In “By the Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast.”  As we discussed in class, Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of developing and using technology too quickly.   In one paragraph:

describe a technology from today that we use without considering the dangers,
offer suggestions as to how we could use it more carefully, and
at the end, paste the url of a website from which you  did some reading about the dangers of using the  technology.

  1. Today the youth of America are vaping. Eleven percent of high school seniors and eight percent of eighth graders have reported vaping nicotine. They assume that vaping is not bad and has very few if any harmful effects, but that is not the case. The national cancer institute has reported there are more than 7,000 harmful chemicals. Vapes also contain the highly addictive drug nicotine.
A way of safely using vapes is to just not vape at all. They contain harmful chemicals and can cause addiction, and no one wants that.

Ways we can protect our eyes is by using dim light apps on our phones, avoid looking at bright screens two to three hours before bed, and using night vision apps on electronics.

  3. A technology that we use without considering the dangers of is video games. According to npr.org, people who play video games that involve first person shooters, such as Call of Duty and Overwatch, experienced shrinkage in the hippocampus of the brain. The hippocampus is the part of your brain that associates with stress regulation and memory. We can still play video games but in moderation.

  4. The Internet:

Yes, the internet can be a highly beneficial tool for people around the world. However, the same things that can help us, can cause us concern as well.
Cyberbullying. It is the most common threat you encounter when going on the internet. It can also take countless forms on the internet, this includes things such as offensive messages, gossip, or even death threats. Cyberbullying varies from the usual bullying, others can’t just easily intervene with it and end it.
Predators. The online world presents the door for virtual interaction. Normally, they target children in chat rooms, but they have grown smarter and have migrated to where young people go online, like social networking sites. Predators often take on fake identities and try to become buddies with the children by showing interests, to become closer to the child.
Damaging reputations. Cameras are everywhere these days, and anyone can become a victim in their own inexperience with them. Many posts, pictures, and videos people post online, they usually regret. Once you post something, you can take it down, but, it will still be on the internet forever. Colleges, internships, jobs, they all check with what applicants post online. Posting could ruin your future before you even start it.

What can we do to prevent all of this? Well, if someone is being harassed or threatened, they should use the block feature to prevent the bully from contacting you. If you get harassing emails, you can report them as spam, or just delete the email in all. Also, don't antagonize the bully by responding in a rude or hasty manner. If the cyberbullying continues, call the police.
If you are dealing with a predator, tell children not to post a full name, address, phone number, school name, or anything else that could be useful in tracking them. Also, an easy solution is to put the computer in a common area of your home, not in the child’s bedroom.
Another thing is, don’t go out posting whatever, think before you post, after all, it could jeopardize your future. Furthermore, explain to people that even if you delete your post/video/etc. it will still be on there forever, no matter what you do. Also, explain that your actions on the internet could lead to possible consequences such as colleges not accepting you.

  5. People don't really understand the risks of cars. People hop in cars and speed off. People drive recklessly not caring about the welfare of others. Not to mention drugs and alcohol. About 1.25 million people die each year from cars. About 31% of those crashes are alcohol-related. Some car crashes are no one's fault. In 2013 world loved actor Paul Walker famous for The Fast and Furious, died in a horrible car accident that killed 2 others. The man driving Roger Rodas lost control on a 35 road. The car sped across the road and crashed. The car then set on fire. Cars are dangerous. They should not be misused or abused.
We can make cars safer. If your BAC is over 0.08 DO NOT DRIVE, in fact, if your BAC is over 0 at all it would be better to not drive at all. Drugs and alcohol impair the brain. If you drive with these you are putting countless lives in danger. Be safer in cars don't try to show off follow the rules of the road. I also feel we should find a new fuel for cars. Many people in fatal car accidents die because the car bursts into flames. We should find a non-flammable source. Countless people could be saved. On cars that don't race we should make a limit on the car. A speed you can't get over. Why make a car that can go 200mph when usually you can't go over 65 mph. We need to get rid of the 9th leading cause of death in the US. We can save so many people. To die in a car crash is horrible. It is painful and unintentional even if it isn't your fault. We need to save these people. Cars can be safe if we use them responsibly. If cars had been safer so many people could still be alive.

Some marketers even target their Advertisements to children by using animations, actors that seem to be under 21 and bright colors. The nicotine content of one pod is equivalent to one pack of cigarettes. Also vaping is highly addictive since the high level of nicotine.

  7. With all-wheel drive and high-speed power, the car, a device which we use every day without thinking, is the ninth most common cause of death in the United States. People often drive under the influence, or text while doing so. It may not occur to them that their actions may end their lives or another's life. People need to understand that their actions, have reactions that are more serious than they know. The solution is simple, don't do it. Don't drink and drive. Don't text and drive. Think about how your actions could affect somebody else. Don't be part of the problem causing injury and death across the United States, help be a part of the solution.

  8. Signing up for social media is no doubt dangerous. Many teens have no idea of the dangers of social media when they click "create account". When you move to a new neighborhood, no one needs your username, a password to get into the neighborhood, or your favorite food, and/or your dog's name if you forget the password. But it's different online. Have you ever thought about how companies may sell that information for profit? The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, denies selling data of it's 2 billion users, even though there is much proof of him doing so. Schools are forcing people to have accounts on Google, which has been proven to be using your data to sell you things. Have you ever gone on to ebay and searched something, and then see that photo of the item everywhere on Google Ad Space? I sure have, and that makes it clear Google is trying to sell you stuff With ad space. To prevent things like this, use websites that allow you to remain anonymous, such as 4chan or Tumblr. Use anonymous web browsers like DuckDuckGo or use a VPN to keep your information safe. Incognito mode on chrome still tends to track your data and use it to sell you things, so try to stay away from it. The internet is dangerous, so at least give yourself a fighting chance to remain anonymous.

