As we have explored and discussed in class, human behavior has negatively impacted our planet.   Is it too late for the Earth to forgive us for the ways we have treated it?  In one paragraph:

  • share textual evidence from an online article of your careful choice that proves how human behavior has negatively impacted our planet,
  • discuss how the damages caused by the human behavior you share can be reversed, or why you think it's too late, and
  • at the end, paste the url of the website from which you  gathered evidence.

  1. We humans have negatively impacted the world. Our world. The same one so many of us complain about on a daily basis. As many of us now, oils spills are a form of pollution. It was once believed that the Exxon Valdez in Alaska (1989) was the worst spill in history. But in actuality, it was the undersea spill at the bp rig in the Gulf of Mexico (2010). These are just two examples of how oil has negatively impacted us. And we cause it! In 2016 alone, one large tanker, and four medium-size spills occurred. It’s too late to save our planet in terms of pollution and oil spills. We’ve already caused all this damage, who knows what else we can do to destroy our planet.

    1. Rachel oil spills are a REALLY big problem but i don't they can be fixed because we can not stop making oil cause the never ending rise in the automotive industry but a way we can help prevent them or lower the chances of them happening are buy and build better rigs and make sure that they are built to the NGO standards so that oil spill have a lower chance of happening.

    2. I think that this problem can be solved once humans realize that we don't have to be so dependent on oil and other fossil fuels. There are multiple sources of renewable energy like wind, geothermal and solar power. Even kinetic energy from water mills, dams and oceans just to name a couple sources. We can stop oil spills from happening in the future from using these methods for energy instead of drilling for oil and petroleum.

    3. I disagree with your point of view. I believe that if we clean up oil spills and try to “go green” then we would have less pollution. One solution is to use “green” power over oil power. This way we could still do what we have to with no limitations and at the same time we would be helping the environment.

    5. Good job Rachel. I agree the oil spills are a very big problem. I believe however that the problem of oil spills has solutions, like shifting away from the use of oil, or finding better cleanup methods. The problem with the second idea is that especially in the BP oil spill, they used inefficient methods to clean up the oil, so I think going green and shifting away from oil is our best solution. Something has to be done about this problem, or we can say goodbye to a healthy planet.

  2. We killed the world basically and all of its beautifulness. One problem i'm going to focus on is tree getting cut down or known as deforestation. The definition of deforestation is the destruction of forests so other people can build land there. If you think this is good than you are crazy. 3 to 6 billion trees are cut down every single year! People say there is a way to end deforestation but honestly I don"t think we can. Some resources of mine say that maybe growing a tree, going paperless, eat vegetarian meals as often as possible and etc.... could help but it just doesn't seem to in my opinion. What do you think could work? Could we end deforestation?

    1. I totally agree with you, we have cut down to many trees, I think is too late to fix this problem, there really is no way to save the forests. The only way that may work is for every tree that we cut down we plant two more, but that probably won't work.

      Delete
    2. I disagree. I strongly feel that deforestation can be solved it just takes the correct amount of determination and willingness, for anything is possible with these two traits. Some solutions that may help with deforestation that are already in effect by governments and private companies around the world is replanting which is making some significant and impressive progress. Replanting allows new trees to be grown in otherwise previously cutdown areas. Then in 2-4 years depending on the scale of regrowth fresh trees are ready to be cut. However, this one method can not reach its maximum potential alone. Another solution that many lumberjacks use especially in oregon state is called rotation. Rotation is when lumberjacks will divide an evergreen mountain into 4 sections whatever section they decide to cut down afterwards by US federal law must replant this allows a cycle of cut, reseed, regrow, and cut, this is also known as mutualism (when organisms are beneficial to one another). Next year when lumberjacks come back to cut a section the previously cut section will have been close to becoming mature again. Lumberjacks will then cut a different section allowing the previously growing section to become once again lush. This never ending cycle allows lumberjacks to continue to work and be non-harmful to the environment. In conclusion, deforestation is still at large, but with cooperation, determination and willingness this is one societal problem that can be solved.

