In “By the
Waters of Babylon,” John says, “Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge
too fast.” As we discussed in class,
Stephen Vincent Benet wanted readers to inquire and explore the dangers of
developing and using technology too quickly.
In one paragraph:
● describe a technology from today that
we use without considering the dangers,
● offer suggestions as to how we could
use it more carefully, and
● at the end, paste the url of a
website from which you did some reading
about the dangers of using the
technology.
We use of phones for mostly everything. Communication, reading, entertainment, social networking, and lot more. But sometimes it can lead to serious problems. If you use your phone too much, it can increase your risk of acoustic neuroma and glioma, which are the more common cancerous brain tumor. If you use your phone in your bed, you can get less sleep as well. If you are on your phone while your walking or driving, you'll most likely die. I would suggest you don't use your phone at night, pay attention to the road while driving or walking, and don't constantly be on your phone all the time! It can lead to some fatal results!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.center4research.org/can-cell-phones-harm-health/
Another solution to this addiction to phones is perhaps to, as horrible as this may seem to teens, involve the government a bit more and add more restrictions to both the purchase of phones and the use.
DeleteGriffin did a good job, the blue light on our phones damage our eyes and brains; we really should limit our usage of phones, especially at night. The blue light keeps us up and doesn't allow us to fall asleep easily.
DeleteI think you are right, making sure you do not use your phone is important because if you are on your phone to much it does cause mental issues like sleep insomnia and other issues. Less sleep could make you do bad in school and that might make you messed up for life, making sure you limit your phone use is important.
DeleteWe use laptops and computers everyday for homework, searching the web, and more. What we don't consider is the strain constant use of screens puts on our eyes. 80% of humans use laptops or computers every day! This is not good for your eyes. 59% of people experience eye strain from using laptops/ computers. That's more than half of all users. If you want to avoid eye strain from using your laptop or computer, doctors suggest taking a break from looking at your screen every twenty minutes. Another option is to not use your device as much. If you use your laptop/ computer without breaks and too often, you will strain your eyes. https://www.thevisioncouncil.org/content/digital-eye-strain
ReplyDeleteYou can also use a textbook for homework instead of the computer for help. This really helped me realize that I need to be careful for how long I should be on the computer, thanks!
DeleteGreat Job Sadie! A solution to this problem can be limiting your screen time, or challenging yourself to stay away your devices as much as possible.
DeleteIn order to limit laptop usage our parents can make restrictions on how much we use electronics
DeleteTechnology is useful, and made our lives easier, but they are not always beneficial. Nowadays the amount of plastic we use every day is more than a hundred billion. Plastic is dangerous and kills a lot of sea creatures. It takes thousands of years to decompose. Thankfully we can prevent this by disposing plastic properly or even better switching to alternatives. You could use cloth bags when you grocery shopping, don't use plastic water bottles, use metal straws instead of plastic. Plastic is cheap and durable, but you have to choose between what is easy and what is right.

