currently the United States Military has the largest arsenal of UAV's, many of them packed with weapons. The UAV can be operated from long distances and can fly for hours on end. But, did anyone ever stop and think, "What if the enemy steals the keys?" Think about it, if a single Predator Drone UAV can take out an entire village with one missile, what could a couple of them do to a major city? Maybe instead of using robots to do our killing, we should stick to manual. Because as technology got stronger, we literally built armies worth of these things. So what happens when our own toys get turned against us? There will always be human beings who will do what others cannot, those who won't turn against their country, those who will have sympathy for others, drones... There no replacement for the Soldier.

    1. Robert I agree with you, for drones are advanced pieces of equipment and should not be taken lightly. There are episodes all the time of glitches when a drone malfunctions and drops its weaponry payload on a village or even a hospital!Just because the connection between the pilot and the UAV was subsided. I think that with the invention of any kind of automation must be put on restrictions. With drones I believe the proper solution would be putting a range limit of how far they can go. Therefore we can prevent such circumstances of drones crashing or bombing innocent victims. Rather then there required target.

      Delete
    2. I completely agree with your stance on this issue. Drones are a big problem and might be too risky to use on the battlefield. If the enemy gets hold of these drones, what is stopping them from copying these drones and making more to wipe out us? We could just scrap the use of drones and stick to ground fighting. Great work, Greece has left the building!

      Delete
    3. Robert, I also agree with you about the military use of drones. What if the controller accidentally lost control and flew it into airspace of helicopters or airplanes, causing a crash that might land on military troops or worse yet civillians? If the control of the drone does get taken over by the enemy having a self destruct feature initiated by US intelligence might be a way to put the end to the problem before it goes too far.

      Delete
    4. A very interesting and well written paragraph Robert, I think that all militarized vehicles should have a person on board. Lots of toys use Remote controls and it could easily run on the same frequency as the UAV. Imagine a Innocent little 9 year old playing with her Remote control car that she had just got for her bday and not knowingly actually controlling a UAV overhead and having it shoot missiles. Wouldn't that be scary?

      Delete
    5. Robert,
You bring an excellent point about this topic. Drones are dangerous they can be used for stocking, spying etc. As a solution drones can be limited to certain people, people who don't have a criminal record.

Some ways we could use social media more safely is realize that whatever you put out there, stays out there forever. And whatever that is, you could have consequences later in life. Also, don’t share too much information. You shouldn’t show your location, where you are etc… To be safe you also should consider the future, beware of posting certain pictures, don’t share too much information and take it seriously!

  8. Recently in the news you have been hearing about lithium-ion batteries and that their exploding. You may not know it but, these batteries are in smartphones, jumbo jets and laptops. One reason all the batteries explode is because they get too hot and can't cool down quick enough. Another reason the batteries explode is because they don't have internal support. If the lithium-ion batteries had internal support then, they wouldn’t overheat and explode.

    2. Keely, I totally agree with the internal support for those batteries. Another way you can stop the batteries from exploding is to make sure your computer or phone cools down for 5 to 10 minutes so they don't heat up to the point where it explodes.

      Delete
    3. Keely, this is a unique topic that people don't usually even understand. Another way that we can solve this is increasing the public's understanding about lithium-ion batteries. A lot of people don't really understand how unsafe they really are, and if there were more ads and conversation about them, people may take more precautions and scientists could work on trying to help make them safer.

      Delete
    4. Keely, Nice paragraph and writing about a topic that lots of people don't think about or have much knowledge on. The major reason phones were exploding Is because of a manufacturing defect that Samsung had. The batteries were squished so hard that after a little while, the lithium metals reacted in a strange way and punctured the separator between the terminals causing the batteries to heat up and explode. I think this defect could have easily been prevented by testing the batteries rigorously before selling them in phones and then this would have been prevented.

      Delete
    5. That is definitely a problem; to fix this people making these products they should make better ventilation systems, and we should try to research to make better batteries that wont be at risk of blowing up. Great job Keely.

  9. These days we have to pay close attention to what we eat. The main part of it is GMOs. GMOs are genetically modified crops which can contain harmful chemicals and have had their DNA changed. We have to pay attention to test results and diseases which were found in GMO Foods. When given to test animals such as rats, pigs and sheep. Most of the animal suffered of cancer and early death. The survivors returned to their families, they had a different and/or unusual behavior. Other survivors had more complications for example pigs have turned sterile and had false pregnancies. Sheep died early while several others had major health issues such as infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, damage to major organs and gastrointestinal system. To prevent this happening to us we can stop infecting our crops with these chemicals and not eat them. Some of us think technology is the answer to our problems. But “eating knowledge too fast” has a limit. If you try to understand technology it'll benefit you. If you plan going above the limit it can affect us all mentally, physically, and socially.

