As we have explored and discussed in class, human behavior has negatively impacted our planet.   Is it too late for the Earth to forgive us for the ways we have treated it?  In one paragraph:

  • share textual evidence from an online article of your careful choice that proves how human behavior has negatively impacted our planet,
  • discuss how the damages caused by the human behavior you share can be reversed, or why you think it's too late, and
  • at the end, paste the url of the website from which you  gathered evidence.

  1. One way humans are destroying the earth is through nuclear radiation. Nuclear radiation is caused by a strong nuclear force. This causes isotopes to be unstable and randomly eject nuclear radiation. I think, that it is not too late to make a difference. I believe this because this is a problem caused by man 100%. We should stop abusing our powers and rely less on nuclear radiation. This way we can conserve the environment for future generations. http://ed.ted.com/lessons/is-radiation-dangerous-matt-anticole

    1. Overall, good job on your post. I believe it could’ve used a little more information, like how humans are using and abusing nuclear radiation, but the info you already have is pretty good. I agree with you that radiation problem is pretty much entirely caused by humankind, and needs to be stopped. We need to be a lot less dependent on nuclear weapons or other things that can cause nuclear radiation. I don’t believe its too late to end it, but if it doesn’t get stopped soon, we might be done for. Great job on your paragraph Gummy Boy, you did good.

    2. Patrick, nuclear radiation is a big problem today, it affects the entire planet. I agree with your solution, but many jobs have been created with nuclear power plants. So getting everyone on board to stop abusing our powers as humans, would be very difficult and a very long process.

  2. In many different ways humans have negatively impacted the planet. One major way is landfills. In early American times most rural communities burned their garbage. However the things they didn't burn they left in dumps. Dumps were small at first but as we developed new things that couldn't burn as well more and more garbage was put in dumps. Landfills are the result of out of hand dumps. Even though the number of landfills is declining the ones that are still here are growing dramatically. The only reason landfills are declining steadily is because it's expensive to keep them going. By piling up all this trash we are changing the layout of the environment. Animals are losing their homes because our garbage is taking nature's place. Even though landfills have safeguards like clay walls and plastic lining trash still gets out. If we concentrate on reducing the amount of non-recyclable items we use we could fix this problem. For example when you go to the grocery store ask for paper bags or bring your own reusable bags. It will take a long time to see results of us changing our destructive routine, but in the end it's worth protecting our environment.

    1. Carleigh, I agree with your problem because people just throw everything away and they need to recycle. One solution is to recycle. If we don't recycle then are dumps are going to overfill.

    2. O M G! Carkeys! I totally agree with you! Landfills are pretty grody, and need to find some chill, but so do we. Recycling is one way to start the process of repairing our planet. This is one of the many problems I think we can slowly solve. Paper bags is a great example. If stores only had paper bags this problem wouldn't be as big. You have a great point. Great job dude.

    3. I agree that the problem can be stopped if we reduce our use and production of plastic and other things that are not safe to be burned, but what about reversing the problem? Even if we reduce or stop the use of landfills those mountains of trash are still there, and you said the trash still gets out of the dirt and clay they put on it. Nice Job Carleigh.

  3. “Dropping one little piece of trash on the ground won’t make a difference.” But it will. No matter when or where, littering makes a huge negative impact on Earth. Littering is illegal. It affects the planet economically and environmentally. 1.9 billion tons of trash end up in the ocean every year, which is more than the 250 million tons of trash generated every year. People who are more likely to litter are people in between the ages of 18-34 years old. Can we get rid of all of this trash and bring back all the animals that have been suffocated in plastic bags, soda rings, bottles and more? By now, there is way too much trash for us to handle and it doesn’t stop coming. But we can put a stop to it. Don’t litter. Find a trash can. Recycle plastic. Help save this environment from completely falling apart.

I actually disagree with you. I don't think that littering can be stopped. By now we've overfilled landfills and people are just too careless to think about what they're doing when they're littering.

    2. I don't agree. Some people can't be bothered to get up and put something to be recycled. By the time recycling had become a worldwide movement,it was the 80's. Tons upon tons of trash and recyclables had made it inside the earth and it's oceans. We have already destroyed the planet, it just takes a while to see it happen.