DeleteThis is very well written. But better yet, we can use the plastic again. We can use plastic bags again and use disposable straws multiple times. This reduces the plastic we use by a lot.
DeleteI love the solutions you have provided for this problem! I think it's a wonderful idea to use cloth bags instead of plastic bags in grocery stores.
DeleteThere are so many ways that we can switch between single use and multiple use items! Another switch that we can make is to not use plastic utensils.
DeleteEverybody uses technology for a lot of different things. But sometimes technology can be used in a bad way. People can be on technology too much. Some examples are people are so attached to their phone that they text and drive. That is super dangerous you can die, injury someone or yourself or get a ticket for texting and driving. Another problems is people just dont go outside anymore, spend time talking to people, doing other things like having a hobby or just engaging with kids. So I think technology is okay but just being to attach to it can be bad.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.electronicdesign.com/communications/technology-bad-you
Nice Kyle, phone companies should put a lock on the phone if you use the phone for more than two hours.
DeleteA solution to this problem is to use other technology like blutooth devices. This way people can talk on their phones while driving but still be able to look where they are going.
DeleteI like your paragraph.
DeleteI agree with your piece and how technology is taking over people's lives; we need to take the time to be outside and not sit on our phones all day. It will slowly drift our friends away from us and it could hurt us in the long run.
DeleteHave you ever seen someone walking with airpods in? They are something we use without thinking of the effect they have on our body. About 900,000 americans have airpods. Airpods give off close-range radiation and that could result in irreversible brain-damage. You could lessen this likelihood of getting brain-damage by not wearing airpods for long periods of time, Don't share them with other people, and don't turn the volume up too loud.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2016/09/11/airpod-brain-damage-radiation-threat/
I agree airpods are becoming an issue, for many people do not pay attention to their surroundings with them in; I think a way to prevent damage is to make sure you are careful when using. Airpods should not be used when you are outside or in a situation where not being aware is an issue.
DeleteWe could also communicate with one another as opposed to constantly using airpods.
DeleteGood job Riley! Adding on to not sharing your airpods with others, you should clean them so you don't get any ear infections.
DeleteUsing the wrong light bulb in your lamp can do more than make your lighting worse. It can also put you at a higher risk of having a fire. Also, even scarier, many CFL light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, which can be quite harmful to us humans and pets. If you break a bulb, turn off your vents, have everyone leave the room, open a window, and both wet and dry clean any areas that may have been affected by the broken bulb.
ReplyDeletewww.houselogic.com/remodel/painting-lighting/broken-cfl-clean-up/
A simple solution is to be very careful when you choose your light bulb at the store you are at. Also to prevent fires turn light off when you leave your home, it will also lower cost of electricity.
DeleteAn easier solution to this would be do carefully select your lightbulbs based off of what type of lamps / lights you have.
DeleteMarvelous and prodigious paragraph Kai! I believe a better solution would be to buy bulbs that are extra safe which you can find in many places.
DeleteCell phones today are used as instant communication. They also have all the information you could need at your fingertips. Even with this great resource, people abuse the privilege, and it’s beginning to affect human relationships and communication skills. People of all ages use technology without thinking because of the convenience it brings to our everyday life. However, this habit may not be healthy. Studies have shown that cell phones have affected our interpersonal skills and reduces family communication. People show less empathy and it maybe hard to interpret someone's tone of voice over text. We could be more cautious of this risk by leaving phones in another room when eating family meals. People could also set alarms making sure they are only spending an hour or two on their phones.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-your-cell-phone-hurts-your-relationships/
Good piece Makenna. One more possible solution to lower cell phone usage, could be deleting apps that you use most frequently for a temporary amount of time. You would use this method when doing homework, studying, or any reason when you feel like your technology habits have been unhealthy.
DeleteI think that these solutions are great and could be very useful for those who are addicted to their phones. It's a great idea to use timers, some apps even lock your phone and make sure that you can't get in unless you complete a math equation and that also helps you gain more knowledge.
DeleteTECHNOLOGY IS DANGEROUS!. Technology Is very dangerous because it is taking over most of the people in the 20th century In 2015 45% of people in the US had a tablet and more shockingly 68% of people had a smartphone. That was 4 years ago imagine what that percentage would be in 2019 my guesses are 80% or above. Im saying this because apple and Samsung and other smart phone companies have creating brand new smart phones and also brand new tablets. Technology is also ruining human interaction nowadays you don't see people talking to each other rather than texting or face timing each other. maybe a app developer should make a app so your smart phone will turn off by it self 1-2 hrs before you go to sleep.

https://www.lolwot.com/the-10-biggest-dangers-posed-by-future-technology/
maybe instead of making a timer to shut off our devices, we could have parents make restrictions on when to use electronics.
DeleteI don't think parents should have to be using an app to control the amount of time their children are spending on social media. Instead I think parents should be choosing an appropriate age to buy their kids technology at that way they will be mature enough to know when to put technology down.
DeleteHave you ever thought what your phone really does to you? Today almost everyone we know has a phone. We use all our phones for many different reasons. Do you talk to people or do you mostly text them ? Today ninety one present of american adults have a phone revolutionize in communication in the 21st century. Most people take their phone everywhere. Are you one of those people? Well think about it. You take your phone everywhere. What type of germs get on your phone? Your phone can contain more disease-prone germs than a toilet. Phones and technology are slowly taking over. Some people are so addicted to their phone when they are driving, they crash and sometimes other people die. Is technology always for the best ? www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/radiation/cell-phones-fact-sheet
ReplyDeleteSince many people in the 21st century are addicted to technology, people should use there phones less in public and during social events, so they can communicate with one another accordingly.
DeleteNice job! One solution is to keep your phone off when driving and in social interactions and put a limit on the amount of time you use your phone each day.