  3. Human behavior has negatively impacted our planet in many ways, and one of those ways is through marine littering. When people toss trash into the ocean or other bodies of water, birds and marine animals are directly affected. Plastic bags can suffocate fish and other animals, the animals can get stuck in 6-pack soda can plastic, and they can get sick or even die from swallowing certain trash. Also, bird’s flesh can be cut by glass from bottles. Marine litter also ruins potentially good water that can be used for drinking or other purposes. I believe that the damages caused by marine litter can be reversed, if people would just put trash in a garbage can or recycling bin instead of in the ocean. These damages can also be reversed if people help by picking up litter when they see it.

    1. Although this problem can be solved I feel that it'll be a difficult task because the waste is in the ocean. Majority of the marine litter is probably sitting on the seafloor which is not easy to reach. Plastic turns into tiny, unnoticeable particles. It'll take more than a hundred years to clean the oceans. A solution that'll help even if it's too late, is to stop adding to the problem and raise awareness about the dangers.

      Delete
    2. Great job! I completely agree that marine littering is a huge problem. I do agree that the problem can be fixed with a lot of work. At the center of marine littering is human’s ignorance of the damages their inflicting on the ocean. The simplest solution is to just find a trash can when you have something to throw out. Then to help the litter that’s already there just pick it up even if it’s not yours. It’s never too late to pick up trash.

    3. I agree with you Gabriella. I think littering hurts the marine life. I agree that land fills help the earth. I also think the problem can be made better. One other solution is we could also make better technology to help the earth.

  4. We have been destroying the environment. We (hopefully) all know that we need to do something. Although it might be too late, radiation from nuclear power plants that exploded, and even blast sights from atomic bombs, cause massive damage to the ecosystem. Radiation can stay in the air, water, and ground for years, poisoning everything that comes into contact with it. Chernobyl Ukraine, a town that's nuclear reactor that powered the city exploded, is still, too this day, uninhabitable because when it blew up, it emitted more radiation than the atomic bomb that landed on HIroshima, and Nagasaki Japan, put together. Unless we can find a way to remove the radiation from the ground, air, and water, the only other way we can help the planet we live on is too stop all production of radioactive materials and give the Earth time to heal.

  5. We the humans have negatively impacted our planet. One way we have is Burning coal for electricity. When we burn coal it releases greenhouse emissions which are destroying our Ozone layer. The Ozone layer is the layer that protects us from being fried by the sun. When burning coal it also causes smog, soot, acid rain, and global warming. One country that is burning almost as much coal as the whole world combined is China. I think humans can not reverse what they have already done. Earth I believe is going to be demolished in the next century if we keep hurting it.

  6. Thirty-four thousand metric tons of trash are thrown into the ocean every day. If you weren’t shocked by that fact then you don’t know about marine litter. Every year about nine billion tons of litter is dumped into the ocean. Most humans think that if you litter something once in awhile that it’s ok. But reality is that all that trash over time adds up. Some aluminum cans can take up to 80 to 200 years to decompose while most plastics take up to 450 years to decompose. All this trash is killing animals, birds dive through plastic rings and strangle themselves, seals dive into nets and get tangled then they can’t reach the surface for air. The list goes on and on. Animals try to eat plastic because they can’t tell it from food or their food is in decline. Us humans could fix this grave problem , but everyone in the world would have to pitch in , and I mean everyone . It would take 55 years , but it would be worth it because this is an issue that affects everything. So do your part, you could help the enviroment , the enviroment us humans are destroying .

    1. I agree that trash in our oceans is a big problem because some of the chemicals in plastic and paints is killing animals. I think their is a simple solution to our problem. We can solve this problem by rewarding people for recycling and composting and their should be a punishment for throwing away recyclables. Another thing we could do is set up boats that have nets that can collect the garbage floating on the top of the water and dispose of it properly.

    2. I agree that this problem could be solved if we all chip in. If we all use trash cans instead of the ocean that would somewhat reduce the pollution. We could also recycle more to help solve this problem.