  4. Humans have been destroying the planet for awhile now. Scientists have stated that we have officially left the Holocene era for the Anthropocene era (A geological age of mankind's making). There are many ways people have been destroying the Earth for years now, but here are a few. Carbon Dioxide emission is when particles of coal are let out into the air. The main reason for this is because we need coal for money (We have let out around 400 billion tons of carbon into the air). Another reason is what we are doing to our oceans. The carbon let out usually ends up in the ocean meaning that the ocean's acidity level rises, and since some fish can’t live in high acidity levels it could throw off our whole ecosystem. We have also forcefully moved water flows. In the early 1960’s the Soviet Union diverted water flow to central Asia to help further grow the crops, but what came from it was the increase of salt concentrations which made it uninhabitable for some fish species once again throwing off our ecosystem. There is always a way to reverse something, and we should slow down on the amount of carbon used for cars and other things. We could maybe make more things solar energized instead of carbon fueled, and with our oceans the same example would help, but we should also stop forcefully directing the water flow to cater our needs.

    2. Josh I agree with you we should change the way we power the Earth and power it with natural resources such as solar, wind etc. If we do stop Carbon Dioxide emissions we wouldn't have to worry about pollution, global warming and other environmental problems that may harm the Earth.

  5. Pollution is bad whether it is air pollution or water pollution it is all bad. Since the 19th century there have been new sources of pollution. For example burning coal. The chemicals that are released pollute the environment and can cause disease. Pollution has been going on for a long time back when King Edward 1 was alive he threatened londoners with harsh penalties if they didn’t stop burning sea coal. Coal burning during the industrial revolution had serious health impacts on the residents of the growing urban centers. In 1952 pollutants from factories and home fire places mixed with air condensation killed at least 4,000 people. But in 1948, severe industrial air pollution created a deadly smog that asphyxiated 20 people in Donora Pennsylvania and made 7,000 more sick. Acid rain was a result from coal power plants. OhhMannGoddDamm. The only way I think this can be stopped is if we stop burning coal and stop drivings as many cars but that's not gonna happen nore is it realistic.

    2. I agree that this problem cannot be "solved" as many places around the world do not have the means to properly dispose of waste and other products and some don't have alternative materials to fall back on when it comes public work . How ever i do believe that by changing the way we use some materials we can help the earth. A great example are the newer hybrid cars.

  6. The Earth can not forgive us for what we have done. We have put too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Thanks to us putting all this carbon dioxide in the air the Earth is heating up. Now you may say that global warming is natural, and it is, but humans in the past around 200 to 300 years have helped global warming speed up. Because of global warming In Australia heat waves were responsible for 2,887 deaths since 1890. That is more than bushfires, cyclones, earthquakes, floods, and severe storms combined (still in Australia). Like what I said earlier the Earth can not forgive us for putting all this carbon into the atmosphere, it's all up to us. People need to reduce their carbon footprints. So that means people need to use their cars as least as possible ( obviously if you are going somewhere where you need to use your car then you can use it), use less electricity ( so when you leave a room then turn off the light, or don’t leave the tv on if you are not watching it, stuff like that), there are other things but that was just a few. If we can bring the carbon levels in the atmosphere down, a lot the Earth can start repairing the ozone layer (if you don’t know what the ozone layer is it protects us from the sun's rays).

    1. I don't know if this problem can or can't be solved because with the growing population there is a higher demand for products like cars, phones, and other devices that create carbon footprints. But at the same time scientists are working to find a clean and renewable energy source. If we can get a renewable source of energy within the next few years that is used on a global scale we will be able to very much reduce our carbon footprint. If we can't and the amount of carbon keeps increasing it might someday lead to global extinction.

    2. Great paragraph Henry! I agree this problem can be helped, but I don't think it can be solved. The more people the more carbon dioxide in the air. A solution is to drive a hybrid car, or turn the lights off like you said.