  9. A technology we use today that we don't consider the dangers of are overhead projectors. They can heat up and cause the metal and plastic parts of the projector to melt. The melting can then cause the release of harmful chemicals. These chemicals could possibly affect students by causing skin irritation, headaches, and dizziness. Another danger of projectors could be dust. Dust can get into parts of the projector and cause a fire. The fire could start at anytime, depending on how much dust there is and, or if it's on or not.
A way we can fix the problem could be by simply cleaning it and turning it off if it's not in use. This solution will result in less accidental fires and would stop the overheating all together. When the projector is not in use, it is best to turn it off because then the projector has some time to cool off after a long-term use.

  10. We use cars and trucks everyday, but we don't always consider how bad it is to the environment and our health. Cars release approximately 333 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually, which is 20 percent of the world's total. That affects us and the environment. If there is to much Carbon dioxide in the air, the plants that turn the CO2 will soon take in O2, which will kill off mostly every living thing on this planet. Today there are 620 million private cars worldwide, to say nothing of buses, vans and lorries. On current growth trends, that number is expected to double to a staggering 1.2 billion cars worldwide by 2020. At this rate, the world as we know it will have drastically changed by the year 2050. How can we use cars more carefully? Well we can use electric cars and we can also reduce the amount of cars being built, because the factories that make the cars and trucks give off a lot of Carbon dioxide. Or as a smaller step, we could just walk a little more everyday and use a bike instead of a car.

  11. In this day and age, technology is booming. With Apple and Android releasing several new smartphones and tablets each year, people are now staring at screens more than ever! In fact, there has been a new phobia developed by "phone-addicts" called nomophobia (the fear of being without your phone or being unable to use your phone). Studies have also shown that tissue has been lost in areas where "processing occurs" because of internet/gaming addiction!

I think that the best way to stop this is for the screen time to be limited. Not just with warnings that can be closed, but with automatic shutdowns to keep screen users healthy.

Alcohol, a product of technology, has ruined the lives of many and doesn't affect just people who drink. It affects their family too. Alcohol can cause permanent changes in the brain such as severe liver disease and thiamine deficiency.Teenagers are especially susceptible to the effects of alcohol because their brain is still developing. I believe the solution to this would be to have the US put a restriction on the amount of alcohol one person can buy at a single time or within a certain period of time. This would greatly reduce alcoholism and would make teenage drinking much less common.

But have you heard the dangers these little cards called credit or debit cards can do to you for example if you use to much money or overdo it or dont make payments on time you will for sure damage your credit records. A lot of people tell you to spend a lot of money on things and what you dont know is you dont have enough. Also for your credit card it can only takes a couple of seconds for someone to hack into your credit card and go spend however much money they would want. But the bank may help out with this problem. With hackers they will most likely spend a lot of money on things like TV's, computers, gaming equipment etc.
your issuer will eventually freeze your account or call you to make sure it would be you spending all of that money. But you shouldnt take for granted that your bank will always notify you about the fraud because it probably wont always happen. It is good for your credit card to be always checking on your account to make sure nothing suspicious is happening to it. 14. Technology has been traveling at the speed of light in the past decade. Only eight years ago,the percentage of Americans who used smartphones were 35%, a staggering jump to 77% compared to today. As technology is progressing, the value of privacy has declined due to social media, and it seems to keep declining as social media app "snapchat" has put out a feature to keep track of people's locations called "Snapmaps". The creators of Snapchat insist that the feature is dangerous, as only your friends can see it. Although this may be true, Snapchat puts out highlights of it's users that anyone can see. This has increased the dangers of technology, but it could be simply fixed. If Snapchat removed the feature to track down other's locations, it would instantly make their app much safer.

But what they don´t know is that they aren´t going to have a social life anymore... Teens don´t get enough sleep because they are worried about texting their friends or watching netflix. About 43 percent of teens were reported to be sleeping less since they had a phone or any other kind of screen. Teens are becoming significantly more sleep deprived to the point where parents are worried about the exposure to technology. Even toddlers are using screens today and the blue light is affecting their brain development. Therefore I believe parents should take away their kids screens at a certain time every night, that way there won´ be a problem with teens getting enough sleep.

  18. Currently most humans have headphones to listen to music or watch videos on their phones. People like to have the volume loud, to block outside noises. When we hear sounds, sound waves cause the eardrum to vibrate. Vibrations then travel through the inner ear and it reaches the cochlea. Then the fluid vibrates, which makes the hairs move. The louder the volume is the more hairs move. If we keep the volume loud and listen long we can lose some hair cells attached to vibration. Then we aren’t able to hear. We humans could be more cautious when we cross roads because we will hear our headphone volume better than we will hear cars on the road. We also have to be careful inside too, the wire to our headphones can attach to a doorknob. That can cause the wire to unplug from our electronic device and we might trip or the electronic might fall. We humans are not perfect but we can definitely be more careful using headphones.

AI can be as simple and small as personal assistants like Siri, and self-driving cars to deadly weapons intended to cause chaos. AI does what it's programmed to, it doesn't stop because it's told to. It doesn't have emotions that help people make decisions.
