You have been researching a societal problem of your choice, and you should have lots of proof, in the form of statistics and/or examples, that the problem is fairly recent and can be traced back through history.

In one paragraph:

explain what the societal problem is, and
include your most recent evidence (example or statistics) to prove its existence (you should have way more information in your notes than you can fit in a paragraph).

  1. Electronics are great but they have many problems such as people are addicted, how we recycle electronics, and much more. In 2009 29.4 million electronics computers were disposed while only 18 million were recycled properly. You might not think this is a big deal but it actually is. Computer being recycled improperly can make millions of lead, mercury and calcium. All of those are poisionious to groundwater and soil. Addiction to electronics can lead to you getting cyberbullied, skipping your homework and losing sleep. Also it raises the chance of you being obese. Electronics are great for many things but it can harm our enviornment due to electronics being recycled impropery. It can also harm us if we use them to much

    1. I think the solution for this to get parents more aware about what is going on and not letting kids have a phone at young ages.

    2. We can help the environment by coming up with a system to dispose of electronics properly or figure out ways to reuse them.

    3. A solution is that maybe we can turn off our notifications, because if we don't have notifications on we won't have the urge to look at our device. To stop cyber bullying you don't have to engage. Also to fix how we recycle our electronics we can instead, take them to places like gamestop because they'll pay you for devices that are broken or not.

    4. A solution is to maybe start creating electronics that are durable, but are made out of safer materials for recycling.

  2. My societal problem is LGBTQ+ hate crimes and discrimination. One example of this problem is the Orlando shooting in Orlando, Florida. On June 12, 2016 there was a shooting at a gay bar in Orlando, Florida. The shooter, Omar Mateen had went into the bar at around 2.00am with a gun and the intent of killing people. 49 people were killed and many others were injured. Though Mateen had pledged his allegiance to ISIS, many people still believe that the shooting was a hate crime against gay people. Members of the LGBTQ+ were devastated to hear and see this on the news. Giving his condolences to the community, President Barack Obama said, "This is especially heartbreaking day for our friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender."

  3. 91% of victims of sexual harassment are women, and 9% are men. Which means victims of sexual assault and harassment can be with men as well, but is more likely in women. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men will be sexually harassed or even assaulted at any given moment of their lives. Sexual harassment is bothering someone in a sexual way, whether it's physical (touching), verbal (sexual comments), or non-verbal (flashing). Sexual assault is them actually threatening you into something or forcing it upon you. Harassers can be and are not limited to, any authority, a student, a teacher,a coach, or a stranger. They can be your friend, or your family, too.

  4. Gun violence is an issue that has been affecting the United States since the early 1900s. In 2018 alone, there were 307 shootings across the country, in only 311 days. Shootings are becoming normalized in the sense that you hear about them regularly, and at this point, are not even surprised. One of the more recent shootings was in Newtown CT. Adam Lanza (20 years old at the time), killed 20 children and 6 adults. These children were innocent first-graders, aged between 6 and 7, that were not even given a chance in this world. Sandy Hook Elementary School and families of attendees, suffered greatly. Lanza eventually took his own life after taking 26 others. Gun violence is something that has been going on for a while but is only getting worse. We are at a historical high as far as shootings go. We aren't even halfway through 2019, and there have already been 108 school shootings alone. We need to do our very best to put a stop to this never-ending violence.

    2. I think gun violence is a huge problem with our society, and the dangerous and crazy people in the world. So we need to be careful and schools need to be more protected, we need to stop selling guns to people under the age of 21.

    3. I think the solution is to do quick background checks on people and letting people who do handle guns safely and are following the law have them.

      Delete
    4. To get rid of guns completely will be impossible, so instead I would say that you should have stricter laws on guns. Then the problem of sneaking guns into homes will become a problem, so I think it's a cycle effect. Thinking this through, I'd say that the best solution that can come to mind is to ban any shops that sell guns and to ask the government to involve itself more with the NRA.

  5. Drug addiction is a major problem in the US; many people are dying from it each year. In 2017 more than 70,000 deaths were from drug overdose and it is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 55. For example, 27 year old Adam Moser had his life ahead of him. He was popular, athletic, and a college grad; it all ended when he died from a fentanyl overdose. Fentanyl was the cause of 45% of drug overdose deaths in the US in 2017.