  7. How many plastic bottles do you dispose of everyday? Three, Ten or none? Even if you don’t use plastic in your life, there are consequences you will have to pay because of how others mistreat the earth. Every year 300 million tons of plastic is produced and we buy 28 million to use. A couple of bottles can be found floating on water. Did you know a plastic bottle can float for thousands of years? So what, you may say. A bottle is floating around, let it be. No, do you know how many aquatic creatures suffer because of your ignorance? Plastic is created with BPA and other deadly chemicals. When those creatures take in plastic, they suffer and die. 8 out of 10 bottles end up in landfills. Now it can’t even be recycled. Due to the harmful chemicals, not only are landfills being infected but also the land around it. Other pieces of plastic lying around in public can cause sicknesses and illnesses. Just to name a few : Breast cancer, diabetes, heart issues, and hormonal changes. Yes BPA affects us too, not just the creatures at sea. If we paid attention to this 50 years ago, none of this would be happening. It’s too late now. By 2048, most commercial fish will be gone while we use more and more plastic. We have volunteers to help clean up beaches and public areas but we pile up more trash. Their outstanding work isn’t getting us anywhere because they end up cleaning more than what they’ve started with. Our world has already been infected with this curse for 63 years, but we continue to make it worse.

  8. Humans impact on the environment

Humans most definitely have a negative impact on the environment considering that we have made tons of technologically and vehicular advances. With the evolution of the steam engine turning into the diesel engine most of the air pollution in the world today is the result of human activities. One example is fossil fuel combustion from cars, boats, planes etc. Combustion engines make large amounts of pollutants that are pumped into the air. Another example some of the pollutants are carbon monoxide which can be deadly to humans if ingested. Another example is nitrous oxide often used in cars for racing but if ingested by humans can also be considered deadly. If you were to ask me can we reverse the damage I would say no because there are parts in the world that are ozone layer is already starting to rip ex:australia, certain parts of africa.

    3. It is possible that the problem is not solvable, but we can still slow down the process of air pollution by reducing our carbon footprint. This can be done in multiple ways. You talked a lot about cars; one of the main carbon producers. We can reduce the effect of cars by walking to places instead of driving, and we can also reduce the effect by stopping deforestation and planting more trees and plants to absorb the carbon from the atmosphere.

  9. Littering is one of the most common behavior that has negatively impacted our planet. Littering consists of disposing waste products improperly. To litter means to drop and leave objects, objects handmade by man (man-made). Littering consists of aluminum cans, cardboard boxes, or plastic bottles. All of the litter on the ground is either being left to rot or others are disposing of these objects. The first discovery of littering was in 1515, the person who left their garbage on the ground was fined for “depositing filth in a public street”. Litter can be in the same place in the environment for long periods of time before degrading and be transported large distances into the world’s ocean. Littering is affecting the quality of life. Illegally dumped garbage can seep into water sources, contaminate the soil, and pollute the air. For example when tires are burned they can smolder for long periods of time after being burned, the chemicals that get into the air causes respiratory illness. Litter carries large cost to the economy. When the U.S cleans the litter it costs a tremendous amount of money. Hundreds of dollars are spent by cleaning litter by ton, which is about 10 times more than the cost of trash disposal. $11 billion are spent per year because we keep littering not thinking about the outcome on the earth, or our earnings. The ways we can make a difference and make this world even cleaner we can use the public waste containers that are provided by local authorities instead of throwing it on the ground. Another way we can make a difference is by picking up, even if it’s not your garbage it has the biggest effect on the earth by picking up and helping out a little. The world would be a much happier place if you went outside and helped our environment by picking up litter from our streets and making this earth a much safe and healthier home for everybody.

  10. There are many ways people are destroying our planet and landfills are one of those ways. Landfills are just piles on top of piles of garbage. They cause problems that harm the environment such as contaminating soil, water, and the air we breath. We can reverse this by making clean, sanitary landfills and use the greenhouse gases from it to make power/electricity. This will create a better living environment for all.

I also agree the the solution you stated because it makes sense to first put less into the landfills, but also put the landfills to use before we can get rid of them.

      Delete
  11. One way that humans are destroying the planet is by producing so much plastic. A study has shown that 300 million tons of plastic is produced every year. 20-40 percent of that ends up in landfills and 10-20 million more makes its way to the ocean. Plastic is made up of chemical compounds that can exist in the environment for 1000's of years without decomposing. Another study showed that 2.5 trillion plastic particles remain in the ocean, that equals to about 268,940 tons of plastic. This much plastic in the ocean with 100 of 1000 of creatures can cause a lot of damage. I think that this can be reversed by taking our plastic garbage and putting it in the recycling bin. This will allow tons of plastic to be re-used so that we don't have to keep making more that just gets thrown away and released into the environment. Decreasing the production of plastic overall will also help to solve the damage already done to the environment.

