Racism is a progressing problem. It comes in many differn't forms.Racist remarks can be because of anything, skin color,religion, clothing etc. In society 60% of people say that racism exists today and is a problem that needs solving and 31% say it exists but is nothing to worry about. But I think other wise. racism hurts feeling and is the stupidest thing I think exists. by now we should understand that everyone is equal and should be treated how they want to be treated. And if you make a mistake and accidentaly make a racist remark own up to it and say sorry I didnt mean to hurt your feelings. Dont be incensitive. But in the long run i think this can be stoped. we just need to take action.
ReplyDeleteRacism is a progressing problem. With a progressing solutions. In the past couple decades civil rights laws, and activist have born to prevent this. And it has been working. Like a 2 centuries ago slavery was a huge problem and now it has been resolved. But if we really want equality we first need to everyone around us is human, no matter their skin, race, or religion. Then we need to start making more laws or bills to enforce this; that no human should be treated differently.

DeleteA major problem that has been evident for decades, but even more so in the last ten years, is school shootings. Just in 2019, there have been 26 school shootings so far. School shootings happen for a variety or reasons, but the main one is mental illnesses. For example in Parkland Florida, Nikolas Cruz, the shooter, pleaded the insanity case at his trial. He has many complex mental issues that are believed to have caused his murderous rampage. Adam Lanza, from the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, was known to have mental illnesses as well. These are just two examples of school shootings, but there are so many more.

DeletePart of the problem leading to the issues we have with gun violence (in this case specifically school shootings) has to do with mental health issues. Creating more programs for patients with mental health problems and putting forth more awareness in today's society about mental health issues could help more people (especially parents to children struggling with them, as many school shooters are teens) understand what their children truly need. This, alongside better security in schools, could help to make school shootings more avoidable.

DeleteOne of the recent problems in our society is something that we have been constantly using for a big portion of our entertainment: Social Media. Social media is a playground where people could comment on videos, share day-to-day activities, watch videos, or just chat with friends. But social media is also a playground to cyberbullies who send out harmful images or words to people. Cyberbullying could potentially lead to suicide. On June 14, 2017, a 12-year-old New Jersey Girl took her life after being cyberbullied by her classmates. The school didn't do enough to prevent this. Cyberbulling is not the only reason social media is a problem. Back in 2005, only 5% of the worlds population used social media, because a small amount of people knew who social media was back then. But today, 70% of the world uses social media. Our excessive need for social media has been drastically growing, and cyberbulling is killing off innocent kids. This is why social media can sometimes be dangerous.

A way we could fix this is that the social media app could block the comment if they know it's inappropriate, by having people read over the comment or message to confirm that it isn't bad.

DeleteAnimal abuse is a pressing issue that is a reasonable concern. Such as dog and cock fighting which have been around for hundreds of years, and is still present today. From intricately planned matches that last hours to half a minute matches in an alley of a street, animal fighting, specifically dog fighting is everywhere. With 1093 complaints about Animal fights from Chicago alone (2003), it is still a prevalent and pressing issue. Another concern can be about puppy mills, where puppies are bred without any concern for animal welfare and all the concern for money. ASPCA estimates that there are 10,000 puppy mills currently in the USA, many of which have horrible hygiene and little to no veterinary care or clean food or water for the dogs, or rest time between litters for breeding females, who are killed when they are too tired to breed any longer. These are not the only types of animal abuse there is in the US, let alone the world, but perhaps with enough effort, we can eliminate all traces of it from the world.

Another thing countries around the world could do is to make it illegal to purchase from said puppy mills so less people purchase from them and the people in question running the mills would be forced to shut them down due to lack of funds.

However, if I was forced to say some solutions (which I am of course) I would say the US could place stricter security around schools and government buildings and to circulate anti terrorism propaganda. DeleteThe societal problem I have been researching is steroid use in baseball. Steroids are used to build up muscle, so they would give MLB players a big advantage over most other players. Since 2003, 63 players in the major leagues and many more in the minors have been suspended for steroid use. Steroids have been acknowledged as a problem since at least the 1960s, but they didn't make it to baseball's banned substance list until 1991. An average of 5-7% of MLB players have used steroids before, but hopefully, this number will go down soon.

DeleteDeforestation is a major issue that plagues our society. Trees are one of the most important life forms on earth, and clearing large areas of wooded land has many, many detrimental effects. For example, trees take in and store Carbon Dioxide (CO2) throughout the course of their lives. Cutting down large areas of trees has caused greenhouse gas emissions to increase by 12% from 2000-2005. Deforestation has also taken a toll on the types of species living in a certain range. Farmers in Scotland have almost wiped out some of its native pines, as only about 1% of the pines exist today. This was due to the clearing of forests in order to make land for pastures and fields. Deforestation also has negative effects on our climate. Our summers have more frequently been hotter and dryer. Super hot, dry summers naturally occur every one out of ten years. Trees provide shade from the sun, and with the loss of forests, hot, dry summers have began to occur about once every two to three years. This evidence clearly illustrates the negative effects of deforestation.