I propose that every three months there is a mandatory doctors check to see if the person has done drugs recently. If they did, than they get a warning fine of $1000 because if they have the money to buy drugs than they have the money to pay the fine. If the come back the next time and had done drugs again, they will immediately be put in a rehab center for the year, or until they won't do drugs again.

  6. Cancer is the societal problem I selected to do. Cancer appears when there is uncontrollable growth and division of a cell. This cell becomes cancerous and can spread rapidly if not medically treated. In 2013 there were 11,630 cancer patients from ages 0-19, while in 2017 there were 15,270 patients. This represents the increase in cancer over a period of time and will continue as life goes on. From 2011 to 2015, there was an increase of 1.4% of cancer patients of ages 0-19.

  7. Teenagers have always been taking risks, but one risk that is incredibly concerning is the use of harmful substances. The use of substances like cocaine, marijuana, alcohol, and many more are increasing steadily. In a study from 2018 showed that 40% of 12th graders, 30% of 10th graders, and 13% of 8th graders were using drugs. Back in 2017 a study also showed that in 9-12th graders one half used marijuana. Substance abuse is a problem in teens that has been going on for a long time, and it's up to us to help stop it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This problem has become so prevalent because teens have such easy access to these drugs. One way to help resolve the problem could be to make it harder for teenagers to receive these drugs. Places like drug stores and smoke shops should be more regulated. If adults are supplying these drugs they should have harsher consequences.

      Delete
    2. A solution could be, having kids speak out. For example have people who have been addicted to drugs or many things along that line. Speaking out is a good way because it's touching and makes people think.

      Delete
    3. One solution to how we can stop the usage of harmful substances is that we need to police to prevent these teenagers from getting any drugs. They have experience with teenagers using harmful substances so they could arrest any drug dealers that are selling drugs to teens.

      Delete
    4. One thing that I think we could do to end substance abuse is make more agressive drug PSAs. The "Truth" campaign is a really awful ad service and if anything makes me want to try to vape out of spite. If we make more impressional PSAs that really make a scar on the kids that watch it, they might think about the commercial when they see or hear the name of the abusive substance, thus making them not want to try it.

  8. Child Labor. It's all around us, and its appearance takes on several forms. The manipulation of children to do labor is cruel, and at most they earn around $3 after working 12-18 hours six days a week! Recently there have been many deaths on the job. Ranging between 250-600. Some may believe we have grown out of this, and may believe that it's nonexistent. Their thinking is wrong, and it's legal under the Fair Labor Standards Act. As long as the child is above the age of 13 anybody can hire children to work for them. Just last year as of February, Nestlé was sued for the second time over child labor in the cocoa supply chain. Between the years 2003 and 2016, almost 500 children were officially named dead, and 52% of them died in the agricultural industry. One of them, a 12-year-old boy was cleaning the drainage pipes for his employer out in Tennessee, and out of nowhere an ATV rammed into him and crushed him. Statistically, most of the 500 deaths were between the ages of 10 and 17 with 145 children at the age of 17. At this point there may be no solutions in stopping the act, and there will always be loopholes around it. The only thing at this point we can do is recover from the damage done.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The use of child labor has deep roots in cheap manufacturing. One solution that I propose is to get people to boycott companies that use child labor. Your example of Nestlé showed me that some companies wont stop unfair child labor in order to make profits. So by boycotting the company, we-as people-can help make a positive difference in order to change the community for the better. Hopefully, this can show the manufacturers that their labor practice should not be accepted in the 21st century. Also, another solution is to get to the roots of the problem. Child labor is a common practice in the cocao industry in many parts of the world (Ivory Coast, Ecuador.) If we can pay off the companies in order for them to employ adults instead of exploit child labor, then we could save many children caught in the midst of child labor.

      Delete
    2. Child Labor isn't easy to solve. Child Labor is not easy to get rid of. The law has to take more action around the world and this might decrease it but probably never end it.

    3. A solution to solving child labor is to make sure that companies like Nestlè and Intel have responsible supply chains when getting their raw materials.

    4. Child labor is a very serious problem founded by very conniving people who always try to find loopholes into making the most money as possible, not caring about workers. The best solution could be that we can strengthen laws that allow for child labor, to make it so no company or person can allow for child labor, and try to make sure that the children of this world could possibly get the best childhood possible.