ReplyDeleteTechnology has advanced by leaps and bounds in the last century, and it helps lives everyday. However, sometimes technology harms. Take screens, from phones and computers for example. Phones and computers are really useful, and can help gain and record information quickly. However, sometimes it can get out of hand. Looking at screens can harm our eyes, because of the constant eye strain you get from using them. It can also hurt your back because of the posture you hold while using phones, and effect hearing by using earbuds and headphones for too long at high volume. Ways to prevent this would be trying to prevent prolonged screen usage. Taking breaks to read a book or play outside would help. By continuously using phones and computers, we harm ourselves. We need to learn how to control such things, or else it will be our end.

DeleteGood job Amita! For another solution for limiting screen time, we can limit the amount of electronic devices we use with screens.
DeleteWOW nice article, another solution would be to set a timer for the amount of screen time per day.
DeleteIn a world where people can learn anything from the highway of information or otherwise known as the internet. We have been moving faster in society. People are now more connected than ever. In this utopia of information people often just stay on the internet for hours upon hours. We have gotten concerned about what these devices do to us in the long term and some effects that are already affecting people. One effect of the information age is insomnia. High energy blue light coming from displays can cause delays of sleep. The High energy blue light that is emitted from the screens is also emitted from the sun. This tricks your body into still thinking that he sun is up. Have you ever tried to sleep when your body is well rested? That is what it is like for people who stay on electronics before they go to bed. The issue occurs in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus of the brain where the sleep and wake hormones in the body are regulated. Loss of sleep from use of electronic devices can cause: yawning, moodiness, fatigue, irritability, depressed mood and a whole lot of other wonderful symptoms. Modern devices such as PCs, Macs, IOS devices, and Android devices have modes where the devices limits the blue light emission from the display. There are also glasses that can block high energy blue light from entering your retinas. I personally suffer from electronic related insomnia because I use electronic devices for way longer than I should. At some points, I actually can't sleep at all. This lack of sleep can make me stress out like crazy over the smallest things. Overall don't use technology before you go to bed or you will not be able to go to sleep.
ReplyDeleteLuke your piece was very good and fact filled. Another way that it affects us is that it take us away from society, friends and family and it isolates us.
DeleteWow great detail! You could also include how phones can be distracting during school, and that student should keep them stored away in a locker.
DeleteTechnology all around we use a lot, but I believe that we use our phones the most for mostly everything like; communication, entertainment and many other things. But your phone can be very dangerous to your health. One reason why phones are bad for your health is the radiofrequency radiation in your phone that can cause damage to your cells and DNA. The radiation can also cause burns and can cause all different types of cancers. With this said though it also could be resolved by having a timer on your phone for a certain amount of time, but after you use up your hours the only thing you can do is call 911 or your family; like mom, dad, sister, brother, and grandparents. This could help by not completely taking your phone away but limiting your time to your phone.

https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/cancer-controversies/mobile-phones-wifi-and-power-lines
Although the radiation emitted from phones is considered non-ionising meaning it isn't harmful, the light being emitted from smart phones tend to imitate daylight. This tricks your eyes and brain into believing it is day and gives you issues when you try to sleep. the solution to this is to simply not use your phone an hour before bed.
DeleteThe timer can work to get people off there phone a little more because you can just add the important apps, and not just social media and everything that keeps everybody on there phones for long periods of time.
DeleteHuman technology has advanced more in the past 30 years than it has in the rest of Earth's existence. We have developed technology for almost every problem that we have ever had, and we continue to create more and more advanced technology for everyday uses. However, at what point does technology cross the line? Amazon's ¨Alexa¨ is a piece of modern technology that is capable of streaming music, making calls, searching the web, and much much more. However, Alexa poses a crucial security threat to many people if they are not careful. Hackers have become more and more advanced, and are able to hack into YOUR Alexa device in your house to monitor your activities. A story on Wired.com documents how a research team-called Checkmarx-hacked into an Amazon Alexa by downloading a ¨Skill¨ onto it. This ¨skill¨ basically made the Alexa device keep listening after any conversations with the Alexa had ended. According to Erez Yalon, the head of research at Checkmarx, ¨We actually did not hack anything, we did not change anything, we just used the features that are given to developers.¨ ¨So how could I prevent this?¨, you may ask. Well, the only way to 100% guarantee that your Amazon Alexa device will not be hacked is to not own one. We impulsively use lots of technology that pose risks to our everyday lives. This shows how owning an Amazon Alexa device could be a crucial threat to your security. Before you buy an Alexa, just think, ¨What if someone hacked into my Alexa?¨