Right now, there are about 10,000 puppy mills that house dogs that are not taken care of. Each year, more than two million dogs are sold from puppy mills. When dogs are in puppy mills, they don't get taken care of properly, causing them to get sick easily and develop diseases. In 2008, The Humane Society searched through pet stores and found that more than 60% of stores were harming the animals in some way. There was an act passed in 1878 in Britain that said we have to regulate animal experiment testing. We can and should put an end to animal cruelty; what did the animals ever do to you?

I think we should stop buying from pet stores immediately. Puppy mills main source of income is from puppy mills. But we would need a home for all those puppies in and we would need to find and block all 10,000 puppy mills in the US.
DeleteA possible solution I have just came up with is by creating a system where people go into the pet stores for animal checkups to see if they are being harmed by the pet stores. If they are being harmed, the pet store gets a strike system. First time harm is found to animals, a hefty fine. Second time, an even heftier fine. Third time they find evidence of animal cruelty the pet store is shut down. A strict system like this could end the cruelty of pets in pet stores. A system like this could also be used to combat the puppy mill problem.

In Lost Vegas where fifty-eight people died with in ten to fifteen minutes? Or do you think of all the other three hundred and six mass shootings that happened in 2018? All around the U.S mass shootings go on everyday for so many different reasons. Reasons that most people can't even think of. Just the people who study mass shooters for a living. 1,153 lives were taken last year. Those lives range from eight months old to eighty years old. seven mass shootings go on a week. They declare it as a mass shooting, if one or people died or if three or more people were wounded severely. This is a huge problem in the U.S and we need to lower these numbers. Pollution is when the environment gets contaminated, causing great changes. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy such as noise, heat, and light. Pollution mainly comes from industrial plants, combustion of fossil fuels and pesticides. In Bhopal, India toxic gas called Methyl Isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant. Fumes drifted into various cities and towns. This led to 20,000 deaths, 558,125 injuries, lung cancer, dizziness and growth retardation. Industries all over the world continue to dump pollutants into rivers and streams. It is know that 290, 589 gallons of raw sewage are dumped in the Ganges River every minute. Though there are laws in each country that help limit the amount of pollutants many people illegally dump pollutants in the water. This is killing millions of marine animals and is causing severe illnesses. In 2007 an investigation led by the Associated Press found illegal drugs and prescription drugs in drinking water of more than 41 million Americans. Hopefully we start taking action to decrease pollution before it's too late.

DeleteHuman trafficking is a massive problem throughout the world, and in many places it is even overlooked as an everyday occurrence. Human trafficking is defined as “The recruitment, transportation, or harboring of a persons by means of threat or force.” This problem is very real especially here in the US. Just last year there was an estimated 20.9 million victims of human trafficking. 26% of these cases involved children. India comes in with the most cases, then China, then Pakistan. Human trafficking is a billion dollar industry and that drives stealthy criminals to traffic hundreds of innocent people. Many countries don't even meet the standards the United Nations set to prevent this problem.

DeleteThe Problem that I had researched was Unemployment, and it has many effects. Just recently last month in April it was reported that the U.S unemployment percentage was at 3.8 %. That's roughly about 11.6 million people in the U.S without a job. Throughout the years the rate has decreased since 2010 when the rate was at 9.8 %. Even though it is decreasing there is still millions of people without a job. Some of the examples of effects unemployment can have on a person is, poor, hungry, need a shelter, and it reduces the life expectancy. Surely the number of jobs open to people who need jobs increases even as it is currently right now.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most basic solutions that come to my mind when I read this is to create more jobs. Just as we Americans have done all throughout history. Look back to the Great Depression and how much unemployment there was then, and compare it to what we have now. The most simple solution is to create more jobs, and even if they are temporary it will help people get back on their feet.
DeleteUnemployment used to be a grave problem, but it's slowly getting better. One way to speed it up to start running organizations that allow only people who have been unemployed for a long time to register.

DeleteYou may think plastic bags are just what you put your groceries in or what your take out food comes in, but that plastic has a major effect on the environment. The building blocks and chemicals that are use to make up plastic is actually very toxic to us humans and animals. The toxic chemicals that are in plastic are tributyltin and phthalates, these chemicals can hurt the development and reproduction of animals if they were ever to be digested, and who knows what it could do to humans. Another chemical found in plastic that is harmful to humans is bisphenol A (BPA). If you have high exposure to BPA than you can have an increase rate of heart disease and diabetes. What makes plastic an issue that goes way back into the past is how plastic takes millions of years to biodegrade, so you can say plastic doesn’t die. Since plastic never dies it will be swept up in the air or get caught in the runoff and end up in the oceans. Did you know that around the year 2025 155 million tons of plastic will go into the oceans, that is too high of a number. As you can see plastic waste is a major problem that needs to be fixed.