  9. My societal problem is screen/internet addiction; which is the obsessive use of electronics. Screen addiction is becoming a problem in many people's lives. Studies from 2018 show that adults in the U.S. spend about 11 hours a day in contact with technology (more than 5 times what it was 4 years before!). Not only are they using screens throughout the whole day, but 80% of people with a smartphone check their phones as soon as they wake up in the morning.

  10. My issue is the whole animal abuse issue in general. Whether it be animal testing, puppy mills, or cruelty towards animals in general. Many people believe animals do not need or even deserve rights. They think they don't feel pain or have emotions even though a variety of studies have disproven this idea. Animal testing is a highly debated subject. But did you know over 100 million animals are killed annually for animal testing. Even if they survive people euthanise them after. These animals are kept in isolated cages which is mental torture to these social animals. They are then shaved and burned with chemicals and injected with all sorts of stuff. Their last moments are lived in terror and fear. Think about your favorite makeup line. Maybelline,Clinique,Avon, or even Victoria's Secret? They all still test on animals. Do you really want that on the back of your head?. That is not the only type of abuse. Your favorite chicken company could be just as bad. KFC. Their chickens are kept in cramped cages and are shoved in vats of boiling water while they are alive to get the feathers removed from them. They feel that pain in their last seconds.10 billion animals are killed yearly just for us to eat and about 32% of that meat is wasted. Watch where you buy from. When you buy from these places they get money and continue their gruesome treatment of animals. Fight for them because they cannot fight for themselves.

    1. Although I know a lot of makeup companies have stopped testing their products on animals, and very few still do, we should start a petition against all companies testing their products on animals.

    2. Instead of killing chickens at a healthy age, we could wait until they are old so they are put out of their pain.

      Delete
    3. This may seem simple but I think a solution could be to either make animal testing illegal or boycott these companies that are participating in these cruel acts. If we protest against these companies that are animal testing they will either go out of business or they will be forced to make a change.

      Delete
    4. There aren't many solutions to ending the abuse of animals. A possible solution could be to boycott the company into stopping it themselves. The general idea is that the companies don't care about the animals, but the money that comes with it. If they don't bring in a mass amount of money as usual they could end up stopping this. But this leaves us with one question...how will companies continue to make a profit without serving chicken or selling the makeup as you used in examples?

Since 2012 advertisements were the main thing being targeted for Body image because they are in magazines and on tv. These ad's are meant to get consumers attention. When people see these ad's all they can think about is how they want to change their appearance. Body image has to do with your height, weight, shape, culture or even your gender. If you have a negative outlook on your body than you most likely have body dysmorphic disorder. You could just as easily be diagnosed with depression or some other type of eating disorder as well. And on that day 2,996 people died, and more that 6,000 injured. And these problem to continue as time goes on as well. But a more recent attack was a school shooting in Colorado. 1 person died along with 7 injured. 14. People who are LGBTQ face all sorts of discrimination and disrespect every day. For example, the Supreme Court ruling of the case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. When Dave Mullin and Charlie Craig went into Masterpiece Cakeshop one day, they were shocked when the baker, Jack Phillips, refused to bake them a wedding cake. Mullin and Craig decided to sue the cake shop. When the case was taken to the Colorado Civil Commission, they ruled that if Phillips refused to make them a wedding cake, he would have to stop making wedding cakes entirely. At first, that's what Phillips did, but eventually he decided to appeal to the Supreme Court. On December 5, 2017, the case was argued, and on June 4, 2018 the case was decided. Unlike the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the baker due to our first Amendment rights that give us our freedom of religion. So, in the end, Mullins and Craig did not get to have the wedding cake of their dreams made at Masterpiece Cakeshop, all because gay marriage went against the religion of the baker.

    1. A simple solution would be to not mention the gender of said partner. LGBTQ relationships are still new, and will take time for some if not most old fashioned kind of people to get used to. Hence, a baker is most likely to discriminate against a relationship such as this one.(They are used to following traditions, not breaking them. A homosexual kind of courtship is very new; and strange for them.) Everyone has different opinions, so it would be virtually impossible for everyone to accept LGBTQ relationships. At least right away. There's bound to be more people just like Jack Phillips, and to sue everyone that is against (homophobic) relationships such as these would be pointless. People like the baker need time to adjust and understand that homosexual relationships aren't evil. And that they are genuinely happy.