Great paragraph AJ. But a better solution would be to pay for firewall VPN. This is a more expensive method, but it is well worth it because you can protect every device in your house, and not just you Alexa.
DeleteThis is a sort of add on to your solution. I do agree with your idea of throwing away "Alexa", but I also agree that you could use technology for the best, so rather than throwing away any technology that have a high risk of getting hacked, I suggest you to find different technologies that can replace the one you currently have to put you in a better and safer place.
DeleteThere is so much new technology invented today.92% of the population own some kind of a smartphone. But many don't consider the dangers. Smartphone users often have symptoms like, dizziness, migraines, less or poor sleep, behavior problems, and etc. There are more long-term risks by using cell phones in children. There is also an increased risk of acoustic neuroma and glioma for cell phone users older than 10. Heaviest cell phone users tend to develop these things. The health impact of long-term and frequent use of cell phones today could get substantially worse. A strong suggestion would be to manage how much time you are spending on your cell phone. See how much you are spending on it, make a schedule, and use it less.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.center4research.org/can-cell-phones-harm-health/
Kids are losing sleep over spending too much time on technology. Parents should be monitoring what their kids are doing on social media and taking away cell phones or any other technology at a certain time every night.
DeleteAmazing work Emma! Another solution to this problem can include taking breaks from looking at screen devices, so you are not continuously straining your eyes.

ReplyDeleteThe one thing most americans have in their house is a television. On average, american adults are watching five hours and four minutes a day. They spend this time either watching a movie, the news, sports, or even a T.V show. They do this without even thinking of the dangers that come from their actions. Watching too much television can affect your brain in multiple ways. You could develop aggressive behavior or it could change your brain in a negative way. Watching too much television can also cause you to have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's or Dementia and it can also cause you to have brain damage. If you don't want any of this to happen to you than the resolution is simple. You can just cut down on the amount of hours you spend watching television.

Great job Isabella! With cutting down watching television time, you can also take a 10 minute break from watching tv every 20 minutes; as you should do with computer screens.
DeleteWow, great article. Another thing you could do is just stop watching television. Better yet, you could just throw your television in the garbage and burn it. This would reduce your television watching to 0%.
DeleteOne piece of technology that we use without really considering the dangers is nuclear energy. It is considered clean and good for the future. Although there is a risk of human death because of this energy source, we still use it because it is better for the environment. For example, Chernobyl was a community that used nuclear energy but there was a meltdown and it hasn't been inhabitable since. If we could find a way lower the risk of a meltdown and contain one if it happened to only a very small area it would be safer but probably not safe enough. There is also a lot of waste that comes from nuclear power plants. It is put into the ground to stay there for the rest of eternity. I think it is a good power source for now but once we find a clean, safer and renewable energy source we should switch straight to it.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.greenpeace.org/usa/global-warming/issues/nuclear/
Another solution that can be used is to carefully check nuclear power plants to make sure they are safe. Also you can come up with techniques that reduce waste.
DeleteQuinn I like your paragraph.
DeleteA possible solution is to narrow down on the uses of nuclear energy, or just get rid of it in all. To my knowledge there aren't many uses of nuclear energy in this world anyways.
DeleteIn life today there are many types of technology that are extremely helpful. But, do we ever consider the dangers in any of them? One type of technology that we don't consider the dangers of are iPhone's. These are dangerous to not only ourselves, but to the society. When people use their iPhone's they often forget to bring their heads up when in public. This causes varieties of accidents each and every day. These accidents usually occur when people are looking down at their phones and unaware of their surroundings while driving. In fact while people are doing this, 1.6 crashes occur each year from this unnecessary mistake that gets repeated over and over again. And from these crashes, there are about 390,000 serious injuries that happen from this recurring problem. We could prevent this all from happening by just being careful when it comes to being on our phones while driving and in public. If we do this it would cause many pointless accidents to stop occurring and many valuable lives to stop ending.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.edgarsnyder.com/car-accident/cause-of-accident/cell-phone/cell-phone-statistics.html
first let me say that your paragraph was great, it was very well put together and easy to understand. Another solution we could use to prevent this is to reduce our screen time, if we do that we wont feel compelled to use our phones in public.
DeleteThis paragraph was written great and I believe you, you are definitely right; we need to moniter our usage of our phones, but not only iPhones... ALL phones. Phones cause almost the same amount of accidents as drunken driving, and thats saying something; you've helped me realize that I need to watch my phone usage or it may be the cause of a serious problem, like glioma and acoustic neuroma (which are tumors).
DeleteOne thing we all use that is sometimes dangerous is soical media. soical media is dangerous because you can get cyberbullyed wich is a bully on teh internet. You can also meet people that look how you think on soical media but when you meet them they could be insaely crazy and kid nap you.You never know what you will find. If you use soical media to much you will get depression, poor sleep and axiety. Also you self esteem could also go down. DeleteGood job! You could also add that parents can set limits on how much people use certain apps.
DeleteSocial media companies should do a better job monitoring their platforms.
DeleteToday's society is very different from, let's say 70 years ago. Looking back, nobody had advanced technology. Everything was easier, people were closer, and we had more freedom. Kids could roam around outside for hours and stay active. But today's society? Kids would rather stay indoors on cell phones. The worst part thing about it, is that unknowingly they are inviting cancer into their own homes. Cell phones emit radiation from the antennas, the part we hear sound from, into the parts of our body closest to it. There are several ways we can still use our phones, so don't worry. Instead of spending hours upon hours on our phones, take a break! Yes, it is that simple. Take a break and just do something else. Maybe it's homework, riding a bike, eating a snack, or using the t.v.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/radiation/cell-phones-fact-sheet
Great job! Another solution is to put a limit on the amount of time your phone can be used, and make sure that the limit is never broken, rather than just take breaks from being on it but still be using it for hours every day.
DeleteI absolutely agree that we can limit our use of our phones by doing other things. But I think that if we have nothing to do, we should use that time to do things that can help our well being, such as exercising or hanging out with friends.
DeleteA big thing people use all the time, without considering the dangers, are smart TV´s. Over 40 billion US households have a smart TV. A big reason people get Smart TV´s is for the internet feature. Being able to hook up to the internet has many benefits. It allows you to download apps, use search engines, and stream online. For example: Netflix and Amazon Prime. You can also hook up bluetooth devices like the the Alexa Fire Cube.
ReplyDeleteWith all the good things that comes with smart tv´s, sometimes, people tend to overlook the risks that come with having one. The microphone connected to the audio on your smart t.v. is always accessible, even when it is powered off. This means people can hack your audio and listen to you speak. Since the microphone is on all the time - even when you turn off your t.v. - the person hacking you can hear you when your t.v. is off. Another thing someone could hack on you t.v. is the camera on it. When the camera is hacked people can see you all the time; just like how they can hear you. To prevent this from happening to your smart T.V. you can turn the voice recording off in the privacy setting. You can also go to the settings and disagree with the terms and policies. However, many people will probably agree and take the risk if they want to use the features of their smart t.v. If you do not accept the terms and agreement sections, you will not be allowed to use the service. Therefore, the danger is that some people are not aware, while others have to choose over the use of service and protecting their privacy. As a result, privacy is being violated and rights are traded.