This is called cyberbullying many people are bullied by complete strangers just because their facial features or shape of bodies aren't preferable enough. Children of all ages, teenagers especially commit suicide on a daily basis. And just like Mr.kavanagh said whoever is caught committing cyberbully must pay a fine of 1000.00 dollars or jail time. I believe with the proper supervision system we can help prevent this kind of inappropriate behavior on social media platforms across the globe. 12. Our future is very likely to be in danger. There is so much new technology being introduced and developed, that we often don’t take time to consider the risks with them. Texting and driving is one use of technology today that is very dangerous. Texting is a very common distraction on the road. About 11 teens die every day from texting and driving accidents! 1 in 4 car accidents in the US is caused by texting and driving. It is also six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving. According to the AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway. In 2014, there were 3,179 people killed and an estimated additional 431,000 people wounded in car crashes involving distracted drivers. What are some things we can do to help? Set a good example for others. Don’t text while on the road. If we need to text or call, pull over to a safe place before proceeding to drive. You can also help by spreading the word. Explain to your family and friends how important it is not to text and drive. Always stay safe on the road!

I strongly agree with your view on why it's wrong for a driver to text while behind the wheel.I think it's scary knowing that out of the world's 7 billion people 6 billion have access to a mobile phone. And 1.2 billion have access to a mobile vehicle. And 70% of people use a smartphone while driving this might look like big numbers to some people but this is a serious issue especially when it involves teen drivers. Who are still at the age where the have a lot of responsibilities to take on and things to be aware of.People all around the world should pay attention to the dangers of technology in this case to different types a car or mobile vehicle and a phone. If you realize it these things together can lead to trouble and if you add the fact that a teen is involved it is very dangerous no one wants to lose their life to a text.People should put the phone down and pay attention to the road because there are many lives that can be affected if the look down at that text message for 2 seconds. I think you captured the truth and main reason this is an issue and you backed it up with amazing facts great job.

    2. Carleigh, great job with your paragraph! I agree with you and I think a way we can help people not be so close to computer screens is create some sort of chair so it supports our posture and forces us to not lean in so closely. Also the computer could auto adjust the lighting based on the light levels around it so it doesn't hurt your eyes as much.

    3. Carleigh I completely agree with you and I am quite impressed with your paragraph. I also believe we are becoming a society of technology enveloped junkies. Where we could be making groundbreaking resolutions to diseases or awe-inspiring feats. We instead damage and trick our brains. My explanation blue light that is exhibited out of computers. Blue light distorts the chemicals and thought process in our brains by making the brain think it needs to stay awake. Thus the reason why many students have troubling sleeping because there eyes are fixated around their laptops, or computers all night. Instead of getting the proper rest they so desperately need. My solution a curfew I believe all computers at home or school should be equipped with a time limit that way a novice doesn't have to concern themselves with lack of sleep or unnecessary emotions such as stress, for only a adult should experience.

    4. Carleigh, I agree that computers can be bad for you. We can try limiting the amount of time spent on the computers so we can limit how much the eyes are strained. We could do this by doing activities that don't require the computer such as exercising.

    5. Carleigh, I think that you have a strong argument, because a lot of us are getting so focused sitting in front of our computer screens, and we're not realizing the effect on our health. A way to solve this is to take breaks from using your computer. We should get up once in a while to stretch, relax our eyes, and even take a nap.

  14. We use computers without considering their dangers. Cloud data isn’t secure with the laws, the laws state that a document under a cloud file not accessed in 180 days is considered abandoned and anyone can access it. Big companies can access Facebook and find out what you look like from all sides based on posts of yourself and friends. Your cookie data can allow companies and advertisement agencies can figure out what you are interested in and put those ads on the side of websites you go on. Companies looking for people to hire can find out where you go to often and send you job offers of places that are nearby. We can use computers more safely by not putting things in the cloud, vote for the Do Not Track Act.

    1. Wow, Alex that's very interesting. As I was reading this I was alarmed at how much of your information can be exposed. In addition to companies accessing your information, it seems as if individual people can access your information. If you were in a heated fight with someone, they could expose you online or try to steal your identity, easily.

    2. Alex, I completely agree with you.I was very shocked to find out that after 180 days in the cloud unused, it can be accessed by anyone. Thank you for informing me.

    4. Alexander, the information you gave me was beyond surprising. I cannot believe how easily our privacy can be broken by using Cloud Data, the technology we use almost everyday in our daily lives.

    5. You are right. Computers are a serious issue that needs to be looked upon, especially when it can access something like cloud data that isn't exactly protected. Computers can also be used to hack as well as exploit Social Media users by cyber bullying them. We can solve this issue by monitoring the use of computers for each individual person. If they are using their computers for wrong purposes, that person will be given severe consequences. Lovely paragraph Alexander.

    7. Really good Alex i agree. Computers and there cloud data are dangerous people could easily hack into them i feel like there should be a cheap company like $20 a month for `internet cloud data storage safety cause that tech support scammers are not helping.