  7. You've probably heard from things like commercials or conversations between people that plastic is taking it's toll in starting to destroy our environment. Some of you might think "How is that possible, it's just bottles, it doesn't have that much impact." Well, the truth is, there are many ways that plastic is killing our earth. There has been a LOT of plastic made this decade, and by the end of it, the decade would have created more plastic in ten years than what it has made last century. So yeah, it's not just a few bottles. And plastic takes a lot of time to decompose. A plastic bottle can take hundreds of years to be broken down. There are some other ways that plastic can be harmful, and this time it does affect humans and other animals. There are certain chemicals in plastic that can be absorbed by the bodies of humans that can cause some health problems and change hormones. Some of those chemicals can also be absorbed into groundwater if buried in a landfill or other places. And, if eaten by animals in the water or by birds, that can possibly injure them on the inside and kill them. But I think we can help reverse this, or at least stop most of the damage. The first solution is by recycling instead of throwing bottles out, or worse, littering. By recycling, most of the plastic could be taken somewhere where it can be melted and created into new bottles or other plastic products. It would still take energy, but a lot less energy than just making new plastic. Another way is by just using less plastic in general. Instead of buying plastic bottles to drink from, unless you actually need to buy them, just fill up a reusable bottle with water and drink from that. That can lower the usage of plastic and help the environment out. We can help stop this, but only if these types of changes happen. Otherwise, we could be screwed over and destroy the environment on our planet.

  8. Pollution has always been a fairly large problem for society, and from the start it has just gotten worse and worse. The lack of respect humans have for the planet is astonishing. 70% of industrial waste is dumped untreated into waters. 70%! Humans take littering lightly, but so many people do it. It builds up over time. On average, $11.5 billion goes towards cleaning up litter each year, but we've let this habit get so bad that all this money spent on getting rid of litter hasn't helped nearly as much as it used to. The message to 'stop littering' is not take as seriously as it should. The more we wait until we try to fix this the worse it will get. People need to put in effort to break this habit and help make our world healthy again. Be cautious of what you're doing, and where you put your trash.

  9. Humans have been around for a very long time. For much of our time period on this planet we have caused little damage to the environment. All though lately pollution and overpopulation has hurt our environment badly for the past few centuries. Having an increase in population has given much more demands for our natural resources and livestock. With over population comes more pollution from cars, factories, and garbage. Cars cause 75% percent of carbon monoxide pollution in the United States. When we have overpopulation plus pollution, plus less resources, equals a dead Earth. And it will be our fault. It’s too late to reverse what we have done. The Earth has already been impacted by our pollution. Who knows what's going to happen next?

  10. Society has done many things to change the future of nature negatively. From pollution to just not throwing something out many things the human race is doing today could completely destroy the future. One thing is light pollution; light pollution is any exposed light during the night time. When you go into a large city everything is illuminated during the night. All of the exposed light effects the ecosystem from the large overhead lights at gas stations to porch lights outside of people's houses, and all the glare from this artificial light makes it so you can’t see stars. Fixing this fairly easy but nobody is going to want to spend the money to fix it. Certain models of porch lights have the outside of the lamp covering the sides of the light making the light focused so it still emits light but doesn't effect as much of an area. If all lights were to switch to an ecosystem friendly model then light pollution would be greatly reduced. Now it might not seem like that big of a thing to not be able to see stars, but If stars were to disappear from sight then astronomy would be gone and we wouldn't be able to continue research on stars. After researching this I do think there are worse problems out there that could make life on earth unravel and fall apart but this is a problem to keep in mind.

I agree that it can be taken care of. If it is not a huge problem, it should be easier and quicker to fix than other problems. I think another solution to this problem would be that if people can't replace their lights, they could make sure that whenever they are not using a certain room or area of their house that all of the lights are off and try not to leave lights on for a long time. Awesome job on this paragraph!

  11. Throughout history, and to present day, we continue to have a negative effect on how we treat this planet. Chemical Warfare was very common in the 1900s, meaning it was used a lot. It not only had a devastating effect on humans, but our planet as well. After WWII, the US dropped between 30,000-40,000 tons of old chemical weapons into the Scandinavian Region. Another example is landmines. It is estimated that every 20 minutes there is an accident involving a landmine in just the US alone! These landmines can last a very long time. These weapons leave massive craters in the ground when detonated, destroying the earth. To stop these weapons being used, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines proposed a treaty to other countries to ban this explosive. As of today, over 150 countries have taken part! But even with the bans, some countries use these types of weapons everyday. That is why if we don’t stop these weapons, we could destroy our planet in the near future.