Another way to be careful is to be more safe about what you plug into the smart TV. This was very helpful, thanks!
DeleteTechnology is a scary thing to think about. Many people think that technology is all good things, but there are many negative things about it. Now days, the average human uses technology for about 9 hours in one day. 9 hours is way to many, and people need to start having more social interactions. Also, it doesn’t surprise me that America has the most obese people in the world because not many people devote any time to going outside or exercising. They say kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Only 51.6% of kids in America get the one recommended hour each day, mainly because of the usage of technology. Technology is a good thing, but only when used an appropriate amount. I would say that the easiest solution to stop using technology so much, would be to set a limit on how much social media time you have every day. Maybe you can even have your parents set a limit so then you feel more apt to follow the limit.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2015/11/03/teens-spend-nearly-nine-hours-every-day-consuming-media/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4373d6601c93
We could also take breaks between screen time. So that way we can rest and get physical exercise.
DeleteAnother solution is to monitor what your children are doing on their phones and devices so you do not have to limit their screen time, because they may resent you for that.
DeleteDevices:
ReplyDeleteDevices are one of the most useful if not the most useful invention today. Everybody has them. If you don't have a phone you must have a computer, game console, etc. But there is a bad side to technology that everybody knows;but they ignore. So, I'm going to go into more details.
The trust of technology is insane. People trust the GPS for an example like they are gonna get to their destination for sure. As, long as they have a GPS. Another example is people putting there online info into the internet. There are multiple websites on google where you could search someones name ,and there government info is on that website. Anyone can see your information and view it! I'm not saying to stop using technology, but the internet could turn into your worst enemy someday. So, beware of this ,and be more careful of what you post, type, search, and how you communicate online.

Yes, I see where you come from saying the internet is not safe as others think, and it's correct. A possible solution on some websites are privacy settings where you can select who can see what you post, but on other sites be careful.