    2. I agree that the problem of plastic pollution can be reversed but it would take a lot of effort from mostly everyone on earth. 12. Cars emit exhaust which is breaking down the ozone layer. The ozone layer is a layer in the atmosphere that protects us from harmful radiation from the sun. Most cars have a combustion engine this burns fuel and produces pollution. There is another engine the diesel engine this can cause skin and eye irritation. Cars and trucks let out hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide which are harmful to humans. Car exhaust contributes to 1/5 of global warming. there are some new cars that reduce the impact on the earth like electric and hybrid cars. I think that if everyone converts over to electric cars global warming might slow down.

    4. Danielle I think that this problem may or may not be a serious as you present it as because the main problem you discuss is global warming due to pollution which is not a proven fact and may or may not be real. It is also very unrealistic for all people or even most people to drive electric cars as almost have a range of less than 200 miles and many have a range of less than 100 miles. On top of this almost all of them are 2 wheel drive, very small, have very bad towing capacity, and electric cars are not as safe. Switching to electric cars would also be very very bad for the economy as people would not be buying gas which would mean the federal and state government would not be collecting tax on the gas which pays for highways, school founding, federal spending, and helps found the department of motor vehicles. The USA is also the second largest oil producing country and oil makes up a big part of our economy, if we switched to electric our economy would take a massive hit. On top of this 80% of electricity is produced with fossil fuels so you would still be using fossil fuels to power your car if you charged it of public electricity in most areas. I think a more economic approach to non fossil fuel cars would be hydrogen powered cars. This would be more realistic as it would be as powerful with as long of a range as a gas car and could be refueled like a gas car. It would be economical as a federal and state taxes could be imposed on hydrogen, and the USA could become completely self sufficient on fuel. Hydrogen cars however have their own drawbacks and problems to overcomb.

Everyone is getting addicted to playing in virtual reality outside instead of actually going out and getting some vitamin D. Now there is addictions of technology; internet, sexual content and social media. Spend to long using technology and there is negative consequences. Some examples are dopamine in the brain stops sending out, you may develop computer vision syndrome and you aren’t getting enough physical activity so your risk raises for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Air pollution is a mixture of car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen, and mold spores that all find ways into the air. Even poisonous substance like Chlorine gas and ammonia can get into the atmosphere. Even plants are starting to die due to air pollution reducing crop yields and quality. According to the Massachusetts department of environmental protection Sulfuric acid is finding it’s way into our air and causing rain to be dangerous and harmful to our oceans and even speeding up decay of statues and buildings causing structural hazards. It may be too late to remove the pollution in the air but we can release less pollution in the air and then any remaining pollution will dissipate. There are many ways to slow the release of air pollution like turning off lights when not using them, you could plant trees and other plants that absorb carbon dioxide, and try wearing easier to clean clothes so you don’t to wash them as often.

So for example if a machine breaks or a computer crashes, humans become almost disabled until the problem is solved. There is also less value in human workers. It can lead to many things because, sitting down inside the house the whole day watching videos is very unhealthy. Then it brings up Obesity and Diabetes. At least run around and play for a couple of minutes then you could go back and and watch videos and movies for a reasonable amount of time. Watching a screen for hours can damage your eyesight and they way you function normally. Especially if you use your device for hours before you sleep. Then you wake up with problems with your body. We need to inform parents and the young adults that we need to use an appropriate amount of technology because the more you use it the more you it damages you.

I agree that people are on their devices too much. While there are apps that can limit people (especially kid's) time on such devices, parents don't seem to enforce this rule and download these apps on their devices.

    2. I completely agree with you. The overuse of technology is a big issue and you represented it perfectly. I think this problem can be solved if there was limit on how much we could use our devices for entertainment purposes each day. I think this solution could really helped kids and adults get off electronics and get outside!

  17. As the human race has evolved over the years, it has manufactured technologies that make life more comfortable and easy, but at the expense of the environment. We hear all the time how carbon dioxide is damaging the planet, and is a large contributor to global warming, but no one ever talks about black carbon-small particles that are produced by burning fossil fuels. Black carbon traps heat on the earth's surface causing global warming. It is responsible for a 6% increase in global warming emissions. Black carbon is 1.1 watts per square meter of earth's surface this is second to carbon dioxide of 1.56 per square meter of earth’s surface. The scariest thing is that black carbon can even affect expecting women, and causes millions of premature deaths every year. The deaths are mainly caused by the inhalation of the gas. All these premature deaths and global warming effects can be reversed. For example, by retrofitting diesel vehicles with filters that will lower the amount of black carbon emissions expelled lowering the percentage of global warming significantly. Premature deaths can also be prevented by having cleaner, more hygienic, and safer cooking appliances. In conclusion, the technologies are available in order to counteract the effects of black carbon, for if appropriate action is used this can and will improve our public health and the well-being of our environment.