  12. We as humans are single handedly destroying the planet Earth's fragile systems. Many people notice that there have been massive droughts and massive floods. These both harm wildlife and us. The US coast, alone,is home to about 25 million people including massive cities like New York City and Los Angeles. These cities, low lying forests, and wetlands being on the coast are vulnerable against the ever rising coast line. The sea walls that we currently have won't be tall enough to stop what is coming. The American economy is also at stake noting that it gains 58% of the US’s GDP(Gross Domestic Product) on coast line activities. The East coast and the Hawaiian Islands in the past 50 years has seen 4.01-8% rise on the coast. While Alaska is losing coastline at -4 through -8%. Louisiana is also having a rise on the coast by 8%. That is twice the global rate. If this is the constant rate, the coastline would have receded by 1-3 feet at the end of this century. Wetlands are harmed by this rise because of their low lying land. The plants and animals who live at the mouths of rivers also will be harmed due to the salt water mixing with the fresh water. These waters will also see an 4-8° change which will kill off aquatic plants and animals. By the time we get our act together, the eastern seaboard will not be the same as you know it. Louisiana is still recovering from a flood in December, so we will not be able to recover from a massive flood.

A solution or how to prevent this is we explore the risk-taking that can and does lead to disaster. Most people don't make preventions for this until after the disaster has happened. Solutions to help man-made disaster though is, to not do the horrible things we do to our planet.

  13. Mining is one of the many things as humans we do that comes with great sacrifice. The practice of mining is breaking into a deeper layer of the earth to collect minerals, which already has a lot of red flags, but getting to that point is already tedious as you have to clear land to start. Meaning the have to cut down/destroy most of the ecosystem in an act of deforestation which messes with the living habits of many species. The land is not the only thing that effective because due the equipment used for mining many chemicals like Mercury,Cyanide get sucked into pipes that lead to many big bodies of water. This could also affect humans that live near the mining sites as their water could also get affected leading to possible sickness. Now there is some forms of mining with little consequences but their isn't a need for alll this risk.

    1. I think the problem of mining can be easily solved by not using effective equipment like the chemicals you mentioned, Mercury and Cyanide. We can also not interfere with living habitats of many species and not cut down or destroy to many trees. Some solutions we do to help whether it is to late or not is if we not mine a lot or not at all because we don't need to mine, we don't need minerals to live so mining isn't important. If we do mine, we shouldn't be using dangerous chemicals and destroy the ecosystem because that's just us being selfish and thinking that the ecosystem just belongs to us but it doesn't because other living species need it in order to survive.

    2. I agree that we could use better tactics to make sure we’re not impacting our water. However if we were to use natural holes that are already deep enough for us to find the minerals in it might be a more efficient way to help us since the holes are already there, and we're not destroying the earth more than we already have.

  14. I hope you’re not claustrophobic. I hope you're okay with not living past the age of 40. I hope you don't rely on food and water. Oh wait, you do? You want to live past 40? Well then you should help do something about overpopulation. Now, I'm not saying you should go around killing people and have your excuse be “I'm helping the planet!”, I'm saying you should make yourself aware of this issues associated with overpopulation. Ever heard of global warming? Humans only aggravate the forces behind it. Along with environmental pollution, habitat loss, intensive farming practices, consumption of natural resources (fresh water, arable land, fossil fuels, etc.). Okay, now back to the water thing. Did you know that out of all of the water on the planet, only 3% of it is freshwater? 2/3rds of it is undrinkable due to pollution and disease, and some of it is trapped in glaciers, leaving only 0.03% of freshwater actually drinkable. If we don't do something about this, by the year 2030 we’ll go into a Global Water Crisis! I brought up disease earlier so let me dig a little deeper into that for you. With too many people on the planet, disease will spread like crazy, not only shortening life expectancy, but also making it a high probability that one in five children won't live past the age of five. It's not just humans that won't live long either, plants and animals are going extinct too. If conditions don't improve, it's safe to say that we can expect more than one half of all animal and plant species will be gone in just a few decades. Your way of life will have to change too. Get ready for less jobs, more traffic laws than ever, limits on water consumption, and laws on what you can do on your own land. Get ready for less fresh fruits and veggies, and more insects, seaweed, and sweat. Yes, sweat. If the world runs out of water you will literally have to resort to drinking your own (or someone else's) sweat. But don't worry, there's still time to change our ways and save the planet. It's not like you have to go out of your way and invent some crazy machine either, it's just as simple as improving others sexual education so they're “safer”, washing your hands more to not spread illnesses, don't waste food and water, and inform others about the existential crisis we will face if we don't change our ways.