    2. This could be prevented. The bakery could have had someone else make the cake or they could have had something addressing that their religion is against it.

  15. Censorship is a huge societal problem that many dictators or strict rulers use to silence their critics. Rulers can go as far as fining, jailing, and even murder. There are many examples of censorship throughout history, some of the earliest examples are religious rulings against freedom of speech. One of the newest examples of this includes a Turkish NBA player named Enes Kanter. Kanter has been openly criticizing Turkish President Recep-Tayyip Erdogan throughout his career. In response, the Turkish government has accused Kanter of being involved in a terrorist group and censoring the games he has played. People in Turkey cannot watch any NBA games Kanter plays in. Also, Kanter's parent who live in Turkey faced 10 years of prison until they publicly disowned him in order to protect their lives. Also, when Kanter was on a trip in Romania, the Turkish government had revoked his passport and Kanter couldn't go home for hours, until the NBA found out about it and helped Kanter. He was released quickly after.

My societal problem are sports. Even since the 1900’s sports have been a small but prevalent cause of injury in the US. But they have shown their colors more in the youth in more recent years. According to Stanford Children’s Hospital, about 3.5 million children 14 and younger get hurt annually playing sports and almost ⅓ of injuries in childhood are sports related. Not enough evidence? According to the American Academy of Neurology, there is only 20% less of a risk of traumatic brain injury without a helmet than with a helmet. There have even been cases of suing. For example, a player in Iowa was awarded 1 million dollars after a school failed to treat his concussion. They believed he could just “walk it off”. He did not. That is why sports injuries are a societal problem. People just brush over them like its nothing.

In October of 2009 the United States attorney general stated the federal government would not charge people possession of marijuana as long as it is legal in the state of which they are currently possessing marijuana in. As of 2018, 10 states had legalized marijuana for recreational and medical use. The risks factors for using heroin are extremely high. People aged 12 - 25 have a 37% chance to use heroin. People who are white have a 63% chance to use heroin. Those who earn 20,000 - 49,000 dollars a year have a 34% chance to abuse heroin. People living in metro areas have an 85% chance to use heroin as well. Southerners also have a 36% chance to use heroin. A study in 2014 found that 620,000 people had overdosed on heroin. A study found that of the 12th graders who used drugs, 35.1% used marijuana, 5.8% used synthetic marijuana, 3.6% used MDMA, 2.6% used cocaine, 2.5% used LSD, 6.8% used adderall, 4.8% used vicotin, 4.2% used tranquilizers, 4.1% used cough medicine, 3.3% used oxycotin and 1.8% used ritalin.

    1. One solution that I believe we could attempt is regulating people who not only use drugs, but the dealers themselves as the main problem. Trying to put more effort to recognize the symptoms of a drug abuser, and more effort into recognizing a drug dealer locally, might be the best solution.

    2. We need to stop the drug chain. It starts with huge drug mafias. Once we can stop the bottom of the drug chain, like the dealers of marijuana we can could break the top of the drug chain. If our world can break part of food chain we can break the drug chain.

    3. The solution is to make these drugs hard to access. People who use these drugs don't do anything besides ruin there life. As long as they don't put anybody innocent in danger it is there problem. Drugs are very easy to access and that's a mistake and with the legalization of Marijuana is making it easier.

    4. One solution to stopping drug abuse is to find out the reason why people are so tempted by these drugs whether its peer pressure, anxiety, ext. So if you see someone that may be going over the edge, help them find other ways to help themselves without the use of drugs

  20. Pollution is a huge problem in our community today, people throw their trash out onto the streets, smoke, throw their trash into the ocean and use tons of straws that end up in the ocean. There are many different types of pollution such as air pollution and water pollution, though these are the main one. From 1990 - 2019 air pollution has risen drastically and has been the cause of death for millions, and is still going. A shocking 31% of waste generated by the EU is from agriculture and forestry, and another 31% from construction and demolition. Pollution takes the life of over a billion people every year, in particular children. Pollution has been going on for thousands of years, with air pollution going back all the way to 1280. Pollution isn't a minor issue anymore and we need to help get rid of it

    1. There are multiple solutions to solve pollution. You can help our cleaning some bay areas that are filled with trash. You can stop throwing garbage in the ocean or on the streets, and throw them in the trash can or recycling bin instead. Or you can limit your usage of gas emission machines like cars. Just throwing away an empty water bottle could prevent such a big problem like this.