    1. I don't agree. We have made the record for the hottest year 14 times of the top 15 in the 2000's. So much has carbon has been put in the atmosphere that it melts ice which is holding methane, another greenhouse gas, which makes it hotter and melts more ice. It has been beyond to late for a while because the main exports of developing countries are coal, oil, wood, and natural gases. It will warm up until most ice on the planet is gone making the world a humid sauna.

    2. I agree with your solution. If these appliances reduce or remove the amount of black carbon being put out into the air then over time the problem would become unrecognizable, and the amount of premature deaths would lessen. Good Job Muhib.

  18. Animal testing

Humans have hurt the world in many ways some that are probably not reversible. But one way I feel is horrid is animal testing millions of mice rats cats dogs and primates are held in cages and are experimented on. Every day this may not seem like a big problem to many people but have you ever wonder where that hair gel you use came from it came from a lab and before it was tested to be safe to put in your hair it was made in a lab and tested on a bunch of animals. And it probably had many defects like a bad rash hair color changing or even worse disease. We don't realize it but innocent animals are taken and being experimented on they are forced to have needles punctured in their skin. They are forced to take any pull shoved in their mouth, and they are forced to be in a cage defenseless and not knowing about what terrible act will be done.To them, 100 million rats are killed every day due to toxicology test some have holes drilled in their head due to brain test.Animals like rats and mice and even primates are being killed as we learned. In a world, without fish animals, depend on each other animals we take these animals from the wild and some are even raised in a lab.We are messing with nature and in the long run, the outcome won't be good.Taking animals from their population as we read World Without Fish we learn animals depend on diversity. Without this they will die.Out so keeping animals for our selfish needs is something we don't need to do.We need to fix our problems if we want to spend life on earth peacefully.

    1. Great job Knight. Could use a little more effort on punctuation, but you have some really good facts in there. And I completely agree on your case about animals being tested on for certain products or chemicals. Those chemicals can harm the animals in more ways than one, and it really needs to be stopped or we might not have them anymore. And the other types of things they test on them, such as poking and prodding them with needles, is really grotesque and just wrong in general. I also agree that without the diversity of fish, the fish and their predators might not survive. We really need to start working on getting rid of animal testing so the animals that are tested on can finally be at peace where they won’t be injected every day, and we also need to fish less so we can have the diversity in the ocean that the fish need. Once again, great job.

    2. I agree that forcing animals to be our test subjects is wrong and that there are solutions to it. If the end product is for humans then shouldn't we be the creatures that are being experimented with? If humans were to be tested instead of animals we would have more animals in the wild which means more biodiversity that might benefit dwindling species in the animal kingdom.

  21. One problem that humans have caused is the cutting down of too many forests. The article says, "Logging operations, which provide the world’s wood and paper products, also cut countless trees each year. Loggers, some of them acting illegally..." This is a problem because it is ruining the lives of animals and hurting nature. This is also a problem because 80% of plants and animals live in the forest/jungles/rainforests. According to the article, "The most dramatic impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes." Trees are very important in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming. It is never too late to fix this problem but it will take a long time. We can fix this by recycling more and finding other ways to make things that require trees/wood. In the article, it says, "The cutting that does occur should be balanced by planting young trees to replace older trees felled." Humans need to work together to solve this problem.

    1. Brian, I think this problem is very severe all around the world today. I also believe that this problem is close to being able to not be solved. The human race can certainly try to reverse the problem , but it would take efforts from almost everyone on the planet to pitch in ( which is most likely not to happen).

    2. Brian, I think deforestation is a huge problem in our world and can slowly be solved. Recycling is one way we can start this process. I think this can indeed help, but this alone will take a very long time to completely solve this problem. The population sort-of already blew their chance with this, but we still can help.

    3. Brian, I agree with your problem because people are cutting down way too many trees than they need to. We need people that can find a way to make paper without using trees. I liked your solution saying that we should plant new trees after we cut down trees so we don’t run out of trees.