  15. Human behavior changes the environment in many negative ways. One of the way that humans damage the earth is through pollution. Pollution has been a problem that humans had created for a long amount of time. One way pollution affects the ocean is that humans use explosives, have oil production, use pesticides, and radiation which make up about 44% of all pollution in the ocean! There are even atmospheric pollutions that account for 33% of earth's pollution. People used to dump radioactive waste in the ocean until it was banned in 1993. Even though it was ban there are large quantities of radiation in the Ocean because of events in human history like the Fukushima nuclear meltdown in japan. One of the most dangerous of all the pollution chemicals is Persistent Organic Pollutants (pops) which enters any creature's body through their fat and causes cancer, hormonal and immune system problems even child development problems. Also four times more mercury has been released into the environment because of mining than the amount that would have been released through weathering and erosion. I think that If we stop to use as much oil production we could prevent fewer oil spills which would greatly help the earth stay clean. If we could cut back on other resources that we use it could also benefit the government.

I think that if enough people really understand the danger that pollution is to our world, they would understand how much it really needs to stop. Maybe if companies stopped producing material that is hard to break down, it might help. Also, if nuclear warfare and radioactive waste production came to a halt, we would be much better off.

If we could find a solution to stop air pollution or any type of pollution that would be amazing but due to how long pollution has been going on, I think it's way to late to stop it now.

    2. You could argue both ways about technology being good or bad and you used you're opinion about how it could be bad and had a lot of detail an you had supporting facts solutions people could use to help fix it is calm down with the technology.

    3. Addiction to electronics is a major problem, and we really depend on them for day to day activities. I do agree with you, but I think there are some ways to reduce amount of materials for phones being used. For example instead of buying a phone every year like some people you could wait until your phone is unusable to buy a new one. This reduces demand for phones, and therefore phone companies won't need to make as much phones. this causes less precious metals to be used.

  17. Human impact is rapidly changing the climate. Global warming has massively impacted us as a society. Global warming is mainly caused by too much carbon dioxide in the air. Co2 traps the heat making it warm the earth. Fossil fuels like cars, factories, etc. also create a buildup of Co2. Most of this carbon dioxide is caused by us. When we burn oil, coal, gas, forests carbon builds up and fills the planet. Some agricultural practices, and waste management worsen the problem. It's too late to stop the issue as a whole, but there is things we can do to help slow it down. If we reduce our carbon dioxide use we can help climate change tremendously. Ways we can do this is by is burning less gas, trees etc.We can use other things for energy; such as solar energy, battery powered energy, Hybrid cars etc. Making these simple changes will impact the plant positively.

    1. I think that the problem can not be solved because since global warming is already happening all we can do is slow it down not stop it. If everyone switched to electric cars and burned less gas we could have stopped it.

    2. I completely agree with you Julianna. It is too late to fix this problem. We can not take back the fact that we have already emitted Co2 and other fumes into the atmosphere,so much that it affects our ozone layer, but we can help by changing our habits. I have a solution in mind and I think that could be really helpful. In stead of always using cars and just using more gas, carpool. I think that if we use less automobiles to get around and instead we walk or go by bike to your destination, we will lower the rate of Co2 getting into the atmosphere. I also think that there is a need for cars because not everybody can walk and some locations are far away from them but even walking halfway and then find a way of transportation after would be less harmful to the atmosphere. Anything that helps is worth it, so we can save our planet from global warming.

  18. Global Warming is a huge problem in the world today. Of course global warming isn’t all caused by human factors. It is a combination of both natural and human factors that lead to global warming. Because of global warming many other problems seem to occur. Some of the problems that occur because of global warming is oceans are getting warmer. Oceans have absorbed 20 times more heat than the atmosphere resulting in warmer oceans. Because temperatures are getting warmer wildlife and plants are shifting where they live. Polar bears have nowhere to go. Humans have a big impact on global warming. This what humans do: When you drive, fly, and power things with air polluting sources many gases are released that cause our planet to heat up. When people cut down trees and forests this adds to the problem of global warming. We need trees so they can absorb the carbon dioxide in the air. If there are not a lot of trees around more gases are in the atmosphere, which means thats trapping more heat. Methane is a gas that contributes to global warming. Human sources of methane include; decomposing organic matter, landfills, animal waste, sewage, dams etc… Although global warming is already a huge problem I think that there still are ways we can help our planet. There are many ways that you can help prevent global warming. Some ways to help prevent global warming are you can reduce fossil fuel use, plant trees, reduce waste, conserve water etc… So we should help save the environment now, before it’s too late.