    2. Though there are many ways to solve this issue, I believe recycling your waste is a huge solution. Instead of throwing your trash in the streets, hold onto it until you find a recycling bin!

    3. A solution would be to place strict regulations on how plastic is disposed of.

    4. A solution would be to create healthy alternatives to plastics. Such as plant straws. We could also further invest on healthier alternatives to fuel, like solar, or hydro.

  21. My societal problem is poaching. Poaching is a huge problem worldwide, hunters are consistently illegally killing endangered animals of the world. For example in africa the population of lions are down by 50%, thats half of africa's lions gone. Elephants have tusks of ivory which are sold for a very high price on the black market, as well as some parts of the rhino they are believed to be used in highly effective medicines. sometimes these animals are hunted for money but other times its by farmers to protect livestock or by hunters for trophies. recently a man paid $50,000 to have the chance to kill a lion he received lots of criticism for doing this because the lion was beloved by its entire town. Lots of other endangered species are endangered due to poaching such as leatherback sea turtles, tigers, the amur leopard, sportive lemurs, saolas, the javan rhino and many more.

    1. poaching should be taken more seriius and watched for becuase the population of rare animals is going down extreamly fast

    2. A solution that could be used to stop poaching is more people have to be aware of the problem an say something when you see something. If you make the punishment for poaching more than poaching will likely go down.

    3. I think that we could try make poaching illegal in some places to save endangered species. We could also make it so if you do poach some species, you have to pay a really high fine or something like that.

  22. I'm researching the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It dates back all the way to 1948, when Israel was founded in the region called Palestine. This act stirred up a lot of anger from the Palestinians living in that area, causing a never-ending conflict and hostility between the 2 regions. To prove it's still happening to this day, there were recent demonstrations set up by the Palestinians between March 30th and May 15th, 2018. They were put in between the Gaza strip and Israel, a place that's heavily guarded by Israeli security forces. The reason why the Palestinians protested was mainly due to the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem. While most protesters were peaceful, there were a few who started throwing rocks and other objects. This caused the Israeli security forces to shoot back at targets, killing 183 and wounding over 6,000. Some even shot as if it were a game.

    1. One possible solution is to make more people aware of this conflict, making people aware to how many were killed and suffered from it. This way, more solutions and people will rise to the occasion, and more peaceful ways, maybe a compromise to help both sides, could appear.

    2. One way to help end this conflict is for the Israelis and Palestinians to have a peaceful conference with each other and come up with an equal peace treaty to end the dispute over the land and end this conflict.

      Delete
    3. A solution to this problem would be to have this problem known so that everybody knows about it, and so they know that this is a real life problem

      Delete
    4. Another solution could simply be people being aware of their surroundings and knowing what they can do to help without causing any harm. With the amount of people that have been killed you would think people would be scared and not want anything to do with it.

  23. The societal problem that I chose to research is racial inequality. In 2016, Maira Teli, a teacher in georgia, got a letter from one of her students that told her to hang herself with her hijab. She believed that children felt more safe making racist comments because of president Donald Trump.

A solution to your societal problem might be teaching kids about different diversities and also teaching them about politics. This way, they have a better understanding of why people would wear stuff like hijabs and what politicians stand for.

    2. A solution could be to get kids to experience these cultures so they know what it is like, and they won't be racist.

      Delete
    3. A solution is to teach our younger generations that racial inequality is not right and that we shouldn't do it. This way we can create less racial problems in the future.

  24. An example of a solution to your societal problem would be to strengthen the amount of security in places that might have people abducting children or any adult. Hiring more security guards and using more technology for some places.

  25. A solution that has been attempted is to set laws in place so that this problem will stop. I think we should create stricter laws to stop this problem from escalating.

  27. Another solution could be to have more protection and to have police roaming around and keeping their eyes out. We need more protection around schools as well for all of the children that are being physically abused.