DeleteThe societal problem I choose to write about is cyberbully. In 2018 there was 4,400 suicides because of cyberbully. On August 20 2017 A fourth grade student James Myles was a 9 year old boy who took his life, because kids were bullying him about being gay at school and on social media. 94 percent of teens use social media, and 66 percent of them have depression. There is many more stories about teens who took their own life because of cyberbully, but James was just one out of 44,000.

The majority of the internet is in something called the deep web where search engines can not index it because it requires a login or the company doesn’t want it indexed by search engines. Most people think that the deep web and dark web are one in the same, but the dark web is only a small sliver of the deep web.
One way you could solve this problem is to simply get rid of dark web search engines. This would get rid of illegal behavior that cannot be tracked.
DeleteThe Dark Web is definitely a hefty problem. It could require a large role for the government to solve the solution. They could make a larger effort to track down Dark Web websites and shut them down.
DeleteI think one of the best ways to stop the problem of the Dark Web is by spreading awareness of it. Before reading this I thought the dark web was just a term for websites that were sketchy. In reality it is much different. If we spread what the Dark Web really is, more people may be aware and angry at it and we can end the dark web once and for all. The more attention it is given, the harder it will be for the Dark Web to exist.

DeleteThe societal problem I choose to research is addiction. There are many types of addiction. It can be from drugs and alcohol to gambling and video games. People have different reasons for starting things that lead to addiction like a mental health disorder/issue, genetics, and being exposed to a chaotic environment. In 2017, 20.7 million americans 12 and older struggled with a substance addiction. Only 4 million of those 20.7 million received treatment and about 10% of those made some sort of recovery. Addiction can affect many things. A major effect is on your brain. It also affects decision making and relationships. The person also uncontrollably seeks what they are addicted to. If someone is addicted to substances like drugs and alcohol they are more likely to get a physical injury and have an increased risk of death.
ReplyDeleteA big solution for addiction that I know is already going on, is rehab centers. There they do therapy and help you recover from an addiction that someone has. Many people have turned a new leaf and recovered from their addiction through rehab centers.
DeleteA solution that can be made is to simple be aware of addiction and help those who have an addiction. With everyone's support to help out others, there will be less addiction.

DeleteA major problem in the world is steroids. Mostly used by student and professional athletes trying to get stronger and faster quicker. But they're not realizing how much harm it's doing to your physical and mental state. When you use steroids it's not just your body changing; its your brain mental state, and your heart too. There is more than 80% of body builders, one in fifty twelfth graders are using steroids and some of them rent even doing it to be better at sports they are using it to get good looking which is even worse. On April 26, 2016 Dee Gordon a major league baseball player was caught using performance enhancing drug (steroids), and got suspended for 80 games. In 2009 Alex Rodriguez admitted to using steroids from 2001-2003 because there was too much pressure. In 2000 Marion Jones who did track and field five olympic medals and three were gold, but in 2007 she admitted to using steroids. Marion got the medals taken away from her,and got six months in prison for lying under oath saying using steroids. There is 80% of bodybuilders, 30% of college students and 20% high schools students in the U.S. are using steroids. This shows that steroids are a problem.
ReplyDeleteSince steroids are such a societal problem I think that teenagers need to understand that it takes time to change your body. Drugs are never the answer to anything and that's why I believe that teens should just change their lifestyle in a healthy way for example the way they are eating or how much exercise they are getting. Steroids are not worth risking you career and your health.
DeleteA solution to this problem could be to run checks on athletes and if they are found with steriods they can be punished/put into rehab.

ReplyDeleteAn example of a solution could be that there can be laws that can intimidate the people who would commit these crimes. Like if there is say a police officer who is threatening a civilian of a different race who has done nothing, there can be laws to scare the police officer into not harming the civilian in any way.
ReplyDeleteA major societal problem is drug abuse, a very common issue. Drug abuse is a growing issue in today's society. The annual cost for the US about $750 billion dollars. There is about 992,000 teens suffering from drug abuse in the US. Throughout history drug abuse has been prevalent. Specifically Heroin in young adults has doubled in the last decade. We need to start paying more attention to drug abuse in the US.
ReplyDeleteThe societal problem that has become so major in our world is the effects of social media. Social media has so many negative outcomes, one of them being cyberbullying. 1 million children were cyberbullied through Facebook just in the year 2011. A tragic example of cyberbullying is shown by 18-year-old Brandy Vela. Brandy received many abusive comments through many different sites. Most of the comments were about her weight. It came to the point where Brandy ended er life by shooting herself in the head with her family witnissing it. There are so many more examples of this, and there shouldn't be. But what can we do to stop it?