  15. The technology that we use without considering the dangers is Social Media. People get judged, cyber bullied and threatened. They’re many teens that post a lot of their information online. For an example pictures ,DOB, and phone numbers. That's why some online sites like, Instagram, have privacy settings that can make accounts private. There kids and teens that attract predators that will access their data and sometimes get to know where they live. That's one technology that we really really need to think about and fix. Because it's for the safety of our kids and for a better future.

    1. Christal, I completely agree that we need to be cautious about what we put out on social media and be careful about who is out there. One way we could do this is don't let people follow you or friend you unless you know they won't hurt you and that they are safe.

      Delete

    2. Christal, I agree that people post too much personal information about themselves and that can be extremely dangerous. A way to prevent posting too much information about yourself is there should be warnings on social media that say of you are posting too much information. Before you post something you should think about what you put out there is going to be out there forever. You should really think about the consequences of what you post before you post it. Great Job!

    4. Christal, what you're saying is very true. I think to help this porblem; or in the future potentially prevent it, is by having blockers/barriers online. What I mean by this is, on Instagram for example, there should be a "blocker" that won't let you comment personal things about yourself or anyone else. It wouldn't let you post these things publicly, (so others couldn't see demeaning or private pictures). If we did this I think social media would be a lot safer.

    5. Christal, the problem you discuss is very important. I feel the most effective way to solve this is to raise teen awareness about the impact of posting personal information online. Seminars or even just a lesson about what to do and not do online would have a major impact.

  16. Have you ever been so exasperated that you felt your blood start to boil? If so, you may want to run from your cellular device before you get yourself into trouble, because, if “your messages are overemotional, demanding, and bordering on desperate, then you have most likely escalated to the cyber crime of stalking by texting.” The most common forms of stalking include making phone calls/sending texts, sending letters and spreading rumors about someone else. While this may not seem like such a crime, the maximum penalties include imprisonment for up to a year and/or a possible $1000.00 fine. Perhaps, to avoid this type of behavior, cell phones should measure one’s blood pressure before allowing a text to be sent or phone call to be made. While this could become possible in our day and age, for now, the biggest way to protect yourself from being accused of this is when feeling like your head is going to explode, you take a deep breath and back away from your digital device.

  17. One of the technologies we’ve developed and use today, are cellphones. To be more specific, the Samsung Note 7. The phone uses lithium ion batteries, and the liquid in them is highly flammable. Samsung rushed the phone to be released before the iPhone 7. If we would just slow down, and take time to develop our technology like phones and computers, then we wouldn’t have the issues we have today with them, like catching fire, and exploding.

    1. Rachel, another way we can prevent phones from exploding is to be more careful about what companies are using to make the phones. If they had taken their time developing the phone instead of worrying about their competitors, they probably would have been able to find something they could use instead of lithium ion batteries.

    2. Rachel, I agree with what you're saying about us slowing down and taking our time when it comes to developing new technology. If electronics people use everyday are made with lithium ion batteries and exploding, that's obviously a problem, and we should find alternative ways to advance our technology.

      Delete
    3. Rachel, Samsung shouldn’t have rushed the production of the Galaxy Note 7 with probably knowing the danger of the flammable lithium ion batteries. I know that whenever I use my phone it gets kinda hot, so Samsung should have known heat plus flammable battery equals danger. I think Samsung should have just slowed down and worked out the kinks. That could have made the best phone ever, but because Samsung rushed it to compete with Apple, they and we will never know. Also, these phone have caused so much danger to people that people are not allowed to use them on airplanes.

    4. That's a great example of how technology can go seriously wrong. The Samsung Note 7 is a fine phone by itself, but the exploding is a big problem. Even more problems from it, people who have that phone can't even go on an airplane with it, its a huge safety problem. Maybe if Samsung had experimented with it more, we wouldn't have this problem?

  18. A technology we use today without considering the dangers is the car. We drive in a car everyday. There are more and more distracted drivers using social media while driving. 10,272 death per year of the ages between 15-24 year old teens and adults, have died from car accidents. They should put down the social media. They all need to focus more on driving carefully to make sure they arrive safely or they might not arrive at all.

    1. I think that the car is both a luxury and a danger for people as well. Personally, I think that we should have less "smart cars" and more "smart drivers"! Great paragraph, sir!

    2. I agree, people who use social media while driving are distracted which causes car accidents. Another problem is, drinking and driving. Many people who have had too much to drink get behind the wheel without considering the dangers, like accidents and death.

    3. Not only do the people who are driving need to put away their phone but the people who are walking do to. Because people are just walking with their phones out they have a higher chance of walking into the road and getting run over by a car. A way to solve this problem is by turning off phone notifications when walking or when you are in a car.

    4. You are right. Cars are a serious issue that needs to be looked upon. It can be enjoyable and easy but terribly dangerous. Someone who is texting and drinking while driving is not only a life threat to themselves, but to others too. We can solve this problem by having a car that check your breath and locks away you phone so that you can only concentrate on the road. Lovely paragraph Brian!