    1. I agree that this problem can be solved because like you said we are one of the causes of global warming and we need to start planting trees and making forests instead of destroying them. We alo need to start using more eco friendly things like electric cars and paper bags that will not hurt the environment.

  19. Human beings are damaging the earth as we know it through nuclear warfare. Hiroshima is an example of nuclear warfare when the US dropped the bomb on Japan they never knew what would happen to the environment afterwards. In 2006 studies predicted that up to 5 million tons of smoke from burning cities would quickly rise above cloud level into the stratosphere, and within 2 weeks would form a global stratospheric smoke layer which would remain in place for about 10 years. This is bad because the smoke would also help make the ozone layer disappear faster, the ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet radiation.

    1. I agree with you that humans are damaging the earth, through nukes?, if we have to launch one then yes (also nukes are bad for everyone). We just don't need to launch any nukes.

    2. I say that the problem can not be solved. I say this because even though America already bombed Hiroshima, countries are still going to fight wars using atomic bombs. Countries are still looking for control and will still use atomic bombs to gain what they want. One way to solve the problem could have been for that America to have ended the war a different way. If that happened countries could have stopped working on atomic bombs and then we would live in a society with less pain and suffering.

  20. Fresh Clean water is very important to humans, and a clean sea is important to the creatures of the sea including the fish we eat. But humans have slowly destroyed the quality of the water that all creatures need to survive. How you may ask? Well think about this statistic only 17% of the trash in new york city is being recycled. While the rest of the rubbish and waste ends up in landfills or even worse just littered around the city. So the people of new york obviously aren't living on top of a bunch of garbage so where does the litter go? it gets whisked up by the wind and is carried to the hudson river. The hudson then flows into atlantic ocean carrying that disgusting garbage with it. Think about what that garbage could do to our oceans! not only does the garbage have a high potential to harm the animals of the sea it also generally makes the ocean unclean. Which is not good for the earth or any creature on the earth. We can definitely negatively impact the water quality of the oceans and bodies of water on this earth. But the real question is how do we can positively impact the quality of the bodies of water on the place we call home? Well there's the basics like recycling. But there's also new technologies that have been created, and are being created to help us help our water quality and hopefully help us have a healthier cleaner planet.

    1. This problem is a bit hard to solve but there are multiple solutions, each with their own setbacks. If we got enough people to realize the danger of water pollution to not only the aquatic life but our own lives then there might be some real action to start water clean up. First off we could start producing less plastic packaging and replacing it with biodegradable materials, that way if it did end up the ocean it wouldn't form a huge garbage mass it would end up dissolving in the water leaving the marine life unharmed. As for the beaches and streams anybody could help by picking up the garbage and recycling what you can.

    2. I agree with you Cassie. I think trash and dirty water is also bad for humans and animals. If people could come together and Earth Day was everyday, then we could make the world a better place. It just depends on what type of technology we use to help the earth.

  21. Litter is a big problem today. People just don't care and don't think of the consequences of littering. “The US spends more than 11.5 million dollars cleaning up litter every year.” There is a island of trash that scientist believe to be “two times the size of texas” floating around in the Pacific Ocean. Sea life is dying because of this. Also, animals are dying because of disease. Litter carries disease and that disease is passed to animals that eat it. The biggest source of litter is cigarette butts. Cigarette butts contain harmful chemicals and they are just lying around. This is not good for the environment. This problem can be fixed. People just need to stop littering and throw trash away. If we all help clean up the earth and stop littering, this problem can be reversed.

    1. I agree that littering can be solved because there aren't big and complicated procedures we have to go through (if on land). If it is too late or not, there are solutions which can reduce the effects of littering. We can get groups of volunteers to pick up trash in the community and teach others the proper way to dispose of waste.

    2. Great job! Littering is definitely a problem we can solve. People just need to become more aware of how each piece of trash they don’t properly dispose of is a problem waiting to happen. Anyone can help reduce littering by just not doing it and throwing something away when you see it in a place it’s not supposed to be.
